reason

Business Insights, the global blinds and shades market is projected to grow from $6.12 billion in 2022 to $8.76 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 5.27% in the forecast period, 2022-2029.

There are many reasons for the rising demand, and according to Future Market Insights, innovative energysaving features in blinds and shades are drawing in more customers. Moreover, this is expected to significantly support the concept of smart buildings coupled with distributed energy systems. Growing consumer awareness of customizing product solutions offered by various manufacturers in the blind and shades market is also one of the reasons fueling the growth of the global blinds and shades market.

Smart Shade Controls

There are various types of smart shade controls offered by different manufacturers. The most popular way to operate smart shades will be via Apps. There are dedicated Apps from the maker designed specifically for a given smart shade. In other instances, the smart shade may function with one or more of the popular smart home ecosystems, including Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Amazon Alexa.

Smart Displays like the Google Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max can provide touch control for smart shades, though the controls might only be able to open and close the shades in the most basic of ways. Smart shades frequently use Works with Google integrations to connect to Google smart displays. Integrations with Amazon Echo Show displays might also be feasible. Smart speakers are built into smart displays, allowing voice commands to be used with them as well.

The feature of Voice Control with Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, or Google Assistant may indeed be an option for a given smart shade, but enabling that functionality may require an add-on smart speaker or smart home hub.

Many smart shade makers offer a companion Wireless

Remote Control option. These can be convenient when you want to operate an individual shade without having to locate your smartphone or try to recall a specific voice command. They can be snapped to the wall or sit on a coffee table for easy access. These may communicate with the smart shade via radio frequency (RF), Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or other wireless communication protocols. Another option for some brands of smart shades is In-Wall Lighting and Control Systems. These smart lighting controls can be equipped with optional colour LCD touch-screen displays to control smart shades and other devices in addition to replacing standard lighting wall switches.

Whole-Home Automation Systems are another option that are expensive systems, which system integrators can install, and can integrate motorized and smart shades. They have dedicated on-wall touch panels, remote controls, and mobile device controls.

Smart Home Scenes can also be used to control groups of smart shades. In this case, scenes have been set up to operate all the shades in the house with a single tap, or even just one room at a time. A lockdown scene has been set up to lock all of the doors and secure the smart door locks in addition to simultaneously closing all of the shades.

Smart Home Scenes By tapping a button in an app, scenes allow multiple smart shades to be controlled simultaneously. These scenes can be combined to control other smart home accessories connected to the same network, like smart door locks or smart lighting, and they are simple to set up. Typically, voice control can also be used to run scenes.

Smart Home Ecosystem Integration

The new Matter Standard may change everything over time, but today the compatibility of smart shades between the Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings ecosystems is very mixed.

DECEMBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 9

Advantages of Shades and Blinds

Light Control, and Comfort.

Whether your goal is to maximize or minimize daylighting, reduce glare, or simply stay comfortable, smart shades can make it easy to automatically control the amount of light coming into your windows to meet the needs of the moment. This modulation can happen many times throughout the day and can be tailored on an individual window or group of windows basis. You may want all of your shades to open at sunrise and close at sunset, or have them open or close at different times during the day based on their orientation to the sun, time of day, and depth of overhangs. Most shades are made from llight-filtering fabrics and can be adjusted by voice control to bring in softened daylight. They are each powered by 8 AA batteries, housed in wands hidden behind the shade housings.

Solar Heat Gain and Loss + Energy Savings.

Automations on a schedule can help minimize solar heat gain through your windows on hot days by closing the shades (to reduce cooling loads), or maximizing solar heat gain on cold days by opening them (to reduce heating loads). These hands-off automations can help save on energy costs throughout the year.

Now that we have understood the technical part we give you the option to select the right type of shades

Types of Smart Shade Designs.

Smart shade types and designs can be as varied as the windows they are intended to cover.

Roller Shades. Roller shades are the most universal of all smart shades, and nearly every manufacturer will offer them in their product line-ups. Mechanically, these are the simplest of all motorized shades and generally

16 I SMARTHOME WORLD I DECEMBER 2022 A-OK COVER STORY

require the least amount of lift force from the motor— meaning the batteries tend to last longer. Their cost tends to be at the lower end of the smart shade range. Layered Shades. Among the newest designs are smart layered shades (often called banded shades or zebra shades), where the shade consists of two layers or fabric with alternating bands of sheer and opaque material. They tend to be at the higher end of the cost range, and can be the most dramatic to watch as they raise, lower, or adjust.

Sheer Shades. Also among the newer designs are smart sheer shades (often called soft blinds), all-fabric shades that have two layers of fabric connected by fabric vanes. They function more like Venetian blinds, and also tend to be at the higher end of the cost range.

Cellular Shades. Cellular shades (also known as honeycomb shades) are also offered by many smart shade manufacturers, and these are generally in the middle of the cost range. They typically offer more energy savings than other designs due to the air trapped inside the cellular vanes.

Venetian Blinds. There are many smart Venetian blinds on the market to choose from. Due to the nature of their design, they tend to be heavier and require

more lift force than other designs—so typically the lift operation is not motorized. Instead, the motorization and automation are restricted to tilting the vanes for light control. These shades can be made of aluminum, vinyl, wood, or other materials. Cost tends to be at the lower to middle segments of the range.

Types of Smart Shade Power Options.

Smart shade motorization requires continual access to electrical power. While many smart shades will be powered via batteries, shades operate via wireless connections. Plug-in Power Adapters is also a viable option, particularly where you plan on installing a large number of shades throughout the home. Hard Wiring can be installed on dedicated in-wall control boxes and power supplies in strategic locations. This will enable you to invisibly hide all wires in the walls. Solar Panels are offered by Some manufacturers. In this case, a small solar panel positioned near the shade is used to keep the batteries recharged. This may be a good option where the window location receives sufficient sunlight to fully recharge the batteries each day.

Now that we have cleared all your doubts and provided our readers with the latest updates we are sure you are confident to make the right choice.

What is an Amplifier?

An amplifier is an electronic device that increases the strength of an audio signal. It is an essential component of any sound system, as it allows the speakers to produce louder and clearer sound. They are used to amplify a wide range of audio signals, including music, movies, and other media. Amplifiers are usually paired with speakers, and they can be used in a variety of settings, including homes, cars, and professional sound systems. The type of amplifier you choose will depend on your specific needs and the components of your sound system. It is important to select an amplifier that is powerful enough to drive your speakers and has the connectivity and control features you need.

Amplifiers come in a variety of types, including Solid State, Tube, Class D, and Digital, each with its own unique features. Solid-state Amplifiers use transistors to amplify audio signals, while Tube amplifiers use vacuum tubes to achieve the same result. Class D Amplifiers are a newer type that use high-frequency switching to amplify the audio signal, making them more efficient and compact than traditional Amplifiers. Digital Amplifiers use digital processing to amplify audio signals, allowing for precise control and a wide range of features. It’s important to consider the type of Amplifier or AVR that will best suit your needs and the specific components of your sound system. Factors such as power output, connectivity options, and control features should all be taken into consideration when making your decision.

What is an AV Receiver?

An Audio Video Receiver (AVR) is an electronic device that combines the functions of an amplifier and a tuner. It is used to power and controls a home theater system, and it is responsible for amplifying audio signals from various sources, such as a television, DVD player, or streaming device. AVRs also have built-in tuners that allow you to receive and playback audio and video signals from various sources, such as over-the-air broadcasts, cable, or satellite. In addition to amplifying and tuning audio and video signals, AVRs also provide a range of features, such as surround sound processing, connectivity options for various devices, and control options for adjusting the audio and video settings of your home theater system.

AVRs are an important component of a home theater system, as they provide the power and control needed to produce high-quality audio and video. They are designed to work with a variety of audio and video sources, and they offer a range of connectivity options, such as HDMI, Bluetooth, and USB. Some AVRs also come with built-in streaming capabilities, allowing you to access online content

without the need for a separate streaming device. AVRs come in a variety of sizes and power ratings, so it’s important to choose one that is compatible with the components of your home theater system and meets your specific needs. AVRs can make a significant difference in the overall performance and enjoyment of your home theater setup.

Amplifiers VS AVRs

Amplifiers amplify audio signals and are used to drive speakers.

AVRs combine the functions of an amplifier and a tuner and are used to power and control home theater systems.

Amplifiers are typically simpler in design and only amplify audio signals, while AVRs provide a range of features, such as surround sound processing, connectivity options, and control options.

Amplifiers are used in a variety of settings, including homes, cars, and professional sound systems, while AVRs are primarily used in home theater systems.

Amplifiers come in a variety of types, including solid state, tube, class D, and digital, while AVRs may use any of these types of amplifiers.

Amplifiers are typically paired with speakers, while AVRs are paired with a range of audio and video components in a home theater system.

How do Amplifiers/AVRs affect sound quality?

Amplifiers and AV receivers (AVRs) play a key role in determining the overall sound quality of a home theater or audio system. One of the main ways that amplifiers/AVRs affect sound quality is through the amount of distortion they introduce to the signal. Distortion refers to any unwanted changes to the original signal, such as adding noise or altering the waveform. High levels of distortion can make the sound harsh and unpleasant to listen to, while low levels of distortion result in a more natural and accurate sound. Amplifiers/AVRs also affect the linearity of the sound, which refers to how accurately the amplifier/AVR reproduces the original signal. A linear amplifier/AVR will accurately reproduce the full range of the signal, while a non-linear amplifier/ AVR may introduce distortion or other changes to the signal. Good sound quality, therefore, requires a low level of distortion and good linearity, which can be achieved through the use of high-quality amplifiers/AVRs.

Different Types of Amplifiers Classes

Amplifiers are classified according to the way in which they amplify an audio signal. These classifications, typically denoted by a letter or two, include Class A, A/B, D, G, and H. The class of an amplifier refers to the portion of the output signal that varies within the amplifier circuit over one cycle of operation when excited by a sinusoidal input signal. In consumer home audio, the most commonly used amplifier classes are Class A, Class AB, Class D, Class G, and Class H. Each class has its own unique characteristics and is suitable for different applications.

Class A amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that operates in a continuous mode, meaning that the transistors are always on and conducting current. This results in low distortion and excellent linearity but also results in lower power efficiency compared to other amplifier classes. Examples of Class A amplifiers include single-ended tube amplifiers and some high-end solid-state amplifiers. Class A amplifiers are often preferred for their sound quality and are commonly used in audiophile systems and high-end home theater systems. However, their lower power efficiency means that they can generate a lot of heat and may require larger and more expensive power supplies.

Class B amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that operates in a push-pull mode, meaning that the transistors are only conducting current for half of the input signal cycle. This results in higher power efficiency compared to Class A amplifiers but also results in higher distortion and less linearity. Examples of Class B amplifiers include some lowpower solid-state amplifiers and some older vacuum tube amplifiers. Class B amplifiers are often used in applications where power efficiency is important, such as in portable devices or in power amplifiers for PA systems. However, the higher distortion and less linearity of Class B amplifiers can negatively impact sound quality, making them less desirable for use in audiophile systems.

Class A/B amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that combines the characteristics of Class A and Class B amplifiers. These amplifiers operate in a push-pull mode like Class B amplifiers, but with the transistors conducting current for more than half of the input signal cycle. This results in lower distortion and better linearity compared to Class B amplifiers, but with a lower power efficiency compared to Class A amplifiers. Examples of Class A/B amplifiers include many common power amplifiers for home theater

systems and car audio systems. Class A/B amplifiers are a good compromise between the sound quality of Class A amplifiers and the power efficiency of Class B amplifiers, making them a popular choice for a wide range of applications.

Class D amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that uses pulse width modulation (PWM) to encode the input signal into a series of pulses. These pulses are then used to switch power transistors On and Off at a high frequency, resulting in a highly efficient amplifier that can produce high power outputs. Examples of Class D amplifiers include many modern solid-state amplifiers, particularly those used in portable devices and car audio systems. Class D amplifiers are known for their high-power efficiency, which allows them to produce a lot of power with minimal heat generation. However, the high-frequency switching used in Class D amplifiers can result in some high-frequency noise, which can be mitigated through the use of filtering circuits.

Class G amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that uses multiple power supply voltages in order to improve efficiency. These amplifiers operate in a similar manner to Class B amplifiers, but with the ability to switch between multiple supply voltages depending on the input signal level. This allows the amplifier to use a lower supply voltage for lower signal levels, resulting in improved power efficiency. Examples of Class G amplifiers include some highpower solid-state amplifiers used in professional audio and home theater systems. Class G amplifiers offer a good compromise between the power efficiency of Class B amplifiers and the low distortion of Class A amplifiers, making them a popular choice for a wide range of applications.

Class H amplifiers are a type of electronic amplifier that uses multiple power supply voltages in order to improve efficiency. These amplifiers operate in a similar manner to Class G amplifiers, but with the ability to continuously adjust the supply voltage based on the input signal level. This allows the amplifier to use a lower supply voltage for lower signal levels, resulting in improved power efficiency. Examples of Class H amplifiers include some highpower solid state amplifiers used in professional audio and home theater systems. Class H amplifiers offer improved power efficiency compared to other amplifier classes, but can be more complex to design and may require additional components such as voltage regulators.

When selecting an Amplifier or AV receiver (AVR) for your home theater or audio system, one important factor is the power output of the Amplifier/AVR, which should be matched to the sensitivity and power handling capabilities of the speakers, as well as the size of the room. Another factor to consider is the number of channels, which determines how many speakers the Amplifier/AVR can power. For surround sound systems, it is important to have an amplifier/AVR with enough channels to power all of the speakers in the system. Connectivity is also an important factor, as you will want to ensure that the amplifier/AVR has the appropriate inputs and outputs for your sources and speakers.

Another tip for selecting the right amplifier/AVR is to consider the type of amplifier technology that is used. As mentioned earlier, there are several different types of amplifiers, including Class A, Class B, Class A/B, Class D, Class G, and Class H. Each type has its own characteristics and trade-offs in terms of sound quality, power efficiency, and other factors.

For example, Class A amplifiers tend to have low distortion and excellent linearity but are less power efficient. Class D amplifiers, on the other hand, have high power efficiency but may introduce some high-

frequency noise. By considering the type of amplifier technology, you can better understand the pros and cons of different amplifiers/AVRs and make a more informed decision about which one is right for your system.

In addition to considering power output, a number of channels, connectivity, and amplifier technology, it is also important to think about the overall size and layout of your home theater or audio system when selecting an amplifier/AVR. If you have a large room or a complex setup with multiple speakers and sources, you may need a more powerful and feature-rich Amplifier/AVR to accommodate your needs. It is also important to consider the size of the amplifier/AVR itself, as you will want to make sure it will fit in the space you have available and that it is compatible with your other equipment.

If you have a high-resolution audio system, you may want an amplifier/AVR with high-resolution audio decoding capabilities. By considering any additional features or capabilities that you may want, you can ensure that you choose an amplifier/AVR that is well-suited to your needs and provides all of the functionality you desire.

What is Daisy Chain Networking and how does it work?

Daisy chain is used to direct the connection of network nodes and nodes of the computer. It is a typical type of network topology. Varied topology supports objectives, and is persistent, fault-tolerant, and user-friendly. It is also simple to implement. Some hardware can be connected to a computing system in a Daisy Chain network by associating each component to another similar component, instead of directly connecting to the computing system that uses the component.

NETGEAR M4250 Ethernet Switches in a Home Theater
INTERVIEW
NETGEAR M4250

What are the steps to deploy an AV network?

Installation is simplified when the HD video transmitter and receiver can be powered over Ethernet as well. A standard PoE-compliant network switch can distribute the video signals and power any transmitter or receiver unit connected to the switch. This greatly reduces the time required for installation and potentially avoids the use of expensive electricians for running additional power outlets. A PoE-based solution also provides improved reliability since low-cost external power supplies are proven to be the first thing that fails in most AV installations. The MediaCento IPX enables easy out-of-the-box installation with the optional use of an adjustable channel selector. A technician can easily deploy a network of MediaCento IPX devices using just a screwdriver to select a matching pair of addresses; the devices will automatically find each other to establish a connection. More advanced users still have the option to manually configure all the IP settings if desired.

What do Wi-Fi 6 and 6E mean for the Smart Home industry?

Life without the internet seems impossible in today’s times. In the last couple of years, home Internet needs have increased dramatically. Increased usage of the home network for work from home, remote learning and more caused peak traffic to surge compared to pre-pandemic levels. As the need for speed and capacity shows no signs of slowing, Wi-Fi 6E brings a unique advantage to households looking for better, faster, more reliable Wi-Fi.

The main differentiator between 6E and the Wi-Fi 6 standard is 6E’s expansion into the new, previously unavailable 6GHz band. The 6GHz Wi-Fi band adds more than double the bandwidth of 5GHz, resolving issues with interference and congestion in the 5GHz Wi-Fi band and enables multi-Gigabit speed for connected Wi-Fi 6E devices. Wi-Fi 6E essentially opens up a brand-new superhighway limited to the fastest and latest devices.

Today’s typical home has more than 20 devices connected to its in-home network, including a whole

38 I SMARTHOME WORLD I DECEMBER 2022 INTERVIEW

host of so-called smart devices such as vacuum cleaners, lights and security cameras in addition to PCs and cell phones. This constitutes a lot of traffic on your network and just like a traffic jam on a freeway; it can cause some major frustration. With Wi-Fi 6E, newer devices can take advantage of the new, clean, super fast 6GHz band while freeing up the 5Ghz and 2.4GHz bands so older devices can also experience a bump in performance.

Nowadays, many Wi-Fi 6E-enabled devices are already available in the market today with many more to come, including Samsung GS21 Ultra 5G smartphone, Samsung Neo QLED 8K TV, Dell LATITUDE 5520, Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 2, Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX210 (Gig+) Module. It is very likely the next phone, TV, tablet or PC you buy will be Wi-Fi 6E compatible.

How does 5G benefit IoT?

Virtual networks: The main advantages of the 5G are a greater speed in the transmissions, lower latency and therefore greater capacity for remote execution, a greater number of connected devices, and the possibility of implementing virtual networks (network slicing), providing more adjusted connectivity to concrete needs.

Greater speed in transmissions: Speed in transmissions can approach 15 or 20 Gbps. By being able to enjoy a higher speed we can access files, programs, and remote applications directly and without waiting. By intensifying the use of the cloud, all devices (mobile phones, computers, etc.) will depend less on internal memory and the accumulation of data and it won’t be necessary to install a large number of processors on some objects because computing can be done on the Cloud.

Lower latency: Latency is the time that elapses since we give an order on our device until the action occurs. In 5G the latency will be ten times less than in 4G, being able to perform remote actions in realtime.

Greater number of connected devices: With 5G the number of devices that can be connected to the network increases greatly, it will go to a millionaire scale per square kilometre.

Network slicing: The 5G also allows the implementation of virtual networks (network slicing), and the creation of subnets, to provide connectivity more adjusted to specific needs.

Smart Water Management Systems

Anupam V Joshi, the Founder and Managing Director of WAE Limited writes on IoT-based Smart Water Quality Monitoring.

The convergence of the Internet of Things, (IoT), Big Data, and AI Technologies form the foundation of IoT-based Smart Water Quality Monitoring. This technology aids in both the prevention of water problems and the repair of harm caused by the careless use of water resources.

To monitor, control, and maintain the quality of water resources as well as the accompanying machinery like pipelines and pumps, smart water management necessitates the integration of systems and a complex of procedures.

The benefit of the IoT is that it improves the management of the entire water supply chain, from freshwater reservoirs to wastewater collection and recycling, by bringing transparency.

This comprises Internet of Things (IoT) devices for managing water, as well as systems and software tools

that help to optimising the production, distribution, and consumption of water, as well as techniques for Smart Water Treatment.

In Smart Water Management, there are various IoT sensors utilised, namelyUltrasonic Sensors: The sensors measure distance by using ultrasonic waves. The sensor head emits an ultrasonic wave and receives the wave reflected back from the target.

Flow Sensors: A component that measures the flow of a fluid such as a gas or liquid, flow sensors utilize both mechanical and electrical subsystems to measure changes in the fluid physical attributes and calculate its flow.

Temperature Sensors: These sensors are used to measure the temperature of hot and cold water dispensing out of the nozzle

TDS Sensors: A TDS sensor measures the conductivity of the solution and estimates the TDS from that reading. Pressure, Tanks Status Flow Sensors: A flow sensor is a component that measures the flow of a fluid such as a gas or liquid.

RO Status Sensors: RO Status sensors utilize both mechanical and electrical subsystems to measure changes in the fluid physical attributes and calculate its flow. Key Technology Elements and Functionalities. It works by using sensors and microcontrollers mounted on pumps or pipelines to continuously monitor water flow, level, temperature, and quality. Additionally, message warnings and data from the sensors are forwarded to a cloud server over the Internet, where they are processed, sometimes with the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and then sent to a computer for user consultation. The system may then manage and regulate the use of water resources, as well as their quality, and make it easier to maintain the standard machinery.

Areas of Applications

This smart solution can be used to decrease the massive amounts of water waste produced by industries, agriculture, and the creation of electricity. Precision farming, real-time water metering, smart irrigation, agricultural water management, and other Internet of Things applications are examples of hightech techniques that could be used.

Enhancing the quality of the water and guarding against contamination from chemical waste or organic pollution like acidification. Companies employ sensors and IoT technologies for real-time

water monitoring and control in order to enhance and maintain the quality of the water.

Boost the effectiveness of water infrastructure such as water reservoirs, distribution pipes, treatment facilities, and wastewater recycling facilities. By utilizing IoT and data solutions for asset management, businesses can integrate predictive maintenance with breakage prevention and equipment downtime, and preserve critical measurements like water pressure, temperature, flow, etc. close at hand.

Using Smart Water Management tools with leak and moisture sensors to implement leakage control. The cost of repairing the harm caused by leaking is high. Leakage control is therefore crucial to maintaining the security of water resources and the control of budgets. By determining the pressure of the water flow and its rate of change at different sites, IoT waterflow sensors can accurately determine the presence of leakages. Therefore, installing a full Internet of Things-based smart water system can do away with the requirement for ongoing inspections of the building’s pipeline.

Use IoT-based water management systems to practice monitoring water consumption. It aids in maximizing and maintaining the appropriate use of water resources at various scales, including those of families, communities, nations, and even the entire planet.

Installation of a comprehensive IoT-based water system solution in catering and restaurant organizations to replace conventional boilers with smart heaters and coolers to save energy. The positive cold compressor of the restaurant’s cooling system has great potential for heat recovery, which might result in annual energy savings of thousands of kilowatts.

When the water temperature falls below the prescribed 140 degrees Fahrenheit to a range between 77- and 108-degrees Fahrenheit, the disinfectants disperse owing to prolonged inactivity in the pipes, which causes the growth of such bacteria. By determining

which parts of the pipelines are passive and dormant for extended periods of time, real-time analysis of the placement of IoT water-based sensors is a useful way to stop the growth of such bacteria.

In order to help commercial and residential buildings get the highly sought-after LEED and WELL certifications. The sustainability of the building is the primary concern in the former, whereas the residents’ overall health is the primary concern in the latter. Building owners, regardless of whether their structure is new or old, can achieve the necessary water-quality standards to receive the LEED and WELL certifications by installing an IoT-based smart water system.

Ultimate Audio Experience with the McIntosh MC451

The McIntosh MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier is a stateof-the-art solution for bi-amping a loudspeaker. It features Hybrid Drive™ technology, which combines a Vacuum Tube Amplifier and a Solid State Amplifier into a single chassis in order to achieve exceptional sound performance. While the McIntosh MC901 also uses this technology, the MC451 has a more traditional form factor and size, making it easier to integrate into home audio systems, racks, and furniture. By adding a pair of MC451s to your stereo system, you can expect your speakers to perform at an unparalleled level.

The MC451 consists of a 150-Watt Vacuum Tube Amplifier and a 300-Watt Solid State Amplifier, providing ample power for driving virtually any speaker. The Vacuum Tube Amplifier drives the midranges and tweeters of the speaker, while the Solid State Amplifier drives the woofers. The 150-Watt vacuum tube amplifier is powered by four KT88 output tubes, two 12AT7 tubes, and one 12AX7A tube, and utilizes a Unity Coupling Circuit output transformer to deliver its full 150 Watts to speakers with 2, 4, or 8 Ohm impedance.

Similarly, the 300-Watt Solid State Amplifier is capable of delivering its full 300 Watts to speakers with 2, 4, or 8 Ohm impedance thanks to McIntosh Autoformer™ Technology.

The MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier has been designed to

DECEMBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 51 PRODUCT IN SPOTLIGHT

work together in a synergistic relationship, with each amplifier amplifying only its intended frequencies. This is made possible by the use of a large, quiet toroidal transformer, which generates sufficient power to ensure that neither amplifier impairs the performance of the other. As a result, bi-amping speakers with the MC451 is easy and delivers exceptional sound reproduction.

Gone are the days of fiddling with two separate Amplifiers, an external crossover, and trial and error in order to properly configure them. The MC451 offers an internal, adjustable crossover that allows you to tailor the output frequency range of each Amplifier section to the attached loudspeaker. Simply set the CROSSOVER POINT knob on the back of the MC451 to the loudspeaker’s crossover point, and frequencies below the crossover point will be sent to the Solid State Amplifier, while frequencies above it will be sent to the Vacuum Tube Amplifier.

This adjustable crossover enables you to optimize the performance of both Amplifier sections to your speaker’s specifications and your listening preferences. The gain levels for the Vacuum Tube Amplifier can be adjusted from -6dB to +3dB, and a direct feed can be connected to each Amplifier section, bypassing the internal crossover.

The MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier is equipped with the McIntosh DualView™ Power Output Meter. This innovative meter features two traditional, fastresponding mechanical meters stacked above and below each other in a single window. One meter is dedicated to the 150-Watt vacuum tube Amplifier, while the other is dedicated to the 300-Watt solid state amplifier. Each meter operates independently and displays the real-time power reading of its respective

amplifier section. This allows you to easily monitor the power output of both amplifier sections in real-time.

The MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier comes with a range of additional McIntosh Amplifier technologies:

• Power Guard®, which monitors and adjusts the input signal in the 300-Watt Solid State amplifier section in real time, in order to prevent harsh distortion and potential speaker damage from clipping.

• Power Guard Screen Grid Sensor® (SGS) for the 150-Watt vacuum tube Amplifier section, which helps prevent premature vacuum tube failure by monitoring screen grid current in the KT88 output vacuum tubes. If the current becomes too high, a circuit in Power Guard SGS is activated to dynamically attenuate the input signal in real time, keeping the vacuum tubes operating at safe levels.

• Sentry Monitor™, which observes output current and shuts the Amplifier Off if it exceeds safe limits.

• Power Control, which allows you to send power on/ off signals to other connected McIntosh components for easy system power up and shutdown.

• Gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts for secure attachment of speaker cables.

• A McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsink™, which is connected to advanced high current output transistors to efficiently cool the Solid State amplifier section.

• A Power Management System that turns the entire unit off after a set amount of time when no input signal has been detected.

The MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier boasts a flawless fit and finish that embodies the distinctive McIntosh design aesthetic. The front panel features a signature black glass faceplate with three clear windows that allow you to view the vacuum tubes, the DualView meter, and two rotary control knobs. The faceplate also includes an illuminated logo and lettering, as well as built-in aluminum handles. The top of the Amplifier is adorned with glass inserts that display block diagrams outlining the circuitry and specifications of the unit. All of these design elements are set against a stainless-steel chassis that has been polished to a mirror finish.

The MC451 can be paired with a variety of preamplifiers, turntables, CD players, media streamers, speakers, and other specialty products to create a complete home audio system tailored for bi-amping loudspeakers.

The HT-A3000 is a 3.1-channel bar with a 3.1 sound bar with left, centre, and right channels, plus built-in dual subwoofers. It takes advantage of Sony’s 360 spatial sound mapping and sound field optimisation technologies, which basically customise the sound for your specific living room using microphones and create “phantom” speakers based on the environment’s acoustic profile. The bar comes with immersive Dolby Atmos sound and includes support for Chromecast, AirPlay 2, Spotify

Connect, and Bluetooth audio playback.

The HT-A5000, which is 5.1.2 sound bar sports three discrete drivers for left, centre, and right channel duty, two up-firing speakers for height effects, and two bass drivers. The HT-A5000 supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersive audio formats as well as hi-res audio and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio. The HTA5000 is a step above the A3000 and both new sound bars join the HT-A7000 which is a 7.1.2 system and costs Rs 179,980 in the market.

The Sony HT-A5000 starts at Rs 1,11,980 and the HT-A3000 retails for Rs 83,980. The price includes an additional wireless sub-woofer (SASW5/SA-SW3) consumers can pair with the soundbar.

The Completed Z-Wave Source Code Project is Now Accessible to Members

The Z-Wave Alliance has declared that the Z-Wave Source Code Project is complete, and will be opening up Z-Wave development and allowing members to contribute code to determine the protocol’s future under the guidance of the new OS Work Group (OSWG). The project’s objective is to offer a comprehensive development environment with the pertinent source code and sample applications to individuals looking to directly contribute to the evolution of the Z-Wave standard. It has been published and made available to Alliance members on GitHub.

A new required Silicon & Stack Certification procedure will also regulate the quality and interoperability of goods using Z-Wave Source Code. Z-Wave S2 security, network connectivity, range, battery life, and interoperability, including backward and forward compatibility, will all continue to be tested for and certified by full Z-Wave certification.

“The Z-Wave Alliance is deeply committed to the global smart home market,” said Mitch Klein, executive director of the Z-Wave Alliance. “This year, the smart home conversations have focused largely on Matter. Shiny and new, and with big brands supporting the initiative, Matter is bringing a lot of attention to the smart home. This makes it easy to overlook Z-Wave as the most established, trusted, and secure smart home protocol, which also happens to have the largest certified interoperable ecosystem in the market. We firmly expect that Z-Wave will play a key role in connecting devices and delivering the experience users really want.”

While the Source Code project was ongoing, Z-Wave experienced growth achieving milestones such as the availability of Z-Wave Long Range (LR) certification, surpassing 4,100 certified Z-Wave devices on the market, and seeing 90 million new Z-Wave devices enter the market since 2020.

In 2020, when Z-Wave Alliance announced that Silicon Labs was contributing the Z-Wave code to

the organisation, the Alliance was re-incorporated as an independently run, member-driven non-profit Standards Development Organisation (SDO). Over the last 20 months, technical working groups specific to features such as the physical layer working group (mac/ PHY), networking layer working group, application layer working group (command class specification), and security working group have collaborated to complete the Z-Wave Source Code project.

Executed in beta testing and shared with members of the Z-Wave Member Summit, Exegin Technologies completed the Z-Wave Source Code porting to thirdparty silicon. The operation is Outlined in a blog on the Z-Wave Alliance website. The proof-of-concept network demonstrates how the Z-Wave Source Code package will provide developers and manufacturers with flexible implementations from the controller (hub/bridge) to end devices.

Further extrapolated, the implementation could be for both new controllers, such as Z-Wave/Matter compatible bridges, and for Z-Wave or Z-Wave/Matter end devices.

Silicon Labs, one of the primary code contributors to both Matter and Z-Wave, has developed a multi-protocol software development kit, the Unify SDK, for Matterbased hubs and bridges. The software tool provides for interoperability between the different wireless IoT protocols, including Z-Wave and Matter. The Unify SDK offers a how-to kit for manufacturers and developers to connect both new and legacy Z-Wave devices with new Matter devices.

Klein added: “This is going to be an incredible year for the smart home industry and an exciting time for verticals we see growing including MDU, hospitality, energy and insurance. As an SDO. Membership is the key to the future of Z-Wave technology. With a new Board of Directors, led by Amazon’s Jonathan Adams and John Osborne II who chaired Project CHIP, the industry will start to recognise and embrace all the shiny parts of Z-Wave.”
