Small Business Festival 2017

Victoria’s vibrant and innovative small businesses play a crucial role in keeping our economy strong and the Andrews Labor Government is working harder than ever to help them succeed. One of the great privileges of my job is that I get to meet so many small businesses and see first-hand how hard they work and how important they are to their local communities. This government deeply values the contribution small businesses make to our economy and our society. Victoria has more than 556,000 small businesses which deliver nearly half of the state’s private sector jobs and contribute a third of the state’s output in goods and services. That is why we are getting on with the job of lowering taxes, cutting red tape, creating the right conditions for growth and making sure small businesses get a fair go. We have brought forward payroll tax cuts, strengthened the Victorian Small Business Commissioner’s remit to resolve disputes and introduced a Fair Payment Code to address the issue of late payments.

Small Business Festival Victoria is a celebration of this great sector and a great chance to share new ideas and skills and make sure small business owners and entrepreneurs have the resources they need to be successful. This year’s festival is bigger and better than ever with more than 500 events spread across regional Victoria and metroMelbourne covering topics ranging from business planning to marketing, to social media, networking and financial management. A real focus of this year’s festival will be how emerging technologies are affecting small businesses and how we can harness them to improve productivity and open up new opportunities. Another new initiative is a week-long celebration of the fantastic contribution women in business make to the sector.

One of the great strengths of Victoria is that we are an open, globally connected and diverse society. This year’s festival will celebrate the rich diversity of Victoria’s multicultural business community and there will be sessions on how we can tap into international networks to track business trends and access new markets. Nearly 30,000 people attend the festival each year and it is a great chance for small businesses to network, to learn about the range of government services available year-round and to hear inspiring stories from successful business leaders. Whether you are running a small business or thinking about starting one, I encourage you to get involved in this year’s festival and look forward to meeting many of you there. The Hon. Philip Dalidakis, MP Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade

Small Business Festival 2017

Want your business to soar? Meet Lydia Lassila OAM Lydia Lassila is an Olympic gold medalist, mother and successful businesswoman who will inspire you with her story of how she turned adversity into advantage. The aerial skier, who is training for her fifth Winter Olympics next year in South Korea, founded BodyICE in 2006 after suffering a career-threatening injury. While jumping in the semi-finals of her second Winter Olympics in 2006, Lydia landed badly and ruptured her knee. Frustrated with the inefficiency of the cold therapy products available during rehabilitation, Lydia set her sights on designing and developing a product to fulfil her needs.

BodyICE – a range of travelsmart icepacks – was born. Since having children, Lydia has also expanded the range to include remedial maternal and child-friendly cold and heat packs that are sold around the world. Join Lydia for dinner and learn how having a clear, unwavering vision means you can not only achieve your goals, but take your business to new heights.

The Festival Roadshow travels through Bendigo, Geelong, Warrnambool, Wangaratta, Ballarat and Traralgon. See overleaf for a location near you.

Reed Gift Fair (Trade event only)

Meeting demands of customers in a new era of ecommerce

Women in Small Business Networking Evening

Presented by Reed Exhibitions

Presented by Vodafone

Presented by Australia Post

“Prepare yourself for the Christmas rush. Be the first to uncover the latest innovations and stay one step ahead of your competitors as you source thousands of trending pieces and favourite products across eight distinct categories at the Reed Gift Fair. Attend industry-leading education sessions at this trade-only fair that will bring together 800 brand new and returning exhibitors across two enormous venues (MCEC & Melbourne Showgrounds). Please note; Reed Gift Fairs is a trade-only event and admission is free upon validation of the necessary trade credentials and completion of the registration process.

We live in a culture of instant gratification that is both exciting and helpful. But for small businesses, customer expectations of rapid and personalised service can create a demand that is challenging to meet – particularly when you’re up against large companies already delivering it. This session will share strategies to thrive in this non-stop economy that small-business owners can apply straight away: from making your business smartphone friendly, to hiring staff whose job it is to rapidly respond to customers.

The number of Australian women operating their own businesses has steadily increased over the past 20 years. Celebrate their inspirational stories at this free event hosted by Australia Post that champions the accomplishments of women in small business. Share practical knowledge and experience, tips and helpful ideas from small business owners guest speakers. A strong network is a key step to success. Network with like-minded women afterwards and take advantage of this chance to build some wonderful business connections, while learning how to improve and grow your small business. For anyone already in business or those aspiring to start one.

Empowering financial freedom for women

Schnitz founder Roman Dyduk

Presented by Sofcorp Financial Services

Presented by GV BRaIN

Workshop style presentation outlining the importance of financial independence given the changes to society and how far we have come as women. Tracey Sofra will help you focus on gaining financial education and literacy with specific examples of how to achieve clarity, confidence and the ability to manage your own money.

Meet the name and the business brain behind Schnitz. Schnitz began its business journey in 2007 when Roman opened with a single restaurant. The Polish-born schnitzel expert had been at the helm of restaurants in the past, all featuring his signature schnitzel on the menu. But this was different. This time, Roman and his sons, Andrew and Tom, had a single-minded focus to perfect the art of schnitzel making. The Schnitz way is not a production line, but a perfection line – with each schnitzel made to order. Since those humble but dedicated beginnings, Schnitz has grown from one restaurant to more than 60. To continue being the benchmark in schnitzel making is their sole aim, combining culinary tradition with modern methods and the freshest ingredients Australia has to offer.

ANZ Mildura presents: #womenempoweringwomen

The art of listening

Future Crunch networking luncheon

Presented by Mildura Regional Development

Presented by Mildura Regional Development

Presented by Mildura Regional Development

Join us at this truly inspiring evening as our female panel share their insights, stories and the key tips that have helped to carry and sustain each of them along their professional and personal journeys. Be energised and empowered by the life-changing experiences of others as you network with like-minded women.

No wonder it’s hard to pay attention. The average person spends nearly half their time ‘mind wandering’ – that is, doing one thing but thinking about something else. According to American Advertising Association estimates, consumers receive 3,000 marketing messages per day, all competing for their attention. Neurologists studying this phenomenon have found people are overwhelmed, easily distracted and ‘shutting down’. In this noisy and fast-paced world, the ability to listen with focus and clarity has become a must-have skill. Come along to this fascinating presentation and discover what the art of listening can add to your business and personal life.

Get an unexpected perspective on what the future looks like from Dr Angus Hervey and Tané Hunter, the dynamic duo better known as Future Crunch. Together they deliver mind-blowing presentations to generate optimism, shift perceptions and create new and better ways of doing things in the 21st Century. Future Crunch is a collective of innovative brains who combine expertise in economics, coding, politics and data analytics, with design, art and music. Each Future Crunch experience is a rich fusion of customised research designed to ‘crunch’ your particular industry’s future. This presentation includes a two-course meal and drinks at bar prices.
