SMagazine Issue 5

Page 1

Yet again, hello and welcome to Issue 5 of SMagazine! It’s hard to actually think that we’ve already published five issues, and the support we’ve received from the whole community has been amazing, so for that I say ‘thank you’. It’s also been my pleasure to welcome two new people to the team, zTDOTi and Miamii. They’ve joined us to help us write articles and reviews, and you can see some of their work inside this issue. I’m sure you’ll love their work more than my boring old articles! Inside this issue, we’ve left the comfort of our homes and gone to explore the vast selection of community lots you’ll find in The Sims 3. From parks to resorts, we’ve got a bit of everything covered inside this issue. We’ve also got a showcase of some of the very best custom worlds in The Sims 3, so you can pick the very best to settle down in with your family. And, as always, I hope you’ll enjoy reading this issue as much as I’ve enjoyed editing it.

SIDETRACKED

FOR A SECOND Euro Truck Simulator. Now, I know that it’s not the most exciting-sounding game out there, and if you prefer shooter games, it isn’t the game for you, I’ll admit. In fact, this isn’t really the magazine for people who like shooter games. But, I digress.

Which

Colours?

Picking the right colour scheme for your project is vital in how the project will look in the end. Whether you’re looking to redesign your living room, spruce up the kitchen or give the front of your house a makeover, it’s very important to make sure you use the right colour scheme. However, it’s also important to realize that it’s okay to break away from the decorating norms every once in a while. There’s dozens of ways to use simple colour pallets to make bold statements. Mismatched furniture, feature walls, bold ac-

cents—little splashes of colour here and there help give a room a different personality. So, if you think your room is looking a bit old, don’t instantly decide to go and repaint the walls—what about a bright red dining table? Or some orange curtains? Bright colours are back, and can fit in almost everywhere. City lofts can be given an industrial yet lived-in feel with brightly coloured walls. Your old shed? A quick red coat of paint will do the trick. What we’re trying to say here is that bold colours don’t have to instantly make a room ugly.

Colours Tip!

Free web programs such as Adobe Kuler provide hundreds of different colour palettes complete with RGB values, so you can use these programs to pick the perfect colour scheme for your next project.

The Sims 2 was first released in 2004. It had 8 expansion packs and 10 stuff packs, providing countless hours of fun and entertainment. While it preceded the Sims 3, many of the core values stuck when the new game was created.

Sims (or NPCs as we used to say) will run to the course of their lives and get married, have children, earn a promotion, or even move away. In the Sims 2, the idea of story progression was not as strong, but was still evident in small parts; for example, the game came with its own set of characters whose lives were somehow One of the major differences be- intertwined with each other, tween the Sims 2 and Sims 3 is the whether it be Don Lothario and feature of “Story Progression. the Caliente sisters or Darren This feature allows Sims in the Dreamer and Cassandra Goth neighborhood to continue living (remember those storylines?). As as if someone else was controlling you played one family, it would them. While the player is focused alter the course of lives of anothon their own family, all the other er, but would not be entirely evi70

dent until you switched to play that family. Another major change in the Sims 3 is the ability for your Sim to seamlessly walk around the neighbourhood, without being restricted by lot or lot size. Sims in the Child life stage and older are able to leave the house whenever they please, visiting community lots and their neighbours at any time of the day. But watch out! Children have a strict curfew of 10:00 p.m., and some neighbours may not want visitors at such late hours. Abide by these helpful tips to keep your Sims happy and their relationships with others strong.

What’s the first thing you want to do when you install The Sims? Create a family, of course! The Sims 3 has the most advanced version of Create A Sim in any of the Sims games so far. Players are allowed to choose their Sims’ facial structure, skin tone, body shape, age, outfit, hairstyle, accessories, and countless other specific details. In The Sims 2, players could only choose between two body shapes: normal or fat. However in The Sims 3, body weight is determined by moving a slider. Muscle tone, muscle definition, and breast size have also been introduced by installing The Sims 3: Late Night expansion pack, or downloading the required patch. The Create A Sim feature is also

where you choose your Sim’s personality traits and ambitions. There are 63 traits in the game, ranging from Friendly and Lucky, to Technophobe or Daredevil.

Ever wondered how SMagazine happens? If not, read this anyway (we had a page to spare). It starts with the editor taking a trip to some Sims 3 CC sites (thesimsresource.com was used for most creations inside this issue). Each time he finds something, it’s into Microsoft Publisher to write an article about it. This is where everything goes down, be it the designing of the cover or the writing of the articles. He might take to Twitter to ask people what they want to see (follow us @smagazineofcl) and he then tends to find more ideas from there. Once the issue is finished, he checks everything, and then exports it into a .PDF using Microsoft Publisher. Then it’s to Issuu.com to upload the magazine, and then to literally every single social network to advertise the magazine. And, then, you get to read it...like you’re doing right now! G
