Everything and everyone changes, except for one thing; the abiding, restorative love of God revealed in Jesus Christ and known through the power of the Holy Spirit. Liturgies shift, priorities are switched, buildings are renovated, employment is downsized, industries are transformed, those in public office step down, and rectors retire. And yet, in the midst of a changing environment, we are brought every morning to a sense that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. God told Abraham and Sarah to leave their ancestral home in Ur, to go south to a new land. As they went, they took a great leap of faith into the unknown. Abraham, Sarah, you and I are in progress, underway, always on a journey. At a deep level, God’s call and Christian ministry are always itinerant. And what is our assessment of our life together at Saint Michael and All Angels? To answer this question, I draw on an important story of the New Testament. After the resurrection, the Gospel of John gives us a poignant conversation between Peter and Jesus. Peter has returned to his mainstay of running a fishing business. It had been a complex and life-changing few years on the road with Jesus. And there by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus asked Peter three times: “Do you love me?” Notice that Jesus didn’t ask Peter, “How much money have you raised?” “What new programs have you started?” “What’s wrong with the youth program?” “What do you think of cont. on page 31

Saint Michael Launches Year of Discovery and Growth Saint Michael and All Angels is launching its new academic year with programs that will lead us to discover new depths to our faith, and help us grow in service to God’s children and church. This edition of the Archangel is a guide to Christian education and formation for everyone in our parish, from the youngest to the oldest. It outlines opportunities to serve our neighbors down the street, across town, and around the world. It offers ways to reflect on what God has done for us…and what we can do for God. The Feast of Saint Michael Saint Michael And All Angels Church Is 70 Years Old This Year It started in a room at the Park Cities YMCA on a hot August Sunday in 1945. In 1947 a group of people turned shovels of dirt in a far north Dallas field, breaking ground for the first permanent Saint Michael and All Angels.

Farewell to Bob and Valerie On the Feast of Saint Michael in 2007, The Rev. Dr. Bob Dannals became the Rector of Saint Michael and All Angels. On this Feast Day, eight years later, we celebrate his ministry as he and Valerie retire. — as he said — “from permanent, fulltime leadership of large congregations.” We will honor Bob and Valerie with thank Valerie and Bob Dannals you’s, well-wishes, and gifts at the 10:00 worship service in the church, and at the Feast of Saint Michael reception in the Garden Cloister. Forum – Saint Michael Chapel

The Fall and Spring Bible Study classes look different. In the fall, the theme is “Children of Abraham,” focusing on the patriarch and his significance for each of the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Leading the class on Islam is Dr. Robert Hunt, Professor of Christian Mission and Inter-religious Relations at SMU’s Perkins School of Theology; on Judaism, Dr. Richard Cohen; and on Christianity, Dr. Bill Power, Professor-Emeritus of Old Testament at Perkins School of Theology.

The basic theme for the Forum this fall is “Faith and Society.” Bob Dannals will open the series which includes Dallas Police Chief David Brown, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Miguel Solis, a member of the Dallas Independent School District Board and former Board President, Larry James, Head of City Square among others. In addition, The Forum is the venue where regular reports from the the Rector Search and Transition Committee will be discussed.

Book Studies (Whether You Have Read It Or Not) - Chapel Conference Room David Brown

There are so many books; so little time. So whether or not you have read the book featured each Sunday, gather in the Chapel Conference Room to hear a presentation on books old and new, fiction and non-fiction. This is not a “review” but is a conversation about the contents and significance of the book for the presenter. You are welcome to make your own observations if it is something you have read – or clarifications if it is something you have not.

Fellowship – Parish Hall This new class welcomes all parishioners, and particularly those in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, for fellowship, conversation, and learning about how our faith finds expression in our daily lives. Led by The Rev. Bill Murray and The Rev. Hunter Ruffin, as well as guest speakers, this class offers community, fellowship, and exploration of values we hold most dear and the challenges to our faith in today’s world. 4

Coffee And Conversation With Clergy Church Parlor Each Sunday in the parlor a member of the clergy will be available for casual conversation and fellowship. Members of the Vestry, Rector Search and Transition Committee, and Welcome Ministry will also be available to chat, too. So grab a bite from the St. Mary’s Guild and bring it to the parlor for coffee and a visit with our clergy and other parishioners.

All women who work at home or outside the home are welcome to an early morning study group to energize you as you start your day. Each week, small portions of a book on spiritual growth and prayer, and at times a relevant novel, are open for interpretation and discussion. This conversational size group meets weekly September - July. The facilitator is Shelly Vescovo, although every member of the group participates in leadership and in choosing reading materials. Imaging the Word Bible Study

Since the 4th century in the Christian era, congregations have been guided by the lectionary’s imaginative and disciplined journey through the Bible. Through the use of these readings and the liturgy, music, colors, movements and celebrations of the church year, the Bible and the arts can be brought together in a significant way. Imaging the Word is a resource providing visual arts, music, photography, prose, poetry, prayers, and commentary based on each Sunday’s lectionary readings. Ever want to stop the world and get off? Have a little peace and quiet? Come to Lectio Divina (Holy Reading), a focused way of reading scripture, poetry, songs, and prose. The meditation will slow the pace of life a bit, the readings will inspire, the prayer will connect you to God.

The class begins with a reading and moves into meditation for the remainder of the hour together. Men’s Lectionary Bible Study

Coke Activities Room, 7:00-8:00 a.m. Coordinated by David Loomis This group meets to discuss the lessons for the current week from the lectionary, exploring ways in which the passages speak to everyday life and our own spiritual journey. Lessons and commentary are emailed early each week to enable participants to familiarize themselves with the material. On a rotating basis, participants facilitate discussion by studying the lessons and reviewing available information on the subject. Following the session, participants who have time move on to the Flying Fish in Preston Center for breakfast. ..............

We are blessed with women with young children, in middle age, and grandmothers. It is reminiscent of being in a kitchen at the holidays with many generations of women cooking and sharing. Distinguished Lecture Series Saint Michael brings today’s leaders of religious thought and culture to our parish. Our Distinguished Lecturers are nationally recognized authors, commentators, and educators. Everyone is invited to the lectures and guests are welcome. The first lecture at 10:00 is in the Parish Hall at a combined adult Sunday class. The second lecture follows a lunch and includes time for Q and A. There is a $15.00 charge per person for the lunch. Adult Fellowship Groups Home Communions

Men: Join the Brotherhood

In Advent and Lent, Home Communions take place in parishioners’ homes, patterned after the worship and meals of the early Church. These are casual and visitor-friendly gatherings open to members of Saint Michael and the friends and family of the hosts. The clergy bring the order of service. The hosting household provides the bread and wine and contacts people in the neighborhood. Many hosts provide a light meal following the service to encourage fellowship.

Men, you should consider joining Saint Michael’s chapter of the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew, the longest continually-serving ministry in the Episcopal Church. You will be joining thousands of men around the world in the Brotherhood’s goals of prayer, service, and study. We meet the first and third Saturdays of each month at 8:30 in the Drake Room. Additionally, Saint Michael’s is hosting the annual meeting for all Brotherhood of Saint Andrew chapters in the diocese on December 5th and your participation would be most welcome! Faith, Fellowship and Food Foyer Supper Clubs

Men of Saint Michael

Saint Michael Foyer Supper Clubs are a great opportunity to meet and make new friends or just get to know each other better; plus you get to enjoy a great meal and exciting fellowship. Foyer Supper Clubs are made up of eight to twelve people grouped together for 5 months meeting monthly in members’ homes for supper. One member of the group coordinates the schedule. Usually, dinner is held in a different home each month. The host typically provides the main course and others bring supplemental side dishes and beverages. At the end of five months, new groups are formed so that everyone can get to know new people.

This Fall and during the Spring of 2016, the Men of Saint Michael are hoping to revisit the “good ole days.” We will continue our bible study and tacos on the last Friday of each month. The September breakfast will be on the 25th at 7:00 a.m. in the Coke Activities Room. We have started to grow as a program and reach 30-40 men for each breakfast. There is no preparation needed. Just come and join us. The Men are also planning three evening events this Fall and three evening events in the Spring to reach those who cannot make it for breakfast. Keep your ears open for upcoming events. If you have ideas of what we can do together or want to help plan, get in touch with The Rev. Bill Murray or Jack Rubarth.

If you decide to be a coordinator you will set the date for the initial dinner and notify everyone on the list. At that gathering, the group can decide on the best day and time for future dinners. 9

Singles ‘N Saints

The Prime Timers are the more mature members of Saint Michael and All Angels, generally ages sixty-five plus, although everyone is welcome. Meetings are on the first and third Thursdays of each month, September through May. In-house luncheon programs, on the first Thursday, present book reviews, performances by actors or musicians, interesting lectures from the business or arts community, or talks from favorite journalists. On the third Thursday, the ‘P.T. Cruisers’ take well-planned trips to interesting area locations. Coordinator is Ruth Mason. Make your reservations with Mary Davis at 214-363-7761

Singles-N-Saints builds community and friendships among single adults in the context of the larger church. Programs are social, spiritual, and educational, while being just plain fun! During the year, we invite everyone to join us for a Fall kickoff party, Christmas Party, Advent Home Communion, Super Bowl Party, Easter Brunch, and a spring cooking class, a sailing trip on the lake and more.

The first in-house program is “A Farewell to Bob and Valerie Dannals” on September 3. The first away program is a train ride to Fort Worth on September 17. ..............

St. Mary’s Guild St. Mary’s Guild provides opportunities for service and fellowship to women who prefer evening meetings which are held at different times to accommodate our membership. St. Mary’s Guild welcomes new members to join one of our four Bake Teams. Each team member provides homebaked goodies and staffs the “Yield to Temptation” table one Sunday morning a month from September through May. All proceeds benefit local Dallas charities. St. Mary’s Guild members represent a wide cross-section of women at Saint Michael. It is a fun group and a great place to “get connected,” especially if your volunteer time is limited. Women of Saint Michael Learning, Fellowship, Service, and Joy – Keynote Women of Saint Michael Luncheon Series Speakers at the Women’s Luncheon series will emphasize the year’s theme Learning, Fellowship, Service and Joy. President, Margaret Cervin, in her newsletter set the stage for a busy and fruitful year saying, “With a parish of dynamic and caring women of all ages and varied interests, we are fortunate to share in the warmth and love surrounding Saint Michael and All Angels.” The monthly luncheons will be held in Parish Hall beginning at 11:30.

Wednesday, September 16 Katie Riley, Executive Director, Saint Michael Episcopal School Under Katie’s leadership, Saint Michael Episcopal School (formerly Saint Michael Preschool) has established a reputation for preparing its students to enter the area’s competitive private and public elementary schools by providing an individualized curriculum, support services, and parental guidance. Katie will speak about the future of the school and what it means to our parish.

Wednesday, November 18 Shandra Carter, Executive Director, Freedom Place Freedom Place is a residential treatment facility for victims of child sex trafficking. An accomplished mental health professional for more than 17 years, Shandra has dedicated her career to serving children who have suffered from sexual exploitation and abuse. She has led dozens of seminars on abuse prevention, sex trafficking, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention.

Wednesday, January 20 Mabrie Jackson, President and CEO, North Texas Commission North Texas Growth and Why it Matters will be discussed by Mabrie Jackson, President of the North Texas Commission, a consortium of governmental agencies and businesses working to enhance the economic and environmental vitality of the greater Dallas/ Fort Worth region. In addition to leading the Commission, Mabrie has served on the Plano City Council and as interim CEO of the Plano Chamber of Commerce.

Wednesday, October 21 Jann Mackey – Historic Neighborhoods of Dallas: The Heart of the City Jann is a frequent lecturer in SMU’s Continuing and Professional Education programs, as well as for local historic preservation organizations and others. In 2006, she was awarded a fellowship from the Royal Oaks Society, The British National Trust, and The Attingham Trust to study British country houses. She serves on the board of Preservation Dallas and the Saint Michael and All Angels Foundation.

Oprah called Courtney Ferrell an inspired change-agent in the world of imagination, creativity, and innovation, and she’s bringing her talents to the Women of Saint Michael Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

The St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange will move into its new store in September. The address will be the same – 5 Highland Park Village – but it will be just west of its old location and next to the new grocery store.

Courtney has built a successful career provoking organizations, CEOs, and college students to think and behave differently. She is writing a book for young women on the secrets to being extraordinary. ..............

Living in the Resurrection: After Perfect The Women’s Retreat, on the shores of beautiful Lake Texhoma, will examine learning about living, about enjoying, about learning, about accepting ourselves for who we are. The retreat will be led by The Rev. Laurie Brock, Rector of St. Michael the Archangel in Lexington, Kentucky. She is author of several books and articles, has an active social media ministry, and leads conferences and retreats on the themes of humor, holiness, and wholesomeness. Cost of the retreat is $200 before December 15 and $250 after that date.

The Exchange has an all-volunteer staff and gives all of its proceeds to outreach ministries of the Women of Saint Michael and the church. Over the past 49 years, the Women have granted more than $8-million to charities, primarily in Dallas County. Last year, more than $500,000 was given to 68 non-profit agencies. Most of money is raised from the Woman’s Exchange and the bi-annual Parish Party staged by the Women of Saint Michael.

Adult Confirmation, Reception & Reaffirmation – November 8 The sacramental rite of Confirmation is for those who wish to make an adult, public affirmation of their faith. Those who have been “Received” or “Confirmed” in the Episcopal Church may Reaffirm their baptismal covenant, and the rite of Reception is for those who have been confirmed in another denomination (e.g., Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, etc.) but who now want to become an Episcopalian. As our family counts our many blessings, Saint Michael and All Angels rises to the top. From the first time we watched our young children run to sing (and dance!) in the Joy Mass choir or chant “I heard it” as the bread was broken, we knew we had found a home here. Spiritually we have all grown in this community. Joy Mass, Catechesis classes, Adult Formation classes, the annual Nativity Pageant and even the weekly treat at a bake sale make us feel whole. Stewardship Giving is a Family Affair Think Share, Save, Spend The next time you find yourself thinking about money when you hear the word “stewardship,” think of yourself. Moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, and anyone who has children anywhere in their lives can help by talking about what they do with sharing, saving, and spending. Tell about those who inspired and encouraged you to healthier habits of sharing and saving while making better spending decisions. Look around at your brothers and sisters in Christ to admire the treasures of your faith community. We are God’s treasures. He loves us, polishes us, protects us, and asks that we give Him the glory by sharing our gifts and our talents with each other. We belong to God, and are merely the stewards of His treasures (each other) as we journey together in this life. It is important that our children and youth understand that the church does not define their gifts and talents. The church helps to grow into them, and to use them in service to God. You can encourage this with our children and youth in many ways; create an Annual Giving Card, plan times to talk as a family about your giving, share with others how your family gives back and remembering to include how you share, save, spend your gifts from God.

For Your Information New North Campus Sports Field Completed – Opening in October Over the summer a new sports field was completed on the church’s north campus adjacent to the “Little Angels Playground.” During July the land was leveled and an irrigation system was installed. In August electrical power was provided to both the field and the playground, and sod was laid on the field. The sports field will open in October after the new turf has had time to take root.

Prayer Ministry The Prayer Ministry is made up of the Sunday Service Prayer Teams, the Daily Intercessory Prayer Ministry, the Centering Prayer Group, and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. The Prayer Ministry meets as a group each month on the third Thursday. This year the evening meetings will start at 5:30 and will end by 7:00. A new offering will be extended on the second Wednesdays in October and December Lunch, Prayer & Bach! This 55 minute program will provide time for noonday prayer, a music reflection played by James Diaz on the organ, and intercessory prayer in the Saint Michael Chapel. You can bring a bag lunch and enjoy this quiet space for a mini-Sabbath during your day.

Yoga Ministry Christian Yoga Ministry, returns on Monday, September 14 at 5:30 in the Youth Center. Yoga, means “coming together” or union, and serves to connect the body, mind, and spirit. It is another means to open our hearts and minds into the love of Christ. As Christians, God cares how we take care of our bodies. One of the most powerful parts of the time spent together, in addition to the health benefits, is the community building that yoga is offering us as we spend time in silence and relaxation at the end of our sessions. Grief Ministries Faith and Grief Luncheon Ministry A Faith and Grief Luncheon is scheduled on the second Thursday of each month in the Coke Activities Room at 12:00 Noon. Recovery Advocates Recovery Advocates is made up of volunteers who work to provide the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of those who experience substance abuse or other addictions.

Blood Drive Saint Michael’s Parish Nurse Ministry along with the American Red Cross sponsor two blood drives each year, one in October and one in February. Saint Michael parishioners have generously given this gift of life that has aided many of our own parishioners as well as others in need. Our next blood drive is scheduled for Sunday, October 4. It is a place to get information, referrals, feedback and a feeling of safety from other women who have experienced cancer and from those who are in the fight right now. A licensed professional counselor meets with the group weekly and is supported by a Pastoral Care Priest. Good Shepherds — Always Looking for a few Good Shepherds! As a member of Saint Michael you belong to a very special and LARGE parish. There will also be illnesses and death. Most of us will need love and understanding during these times. Volunteers of the Good Shepherd Ministry respond to needs within their own neighborhood. The Gathering The Gathering, launched by Saint Michael and All Angels, is an active ministry in downtown Dallas with a primary focus on creating a community for homeless people. Austin Street Centre Started by members of Saint Michael and All Angels, the parish continues to serve the men and women that stay at Austin Street Shelter. On the first Wednesday of each month, parishioners gather to serve a hot meal of meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls, and cookies to the 325 men and women staying in the shelter that evening. The food is prepared the night before at Saint Michael. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and to serve the food. By Our Love On the third Monday of each month, parishioners go serve approximately 50 people living in one of the residence halls operated by AIDS Services of Dallas. Each person volunteering brings a portion of the meal to be served that evening. Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels is a ministry that is squarely focused on providing food for those who are not able to provide for themselves. Drivers volunteer two to three hours of their time once a month to drive meals to elderly and shut-ins throughout the community. On Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, the regular drivers are given a break, and it is a great opportunity to get the entire family involved in doing outreach ministry work. Caring and Sharing - Mission Outreach Jubilee Park and Community Center Jubilee Park and Community Center grew out of an initiative started by Saint Michael and All Angels parish nearly 20 years ago. As the parish worked to revitalize one of the poorest neighborhoods in Dallas, Jubilee Park and Community Center emerged. Today, the community center offers a myriad of ways for parishioners to get involved in serving the Jubilee community. Volunteer opportunities include helping with senior lunch every Wednesday and Friday, the after school program, and Jubilee summer camp. In addition to the regular volunteer opportunities, Jubilee Park and Community Center hosts special events: The Back to After School Bash on September 10th from 5:30-7:00. All children enrolled in Jubilee’s Out of School Time Program are invited along with their families. Mr. Donavan will be there to motivate the kids for the school year! Volunteers are needed to serve food and help with games. We are also looking for school supplies and healthy snack donations. National Outreach Ministries Rosebud Hunger Initiative The Kids’ Cafe, at the Rosebud Indian Reservation, is a program that feeds approximately 50 kids per day, four days a week. Operated in conjunction with local food banks and through a partnership with Saint Michael and All Angels parish, The Kids’ Cafe supports hunger-risk children throughout the year. In addition to The Kids’ Cafe, Saint Michael and All Angels supports a weekend feeding program for HeadStart children on the reservation. Each weekend, the children receive a backpack filled with nutritious foodstuffs to help them over a weekend. The backpacks are distributed to children during the 40-week academic year. Rosebud Mission Trip

The Out of School Time Program. Beginning September 14th you can serve as either a classroom assistant or a tutor with a minimum time commitment of one hour a week. Coaches are also needed for soccer beginning September 14th.

For the past several years, Saint Michael and All Angels has taken a mission trip to Rosebud, South Dakota to work alongside members of the Lakota Tribe. The work completed by Saint Michael and All Angels parishioners is coordinated with the local priest serving the Episcopal congregations on and around the reservation and with tribal elders. Caring and Sharing - Mission Outreach International Outreach Ministries Sancti Spiritus, Cuba For the past few years, Saint Michael and All Angels has fostered a relationship with a parish in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba in coordination with the Diocese of Cuba. As the relationship blossomed, Saint Michael and All Angels was able to assist with the purchase of a new parish building and renovations to that building. Tela, Honduras Mission Trip The mission trip to Tela, Honduras is an adult-focused mission trip that usually takes place during February. Over the course of 7-8 days, parishioners travel to Honduras to work in partnership with the local parish and school. In addition to working in Tela, parishioners also work alongside 4 other communities in the surrounding area. The bulk of the work completed by parishioners includes providing fluoride treatments for 500600 children and construction projects that will assist the sustainability of the parish, the school, or the surrounding communities. The cost to go on the mission trip is around $1,400 per person and includes all transportation, room, and board. All ages are welcome, no language skills are required as we work closely with bilingual students, and the physical requirements are minimal. Honduras Threads Mission Trip Honduras Threads was started in 2002 during an Episcopal Church mission trip. Quickly, it turned into a year-around mission. Honduras Threads works with six sewing co-ops in rural communities outside Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. There are more than 50 members in the six cooperatives. Honduras Threads includes year-round work as orders are fulfilled. Volunteers are needed to help with order fulfillment, tagging new items, and helping at shows around the country. In addition, Saint Michael and All Angels parish supports a mission trip to Honduras to work with the cooperatives in an effort to improve the business acumen of the women that are the driving force behind the success of Honduras Threads. Amistad Mission - Bolivia Bolivia is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, where 64 percent of the people live at or below the poverty level. Amistad’s children’s village and rural development programs actively respond to the needs of the poor in Bolivia and prayerfully seek solutions for the root causes of poverty and abuse. With the aid of its U.S. church partners and volunteers, Amistad fosters change in communities and the lives of individuals. Each year in the early fall, Saint Michael and All Angels takes a pilgrimage to Amistad to visit the children living in the house supported by Saint Michael and All Angels and to work alongside members of the community. Children, Youth and Family Sunday Sunday Morning Childcare Childcare is available for infants and toddlers to age 5 every Sunday in Rooms 7, 9, and 10*, from 8:30 to 12:30. *Room changes and ages are posted in the hallway, outside classroom doors, as needed.

Sunday Morning Christian Formation Sunday School is available for children 3 and up beginning August 30th through May 22nd at 10:00. No registration is required for age 3.

Holy Moly – Preschool (Age 4) through Second Grade These classroom-based groups will be led by adult volunteers and organized by grade level. Together, the groups will engage in the scripture by watching a short video and by reading it again in a children’s Bible story book. Discussion and activities will bring the stories to life and help share how they are important in our daily lives. For more information, please contact Ellen Talley – etalley@ saintmichael.org. More volunteers are needed. Please consider teaching a block of Sundays or once each month.

Children’s Choir Ashley Westgate, children’s musician, each week will teach kindergarten to fifth grade children how to be worship leaders by being a part of the ministry of music. The children’s choir will expand their skills as musicians through practice, prayer, and fellowship. It will sing regularly in several different worship services over the course of the year. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Catechesis is a Montessori-based classroom experience where children enter the story with use of manipulatives/ visual stories. It provides a unique opportunity for children to come in contact with scripture, the liturgy of the church, and sacred history in engaging ways. Two levels are offered on Sunday morning – Level 1 (Age 4-6) and Level 2 (Age 6-9). Available spots have been filled. Bridge Sunday School Third graders will have a chance to “connect” with each other and with the Old Testament this year with their new curriculum, “Connect.” They will delve deeper into the stories of the Old Testament that will help them understand the foundation of the Bible and our faith. Edge Sunday Series Fourth and fifth graders explore the Bible this year in 7 different series. What part will your child play in God’s Story? If your child is age 3 – 2nd grade, their parts are assigned so all they need is a registration. Children, Youth and Family MISSION & OUTREACH North Dallas Shared Ministries November is NDSM month at Saint Michael and All Angels. Join us as we help collect food all month for our friends and neighbors of North Dallas. November 15 will be the day families are invited to deliver the food and stock the shelves. Edge Lock-in Edge Lock-In - Join in this Edge tradition during a new month. This year the 4th & 5th graders will be exploring the church and grounds with an All Saints & All Souls Day theme. Glow-in-the-dark games & karaoke, sugar skull cookies, Mexican hot chocolate, toasting marshmallows, and so much more. The Edge Lock-In will start at 7:30 on October 23rd. ADULT SMALL GROUP Sip ‘n’ Doodle Adults are invited to join us for a nice cup of tea, some relaxing music, and coloring. This new adult coloring book trend is booming. It has been featured in The New Yorker and Boston Globe as the new stress reliever. Sip ‘n’ Doodle will begin September 13th and will take place on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Youth Ministry

Disciples class is a 6th grade confirmation and Sunday School class. It focuses on the way Confirmation furthers our faith journey with a focus on a biblical foundation and a knowledge of the church. In Disciples class, students participate in a high-energy, interactive, large group experience and also spend an entire year with a “tribe,� or small group, led by two adults. In addition to Sunday morning classes, there are two service opportunities - one in the fall and one in the spring - followed by a retreat at Sky Ranch. Saint Michael Youth Work On Mission Trips Every summer, Saint Michael’s youth participate in mission trips. This year our high school students went to Oregon where they worked at beach cleanup project and with the Portland Police Department’s program serving disadvantaged and homeless families. For Your Information Continued from page 1 marriage equality?” In the end of any period of our life, there’s only one question from Jesus: “Do you love me?” And the subsequent command: “Feed my sheep!” I still hear Archbishop of Canterbury, Donald Coggan, asking my seminary class in 1980: “Do you love Jesus?” “Yes, of course I do,” I thought, “that is why I’m scheduled to be ordained a priest.” Then the Archbishop went on to describe what the mission would look like: countless meetings, difficult money matters and budgets, transformative sacramental events, heartwrenching burials, healing encounters, numerous holy meals, strategic plans, diocesan dealings, stubborn bishops, inspiring music, raucous fun, melancholy moments, prayer gatherings, disciple-making, tedious church politics, glorious outpourings, life-changing outreach, important justice projects, resurrection occurrences. His description encapsulates three and one-half decades of immense fulfillment and gratitude as a priest in the Episcopal Church! I’m tempted in this last letter in the Archangel to recount in detail the litany of accomplishments during the past eight years. But suffice it to say that many times over we have been compelled to say, “Yes, Lord, we love you, and let us count the ways.” Within the compelling nature of living into “retirement” — what can be called “the third chapter” — is the pain of departure. Even as we embrace the new venue we are counting the losses. I hope you know what a remarkable parish you are. As you enter the transition I hope you will give your full support, energy, resources (including generous financial giving), and participation to and for the future of this congregation. Yes, change in leadership can be both inspiring and difficult. I encourage you to offer to God in an answering love your very best in the years to come -- to be a broad, “big tent,” welcoming, inclusive, mission-minded community that is creedal at the core and wide open around the edges.
