This week we focused on the function of the members in our volumetric details though a class discussion. We then undertook a site visit on campus to observe the construction progress of the Oval Pavilion. Oval Pavilion site visit Main components
Steel I beams supporting roof structure
Secondary timber stud framework Specific components of site visit
Steel Z purlins as secondary roof support: light, easy to install with corrosion-resistant zinc coating.
Steel frame: while expensive, enables precise and fast construction (Ching, 2008) Steel window mullions
Laminated timber columns supporting steel I-beams used for aesthetic purposes with similar strength properties to steel.
Concrete steps at entrance of pavilion.
Timber formwork maintains shape of concrete while it sets Reinforcement mesh provides tensile strength to concrete, lessening the likelihood of cracks forming (Metalcorp, 2011).

Off-form concrete finished wall beside main external stairs
Aesthetic design created by nailing Oregon finish to formwork and pouring the concrete against it. After around 2 weeks the wall is stripped. Chimney/breezeway
External steel frame
Tongue-and-groove timber lining
Loose insulation to fill wall cavities
Secondary timber stud framework
Waterproof sheeting to prevent entrance of moisture Tongue-and-groove chimney/fireplace lining
Stained Laminated Veneer Lumber external fireplace/chimney wall adds to aesthetic appeal of building.
Thin timber slats are connected to one another via tongue-andgroove. This simple connection is tight fitting, aesthetically pleasing and has enough surface area for adhesives (Woodworkbasics, 2013 – 2013).
