OUR FOCUS: Build Christian Disciples for a Transformed Community Rob Springer-Kyle leads our Welcome and Engagement ministries at Saint Michael and he would love the opportunity to connect and answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact him at (903) 405-7447 or rspringer-kyle@saintmichael.org. The blue cover reflects the liturgical color used during the season of Advent; blue is associated with the Virgin Mary, and so brings to mind the Incarnation.
FROM THE RECTOR
TODAY AT SAINT MICHAEL
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today! We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on the opposite page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need. Today we begin the sacred season of Advent. Thank you to all those who made today’s Nativity Pageant possible, especially the parents and adults to helped prepare our beautiful children! In addition, there are many major outreach initiatives such as Heart of Giving and the Foster Toy Drive. Volunteers are in the hallways today to help you extend your impact to our neighbors. As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, just and true: to you be praise and glory for ever! Of old you spoke by the mouth of your prophets but in our days you speak through your Son whom you have appointed the heir of all things. Handel’s “Messiah” was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742, premiering in London nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the bestknown and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.
The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer A (standing) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus and Benedictus (standing, sung by all) “Holy, holy, holy, Lord” Robert Powell
Hymn S 129
Please kneel as you are able Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
5
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it;and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (sung by all) “Alleluia, Chrsist our Passover” Ambrosian Chant
Hymn S 152
Cantor People Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Communion Motet (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come
Paul Manz
Peace be to you and grace from Him who freed us from our sins, Who loved us all and shed His blood that we might saved be. Sing Holy, Holy to our Lord, The Lord, Almighty God, Who was and is and is to come; Sing Holy, Holy, Lord! Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein, rejoice on earth, ye saints below, for Christ is coming, is coming soon, for Christ is coming soon! E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, and night shall be no more; They need no light nor lamp nor sun, for Christ will be their all! - from Revelation 22 The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all) Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Written in 1953 when the composer and his wife’s three-year-old son were critically ill and not expected to live, this anthem is widely considered one of the finest sacred choral anthems by a 20th-century American composer. Making compositional techniques from the Renaissance and Baroque eras his own, devoted Lutheran church musician Paul Manz creates a piece as masterful as it is heartfelt. With many Advent season parallels, the text, by Paul Manz’s wife Ruth, was written as an expression of resignation to God and hope for the future during their son’s illness.
The Blessing (kneeling) The Dismissal (standing) Minister People
Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Parents of children who participated in the Pageant may pick up their children in the same room where they dropped them off earlier this morning.

César Franck’s organ reputation rests firmly on just a dozen pieces, which include the three great Chorals and the “Pièce héroïque,” all dating from 1868 until the year of Franck’s death in 1890. Today’s poslude comes from a group of 44 pieces, most of which were published posthumously under the editorship of Franck’s son, Georges, in 1905. These were designed as liturgical offertories, for parish organists ‘in the provinces’, playable on harmonium or larger pipe organs. Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

Annual Giving Campaign Giving to our annual stewardship campaign, Building the Kingdom, is an essential practice that supports Saint Michael’s shared mission and ministry, including our growing staff, campus, and programs. While essential to our operations, giving annually is an incredibly important spiritual discipline. An annual gift represents our stewardship of the time, talents, and treasures that God gives freely to each one of us. Giving back to God’s work through Saint Michael is a sign of gratitude and a key part of deepening our discipleship identity. It’s our turn to invest in our future. As you evaluate your annual stewardship gift, we also ask you to please join us in Building our Future.

The 2023 beneficiaries are: • Amistad Bolivia Youth Houses: Therapeutic houses for the youth of Amistad experiencing the effects of deep trauma and other mental health issues. • Tela Honduras Mission: The mission team provides flouride and Bible Study resources to the children in the barrios of Tela and the students of Espiritu Santos Episcopal School.

This year we will be sharing Christmas joy with our friends at Stephen C. Foster Elementary through our first annual toy drive for the students grades PreK through 6th grade! We hope all Saint Michael parishioners will consider donating new toys (cost limit $35) toward our goal of collecting 500 toys. Families are especially encouraged to shop together so that our young members may bring a new toy to share with our neighbors. This drive is a joint effort of Mission and Outreach, Children and Family Ministries, and Saint Michael Episcopal School. Tela Honduras Mission
For fourteen years, every February a group of Saint Michael missionaries returns to Tela, Honduras, to work and worship in partnership with Espiritu Santo, an Episcopal Church and day school. In the local barrios as well as at church, we work with parishioners and senior class members to provide more than 350 children with fluoride treatments, along with toothbrushes and toothpaste, to fit over 200 adults with reading glasses and sunglasses, and to engage more than 450 students in Christian education, which includes storytelling, singing, and crafts.
Tela Honduras Mission Trip February 17 – 24, 2024
Saint Michael will send a team to Tela, Honduras February 17-24, 2024, as we continue our longtime work in this community. For more info, please contact George Baldwin gbinvest@swbell.net.
Amistad, Bolivia Youth Houses
Since 2000, Saint Michael has supported the orphaned children and adolescents of Villa Amistad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, helping to successfully bring them to independent living through life in transitional youth houses. During the pandemic, the adolescents were particularly affected by the isolation of quarantine. Our support will help them receive the educational, medical, spiritual, and emotional support they need to overcome their traumatic past.
Amistad Bolivia Youth Mission Trip July 29 – August 8, 2024 Registration open now.
The trip, led by the Rev. Robin Hinkle and the Saint Michael Youth Minister, Sam Moore, takes place from July 29 – August 8, 2024, at Villa Amistad in Bolivia. For more information, contact The Rev. Robin Hinkle at rhinkle@saintmichael.org.
