GOD’S STORY In the Church One of the great opportunities we have at Saint Michael this coming program year is everyone reading through the narrative of the Bible, “God’s Story,” together. Each Sunday morning at 10 a.m., members and guests of all ages will attend an age-appropriate class and hear God’s plan of salvation unfold. This is a wonderful way for each of us to deepen our faith, and for families to grow together in their faith and understanding of the Bible.

Mission & Outreach seeks to proclaim the faith by word and deed; engage all parishioners in the generous sharing of God’s gifts; seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors, far and near; and be heralds of justice and peace for everyone. Strategic Goal: To serve others in Christ’s name as we enhance the spiritual life of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church parishioners.
AUSTIN STREET SHELTER
HEART OF GIVING
Each month parishioners at Saint Michael prepare and serve food for 400 people experiencing homelessness staying at Austin Street Shelter. On the first Tuesday of each month, 12 to 15 parishioners cook and prepare a full-course homemade meatloaf dinner. On Wednesday, the food is delivered to the shelter and later that day, another 15 to 20 parishioners serve the dinner. In the fall of 2016, Saint Michael and All Angels began offering Evening Prayer in the Austin Street Chapel. Heart of Giving benefits four pre-chosen SMAA outreach ministries each year. When one makes a tax-deductible gift in honor of another, the money goes to those ministries, and the donator receives cards they can give the honoree! This is a easy and festive way to impact others and support ministries at the same time. Contact: Paige Wilbur Paige.E.Wilbur@wellsfargo.com
THE GATHERING The Gathering was founded to build and nurture a loving and compassionate faith community where the housed and unhoused, churched and unchurched gather together to seek healing, spiritual fulfillment, and Christian community. Services are held every Sunday at 1p.m. in Thanksgiving Square, downtown Dallas. Saint Michael parishioners cook and serve a hot meal 6 times per year to those in attendance. A member of our clergy celebrates the Eucharist on those Sundays that we serve, and all help provide for the physical and pastoral needs of The Gathering members. GENESIS WOMEN’S SHELTER & SUPPORT Parishioners cook meals for the 30-50 children staying at Genesis. Additionally, parishioners serve as mentors and assist with special projects for the women and children. Contact: Christi Morrow (see opposite)
MEALS ON WHEELS Saint Michael’s parishioners deliver nutritious, freshly prepared hot meals to 4,000 Dallas County residents who are homebound and unable to access resources such as food banks and grocery stores. SMAA volunteers drive 14 weekly routes during the year, delivering meals and social support to clients needing to continue living independently. Parishioners also donate and wrap toiletry items for the holiday gift project and participate in special holiday meal deliveries. Contact: Christi Morrow (see opposite)

To kick off the weekend, volunteers help with Senior Christmas Luncheon and are asked to donate desserts, help with decorations, set-up, serving lunch and clean-up. IBIA Weekend then continues with volunteers setting up a ‘Christmas store’ where residents can use their volunteer hours to “buy” gifts for their family. MISSIONS AMISTAD - BOLIVIA The Amistad Mission provides more than “housing” for the orphaned and abandoned children of Cochabamba, Bolivia. We provide a home and a bright future. Begun in 1989, La Villa is Amistad’s campus where more than 70 children and youth—all abandoned, abused or orphaned—receive the support they need to rebuild their confidence and find joy again. At La Villa, our children have the opportunity to grow-up in a loving, Christian home and also receive the educational, medical, spiritual and emotional support they need to overcome their often
traumatic past and become healthy children and young adults. Saint Michael has been a supporter of the Amistad Mission for decades. We invite you to become a part of our history! Contact: Kelly Reddell kellyreddell@att.net Mark Demler mdemler@comcast.net
HONDURAS In February, Saint Michael missionaries returned to Tela, Honduras for 7 days, partnering with Espiritu Santo, the Episcopal Church and Day School. 38 SAINT MICHAEL RESOURCE GUIDE | FALL 2018
With its themes of light and darkness, snow and cold, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope, C.S. Lewis’s enchanting novel for children, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, is in fact both a delightful and serious Advent story for adults. You don’t have to have read the book to attend this Quiet Day where, through discussion and personal reflection, we’ll talk about faith and imagination in our own lives and explore the promise of Incarnation as conceived in the novel and scripture. Turkish Delight will be served! Heidi Haverkamp is an Episcopal priest and the author of Advent in Narnia: Reflections for the Season, a devotional book for adults and youth that includes scripture readings, reflection questions, suggested activities, and a recipe for Mrs. Beaver’s Sticky Marmalade Roll. $10 per person RSVP to hfisher@saintmichael.org

Lasting a little less than 30 minutes and in our candlelit church, Compline centers around the Psalms, Scripture, and prayers taken from Scripture (including the Nunc Dimittis – the Song of Simeon). Unaccompanied music by the Compline Choir is primarily Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. The particular liturgical aesthetic of our Compline is aimed at concluding our weekend with reflection, calm, and peace.

GOOD SHEPHERD MINISTRY
The Men of Saint Michael is an informal organization whose aim is to bring men into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. It is the umbrella organization that coordinates Men’s activities at our church: fellowship, study, and groups that work together to deepen men’s relationship with their families, with other men of the church, and their personal relationship with God.
To build a sense of community within the larger geographical area of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church by responding to immediate needs with neighbor helping neighbor. What We Do The Regional Shepherds distribute information and oversee the Neighborhood Shepherds. There are at least one or two Neighborhood Shepherds in each of the 101 areas into which the entire church membership is geographically divided. It is important for each of us to know his or her neighbors and shepherds. The Neighborhood Shepherds are the liaisons between the neighbors and the church, and coordinate any help needed in the neighborhood. How Can I Help? When you receive a call or letter from your Shepherds introducing themselves, you can help by letting your Shepherds know that you would be willing to assist in your neighborhood. Contact the Church when in need, and give us permission to let your shepherds know what is going on so they can be of assistance as well. Don’t forget to let your shepherds know if there is anything they can do to help you during the year. 44 SAINT MICHAEL RESOURCE GUIDE | FALL 2018

The ushers are typically the first and last people that visitors see at our church services. They bring a friendly spirit and warmth to our services, and are responsible for handing out programs, assisting people in finding a seat, managing the offerings, and for the orderly movement of people to and from communion. The men and women of our Usher Corps are personable, friendly, sensitive to the needs of others, and are extraordinarily good-looking. For more information contact Gary Wall, gmwall1@prodigy.net
FINANCIAL GROUPS ALL ANGELS SOCIETY / LEGACY PLANNING The All Angels Society has been established by The Saint Michael and All Angels Foundation to commemorate gifts made to the parish through bequests and other estate planning. Anyone who has remembered this church in his or her will qualifies for membership. As God’s stewards, we build on the foundation left by those who came before us. We, in turn, have the opportunity, with a bequest to Saint Michael, to sustain and enhance our parish ministries and programs for the benefit of future generations. The Foundation uses parishioner gifts made through wills, trusts, insurance policies, retirement plans, and other planned giving to advance the mission of this church. Every bequest — a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your total assets, or the residual estate — is a statement of faith and thanksgiving.

THE SAINT MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS FOUNDATION The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is governed by a 15 member board of trustee elected by the parish, which oversees a professionally managed perpetual fund invested for capital growth and preservation. The Foundation supports the vision of SMAA, to be followers of Christ spreading God’s love in our community and in our world. With a gift to the Foundation, people who love Saint Michael and All Angels can leave an enduring legacy that perpetuates the church’s mission and ministries long after their lifetime. The principal from gifts to the Foundation is invested and never spent when directed to an endowment fund. As the endowments grow, distributions from the earnings are made to strengthen and initiate new church ministries, enhance our places of worship and fellowship, and reach into the community to help our neighbors. Grants in recent years have supported community outreach programs including the revitalization of the Jubilee Park community, Saint Michael’s Farmers Market, and the Saint Michael Presents concert series, expansion and growth of the Saint Michael Episcopal School, and creation of the Nave and Courtyard Columbarium on the church’s southwest campus, to mention a few.
