Whilst comedian costs have remained largely the same, profitability for venues through comedy clubs has increased even since the year 2000. Target comedy audiences are typically between 20-45 yr olds and they have simply been to so many quiz and karaoke nights through the 1990's, the opportunity to enjoy a night of refreshingly real entertainment is a real draw. Whilst as a nation, the British public has been seen as unadventurous, it has begun to become more outspoken and 'alternative' comedy has answered this calling. Following the outstanding success of the single documentary, head of comedy in Wales, Martin Ingram commissioned 'Funny Business' - a talent competition to find the next Welsh comic star. Aired on BBC2 Wales in a primetime spot in Jan/Feb 2008, the series gained considerable critical acclaim and even received in-depth coverage from former Welsh circuit star, Max Boyce. The Comedy Club is set to continue in a run of series' for the BBC, although these details can't be discussed at this stage. In summary, the word 'alternative' is barely used when referring to the UK comedy circuit. Material may sometimes be blue, some self depricating, some casting an eye over our multicultural nation, but all of it is enjoyed by thousands of paying audience members every week and there seems no end to the height to which The Comedy Club network, and and the comedy club website can grow.
