California Art Club

Celebrates the Golden State’s Rich Artistic Legacy with its 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum

he California Art Club presents the Bowers Museum from JulyT its 17 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition to August 21, marking the first time at that these two organizations have collaborated to display one of the nation ’ s most anticipated annual showcases of contemporary-traditional art. The exhibition spotlights nearly 250 original paintings and sculptures, created by many of the nation ’ s foremost representational artists as well as today ’ s young emerging talent. Subject matter ranges from plein air landscapes, seascapes and urban scenes, to

The Annual Gold Medal Exhibitions are curated to emphasize the finest examples of artworks that are grounded on the time-honored skills that were utilized by the pioneering artists who founded the organization in 1909. Many of those early artists

Brittany Ryan, Midwest Mermaid, were also active with the

To encourage exhibiting artists to create their most important works, the Annual Gold Medal Exhibition is unthemed, providing creative freedom. As a result, the exhibition presents a revealing exploration of topics relating to the global community, ranging from environmental preservation to social interests and cultural perspectives. “We are greatly honored to be presenting the

111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum under the leadership of Museum President Dr. Peter C. Keller. As the California Art Club strives to represent and serve people of all cultures, it is fitting that we partner with the Bowers Museum whose vision is to ‘ celebrate world cultures through their arts, ’” says Elaine Adams, the Executive Director and CEO of the California Art Club.

Michael Obermeyer, CAC President and a prominent Orange Countybased artist, adds,

“Visitors to this year ' s Gold Medal Exhibition are in for a special treat. They can view exceptional works created by current California Art Club artists, as well as paintings by many of the club’ s founding members, which are part of the Bowers ’ permanent collection and displayed in a separate gallery. ”

The featured artwork in the 111th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition was juried by a panel of art scholars and artists, and encompasses both classical compositions as well as unexpected interpretations. As a result, the myriad of representational works on view allows viewers to both reconnect with memories they cherish and discover intriguing aspects of daily life in communities near and far.

The 187 exhibiting artists include renowned painters Peter Adams, Brian Blood, Warren Chang, Karl Dempwolf, Michael Godfrey, Jean LeGassick, Jennifer Moses, Ray Roberts, Mian Situ, William Stout, and Joseph Todorovitch, as well as sculptors Béla Bácsi, Ish Ordaz, Adam Matano, and Christopher Slatoff. Some of the notable local artists are John Cosby, Rick J. Delanty, Lani Emanuel, Robin Hall, Jeff Horn, Calvin Liang, Michael Obermeyer, Brittany Ryan, Anthony Salvo, Jeff Sewell, Kevin Short, Michael Situ, and Wendy Wirth. A full slate of educational programs is being offered during the exhibition, allowing art enthusiasts to meet the participating artists and learn more about traditional art forms. The programs include “Meet the Artists ” spotlight talks every Saturday, a simultaneous figurative demonstration with both a painter and sculptor, an artistpanel discussion on the topic of “Elements and Extremes in Plein Air Painting, ” and a “Paint/Sculpt-Out” with live models in explorer costumes on closing day. Specific program information, including ticket information, is posted at bowers.org/gold. All artwork is available for acquisition and a portion of the proceeds benefit the California Art Club’ s educational programming.
