KNX Standard: Versatile, Compatible and Secured

Smart Home World gives you a holistic view of KNX standard, its advantages, software providers, and KNXcertified brands in India.

When you think of Smart Homes, does your mind immediately visualize cutting-edge technologies and futuristic solutions? If so, then you might be surprised to learn that Smart Homes have actually been around for 30 years – in the form of the KNX system. For those few who are not well-versed, KNX is a technical standard that enables you to connect any number of different devices to create a tailored Smart Home solution.

Giving an overview of the KNX systems’ history and its growth, Bhavesh Doshi, KNX Tutor and CEO, Entelechy Systems says, “KNX was conceptualised in Europe in early 90’s and since last three decades it has evolved as the worldwide standard for home and building controls. It is truly a global standard. KNX brings many advantages to the user/owner/designers and specifiers due to its vast ecosystem, created over these years. There are more than 500 manufacturer members in 45 countries, and more than 8,000 certified KNX devices are available. KNX devices are being installed in more than 190 countries, with 1 lakh partners/integrators in 175 countries. 161 scientific partners doing research in 36 countries. These allow multiple options for all stakeholders in a project to select and install a system that is cost-effective, secure, scalable, sustainable, and connected. KNX has created a benchmark for a smart home system which is Global, Secure, and Connected.”

Market Size and Growth Drivers

According to Straits Research, KNX Product Market Size is projected to reach USD 50 Billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 15.9 percent. The global KNX product market size was valued at USD 13 billion in 2021. It is estimated to reach an expected value of USD 50 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 15.9% during the forecast period 2022-2030

One of the major reasons demand drivers is people strive for high and modern living standards where they can access electronically connected devices such as television, refrigerators, smartphones, and other electronic devices. The demand for comfort is continually increasing when it comes to controlling air conditioning, lighting, and access control in residential and commercial segments.

Speaking about the raising demand for KNXcertified products Architect Rupesh Baid says, “KNX is widely accepted in India. The rising demand for comfort and versatility in the residential and commercial segment is expected to fuel market expansion in the coming years.”

What makes KNX system so unique and acceptable the world over?

KNX is a globally recognised standard, which offers the widest variety of Smart Home functions. KNX is a network standard, basically OSI-based network communications protocol is based on three technologies: EIB (European Installation Bus), EHS (European Home Systems Protocol), and BatiBUS. This network standard facilitates the integration of Biverse applications from different vendors of smart home and building technology, into one common project. KNX can be used for all possible functions and applications in home and building control ranging from lighting, and shutter control to security, heating, ventilation, air conditioning,

monitoring, alarm, water control, energy management, metering as well as household appliances, audio, and lots more.

The KNX Protocol is widely used in IntesisHome and IntesisBox products. They function very well with smart homes and industrial building automation. The KNX is not constrained by hardware compatibility, a KNX device could be controlled by anything from an 8-bit microcontroller to a PC, based on the level of implementation and application. Speaking about the advantages and the compatibility, Joost Demarest, CFO & CTO of KNX Association adds, “There are numerous advantages to using smart technology in homes and buildings, it increases the comfort of the home and building; the network of smart devices is easily extendable; it improves the energy-efficiency of applications; individual room control: energy heating/cooling/lighting, is only

consumed per room, instead of being regulated at one place for the entire home. It also provides additional advantages, as KNX system is an open system thanks to its international standardization (Europe EN50090, world ISO/IEC 14543-7-1 to 7 and ISO 22510, China GB/T 20965). The KNX system brings proven interoperability between products of different vendors thanks to the sound KNX certification scheme for products relying on third-party test labs. The KNX system brings an application and vendor-independent design and configuration tool, the ETS, which allows one to fully document one’s smart home and building.”

Communications That Support KNX

Twisted pair (Most commonly Implemented, Avg. bit rate: 9.6Kbits/sec)

Radiofrequency Infrared Power line

IP/Ethernet

Typically, KNX network consists of three major sets of components:

• Sensors (e.g. push buttons, temperature, movement-sensors)

• Actuators (e.g. Dimming units, bulb, motors)

• System devices and components (e.g. LineCouplers, Backbone-Couplers)

The devices and components are interconnected in any one of the communication medium (mostly twisted pair) to communicate data between each other to perform the required actions. KNX allows

for ease of extending the network in an already existing setup.

The application program is loaded into the devices with the project design and commissioning software via a system component called interface (serial or USB interface) connected to the PC and the bus. The two-wire installation bus is routed in parallel to the 230 V electrical power supply connects all devices and systems of the household technology together and transmits all the control signals.

KNX systems can be installed at required places and can consist of several KNX subsystems.

It follows a tree topology.

Nodes (N) are assigned to a line (L)

Several lines are connected via a mainline (ML) and form an area (A)

Several areas are connected with each other via the backbone line (BL)

• The basic unit of a KNX TP installation is a line that includes a KNX power supply (including choke), and usually no more than 64 other bus devices.

• Branches could be taken out on bus cable to extend more subsystems.

• No more than three repeaters can be operated in parallel in a line, meaning the maximum number of bus devices is 255.

• Line Couplers could be used to increase the network further, up to 15 lines can be operated via Line Couplers on a line.

Cable Length:

• Distance from power supply to device: max. 350 m

• Distance between any two devices in a line: max. 700 m

• Length of a line segment: max. 1,000 m

• Distance between two power supplies (including choke) in a line: as per manufacturers’ specifications.

Individual Address:

• Every device in a KNX system is assigned a unique, unambiguous number. This consists of three numbers separated by dots. The numbers depend on the position of the bus device in the topology:

• The first number denotes the number of the area

• The second number denotes the number of the line

• The third number is a sequential number indicating the device’s position in the line.

Interoperability and No Central Point of Failure

One of the two most important features that make this system popular the world over are: KNX is interoperability and can even be integrated with other automation systems. This interoperability with open systems and open standards has

increased its popularity and demand amongst professionals in India.

The second most important feature is the `No Central Point Failure’. In a KNX installation, there is no central point of failure so a minor fault will never trigger a system failure. Distributing the intelligence means that the outage will simply impact that single device or component, which can easily be replaced with an alternative from another KNX manufacturer. A quick physical swap on site and some reprogramming in the ETS by the system integrator will see the device up and running again, with no disruption to the rest of the building automation system.

Advantages of KNX:

Decentralized Network Structure

Independent on the platform

Low energy consumption

Open standard

Millions of installed devices

Developed specifically for building automation

Standardized applications assure consistency regardless of vendor

Supported by hundreds of manufacturers

Tree topology appropriate for large networks

Choice of transmission media

Backward compatible with the former European Installation Bus (EIB)

Adapting to New Changes and Technology

According to Straits Research, “Growing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) presents umpteen market opportunities for KNX and is predicted to be the world’s top home automation system, and the connection with IoT will further increase this chance. With IoT technology and the most recent IoT breakthroughs, KNX is expected to generate prospects for KNX IoT manufacturers and system integrators. Due to this potential, KNX manufacturers have increased the application range of KNX products in areas such as energy storage, smart metering, energy management, mobility, renewable energies and smart grids.

The KNX IoT solution will enable the ‘out-of-thebox’ operation of the present KNX ecosystem while allowing for advanced setup and customization to an individual client or operational requirements. KNX installations could be linked using IoT integration by supplying URLs and credentials, such as a login-dependent interface for connecting KNX to third-party systems, on the other hand the KNX IoT Point API provides a possibility to extend a KNX installation with devices communicating on an

COVER

IPv6 network like e.g. Thread or Wifi. For the latter two extensions, KNX manufacturers are already offering the first solutions or developing first solutions compliant to these new specifications.”

The Solutions Developed to Secure Systems

KNX Association developed a robust security solution for wired (using twisted pair (TP) cable), wireless and IP-based installations, in the form of KNX Secure. There are three areas in which KNX Secure is expected to be used. Firstly, KNX installations include wireless radio frequency (RF) communication. Secondly, in buildings where

it is difficult to prevent physical access to the installation (e.g. in public areas of public buildings). And finally, it protects against unwanted access to an installation via IP.

KNX Secure technology is standardised according to EN 50090-3-4, which means that KNX successfully blocks hacker attacks on the digital infrastructure of networked buildings. Moreover, KNX Secure meets the highest encryption standards (according to ISO18033-3, such as AES 128 CCM encryption). KNX Secure has been supported since version 5.5 of the KNX system programming software, ETS, and many KNX Member manufacturers have already launched KNX Secure products.

Wired vs Wireless System

Wireless network is more flexible and adaptable compared to a wired network. Designers and homeowners of large size homes are comfortable using wired systems for their long-term benefits.

Installation Guidelines

KNX-based Home Automation Systems are expected to be installed and commissioned by a

certified KNX Partner. We have come across System Integrators who are executing the KNX projects without any formal training and using Crack/Pirated versions of the KNX configuration tool ETS. This leads to technical issues in projects and unnecessary discomfort to homeowners.

Wired vs Wireless

The customer base of Wired automation is different from the Wireless systems’ customers. Of course, there are a few percentages of customers who switch over to wireless – due to the stage of site construction, budget constraints, temporary or second home, etc. However, most wired automation customers have experienced the stability of wired systems and hence prefer wired.

Nevertheless, GM Modular has introduced an equally brilliant wireless solution for such customers. The best-in-class i-FI PRO range of wireless systems seamlessly handles the need of the budgetconscious and renovation cases where retrofit may be the only answer.

GM Modular has not faced any mentionable challenges for the solution of the wired system in wake of the rise of wireless systems.

Installation Guidelines

As a magnificent standard of Automation – KNX has a wide list of guidelines to follow during design and installation. And GM Modular has been known to do that. All our sites are well discussed with the clients, the design is accurate, and the installation is perfect. DB dressing is one of the key strengths of GM Modular. We also ensure that all our sites are well documented and the file is handed to the customers for safe custody. All SpaceLogic KNX solutions are KNX IP Secure compliant and backed by Schneider Electric’s superlative cybersecurity.

Wired vs Wireless Systems

Adopting Wireless systems in a residential building can be a fair idea but when it comes to office buildings, hotels, critical buildings, data centers small/medium commercial buildings etc. we need to consider a hybrid or Wired solutions for the time being. Most of Wireless solutions use a proprietary protocol. Since no other manufacturer uses the same protocol there is no interoperability between the manufacturers at the field level. Moreover, the Wireless sensors are connected to the Wireless node /repeaters. The failure of one of the node or repeaters will affect multiple communication to the central location. On the other hand, the open platforms are well accepted nowadays with various possibilities of interoperability and integration with different manufacturers’ product and solution and giving full freedom of product selection irrespective of the manufacturer

Installation Guidelines

The Schneider Electric KNX range allows separate buildings to communicate securely via KNX IP secure systems and routers. It uses the highest authentication and encryption standards defined by KNX and is compliant with Schneider Electric world-class cybersecurity guidelines. The SpaceLogic KNX IP Secure product range provides you with a versatile solution to transform each installation into a more secure home or building.

It is safe to say that the SpaceLogic KNX architecture is secure where it needs to be. All the connections between key KNX devices are secured according to the latest KNX and Schneider Electric standards.

Flexible, reliable, and consistent configuration: good system operation is guaranteed by the ETS software, the only tool which allows all the KNX devices to benefit from a powerful and shared configuration method.

The KNX product range is renewed and enriched to meet the new system requirements in the field of building automation. Our KNX system expands with the following categories: (1) Manual Controls (Living Now & Arteor ranges) (2) Controllers - ON/ OFF, Multi-Application Controller, Room Controller Unit (3) Dimming Controllers (DALI, 1-10V, LED) (4) Infrastructure Products – Power Supplies, Line Coupler, IP Router, Voltage Contacts, Cables & Connectors. Legrand has done some interesting projects in the medical and hospitality sector which include AIIMS (West, East & Central) & many renounced commercials like Kalyan Jewellers (East) & Mangalgiri (South).

Wired Vs Wireless

Home automation works by having a network of devices connected, either wired or wireless. Both these systems are meant for specific applications. For example, wired systems can be more reliable/robust

in big installations which requires integration with Building Management systems since they typically use shielded cables and there is no interference from anything to the signals that move in them.

Installation Guideline

KNX is not a DIY system. It requires a KNX licensed System Integrator who takes care of the design of your home automation and the planning of the installation and configuration of devices and the system. System integrators use specialised, manufacturer-independent ETS Software, whereby the manufacturers’ product data is contained in the ETS database. System integrators can use this tool for connecting products from different manufacturers and from different application domains to form a single installation. Our range of products are KNX certified which can be easily installed in the buildings.

Wired vs Wireless Systems

We are rather excited about the increasing popularity of the wireless systems in India, Home Automation has always been a niche industry in India, growing at a snail’s pace, but with the onset of wireless systems, the growth trajectory has picked up, and there is increased awareness about Home Automation, more people have started considering Automation for their Homes, which is good for the industry. There are no challenges because the industry is still in the growth stage and has enormous potential for everyone to grow.

Installation Guidelines

The System Integrator’s in India are well-equipped and trained in their work, with Interra’s unique range of products, Escala Tech has developed many `use case scenarios’ which can add value to the end client. Entelechy Systems

“As a first-generation company with modern ideas and a philosophy of being the best rather than the largest integrators in the automation field, Entelechy Systems constantly strives to create new solutions based on innovative ideas while keeping progress with evolution in global technologies such as KNX in the field of Home and Building Controls, says Bhavesh Doshi, KNX Tutor and CEO, Entelechy Systems.

Wired vs Wireless

With the increasing popularity of wireless systems, it becomes an obvious choice for projects where wiring is not possible or where wiring is already done as per conventional methods as wired systems are only preferred where wiring is possible. Even though wired systems are much more reliable than wireless, lower wiring costs make wireless networks increasingly popular. Configuration of a wireless system is easy, less time consuming and can be done on smart android and apple devices as compared to a wired system which involves programming using laptops. Wireless systems involve comparatively reduced maintenance and installation cost and are easier to operate. KNX was well aware of the development of wireless systems when it launched KNX IoT in 2016, well ahead than most companies.

KNX IoT along with KNX RF (which is well established in Europe as a wireless standard) will penetrate the market at a steady pace, globally. KNX IoT along with new software tool ETS6 , ensures interoperability and seamless integration between KNX wired and wireless products. Market dynamics would change, and so does the systems. Since KNX is flexible/ adaptable it is best suited to meet new control requirements. So there seems to be no threat to KNX systems.

22 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 COVER

Technovo Distribution Pvt Ltd

Sudhir Joshi, Founder and Director at Technovo Distribution Pvt Ltd. Says, “Eelectron is an Italian company that manufactures electronic devices, hardware and software on KNX standard. Eelectron product range addresses building automation, hotel automation and home evolution sectors with a deep focus on complex environment management and experience in integrated solutions. Eelectron products are installed in more than 36,000 hotel rooms, luxury villas, and large residential complexes worldwide.

Wired vs Wireless

Wireless and Wired solutions are completely different solutions targeted at completely different customers and residences. Wireless products are good for small houses and with limited integration and Wired solutions are best for complex integration and bigger solutions. Wireless products lack stability and durability. Wired solutions so far have won the confidence of Integrators and specifiers. However, Wired solutions are important to increase the reach of the home automation industry and an increase in wireless solutions will help wired solutions in the future. Specifiers who are not doing automation currently will start using wireless products because of the price and will eventually graduate to wired solutions for bigger and more complex projects.

Installation Guidelines

My suggestion to integrators will be to focus more on DB dressing and to follow the best standard procedures for installations. I will also suggest Integrators focus more on their programmer`s technical training which will lead to hustle-free installations.

Integration of HVAC systems into any KNX system is a process that includes, or takes into consideration the benefits such as improvement of energy consumption, improvement of the user’s comfort, easy integration, cost-effective solutions, control over the most significant signals, etc. Wired vs Wireless

Wireless systems open up new opportunities for connectivity solutions like Intesis for BMS and home automation systems. Intesis wireless connectivity enables users to create a robust and reliable wireless connection to hard-to-reach locations, where cables are not desirable. We offer Wireless connectivity solutions for HVAC in any Home Automation or Building Automation systems. And our Wireless solutions are equally reliable and accepted by the users.

Installation Guidelines

The overall design and solution will depend on the project. If it is an existing building where some of the devices are already fitted. Or it is a new design/construction and the solution provider has the liberty to consider the latest technology. While considering smart solutions for building, the solution provider has to offer cost-effectiveness and stability of integration. It is important that the complete project requirements and user’s expectations are understood properly and the right solution is offered.

Intesis BMS and Home Automation products are simple and easy to install. They are best considered at the time of designing the facility. Paul Furtak, CEO, NETx Automation Software GmbH says, “NETx Automation 20 years back developed and installed its first software solution for supervision, control, and management for a large commercial facility in Germany using KNX. Since then, we kept evolving our solution to address the current and future trends of modern building systems. Our current software solution, the NETx BMS Platform comes with the ability to connect a KNX project of almost any size to the entire building involving distributed systems. It offers seamless connectivity options to all industry standards including IoT and Cloud solutions. NETx offers tailor-made automation solutions for any type of building project. Another significant advantage of our solution is scalability to unlimited data points. Be it a private home, single office floor, high-rise building, airport, or as large as a smart city the NETx BMS Platform can handle it.

Our product range consists of reliable server systems, shading control systems, visualizations, and energy reporting systems. All products are based on open standards like OPC, KNX, BACnet, Modbus, or SNMP. Multiple interfaces to DALI Lighting, hotel management software, door lock systems, etc. allow a broad application area.

Wired vs Wireless

KNX offers one of the most advanced wireless communication, based on Radio Frequency (RF). Many reputed manufacturers are producing such components. Therefore, KNX is unique that it offers

various communication mediums including wireless, allowing users to even have a hybrid installation of wired and wireless systems leveraging the strength of each. We currently see a trend of using wireless systems in small installations. But KNX continues to grow strongly in mid and enterprise installations due to its obvious strengths and reliability factor. We at NETx are also complementing such projects using KNX, by extending the possibility of realising advanced applications related to supervision, control, and management of the automation system. This is where the future of smart building lies and we are happy to be in that space.

Installation Guidelines

Flexible and scalable solution for the use of different systems and technologies

NETx software offers a wide variety of applications ranging from gateway functionality to BMS functions to visualisation. Via our software, an additional layer of security can be provided to a KNX installation. Our NETx BMS App Secure solution developed exclusively for KNX installers makes integration of KNX installation very simple and fast. So generally following a good ETS structure and having an adequate network infrastructure should be a good starting approach towards implementing our software as a headend control platform. We offer extensive training and documentation to our partners to make the work fast and easy for them. Also, a top-notch and highly responsive tech support function adds to the convenience of using our software.

Loewe Delivers Crystal Clear Sound With The Klang Bar5 Mr Soundbar & Sub5 Sub Woofer

The combination of the Loewe klang sub5 subwoofer and the Loewe klang bar5 mr smart 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Multiroom soundbar creates an avant-garde cinematic experience in your own home. Audiences of all media types may be certain that they will receive the highest quality sound owing to the Dolby Atmos sound that is both crisp and robust, assured by the system’s total output of 800 watts of music.

The native App and comprehensive wireless capabilities support all streaming services and technologies like Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. Connecting to UHD players, set-top boxes, and gaming consoles is a breeze thanks to the three HDMI inputs, 4K upscaling, and 4K pass-through. Loewe’s multiroom platform makes it simple to extend the system by enabling quick and easy connection of additional Loewe klang mr speakers to the existing setup.

Design

The Loewe klang sub5 perfectly complements the Loewe klang bar5 mr. Premium materials and a clear design language make this a perfect choice for any space. The bar has a definitively rectangular shape with a small tag bearing the brand’s logo at one end.

The 6.5 kg soundbar is 16 cm deep, 7.1 cm tall, and 120 cm wide, matched with the 8.8 kg subwoofer, which in turn is 38 cm wide, 21.4 cm tall and 38 cm deep. As far as soundbars go, this is one of the biggest around.

Elegant and unobtrusive, the speaker may be mounted on the wall or set on a low table beneath the TV. The cylindrical-shaped wireless subwoofer, keeping with the notion of discreteness, is operable from any location within six metres.

28 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 PRODUCT REVIEW

It’s a 5.2 system, so all six front-firing speakers—2 left, 2 centres, and 2 right—are aimed directly at the listener. Two drivers, on each side, that fire in opposite directions make up the “5” in the arrangement. There are two “height channels” that direct sound upward to round out the “.2” in the configuration.

The ceiling effects speakers that fire upward are hidden behind a perforated aluminium plate at the top of the bar. To maintain continuity with the rest of the instrument, a dark grey acoustically transparent cloth covers the front and sides. This adds a touch of sophistication to the design.

You may toggle the sound bar on (standby), choose a source (input source), pause or resume playing the audio track (play/pause), and adjust the volume level using the five identical buttons on the top. The standby/ignition button is illuminated by a backlight whose hue changes depending on the audio input. The source and volume are shown on a five-scrolling front display panel.

The bar has one eARC-compatible HDMI 2.1 output and two standard HDMI inputs on the rear. In addition to connecting to a TV through the HDMI out, the device may also connect to the HDMI output of other devices such as gaming consoles, DVD players, and Blu-ray players. Additionally, there is a USB port on the back of the soundbar, so that

one can enjoy audio on a USB storage device, such as an MP3 player or flash memory stick.

Rear WDAL 2.0 Controls are situated in the rear. These controls can be used to connect with wireless speakers via the WDAL2.0 as SUB / REAR / FRONT / CENTRE channel. One can wirelessly connect up to 6 additional speakers that support WDAL 2.0 to the soundbar.

Subwoofer

The Klang Sub5 is equipped with WDAL 2.0, which means which makes it possible to connect with the soundbar wireless. The subwoofer features 2 active speakers and 4 passive membranes with a total music power of 360 watts. When delivered the subwoofer is pre-paired with the bar but it can also be paired manually

The subwoofer’s top is completely flat, and its outside edges are coated in the same acoustically transparent material as the soundbar. The volume of the subwoofer may be adjusted using a little rotating knob on the unit’s rear.

SEPTEMBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 29 PRODUCT REVIEW

Connecting the Soundbar

As most televisions in the market are ARC compliant, the support for eARC bi-directional data channel in the bar allows for the playing of uncompressed 5.1 and even uncompressed 7.1 surround sound. But for those TVs that are not ARC compliant the soundbar can be connected to the TV using the standard HDMI connection.

This connection option allows only playback of video/audio from external devices connected directly to the HDMI 1 or 2 inputs on the soundbar. If the TV does not have an HDMI ARC connector, one will have to use an optical or analogue (3.5 mm) connection to play sound directly from the TV. The HDMI connections support all standards including HDMI CEC.

The bar supports WPS mode which can be set up using Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Home. Thanks to the soundbar’s IEEE 802.11n-compliant WiFi module, integration into the network is very easy. Bluetooth version V4.2 + EDR enables connectivity to the soundbar with a Bluetooth device.

Dolby Atmos and DTS

The bar gives you an immersive listening experience by delivering sound in three-dimensional space, and all the richness, clarity, and power of Dolby sound. The full Dolby Atmos experience is only available when the Soundbar is connected to the source via a High-Speed HDMI cable.

The Soundbar will still function when connected via other methods (such as a Digital Optical cable) but these are unable to support all of the Dolby features.

The soundbar is able to process content in DTS, DTS-HD, DTS:X, DTS Virtual:X, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD, Dolby Atmos, LPCM 2ch/Mch, and Dolby MAT. In principle, this is based on DSP Signalling Processing and is capable of upscaling stereo content to virtual surround. The soundbar also supports 4K Video Pass-through, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+.

Multi-Room Audio Streaming

Using the Klang Bar5 MR and the WDAL 2.0, which is integrated into all Loewe Klang MR speakers, one

can set up a wireless, low-latency surround / multiroom sound system. This system can be used with any of the MR1, MR3, or MR5 speakers in the Loewe Klang family.

Thanks to the cooperation with DTS Play-Fi, the soundbar can offer a diverse platform that facilitates an extraordinary number of functions and streaming services. It is conveniently operated via Apple Airplay 2 or Google Cast and offers access to numerous popular streaming services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, Etc. in no time at all.

The multi-room audio streaming can also be used in combination with other DTS Play-Fi components for a total of up to 32 speakers in the network, and up to 16 speakers in a zone with up to four zones.

The DTS Play-Fi platform also supports Apple Home and Google Home. This direct connection includes control by voice command with Siri and Google Assistant.

Remote

A flat remote with two lithium CR2032 batteries is included with the bar and the subwoofer. In the dark, the remote’s lack of backlighting and the fact that all the buttons seem identical make it almost difficult to operate. The play/pause button is the only one made of rubber; the others are hard plastic. You may adjust the volume, bass, and treble with the bar’s remote.

Balanced and Powerful Sound

Individuals who are concerned deeply about the aesthetics of their electronics and want a sound system that can fill a medium to a large living room with balanced, sufficient sound will appreciate the Loewe Klang Bar5 MR soundbar and its sub5 subwoofer.

Its wide connectivity and multi-room functionality make it the most complete product on the market. With the pricing of INR 1,64,900, the soundbar is a high-end product for aesthetic-loving audiophiles.

Reinventing Switches

Think of switches and stereotypical references may spring into your mind. But today the dynamics of switches are changing just like everything else around us. Today, Smart Switches are no longer restricted to specific forms and functions they have evolved over the years, from simply dimming and turning lights On and Off with a scheduling system built in; to the new-age Smart Switches which are available with technically advanced features and aesthetically appealing finishes. A single smart switch is equipped to perform multiple tasks and even replace a whole host of gadgets. These hightech switches offer a host of benefits like energy efficiency, cost saving and user convenience.

According to Verified Market Research, the Smart Switch Panel Market has grown due to the increased acceptance of smart technologies in the market. The Smart Switch Panel permits full home automation, which means that all of the switches in the house are connected to a single central electrical point. The single action with the main electrical equipment impacts all of the other connected switches

automatically. A Smart Switch allows you to operate lights, fans, and other connected appliances and gadgets with your smartphone or an App.

Smart Switch Panel Market, by products is broadly segregated into four segments (a) Push Button (b) Rocker (c) Specialty (d) Toggle

The Rocker segment dominates the Global Smart Switch Panel Market. Rocker switches are electromechanical components that are used to turn a device On or Off or activate a certain feature. They can be located on a PCB or mounted on a panel. For example, turning on a coffee machine. Rocker switches are one of the simplest and most popular ways to turn an item On or Off because they use a seesaw mechanism. Toggle switches come in a range of shapes and sizes, including horizontal, vertical, and right-angle configurations. Electromechanical components featuring a lever and a switch enclosure are known as toggle switches. Pushing up or down on the lever activates the device or function.

Music can either be controlled per area or one track can be played throughout the house.

Concept and Scope of Work

The brief of the client was to create a sanctuary, which would not only reflect their lifestyle and preference but would also be as hands-free as possible. “In short, the client wanted a home with traditional aesthetics yet modern automation techniques to be at power with today’s times.” says Ar. Paushika Gupta. Further adding insight on the design process, she says, “We have included lighting, audio, video, security, HVAC and heating – all combined into one system. Since the client travels extensively, home safety was a major concern, hence, automation systems were to be used in order to be able to check in on their home from anywhere in the world.”

Paushika Gupta Architecture + Design and Systems Integrator Vineet Jha, Touchlite Automatic Automation has designed a secured and wellintegrated home in New Delhi.

All the amenities in the bedroom can be controlled through one control panel.

Planning and Implementation Phases

Paushika along with Systems Integrator Mr. Vineet Jha, Touchlite Automatic Automation designed a workable format where HVAC, lighting, audio, video, intercom, and security were integrated together in order to provide a unified and personalized utilitarian experience to the client. The focus was to use only ‘one touch’, to dim the lights, play music, turn up the heat, lock the doors and arm the security system.

The team has incorporated a decentralised automation system because it provided the advantage of quick installation and easy operation for this project. All devices were connected wirelessly from lighting switches to voice commands to apps on phones.

Smart Home Automation Used

“With Control 4 automation system, we used the EA-3 controller for entertainment and automation, this ensured that the house was able to automate lighting, video, audio, and security. The EA-3 controller is a small modem that can be easily installed behind a television screen. control system, a home theatre integrated into one remote control, air conditioner scenes and a security system via 4sight lets the client take care of their home from anywhere in the world.” says Systems Integrator Mr. Vineet Jha, Touchlite automatic automation.

Advantages of Technology to Homeowners

“With the Smart Home OS3, one can set scenes in keypads, control the humidity and climate inside a space, pair up music in the entire house, etc., for example, a night scene with dimmed down lighting. Or control the home theatre. One can also set a scene for the cooking time in the kitchen where the lights turn up and a home cooking channel starts playing. For the drawing and dining area, the preset lighting scenes deliver either a dimly created ambience or a fully bright room for vibrant discussions, there is also a feature for music that can either be controlled per area or one track can be played throughout the house. The home theatre system is controlled by one app on the phone/ipad that can be used to create a home theatre mood-lit scene along with one touch switching on and off. Similarly, the whole house is made accessible via phone application when the homeowner is away from home or in any part of the world. The security systems get locked by the swipe of a button, along with the curtains getting drawn as per the night time routine and morning routine of the homeowner.” Explains Vineet.

44 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 CASE STUDY
Automatic control of lights saves energy from endless hours of excessive usage.

Energy-Efficiency and Green Norms

Control 4 system helps immensely in energy efficiency, such that energy saving does not sacrifice the homeowner’s comfort or convenience. For instance, certain lights turn on and off automatically based on the Control4 system’s built-in astronomical time clock. The lights are never on full brightness level which saves a lot more energy. As a part of the morning preset scene, a select number of lights switch on and similarly at night, all the lights turn off at the click of a single button by the homeowner. The hot water systems, as well as the air conditioning systems, have set the timing for automatic switching on and off which saves energy from endless hours of excessive usage. This saves up enough power to use for other audio and video devices in the house.

Challenges and Precautions

“While finalising which system to go ahead with for automation, one of the challenges faced was having too many apps to do things. Instead of making life easier, it would be making life harder. Hence, having Control4 for automatic integration in one app was very useful. Another challenge faced was overheating of devices due to high temperatures, the solution for this was a dust-free and wellventilated environment for the devices, wherein, there is enough space and no device is entangled together.” informs Jha.

Selecting Right Automation

It is important to understand the needs of the

In Conversation with Rakesh Sachdev, Founder & Managing Director, Acetech Technologies

In an interview with Smart Home World, Rakesh Sachdev, Founder & Managing Director of Acetech Technologies, discussed the imminent debut of the Matter standard, device compatibility, lighting controls, HCL, integration, and more.

Please walk us through Acetech Technology’s journey up to this point.

We have a 36-year history. Our journey as system integrators began in 1986 under “Eastland Business Corporation.” At the time, we mostly handled telecom system integration for large and mid-sized corporations.

We represented Larsen and Turbo, a licensed manufacturer of C-DOT EPABX (Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange) systems, otherwise known as telecom systems. As the 2000s progressed, we expanded into new integration verticals such as CCTV and security access control panels. We partnered with Schneider Electric in 2007 to make their products available locally.

46 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 INTERVIEW

When we rebranded as Acetech Technologies in 2008, we became one of the first home technology integrators to provide a full range of home technology solutions. Our integration services now range from lighting and security systems to irrigation, water supply, and climate control. We also offer business fibre optics solutions such as network security, enterprise networking, etc.

What is your USP?

Acetech strives to provide one-of-a-kind, valueadded solutions that stand out. We thoroughly understand how every system functions, which is the only reason this is possible. Our strength is knowing how to optimise a system so the user can get more out of it. This alone distinguishes Acetech from other integrators.

An effective pricing strategy has also contributed to increasing our customer base. We disagree that smart home technology is only for the wealthy. We provide customised solutions based on the client’s budget.

We believe that “Service is a matter of Attitude”. Instead of making excuses for our clients, we need to think of ways to solve their problems. Everyone on the Acetech team is trained never to make excuses. If there is a problem, no matter what causes it, they are to fix it.

During the peak days of COVID-19, when all service providers struggled with doubts about how to serve their customers best, we put this belief into practice. During that time, our engineers went out into the field dressed in PPC suits and made it their mission to ensure that customers received the best possible care.

Please elaborate on lighting controls and the science behind them.

All fixtures in a centralised system are connected to some actuator via a channel. An actuator is merely a relay or dimmer. A channel connects a light circuit to an actuator.

For example, three light fixtures could be looped on one circuit that leads to the actuator through a channel. I can connect this circuit to channel one of an eight-channel dimmer. These three lights will simultaneously turn On and Off, dim, or light up. Channel two will be connected to another circuit, and so on.

SEPTEMBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 47 INTERVIEW

This way, the entire house would be connected to actuators via various channels, each leading to different fixtures. This is also known as a network. These systems also feature control processors and keypads. We pre-program control processors to follow our instructions when given a command. When a user presses a key on the keypad, it sends out a command in the form of data. The processors receive and transmit this data to all actuators and associated devices.

Each channel has a unique address; the command is executed when the relevant channel recognises network data. This is the concept behind controlling lights or any other device.

A smart home control system has four essential aspects: input devices, interfaces, processors, and output devices. Keypads, mobile apps, motion sensors, voice instructions, gestural controls, etc., all fall under the category of input devices.

In some cases, these input devices talk directly to control processors. In other circumstances, input and processing may be separated by an interface or protocol converter. Interfaces convert inputs to WiFi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave protocols.

The final aspect is the devices connected to the

actuators, such as your lights, air conditioners, fans, blinds, etc. These are output devices.

Why should a homeowner automate their home?

Have you entered a room and felt good? Or is the foyer of a five-star hotel relaxing? An effect of proper lighting is a shift in mood and state of mind. What happens in commercial spaces is that lighting is used very well. Restaurants employ romantic lighting. Theatres use fade-in and fade-out lighting. This play of light aids mental transitions. However, most homeowners feel that the lights in their homes must be functional.

But in reality, lighting not only makes people feel better but also makes the room look better. For instance, white lights improve attentiveness while warm lighting makes it comfortable. The user can enhance the room’s aesthetic value by adjusting the brightness, darkness, and placement of lights.

Ideally, a home should have three kinds of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. This helps them create an effect called “layering” and helps define a space. Plus, these setups are affordable and doable even on a tight budget.

48 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 INTERVIEW

How important is Human Centric Lighting in residential lighting?

Human Centric Lighting is advantageous in commercial settings. Research supports several reasons why offices should invest in human-centric lighting.

A competent architect will consider the sunrise and sunset when designing residential lighting. They will position the house so that it receives enough natural light. They may also use architectural elements, such as huge French windows with motorised window treatments, to regulate the intensity of the available illumination.

Supplementing natural light with HCL is not the way to go when it comes to residential lighting. So I would never recommend HCL in residential projects. In my opinion, the design of the house should be in such a way that it brings in maximum light and fresh air.

Please take us through the process your team follows during installation.

My team has been instructed to document the project accurately so that even after ten years,

anyone can understand it and fix issues without a professional. Everything we’ve documented about our project should be sufficient for finding a solution. This is something not many system integrators do in our field.

We consider a project failed if its documentation isn’t up to mark. Therefore, following the initial confirmation of the order with the clients, we initiate the process of creating project documentation. We create drawings and take note of the customer’s wishes. We need to build a future-proof, robust system that considers all of the variables that will come into play in the future.

When our designs are ready, we give them to the architect and electrical contractor with instructions on how to proceed. During pre-installation, we make written reports on all wiring, back-end devices, mounting, and other prerequisites to prevent errors.

Every time anything changes at the site, we keep a log of it. There are various reasons to change our approach, so keeping a record ensures a seamless installation.

Please take us through the after-sale service process.

The after-sales process is mainly used to perfect the system through programming. The programming procedure follows a set pattern. The first thing we do is install functional lighting. We alter the parameters based on individual preferences after two weeks of testing.

We begin making changes at the client’s request after the system has been operating for a while. The goal here is to make full use of the system’s capabilities.

What trends are you noticing in the market?

In the residential apartment market, homeowners prefer wireless systems over wired systems to

SEPTEMBER 2022 I SMARTHOME WORLD I 49 INTERVIEW

eliminate the effort and cost of wiring. High-end homeowners prefer KNX-compatible wired systems.

DALI is also becoming more prevalent as the preferred dimming technology. More and more lighting manufacturers are developing innovative DALI-compatible lighting fixtures.

On the other hand, small battery-powered fingerprint locks are gaining popularity. These locks can be used on furniture, cabinets, cupboards, and even room doors.

Energy-efficient products with lower carbon footprints are gaining popularity. Techniques such as motion-based lighting, scheduling, and using energy-efficient fixtures are becoming the norm.

Corporations with large budgets are investing in HCL. Soon, practically all commercial spaces will have some automation regardless of size.

Over-the-top (OTT) and home theatre markets have seen tremendous growth over the past two years, primarily due to COVID-19. With that in mind, sales of professional speakers and high-definition projectors are rising.

and the rest of the industry’s heavy hitters are all working together to develop this standard. This will motivate secondary manufacturers to adopt the protocol and increase the number of items compatible with Matter.

You can expect three results from Matter. To start, it will significantly simplify cross-compatibility. Connecting any device from any ecosystem to any platform will be possible. All of our gadgets would be able to communicate with one another, making our lives more effortless than ever before. Second, virtually all products designed to automate the home will be available at low prices. This will pave the way for the most widespread use of intelligent home systems. Matter will make smart houses truly smart.

Third, manufacturers will be the most affected by Matter. They will have to adjust quickly to Mattercompatible devices. All keypads, switches, and controllers must be Matter compatible.

Integrators, on the other hand, will benefit to some extent from Matter. They would be able to provide cutting-edge technologies at an affordable price. This, however, will enhance competition among wireless automation integrators.

When it comes to the industry, Matter will be a revolutionary concept. Google, Amazon, Samsung,

The DIY industry will grow significantly in the future years. People who are not technically adept will be able to do DIY thanks to matter compatibility. Overall, the wired automation market will be pretty safe for system integrators.

What is the game-changing innovation in the lighting and automation industry?

Slow Design—Embracing A New Methodology for Sustainable Design

Slow Design can be defined as a design process that is deeply conscious of the lifespan, materials and processes used in the creation of its end product, resulting in ecological soundness and consumer enjoyment. Slow Design emerged as a new paradigm for sustainable design, where design balances sociocultural and individual needs with environmental well-being. Sustainable design has always been considered the ‘trinity’ of economy, ecology and equity. However, design has often been more reactive to the needs of the economy, commerce, and the marketplace. Literature indicates that none of the economies – ‘industrial,’ ‘consumer’ or ‘knowledge’ –are equally or equitably distributed; thereby creating a need for a new sustainable design paradigm to not only ‘save the planet’ but to ‘save designers’ and the professional reputation of design. Time and again economy-driven designs have proven not to put the environment first. One of humanity’s most critical next steps will be decoupling design decisions from economics.

Slow, as a philosophy, stands up against the possible degradation of life through fast consumerism and constant want. Fast, in opposition to slow, does not necessarily mean physical speed but more the hurrying along of natural pace. Designs created through the slow process are developed with actual need and well-being in mind, using renewable or recycled materials and energy, and with their futures thoroughly mapped – be it biodegradability or recycling, following zero-waste or cradle-to-cradle philosophies. Slow does not conform to shortening time spans allocated to life cycles of products in the marketplace; it does not celebrate the smallest, biggest, and fastest; however, it does celebrate balancing anthropocentric needs with planetary needs and the de-commodification of time. ‘Slow’ because the time constraints of economic growth and expediency are removed, and design goes beyond the fabrication of things for the marketplace, thus avoiding competition in an increasingly accelerated game of technological progress, brand positioning and commercial globalization.

Slow thinking in lighting design

Slow Design is where lighting professionals can experience real freedom. When lighting improves our lives, while simultaneously improving our societies and cultures when lighting contributes to restoring the health of our environment. As the lighting industry is morphing into an IoT concept, based on seamless digital interconnectivity across all facets of human life, acceleration and innovation are key to survival. Smart city concepts are leading lighting into the Internet of Things where connected lighting enables digital technologies that are critical to the expansion of city services. All these paradigm shifts in lighting have seriously challenged traditional ways of designing with light. In such a time of change, embracing these agents of change and developing a new standard for lighting design seems to be a way forward. This new standard requires universally agreed upon metrics, measurement methods, limits and criteria that would set strong baselines for energy efficiency and functional performance, and

address key parameters of connected lighting. Slow thinking will allow lighting professionals to focus on the decisions, research, or processes that are the most vital for developing such a standard.

Slow design principles for lighting design

Six principles of slow design have been postulated to enable lighting professionals to better understand their own identity as a designer, reflect upon their own design processes, evaluate tangible outcomes, and imagine new scenarios, namely: Enlarge, Divulge, Engage, Contemplate, Participate, and Evolve. These principles are used to carefully and continuously explore lighting design from the perspective of slow design. Slow principles can support appropriateness, as they allow for time throughout the design process for thinking about the intended design outcomes and how best to reach those goals while keeping the integrity of the design intact. These principles were put forward as a set of criteria against which designers can interrogate and appraise their ideas, processes, motives, and

52 I SMARTHOME WORLD I SEPTEMBER 2022 GUEST ARTICLE

outcomes; in effect creating a ‘shifting brief’ and a mutable outcome as the design process unfolds. Lighting professionals can return to these principles several times during the design process, and apply them again to evaluate the final design outcome and better understand its potential future impacts.

Slow principle 1– Enlarge

Slow design enlarges the real and potential expressions of environments beyond their perceived functionalities, physical attributes and lifespans. Lighting environments can go beyond mere functional or physical attributes such as energy benefits, and consider temporal attributes and the form of interactions that take place with users over time. Temporal attributes can include an expansion into user interactions that permeate into daily life.

Slow principle 2 – Divulge

Slow design divulges the often forgotten or missed experiences in everyday life, including materials and processes that can be easily overlooked in the creation or existence of designs. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that brings components of the digital world into the real world through immersive sensations. Introducing AR-enriched lighting systems into physical architecture and immaterial space can divulge the under-observed phenomena of the built environment.

Slow principle 3 – Engage

Slow design engages in open-source and collaborative processes, relying on sharing, cooperation and transparency of information so that designs may continue to evolve into the future. Cross-disciplinary collaborations and interdependency between IoT and lighting systems can make geospatial indoor navigation services such as way-finding and asset tracking more affordable with their combined power and geographic density.

Slow principle 4 – Contemplate

Slow design environments and experiences induce contemplative consumption. As lighting control interfaces facilitate lighting consumption, they can slowly reveal user patterns thus rendering them increasingly precious to the user over time.

Slow principle 5 – Participate

Slow design is a participatory design process, where users actively exchange and embrace ideas so as to foster social accountability and enhanced communities. Smart cities can gather even more momentum with lighting as city dwellers can be invited to connect with the histories and patterns of lighting through empirical observation, sensory awareness and intuitive imagining.

Slow principle 6 – Evolve

Slow designs are behavioural change agents promoting richer experiences that evolve from the dynamic maturation of environments and systems over time. Lighting systems can be designed as cosharing tools for reorganising neighbourhoods, and

instigating our relationship with our neighbours and our connection to the natural environment.

Conclusion:

The incorporation of lighting with slow features requires a larger calculated vision and value that looks far beyond the old Return-On-Investment (ROI) energy story. While skeptics may argue against the financial viability of these slow features, there is a good possibility that economic interests will soon gather around these features. The simple reason being that people, societies, and cultures in the future will purchase products, services, and environments that provide deep satisfaction to human needs while also scoring positively on environmental and sociocultural balance sheets.

The Concept of Smart Solutions & Consumer Experience it Offers

For those few who missed attending the Smart Home Expo 2022 here is a flashback of the Panel Discussion on the topic: The Concept of Smart Solutions & Consumer Experience It Offers.

This session was moderated by Rohit Suraj Founder and CEO. Urban Zen. He was joined by other eminent panelists Ar. Reza Kabul, founder, ARK, Prashant Sutaria, Principal Architect, Prashant Sutaria Architects, Alok Hada, MD, Anusha Technovision Pvt. Ltd., Suman Kumar, sales director, Smato, Rajesh Sharma, Director-Marketing GM Modular.

The discussion began on a light note where the moderator Rohit Suraj shared his experience of how overwhelmed, he was when he walked into this beautifully designed venue. He said, “The first thing that came to my mind, was how little he knew about Smart Automation and was very impressed at the number of brands that participated, which was a clear indication that this segment is booming.”

Rohit opened the panel discussion by asking Ar. Reza Kabul, “How receptible are your clients to

Home Automation? To which Ar. Reza said, “There has been a mixed reaction from his clients. The tech-savvy and well-travelled clients are always eager to change their lifestyles and adopt new technology. But after installing the automation technology, sometimes one faces the challenge of how to upgrade the technology. What is the type of maintenance required? If there is more knowledge sharing and awareness created by brands and media. There will be no hesitation in adopting home automation. This technology is very well received in the commercial and hospitality industry.”

Adding his insights on the same Prashant Suthara says, “When I am working with clients in Mumbai, they are more receptive to home automation. I agree with Reza that clients are very receptive to the same technology in corporate and hospitality. But things are gradually changing when it comes to two-tier cities, they have bigger homes and good budgets, and are eager to adopt a newer lifestyle. We have recently used Lutron for a palatial project we did in North.”

PANEL DISCUSSION SERIES-4

When Rohit asked Alok Hada,“What are the categories you could automate? We assume that there are a few categories lighting, curtain, AC, security, audio and video, etc.” Alok Hada says, “As a system integrator, we get clients who are generally aware of only smart lighting and security. After studying their lifestyle, we educate them about home automation, we introduce and educate them about other segments like air conditioning, audio, video, and security to name a few. We never force them but yes, we explain the advantages and once their doubts and concepts are cleared they are receptive to adopting automation in their home.”

Rohit shared his experience when clients tell him, why they should opt for Home Automation. When there are a lot of DIY available in the market? Sharing his opinion on the same Alok said, “All professionals on this dais must have faced this similar situation. DIY and retrofit solutions have a huge market for small apartments. When we work on huge corporate sites or bigger residential apartments we go for wired solutions because they are more reliable for bigger projects. Though there are many brands providing wireless solutions. We offer both solutions.”

Speaking about upgrading the technology and the cost Suman Kumar says, “Updates do happen, so upgradation comes with a cost especially if it is a change in the hardware. So, a custom-installed

channel is the best channel to execute your project.”

Rohit asked Rajesh Sharma, “How do they as a brand look at the smart automation market? Rajesh Sharma says, “What we look at is the scale, the first thing that comes to mind is the scale of the product or the scale of the market that we can penetrate. We believe in offering a simplified solution to customers. We offer durability, longevity, and also service part of it. Because we understand the psyche of the customers, when they install a specific automation system they expect it to function for four or five years. With GM we bring durability and assurance.”

Which is better Wired or Wireless? Alok adds, “Both can coexist, everything has its own purpose. For example, wireless is better for small to mediumscale projects. Wired is a future-proofed option but half wired and half wireless solve all your problem.”

The session concluded on a positive note, where Prashant Sutaria said, “This is a growing segment, information needs to be more transparent for the industry to grow in a big way.” While Alok Hada advised, to choose carefully and opt for a reputed brand that has been in the segment for some years. This session ended on a positive note and was educative for the audience.

Govee launched next-generation

LED strip lights

Govee, a global brand in smart lighting and RGBIC technology, announced the availability of a new generation of LED Strip Lights, dubbed the Govee LED Strip Light M1. The latest iteration provides a one-of-a-kind way to light up spaces through upgraded RGBIC+ technology, that increases beads per meter for advanced luminosity and better-segmented control, intuitive music syncing, and an abundance of customizable colours. The LED Strip Light M1 was created to tap into multiple senses, leveraging audio-enabled visuals to take your home entertainment system to the next level.

Building off its predecessor, the LED Strip Light M1 includes the latest RGBIC+ technology with ten segments at 60 light beads per metre (versus four segments of 24

LED beads per metre). This increase gives consumers the highest lumens available in a five-meter colour light strip, providing larger wall washing.

With a pre-installed control box mic

and a custom algorithm, the LED Strip Light M1 can recognize audio in the surrounding environment and sync the lights to match the beat in one of 11 different music modes. Users can also experience DreamView mode, aligning the

strip light’s effects with other Govee smart lights in your entertainment ecosystem. This provides for a truly immersive experience, whether you are enjoying a virtual concert, watching sports, or meditating at home.

With over 16 million rich colour options, including an extra warm white courtesy of its RGBIC+ technology, users can customise their environments regardless of

what they are watching or listening to. Subdivision controls and multiple modes of lighting effects also allow for unique settings such as fading, twinkle, stream, flow, and more. Users can double the fun by extending the strip light from five meters to 10 to cover a large area as well.

Like with all Govee products, the

power of personalization is put into the users’ hands through the Govee Home App. Users can easily control the strip light and select colours, brightness, effects, modes, and more through the App, as well as tap into the wider Govee community of over 11 million App users. In addition, the strip light can be used hands-free and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Sonos Launched The New Sub Mini

Sonos recently launched the Sonos Sub Mini, the wireless subwoofer that sets a new standard in its category for powerful and balanced bass. Building on the awardwinning design of Sub, the new Sub Mini delivers a rich, clear low end in a more compact, cylindrical design.

The Sub Mini, which comes in both black and white matte finishes, will go on sale around the world on October 6 for a starting price of £429 (approximately ₹37,000 INR).

“We’ve entered a more thoughtful era of streaming that prioritises quality over quantity, with creators and platforms investing in immersive entertainment experiences that put premium sound at the forefront,” says Maxime Bouvat-Merlin, SVP for Hardware and Operations at Sonos. “Sub Mini is a welcome addition to the Sonos family, rounding out our home cinema product line-up so listeners can experience cinemaquality sound that makes them feel like the main character – or player – in their favourite content.”

On the heels of introducing two new soundbars—Beam and Ray— Sonos is expanding its home cinema lineup even further with Sub Mini. The brand’s new subwoofer makes it easier than ever to supercharge your streaming experiences.

Some of the prominent features are:

• Dual custom woofers and advanced processing generates a deep, dynamic low end with no buzz or rattle, helping you

feel more immersed in every scene and song. Within the acoustically sealed cabinet, both woofers face inward to create a force-cancelling effect that neutralises distortion.

• Advanced digital signal processing maximises bass response and reproduces the full-toned low frequencies expected from a much larger subwoofer while handling the low frequencies so paired speakers like Beam, Ray, One, or One SL can focus on more midrange and high frequencies for a richer, more powerful sound experience.

• Drum up the drama in every film scene by pairing Beam or Ray with Sub Mini, or drop it even lower on your at-home dance floor by making Sub Mini your

Sonos One’s plus one.

• Unlike other subwoofers, the Sub Mini features a round design that allows it to blend naturally into your home aesthetic without taking too much space (or attention).

• Add Sub Mini to your Sonos system in just a few taps on the Sonos App, mixing and matching with different Sonos speakers to create the perfect sound system, whether you’re hosting a housewarming party or film night with friends. You can also fine-tune Sub Mini’s sound with Trueplay, which detects and adapts the speaker’s sound for reflections off the walls and furniture, giving you the best listening experience for your room and setup.
