by
Alan Ayckbourn
Cast includes Ignatius Anthony, Amanda Haberland, Clare Humphrey, Gina Isaac, Ben Livingstone, David Tarkenter
Have you ever been to a party and wished you hadn’t? Desperately devoted wife Diana invites old friends round for tea to try and cheer up recently bereaved Colin. But Colin seems quite happy with his memories whilst the cracks are beginning to show in those around him. Tea and sympathy turns into trauma as his friends reveal themselves to be shopaholics, hypochondriacs and serial adulterers in this brilliantly cutting comedy of embarrassment. “nice to sit with your friends now and again, nice” says Marge. Acclaimed by the Sunday Times as “Mr Ayckbourn’s finest play” it does what he does best - holds up a mirror to everyday life and makes us laugh at what we see. Early booking is recommended.

DANCING AT LUGHNASA 31 May – 16 Jun | £9.50 - £21
by
Brian Friel
Director Janice Dunn In the Summer of 1936, in rural County Donegal, seven-year old Michael lives with his mother, her four sisters and their older brother Jack, a missionary priest returned from Africa. Life is simple, making ends meet is hard, but when the sisters acquire their first wireless radio, what dreams do they dare to dream? The Mundy sisters laugh, cry and dance as the dusk sets on the life they know and lost loves and opportunities blow away forever. This magical, moving, memory story is filled with dark humour and tenderness. It is a vital, life-affirming play about ambition, happiness and love. Janice Dunn (A View From the Bridge) directs the Mercury Theatre Company in Brian Friel’s Olivier and Tony Award-winning play which premiered in 1990 and has been produced in the West End and on Broadway. LIZA GODDARD & DANIEL CASEY
NOËL COWARD’S STAR QUALITY in
Adapted by Christopher Luscombe Directed by Joe Harmston “A brilliant adaptation” Sunday Times
Mon 13 – Sat 18 Feb £10.50 - £22.50 Liza Goddard and Daniel Casey star in Noël Coward’s final play. Set in 1951, Star Quality takes us behind the scenes of a new West End production. Behind the red-curtain glamour, Coward conjures up a wickedly observant satire of talent and treachery and a gallery of unforgettable characters. A mercurial leading lady and her director engage in a battle of egos which will make or break the production – and possibly the rest of the cast.

star quality
Bursting with Coward charm, what emerges from the mayhem of wit, hissy fits and fisticuffs is proof that Star Quality will always triumph. Stars of TV and Stage Liza Goddard (Take Three Girls) and Daniel Casey (MidSomer Murders) lead a superb cast of 12 including West End legend Gay Soper (Sunday in the Park with George), Sarah Berger, Simon Cole, Anthony Houghton, Keith Myers, Brendan Riding, Bob Saul, Sonia Saville and Lola the dog, in her professional stage debut. Adapted by Christopher Luscombe (director of The Madness of George III and The History Boys) and directed by Joe Harmston (Artistic Director of the Agatha Christie Theatre Company), Star Quality is a fitting farewell from Noël Coward, one of the most distinctive voices of British theatre. WITHERING LOOKS By Peter Gordon
LipService - Britain’s favourite literary lunatics, present their cult Brontë spoof. The classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rain-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss this chance to share in the silliness too! Withering Looks takes an “authentic” look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters – well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat. Withering Looks has won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics Award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. “Cancel all other engagements for the glorious LipService” The Independent “It’s a joy… very, very funny” The Guardian “This award-winning show remains one of the most popular plays in the repertoire of a company whose comedy theatre style has seldom been bettered” The Guardian “The Laurel and Hardy of literary deconstruction” The Independent

An all star cast is set to be named for this gloriously funny comedy. Ida, Lucille and Doris are part of a club – the cemetery club. Every month they meet at Ida’s New York house for tea then trundle off to the cemetery to remember the good times and gossip with their late husbands. Lucille fancies herself as a flamboyant swinger, Doris is a traditional matronly widow and Ida is somewhere in between. When Sam, a butcher, meets the widows at the cemetery while he is visiting his wife’s grave he changes their lives for ever. This touching play about three superannuated, feuding Jewish women is funny, wise and gloriously witty - Steel Magnolias meets The Golden Girls.
A truly remarkable and sparkling piece of theatre which celebrates an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history – the Women’s Land Army of World War II. This delightful and often deeply touching play charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort. Based on hundreds of letters from and interviews with the original Land Girls, along with songs from the period, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny, wonderfully moving and utterly captivating portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest, unsung heroes. Simply unmissable, this is theatre at its most memorable.
