THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT
APRIL 3, 2022 Welcome! Dear Friends, We are beginning the final week of Lent before we shift into Holy Week. The journey of Lent has been especially dynamic this year with world events and general uncertainty consuming so much of our attention, not to mention the busy-ness of our lives. I hope you’ve taken time to pause and listen, to see just how present God is in everything we do. God’s presence and love is a gift that can sustain us through anything this world throws at us. This week will conclude our Wednesday night Lenten Speaker Series. We welcome a longtime friend and member of Saint Michael, the Rev. Tom Blackmon. He will be our guest speaker Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the Saint Michael Chapel. Looking ahead, make plans to join us next week for Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday, we will welcome the Most. Rev. Michael B. Curry to Saint Michael as our guest preacher. As Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Curry has been a witness to Christian love and will bring amazing energy to our worship. Holy Week and Easter Sunday will be a great celebration of being back together in person! After Easter Sunday, make plans to join us for our BIG Anniversary celebration weekend. On Friday, April 22, Michael, A Musical will light up SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium stage for one night only! Tickets are free, but please reserve your tickets ahead. On Sunday, April 24, join us for our big

This selection from between the two World Wars sets the stage for the drama of Holy Week next week. Long phrases and a tremendous crescendo evoke almost a sense of inevitable doom. A more poignant, rhetorical section follows. Perhaps like the eye of the storm, this section is filled with a sense of hope and longing, yet eventually gives way to a return of the dark, opening material.

Celebrant Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins; People His mercy endures for ever. Celebrant Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord your God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31

Confession of Sin and Absolution
Kneeling
Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. All
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Celebrant
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Seated
The Lesson
Philippians 3:4b-14
If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I

Chanted by the Choir
When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, * then were we like those who dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, * and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, * “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us, * and we are glad indeed. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, * like the watercourses of the Negev. Those who sowed with tears * will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, * will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves. Gospel Acclamation

took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

The Sermon
The Reverend Mary Lessmann
The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
5
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form V Celebrant Let us now pray for the church and for the world. Lector

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
One of the most spectacular pieces to come from the English Renaissance, Tallis’ setting of the Salvator Mundi begins with the voices imitating each other in the typical 16thcentury style. However, the piece moves into a much more free style of writing, perhaps becoming more tender and prayerful, representing the introspection and devotion of the prayerful assembly. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
Kneeling
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
