Douglas Travis Called as Interim Rector. The Vestry has called the Very Rev. Douglas Travis as Interim Rector, beginning his ministry with us on September 28. For six years, he served as President and Dean of the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, and currently is Canon Theologian for the Diocese of the Rio Grande. It is important that everyone take the Parish Survey which will help guide the Rector Search and Transition Committee in identifying Saint Michael’s next Rector. The survey, which runs through September 20, is available online at www.saintmichael.org/ survey. Hardcopies are available from the receptionist in the South Lanai. The 10th annual Backpack 4 Kids fundraiser continues throughout the month of September, which is National Hunger Awareness Month. As 1 in 3 children in Dallas Public Schools qualify for the weekend backpack the need is critical. Volunteers will be at a table outside the Book Shop. Donations in any amount help - $5 a week, $20 a month, $200 for the 40 week school year or $260 for an entire year. Checks, cash, and credit cards are accepted. Come visit the St. Mary’s Guild Table in the South Lanai! The “Goodies” are back. The St. Mary’s Guild cakes and cookies are available every Sunday in the South Lanai. The Feast of Saint Michael The Feast of Saint Michael on September 27 will be a special day. The 9:00 and 11:00 church services combined at 10:00. We will celebrate the church’s 70 Anniversary by honoring our 7th Decade parishioners. A list of those people, retrieved from our records, was published in the September Archangel. If you’ve been at Saint Michael 60 years or more and your name is not on the list, let us know. Contact Sandra Cox at scox@ saintmichael.org. We will also celebrate the ministry of Valerie and Bob Dannals with gifts, goodbyes, and a great reception. Defibrillators Located Around the Church. AEDs, emergency defibrillators, have been installed at several strategic locations throughout the church. They are in the South Lanai reception area, the north Lanai entrance, and in the prayer chapel of the Church Narthex.
Adult Bible Study to Hear Islam Expert. The Adult Bible Study – Abraham’s Children – welcomes Dr. Mohamed Lazzouni who will discuss “Islam and Modernity” at today’s class in the Coke Activities Room. Dr. Lazzouni is Senior Scholar and Professor at the Taqwa Seminary in Plano. He has long been involved in Islamic education in contemporary Muslim communities. He has a Ph.D. in Physics and is President of the anticounterfeiting division of Authentix. Meet Amistad Mission’s Executive Director at Saint Michael This Week. Chris King, will be at Saint Michael Thursday evening, September 10, at 6:00 in the Coke Activities Room to report on Amistad. We need donations of towels, underwear for boys, girls, and adults, athletic socks and pajamas to take to Amistad on the September 25th mission trip. Katie Riley, Executive Director of the Saint Michael Episcopal School, will address the Women of Saint Michael at its first fall luncheon Wednesday, September 16. Prayer Ministry Gets Power. The Rev. Dr. Bill Power will speak at this month’s meeting of the Prayer Ministry, Thursday, September 17. The meeting will begin at 5:30 in the Youth Space. Parish Nurse Ministry Addresses the Flu. Saint Michael’s Parish Nurse Ministry will focus on prevention and treatment of flu and pneumonia Sunday, September 20. Our nurses will be in the South Lanai to answer questions and take your blood pressure. Grief Workshop Scheduled to Begin September 23. A six-week workshop, “Comfort and Hope for the Journey of Grief,” will be held on Wednesday evenings from September 23 to October 28. The workshop led by the Faith and Grief organization, will meet in the Chapel Conference Room, 5:30-7:30. There is no fee. The application for Mission and Outreach Grants is available on our website. Inquirers’ Series Begins September 23. Do you want to know more about the Episcopal Church and Saint Michael and All Angels? The Inquirers’ Series takes place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 culminating with Confirmation on Sunday, November 8. Meeting in the Coke Activities Room, the Series welcomes newcomers, long-time members, skeptics, or those recharging their faith. It’s a great way to introduce friends to our church.
