Karina Jambrak lives and breathes her dream job right from the comfort of her beautiful studio based in Sydney, Australia. Karina’s colourful personality and kind heart is reflected through her illustration pieces, which are filled with rich beautiful colours. We had the pleasure of getting to know Karina a little better and learn about some of her recent projects. As many of us know our country was burning, in the fight for much needed support and donations, Karina took matters and paint into her own hands to show her support. Here auctioning off her first original painting on a 150cm by 90cm canvas.

I am a coffee fuelled, colour & pattern loving, plant and interior design obsessed artist based in Sydney, Australia.

Karina started this beautiful piece with no direction in mind, except the inspiration drawn from a poem ‘My Country’ by Dorothea Mackeller, here “A Landing Of Sweeping Plains” was created. With every single dollar of the winning bidder of $6200 going towards Treading Lightly Inc and Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. So who is Karina? I am a coffee fuelled, colour & pattern loving, plant and interior design obsessed artist based in Sydney, Australia. I have drawn for as long as I can remember. The first amount of money I ever earned was from selling artworks at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach markets back in 2001 when I was 17.

Fresh out of high school with no job, no qualifications and no money I painted a batch of canvases and sat at the markets week after week. In 2005 I graduated from the University of NSW, College of Fine Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in Design. Since then I have pursued a design career combining my artistic ability with graphic skills and have been fortunate enough work with some iconic Australian brands such as Mambo, Tigerlily & Westpac. For me, there is nothing better than bringing happiness to people through art — so, after 13 years of working in design, I have decided to go back to my roots and embark on a new journey of selling my illustrations. What inspires your artwork? All of my drawings are inspired by the colours and patterns found in nature. My art is full of rich tones and intricate patterns.

How did your passion for Illustration began and turned into a full-time job? I previously worked in fashion as a graphic designer. I was very content - growing my little fam and working in a company that I loved. However 2018 wasn’t overly kind to us. My husband had to go through open heart surgery and not long after that the company I was working for underwent a massive restructure and my position was made redundant. Having two young children who were 9 months and 4 years old at the time, and neither my husband or I able to work, we hit a pretty low place. I find myself always pulled back to art & illustrating, it’s a form of therapy for me I guess… so that was what I turned to. I created a few artworks and put them on Instagram and after a lot of encouragement from my family and friends I decided to start my illustration business. I nutted out a business plan and decided it was the only option for me – I needed my work to be flexible for my family

and also I wanted to be able to earn an income doing what I love. I started my online store in April 2019 and once I fully committed, my little business grew. I quit my part time job at the end of September 2019 and am currently working on my business full time. Tell us about your choice of Medium? My artworks are hand drawn with copic markers. Illustrations are then scanned and Giclee printed on 100% textured cotton rag, 310gsm museum grade fine art paper (OBA - FREE with no optical brighteners). They are printed in Australia using the highest quality materials and are made to order to prevent waste. I have more recently created an original painting that I auctioned off to raise money for the victims of the bushfires. Tiny Homes are a sustainable and low-impact living style, that enables you to live a flexible life, without always the restrictions of a fixed dwelling. We had the beautiful opportunity to catch up with Hayden and Ashleigh and hear where their home on wheels has taken them recently.

Meet Hayden and Ashleigh Hayden is a carpenter and I worked in administration before we decided to quit our jobs and start travelling Australia. We both grew up on the Central Coast in NSW, with really close knit families which made the decision to leave and travel that little bit harder. We have always been interested in photography and our travels have given us the opportunity to explore our passion for taking photos.

What was the turning point to make you pack everything into your beautiful home on wheels and start blogging? We knew that we were going to struggle to buy a home due to the property boom, so we decided that converting a bus into a tiny home of our own was the next best option. Being able to live, work and travel all around Australia also played a big part in our decision. What made you choose to visit the NT ? Visiting the NT had always been a dream of ours, it’s a combination of the dusty red dirt roads, tropical vibes, an abundance of hot springs, amazing natural wanders such as Stanley Chasm, Uluru and Kata Tjuta that make the NT a definite must see. Through exploring the NT what was the most surprising and memorable place? For us Uluru was definitely the most memorable place in the NT, I guess we weren’t too surprised as we had seen so many amazing photos and heard great things. However seeing Uluru up close and personal was a whole different story, it’s something that you just have to see for yourself to really appreciate just how amazing it is. Did you choose to climb Uluru? We chose not to climb out of respect for the Anangu people who are the traditional landowners. We walked around the base, watched the sunrise and sunset, it was absolutely magical and something that we will never forget.

What have you found you can’t travel without? We love taking photos so our camera and Drone are definitely something that we would struggle without. Also, our phones as they keep us in touch with our loved ones, especially our nieces and nephews who we would video call on a weekly basis. Do you have a 101 travelling tips you have learned along the way that you wish someone had told you when you first jetted off? We wish that we had explored the North West and NT at the start of the peak season, instead, we chose to avoid the crowds and go towards the end of the peak /start of the wet season and we really felt the heat. Unfortunately, we do not have aircon in Kunu which meant that it was quite uncomfortable at times. What place is now at the top of your bucket list? We still have the East Coast of Australia to explore and we would also love to spend some time travelling New Zealand.

KIMO ESTATE FROM ILLEGITIMATE FRENCH ROYALTY TO LEGITIMATE AUSTRALIAN ROYALTY THE HISTORY OF KIMO IS A FASCINATING TALE David Ferguson / Owner

Kimo (Ky-mo) Estate is our family 7000 acre sheep and cattle farm. We started with the notion of reconnecting our city friends back to the land that produces their food, we felt like there was an ever widening gap and that not only harms our farming business but also doesn’t help our city friends who are losing touch with an intrinsic part of human food history. The idea was born to bring people out of the city, to turn off their phones and devices and simply be in this beautiful Australian landscape. Hear the cockatoos nesting in the trees in the evening, smell the petrichor after a thunderstorm, hear the rain on a tin roof. All those lovely things that we take for granted. The huts were designed by Anthony Hunt Designs and Luke Stanley Architects and are designed to be completely off-grid but maintain a luxurious level of comfort. Built with sustainable timbers, it’s designed to mirror the shapes of the 150-yearold farm buildings in shape and textures. The huts are designed to age and grey off and rust on purpose once again, mirroring the old buildings on the property that have stood the test of time. Over the coming years, we will be adding to the current (we have 2 cute little cottages and a set of shearers quarters) accommodation with the historic homestead to be turned into a boutique hotel which will act as a centrepiece of the whole estate. Guests will be able to use the pool and tennis court, have a cocktail on the lawn. We also have plans for a micro brewery, other commercials, workshop and even art spaces in the coming years. www.kimoestate.com | @kimoestate

Tallow and Tide is one of our beautiful stocklisters who stocks an array of conscious products and brands. Who is Tallow and Tide? Tallow and Tide really is just an extension of myself. I love beautiful things that enhance my life, but I refuse to let my love of fashion and lifestyle hurt the world. I worked in fashion for 8 years before I opened my store and honestly by the end I was hurt to my core about the waste from big companies that have the resources and means to be better. So I thought I could do better. And here we are! 4 years in and still selling amazing ethical, sustainable and Australian products for the conscious consumer.

Tell us about your curated ethical and sustainable store and the process in selecting all these beautiful pieces? We started out being purely Vintage, which on a whole is the best and most sustainable way to shop. So we still have Vintage and our repurposed Levis are a staple for any wardrobe! Then everything must check a few boxes, I will always ask what fabrics are used, where and how they are made and if they as a brand consider themselves conscious and how so. From that, I can garner whether they fit the bill or not. Lots of brands say they are sustainable but don’t really understand what that means, so I’m always talking and listening. We will have just launched Tallow and Tide the Label by the time this goes to print, a small capsule range of plant-based fabric clothing for those fashion loving conscious hearts. WILL & BEAR In just three years, Will & Bear founders Lauren Williams and Alexander Knorr have built a sustainable hat empire from the back seat of their Volkswagen T3 Syncro van. Following the label’s Australian launch in 2016, Will & Bear has experienced tripledigit sales growth year-on-year, and has amassed an impressive 120 retailers globally. The label’s success lies in its innovative, digital-first business model, which allows Lauren and Alexander to live their dream life from the road while running a multi-milliondollar business. “From the beginning, we looked to develop a decentralized business structure, one that allowed us to continue travelling without compromising the growth of the business,” explains Will & Bear cofounder Alexander Knorr.

The bones of Will & Bear’s progressive business structure is formed by a small but nimble global team of contractors who are outsourced to provide key functions like production and warehousing, digital marketing, PR and wholesale.

Initiating an ongoing partnership with trees. org in 2016, Will & Bear has successfully planted over 100 hectares of trees across West Africa, sequestering over 900 tons of carbon from the atmosphere, counteracting the effects of povertyinduced soil degradation and providing financial independence for hundreds of local farmers.

While the team works autonomously from across the globe, Lauren and Alexander are left to run the day-to-day of the business from the Australian road in their beloved Volkswagen van.

The label ethically produces its hats in Inner Mongolia, Sri Lanka & PRC using a combination of 100% Australian wool and woolen offcuts otherwise discarded by the fashion industry.

The idea to build a hat brand was formed when Lauren and Alexander abandoned their bourgeoning careers in mortgage brokering and product design engineering, touting clients including Adidas (multinational

“Living from a van while travelling across Australia and running a growing business is hard work,” explains Lauren Williams, one half of the sustainably and ethically produced Australian hat label, Will & Bear. Williams conceived the idea for Will & Bear with her partner Alexander Knorr in 2016 while travelling through Tasmania on holiday. Designed to act as a conduit between the natural environment both Lauren and Alex love so much, and men and women’s wardrobes globally, Will & Bear crafts sustainably produced, timeless hats inspired by the Australian landscape. After restructuring the business to accommodate their wanderlust, Lauren and Alex decided to uproot from their Byron Bay home in late 2018 and hit the open road for the entirety of 2019. “We found the perfect Volkswagon T3 Syncro van on gumtree and I spent five months completely restoring the inside to include the creature comforts we needed for a year on the road,” says Alex. “We wanted to be sure the inside of the van had enough space for us to live, that it was designed in a way for us to have visitors join us on the road, and also to double as our make-shift office.” Through clever use of space and thoughtful design, the couple has built a perfectly equipped home on wheels for themselves and the business. Homely touches are obvious in the form of dried flower bouquets, trinkets and crystals from the couple’s travels, and a scattering of cushions and artisan-made candles.

Hand-built by Alex, the kitchen is demountable and can be used indoors or outdoors, while the fold-out desk installed off the back of the van is used as the Will & Bear office. “There are certainly challenges and breakdowns associated with living on the road, but having the freedom to go at your own pace and see the beauty of our incredible country is so rewarding,� says Lauren. EIGHT Eight is a local Australian label that prides itself on creating clothes that flatter a range of body shapes and sizes. Whose clothes are feminine, sexy and flattering and are designed to celebrate female curves. Eight seeks to be a slow fashion label and produce only a select number of designs in limited quantities each season (oh and they will only ever use sustainable materials in everything they make!) We took to the time to learn about the founder of Eight and her mission for her new brand and this is what she had to say. My name is Supriya and I’m the founder of Eight. I previously co-founded a made to measure denim business, where I was surprised to see so many women like myself that have bolder curves that also struggle with finding off the rack clothes that fit well. For as long as I can remember, my thighs have always been a size bigger than my waist and as a result, I pretty much gave up on ever shopping for shorts, because almost everything I tried would make my legs look like sausages. I also have bigger boobs, which means things like wrap tops and tie tops were completely unattainable. I wanted this line to cater to women like me that struggle with fit. I wanted a line of clothing that not only fit curves but that celebrated them and made women feel good in their own skin. As sustainability is very important to you, how do you implement it in your life cycle? We’re a simple brand that cares about important things: Sustainable production: All Eight products are made using sustainable or biodegradable materials. We will always be 100% transparent about the materials that we’ve used in any of our clothing. Slow fashion: We are firmly anti-fast-fashion and only offer a curated selection of products with a maximum of 4 new seasons on offer in a calendar year. Ethical production: We conduct physical site visits at our manufacturing facilities to ensure that workers have a safe, clean and friendly work environment in which to create our beautiful designs What would be your most favourable design from your summer collection? We recently launched the first collection in December 2019, with a select range of summer tops and bottoms designed to celebrate female curves and create flattering silhouettes. Our summer collection is flirty and sexy and bright and most importantly, designed to fit well. Our summer short has been our most popular product to date - the shorts are specifically cut to flatter women that have bigger hips, thighs or booty (or anyone looking to create that perfect hourglass figure!). Our products are available in sizes AU6 - AU20 and suit women across multiple body shapes - boobs, butts and all!

Tell us about your mission and what you want your clothing to achieve? More than anything else, we want women to feel good in our clothes. We want to empower their body shape and embrace their femininity. Eight seeks to promote diversity of all kinds within our label and we want to cultivate a community of women of all shapes, sizes and skin tones that feel accepted and celebrated as they are.

Jupiters Heart Shape up your summer wardrobe with some sustainable swimmers The label Jupiters heart was created by Victoria Giagkoulas in the laid back city of Adelaide, South Australia and was established in 2018.

The idea was born from a passion for discovery and self-expression through the medium of Art. The creation of art helps to express a multitude of elements, from the emotional to statements of character. Each expression has a different translation or resonance with any person.

Jupiters Heart will achieve these goals by supporting the sustainability movement in the fashion industry.The label minimises waste by using their implemented reuse and recycle method, whilst also searching for new, consciously innovated materials.

At Jupiters Heart, the belief is ‘fashion is an extension of art.’ From the intricate designs of an individual pattern to the complexity of complementary colours/shades. Art and fashion are one in the same. The method Jupiters Heart undertakes to create a garment shares the same components of expression which is displayed through their processes. Developing the initial idea/ the ‘motive’, designing the pattern, selecting the material and completing the piece with the final details. The label is currently focusing on women’s swimwear, but will soon branch into women’s clothing and accessories. Jupiters Heart’s vision is to stay unique, to continue to launch clothing and swimwear that not only makes people look good but feel good too. Fashion helps reflect who we are, who we have been and who we aspire to be. The labels main priority is to become a carbon-neutral business by ensuring that

ECONYL fabric is a nylon yarn transformed from synthetic waste including industrial plastic, excess fabrics and fishing nets from our oceans. Later that year they began their next plan of action to ‘say goodbye to plastic and hello to eco-friendly postal bags’. TWO SOLES. THE LABEL

The design of shoes has varied enormously through time and from culture to culture, with appearance originally being tied to function. Inspired by the warm, calm sea-side lifestyle of the Eastern Coast of Australia, two soles. is a contemporary shoe label designed by two podiatrists. We took the time to get to know Anna and Claire (the Founders of two soles.) who became experts in the footwear industry, before deep-diving into business together. Hand-crafted for souls who embrace a carefree and healthy lifestyle, the brand’s mission is simple: to create sandals that not only look good but will support the feet and keep them comfortable no matter what adventure unfolds.’ For this reason, each and every single pair of two soles. have been designed thoughtfully with a supportive footbed to style you effortlessly from morning to sundown, and every step in between. How was two soles. the label created? Two soles. was founded in the summer of 2018 by podiatrists and footwear designers Anna Young and Claire Murray on the East Coast of Australia. They became close friends in high school and had a shared dream of creating a healthy, balanced lifestyle they truly love. They were inspired to design footwear that would enhance women’s lives rather than make them more complicated. They wanted to create shoes not only for them and how they live their lives, but for their friends, colleagues, sisters, aunts, and daughters, for how they live their lives too. They believe that good shoes shouldn’t be a maze, or take precious energy away from where you really want to spend it - on your travels, in the sand, with your friends and chasing after your littlies.

With this philosophy, Anna and Claire invested years studying podiatry and becoming experts in the footwear industry, before deep-diving into business together. Tell us about how your product helps reduce waste, through slow fashion? For us, taking a sustainable approach to business is a no brainer. Not only do we aim to do this by establishing sustainable processes, but also, by ensuring that everything we do, from design choices to packaging is purposeful and environmentally conscious; having the least impact on our beautiful planet.

MINIMALISM THE BEST CHOICE OF STYLE

Consumers are becoming more aware of what they are buying, living in the phase of “Marie Kondo”, it’s now about quality and purposeful purchases, rather than fast fashion choices. Being a new business, we are so lucky as we have been able to establish our label with this in the foreground. Some of the things we are proud of achieving towards the slow fashion movement are:

1. We are a small business. This means we only make small orders for all our styles so they are not sitting on shelves, or being discounted to move bulk stock. Our orders match what our community is asking for. Finding a boutique factory to support this was not easy, but it was a necessity for us. It allows for two soles. to be part of the slow fashion movement. 2. We pride ourselves on creating quality products. All of our designs are handcrafted by artisans with many years of experience. Saltee Society Liv is the owner of Saltee Society, who swears salt water runs through her veins, sun shines from her hair and sand is inbuilt into her bedding. Saltee Society was grown by the sea in the humble suburbs of the Southern Gold Coast, Australia, by a girl, inspired by her friends, family and the seaside lifestyle that they’re forever chasing. Introduction to what is hemp? Hemp is a cultivar of the Cannabis plant and is generally known as Industrial Hemp. Hemp can make a large range of products and is a fast-growing plant.

You can grow hemp for Fibre which you make clothing, paper, building materials, bioplastics, ropes or Seed which can then be pressed into food products such as hemp seed oil, protein etc or the flower which you can extract Cannabidiol (CBD). Depending on what you are growing hemp for will determine the different seed types, as well as the way you grow hemp in your region. What is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana? They are both from the Cannabis family. The main difference is the THC content in the ‘flower’ THC is the compound that has psychotropic or euphoric effects on the user. Hemp has ‘Low THC’ generally 0.3% and won’t cause any psychotropic feeling.

Marijuana (high THC) is typically used today for recreational and medicinal purposes. Hemp is mainly used for Industrial purposes (Fibre and Seed) and now also for its medicinal properties. What are Cannabinoids? There are many chemical compounds which have different characteristics of Hemp or Marijuana plant. Cannabinoids are the chemical which gives the plant it’s medicinal and or recreational properties.

There are as many as 113 different cannabinoids in the Marijuana plant. The most common that people know are THC and CBD which interact with different receptors in our bodies and in turn, can produce a wide range of effects. Humans and most animals have an endocannabinoid System. The endocannabinoid system is a system in the human body consisting of cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids bind to cannabinoid receptors and can change how the cells function which in turn will lead to different effects in the body. The effect, in general, is to help the body to regulate normal bodily function. Misconceptions Hemp will get you high! Well, actually quite the opposite. Because of the low THC in hemp, there is no chance of this happening.

Would this affect my pet if they ate a hemp plant? Some animals will eat hemp, but this is only because of the nutritional value the plant presents. Hemp Seed Oil and CBD oil are NOT the same things. Hemp seed oil is extracted by a cold-press process using only hemp seeds and is a very healthy dietary supplement rich in Omega 3 and 6 Essential fatty acids and Vitamin E. CBD oil is part of the resin extracted from the flowers of the hemp plant, which can contain Cannabidiol (CBD).

How did your Organic Hemp farming come to be, what it is today? We wanted to have a circular focus on every aspect of our supply chain so we decided that we would start to grow this highly beneficial plant - industrial hemp. Not only is it a low CO2 crop it has the ability to accelerate carbon sequestration in the soil, doesn’t require the use of pesticides and herbicides and to top it off our hemp farm is located with views over Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay and Mount Chincogan all icons of our region. It was important for us to try and provide ethical consumption and causerelated purchasing to our customer base that also supported Hemp production for the future. What are some of the common misconceptions about Hemp? That you can get high from Hemp! Sorry to say you won't be able to get high from hemp, but it will get you healthy!

TORA Tora is a 4-piece electronic band originating from Byron Bay, Australia, compiled of multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, producers, designers, visual artists, engineers and performers with a wide creative palette.

For those who don’t know TORA, who is TORA and how did the name come about? TORA is Jo, Jai, Thorne, and Shaun. We are a four piece band made up of producers / Instrumentalists from Byron Bay, Australia. The name TORA just came along in a conversation and we liked it so we rolled with it. For those with an interest in origin, the word Tora, means ‘now’ in Greek, and ultimately resonates to the core of everything we do. While this project’s main output is music, it has evolved into something much more and serves as an endless opportunity to explore, learn and grow. What is your creative process? The creative process never rests...its constant. Almost any given moment in a day has the potential for an idea to come along. For me, (Jo) lot of the time the conception of an idea happens when I am not at an instrument, and then it will just float around in my head for a few days, or weeks, or years...When it comes to actually recording, we generally set up our gear in a lounge room for a month or two and work day and night, each taking turns and layering up the ideas we are working on. Eventually, when no one has anything to change, we call the songs complete and then we set them free into the world. Some songs sit around for years and others are finished in a matter of days, there’s no single formula for how it happens, each song comes along differently. What is your life outside of music? We each have different interests which span across many fields such as: fashion, philosophy, science, visual art, graphic design, futurism, travel & event sports among many other things. We don’t limit

ourselves to any particular interests, we all run our own businesses on the side and have a hunger for a new experience. What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? Do it for the love of it, not for the money. As soon as money becomes the reason for making songs, the beauty of the creative process will be tainted and the joy of making music will be lost. Follow your heart, and your gut and don’t let anyone try to force you to compromise your inner voice. People want to hear the truth, so listen to your feelings and project them honestly.

Wow, there’s a lot to choose from, so many great shows over the years, but the most memorable show that comes to mind for me right now was Falls Festival on NYE a few years ago, we were placed at a really great time and we had a massive crowd who were making us feel very welcome the whole time.

What message do you hope your audience can gain from your music? We hope that people can feel a sincere authenticity in our music, and we hope that they feel present in the moment while they listen. The message differs from song to song, but overall we hope people can feel a raw truth in the sound and the lyrics.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be? I think the mentality in some parts of the industry is that music is a product more than it is art. Sometimes it becomes too much about the money, and so people are forced to change their music to fit inside the box. I would love to see more labels and managers giving their artists the creative freedom that they deserve, it would make for better songs on the radio and an overall more inspiring industry for the artists and the listeners. Who inspires your fashion/style? I’m not sure if we are inspired by any particular

person or brand, we each just wear what we feel good in. Lastest Tour Tora is currently on the first leg of their Tour, starting here in Austraila and than jet-setting off to Europe. They describe this as ‘ one of the most intense year of touring they have ever done, most of which isn’t announced yet’. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, hopeless and powerless when you look at the rampant devastation to our natural environment happening all around the world, and the dramatic changes in weather patterns, from droughts to hurricanes, that we are already experiencing. The fires and flooding that have resulted, apocalyptic in their scale and destructive power, and which are causing the loss of millions of acres of forests, large-scale loss of biodiversity and entire species to be wiped out (as well as the loss of many human lives!) is confirmation that the effects of climate change are already well and truly here. 2050, the point in time that global emissions need to approach net-zero for the world to limit the worst impacts of climate change, is also fast approaching. But if you want to do something about what’s happening, you absolutely can. And one of the best places to start is with what you put on your plate. Change your food shop and you can change the world! Becoming more aware of how the food choices you make impact yourself, other people, your community and the planet, is essential if we want to try to steer our planet away from ever increasing environmental catastrophe’s like the ones we have witnessed this year. It’s become abundantly clear that our global food system needs a radical rethink. Industrial, intensive farming and food processing is a major contributor to global warming and is causing tremendous devastation and suffering to humans, animals, and our natural environment. Forests are being destroyed for farmland and populations of wild creatures like bees, butterflies and birds are being killed by toxic synthetic pesticides. It’s harming human health in a myriad of subtle

ways too, with some life-threatening chronic diseases being linked to toxic chemicals in our food, along with widespread pollution of our oceans and destruction of our soils. My approach is all about eating in a way that is more sustainable for the planet. A balanced approach that encourages more ethical farming, fishing and food production and regenerative agriculture (mainly smallscale and organic), that helps restore soils and biodiversity but that is also sustainable for your individual health. People often ask me if I think the answer to averting climate catastrophe is in us all turning vegan, or vegetarian, and my answer is that it’s not that black or white. Now, to be totally clear, there is absolutely no doubt, from an environmental perspective, that we need to cut back dramatically on our meat and animal product consumption! To meet the growing demand for meat globally, farmers continue to burn and cut down forests to expand pastures. In many parts of the world, ‘grass-fed’ beef simply means they cleared the forest to enable them to graze livestock there and produce the beef. If a farmer in Brazil cuts down rainforest to produce beef, it won’t matter if the cattle graze on the land in a responsible way, because the loss of the trees is significantly worse for the environment. On many meat and dairy farms, it would be better, from an environmental perspective, to replant the land with trees.

You can help make a difference for the future of tomorrow. In the vegan diet, there are also huge environmental issues with industrially grown soya and grain production - crops that require high inputs of fertiliser, pesticides, and herbicides. From a health perspective too, not everyone seems to be equally suited to a vegan or vegetarian diet. What works for you food-wise will depend on many factors including your ancestors’ diet, your health, your environment, and many other variables. We are all different in this sense. Some people do seem to thrive, so if you are someone who is already eating a vegan diet and you are eating in a balanced way and monitoring your nutrient intake and health status (including getting annual blood checks) and you are feeling good, then great! However, I have personally come across some vegans who are experiencing health issues stemming from nutritional deficiencies that are a direct result of their diet, so it’s important to be aware of this (some signs to look out for include low immunity, feeling lethargic and weak, low libido, feeling depressed, crumbling nails and periods that have stopped). That said, many people do really well on vegetarian diets and many other people, who do seem to need a bit more animal protein, could definitely still thrive on a diet composed of far less animal products than they are currently eating!

Meat production can only really be environmentally friendly and efficient if it is done in a way that helps restore nutrients and carbon to the soil, brings wildlife and restores biodiversity to the land and if cattle are fed and cared for in a way that reduces their methane emissions. This also involves having smaller herds on larger plots of grassland and using land that’s not suitable for food crop production (like natural grasslands here traditionally, large native herbivores would have roamed and been an important part of the ecosystem). Here are some ways YOU can help make a difference: Find out what is sustainable to eat where you live (because this will differ from country to country). For example, some countries have more native grasslands not suitable for food crop production where some sustainable meat production can take place, some fish are sustainable to eat, in small quantities when caught using sustainable methods, in some parts of the world where fish stocks are healthy and not in others. www.zoepalmerwright.com | @zoepalmerwright

Eat more organic food Eat more mindfully - slowly, consciously and enjoying every single bite - so you don’t overeat and so you are able to stay connected to how certain foods are really making you feel. Eat far fewer animal products and only choose highquality animal products that are ethically sourced the key consideration must be where the livestock was farmed and the environmental and welfare standards of where it was produced.

• Eat more vegetarian meals - learn how to cook delicious plant-based recipes. • Eat more locally grown and produced foods by shopping at local food markets is a great place to start. • Read food labels and educate yourself about what things on labels really mean. • Eat more natural, plant-sourced whole foodsvegetables and fruits, nuts, legumes, and ancient and pseudo grains and only eat animal-sourced food that has been produced sustainably in low greenhouse gas emission systems.

Serves 4

Combine the oats, seeds, nuts, coconut flakes, date syrup, pulp of 1 passion fruit and lucuma powder in a bowl.

2 cups (170g) porridge oats 1 tbsp chia seeds 1 tbsp sunflower seeds 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds 1⁄4 cup (30g) cashew nuts 1⁄4 cup (20g) coconut flakes (or desiccated coconut) 2 tsp date syrup (or 2 pitted dates) 5 passion fruit 2 tsp lucuma powder 1 cup (240ml) nut milk (coconut or almond) 1 cup (240ml) water Juice of 1⁄2 lime 1 apple To garnish: A dollop of sheep’s or coconut yoghurt

Add the coconut milk, water and lime juice and mix together. Cover bowl and leave the ingredients to soak (or “activate”) overnight in the fridge. The next morning grate the apple into the mixture and stir. For a looser consistency, add more coconut milk. Enjoy a portion of the mixture and served with a generous dollop of either coconut or sheep’s yoghurt, a drizzle of date syrup and the contents of 1 passion fruit. The remaining mixture can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days.

KAPPI We’re Fred and Em, husband and wife, co-conspirators, partners in crime and founders of Kappi. Our vision is to End Plastic Pollution. The ABC’s War on Waste helped us realise the true scale of Australia’s waste epidemic and the devastating effect our mindless consumption of single-use plastics was having on our natural environment. Tell us about your earth-friendly products and how do they help reduce waste? HOME & THINGS How do you apply sustainable design to each of your design projects?

I would have to say over 50% of our home decor has been thrifted. And the majority of those pieces have been upcycled. A lot of pockets in our home are filled with large pots and urns, which I have thrifted, and filled with dried floral arrangements which have been sourced from our own backyard and local surroundings.

Ever wondered how to create a beautiful interior space without breaking the bank. We got speaking to Ali Jacks founder of Home and Things and talked all things interior and how she creates these beautiful spaces through thrifting, pre-loved items and a bit of TLC. Tell us about home and things and how it came to be? Whilst I had always had a love for home decor and interior design, I didn’t really delve into it until I finished up work when I was heavily pregnant with my second son (who is now 18 months old). I have a busy mind and find it hard to do nothing. So, once I did stop working, I found myself deeply emerged in DIY projects and renovating both our own and my dad’s place....as my partner likes to call it... turbo nesting. I was taking picture after picture of each and every project. I decided to document the progress on Instagram. (Little did I know this would soon open up to a world of like-minded creative turbo nesters like myself). The handle name @home_and_things isn’t the most creative name however it is all my heavily pregnant baby brain could muster at the time. I did plan on changing it down the track however for some reason I just never did... and now it has stuck.

How do you integrate your thrifting into your home renovations? Oh, that’s a tough one. Whilst I do love everything to look aesthetically appealing, it has to be equally functional as we are a family with two young boys, 5 years old & 18 months. I still can’t have any decor on ground level (like plants) in certain areas of the house as little fingers tend to find their way to the dirt.... then the walls. Our home is a 1940s Californian bungalow style, so we did want to keep some of the period features of our home when we began renovating. I have always loved vintage pieces or anything that needs a little TLC. I find beauty in things that a lot wouldn’t even take a second look at. The majority of our ticket items in our home have been thrifted (including 3 x lounge suites) from markets, op shops, Facebook marketplace or gumtree. I scored an immaculate 3-piece cane lounge suite from an op shop for $140. There wasn’t a scratch or mark on it and the cushions were in perfect condition. All it needed was a little freshen up with some DIY covers.

Is there any interior design style you favour? I would have to say that I do lean towards a bohemian style with an eclectic twist with a nod to Scandi. Tell us about one of your latest D.I.Y projects? I would have to say my favourite DIY project would be the Moroccan style ottoman hack using two x Kmart bathmats. As we are renovating a lot of money was being pumped into the bones of the home so there was little left to spend on actual decor itself. I am a huge fan of Moroccan style decor and had always had my eye on a couple of ottomans, they were just so darn expensive.

When Kmart released the Diamond Jacquard Bathmat, I knew there was something that could be done to transform it into something that would be so much more than just a gorgeous bathmat. A lightbulb moment! A couple of bathmats, some yarn, a packing needle, 2 x European pillows and a lot of elbow grease later... and there you have it.

Muditā Ceramics Muditā Ceramics was created by Bree-anne Jeffrey after leaving university to teach ceramics in her beautiful Sunshine Coast Studio. Muditā means vicarious or sympathetic joy and Bree wanted her ceramics to reflect that. Bree expressed that “growing up there was always this cup of tea with my mother or a friend during a joyful or difficult time and I wanted to pay homage to the fact that people all over the world gather around ceramics daily to share these moments. I want to encourage people to share joyful and meaningful moments over meals or a cup of tea”. Bree uses her ceramics as a reflection of her personality and

her upbringing. Some are full of colour, bright and happy and some are more earthy, reminding her and us of the beautiful earth that we stem from. Bree ceramics journey started with her late partner gifting her a birthday card with money to do a pottery class. She enrolled in a pottery course and started the course just after her partner passed away. “I threw myself into art in my old farm shed and studied a diploma and bachelor in visual arts. I then left uni to create Syndicate Creative where I teach pottery workshops and courses. I wanted people to have the opportunity to learn pottery in a relaxed, open and affordable place”.

Bree has now moved into a warehouse studio again where she shares this space with 3 other creative women. Joining forces with one of the women, Samia from Oh Honey Florals and opening a store called Club Creative (one of our beautiful stocklists) at the front of their warehouse. Here one side is a florist and nursery and the other side a beautiful artisan store. Bree wanted to open a space where local artisans could stock their work without having to have a hot and sweaty market stall. “Let’s be honest, the market life isn’t the most glamorous way of getting your products out there. My artisan store represents all the small makers who are hustling to create sustainable goods rather than mass produced items. How Did SunButter come to be? SunButter Suncare is the brainchild of marine biologist couple and wildlife guides Tom Hiney and Sacha Guggenheimer. From a human perspective, it’s important to use physical sunscreens over chemical ones because physical sunscreens literally form a barrier on your skin, rather than being absorbed into your system and causing unknown damage and irritation. SunButter is made using a very simple formula of natural ingredients, in which non-nano particle zinc oxide is the only active (UVA- and UVB-blocking) ingredient. The other ingredients — coconut oil, vitamin E and castor oil — are included to moisturise the skin and help with spreadability. Due to the natural ingredients used, SunButter is perfect for children and those with sensitive skin. It’s also SPF50 and four hours water-resistant. More and more research is emerging all the time to indicate the harm caused by chemicals in our oceans and waterways. From coral bleaching and coral destruction to the harsh effects on dolphin calves in utero, the 10,000 tonnes of sunscreen chemicals that end up in our water each year are 10,000 tonnes that don’t need to be there. There are plenty of “natural” or “reef safe” sunscreens on the market, but often these products include nanosized zinc (which is small enough to be ingested by coral) and a whole list of other additives that the Haereticus Environmental Laboratory (HEL) has labelled as potentially harmful to our water-dwelling friends. 1 MAGAZINE = 1/2 A DAY OF EDUCATION An important part of creating this magazine was knowing that it wasn’t adding more rubbish to this world, so we wanted to ensure that the printer we chose shared the same values. With this in mind, we found a printer that enables our magazine to be printed on eco paper with eco ink. Another important attribute was having the opportunity to support a nonprofit. Here through our beautiful printer who is partnered with CARE Australia, we were able to make this happen. Through each print, a percentage of funds are donated to support a project run by CARE Australia, in Cambodia. These Projects support girls from ethnic minorities through primary school. They also have projects in Nepal and Tanzania with two separate grassroots organisations. One funds skills training for women and the other provides education scholarships for girls in primary and high school. Previously they have also funded projects in Sierra Leone and Uganda, focusing on small business training and scholarships for girls in primary and high school. Each print run measures our impact on ‘Education days’, so for every purchase, our printers let us know exactly how many days are helping to fund each project. Our Printers work closely with their charity partners to work out exactly (as close as possible) what an education day costs for each specific project, factoring in everything that is needed: school fees, uniforms, books, sanitary products, transport, etc. They do this because its more powerful than using a percentage of profits, as the impact is very tangible for customers and clients. So every time you and a friend buy a magazine, you fund one day of education.
