PAGE 4 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: INTRODUCTION

Design with SmartStone In this book, SmartStone’s products for driveways, patios, pool surrounds, landscaping features and decorative wall finishes are grouped by frequently used architectural designs, demonstrating the diversity of our pavers, cobbles and cladding and presenting just some of the finishes that can be achieved. A good strategy to add value to your home is to create and maintain such an architectural style. SmartStone has various products which are engineered to work in conjunction with each other for a combined effect and for the purpose of creating various property styles in the form of contemporary, classical, mediterranean or traditional. Rest assured that you can design with SmartStone. The beautiful results displayed here have been created using only SmartStone products and the full product list, with specifications, is available at the back of this book. Contact your nearest SmartStone branch or visit our website: www.smartstone.co.za for more information.

INTRODUCTION

Colour with SmartStone One of the significant differences between SmartStone and other paving solutions is colour. SmartStone products are alive and organic and this results in natural variances between products. During the lifespan of the products, the colours will evolve and develop, resulting in an entirely unique design for your property. Although a single SmartStone product will give an indication of colour at the time of purchase, the full effect can only be seen on a larger, fully installed area where the same range of products has been used. This effect will be enhanced over time.

Because the manufacture of SmartStone products relies on natural aggregates, colours may vary from one area to another. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you visit a SmartStone showroom in your area to view the products, or ask a consultant to provide you with colour samples. There is a broad range of colours and shades available at the various branches which can be used together to create beautiful themes and patterns. Your SmartStone consultant will be able to assist you with making a choice.

PAGE 6 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: INTRODUCTION

Textures, shapes and sizes Designing with SmartStone is satisfying and rewarding, but also achievable because SmartStone has a wide variety of textures and shapes that can be applied in different settings and matched with certain styles.

All SmartStone products have unique surface textures, as each product is cast in quality-engineered moulds derived from individually created masters. Surface textures range from natural, rough products with a stone effect to products that have been engineered to look and feel like smooth concrete. As a result, since SmartStone’s products are varied, they can be used and applied to diverse themes.

Apart from surface textures, SmartStone products also have varying sizes and modular shapes for varying design applications. Many ranges boast differing sizes that can could be installed in combination with each other to create unique designs.

Please note that there might be small variations in the sizes of similar products manufactured by various licensees. Refer to www.smartstone.co.za and confirm product sizes with the SmartStone licensee in your area.

DESIGNS In this section, existing SmartStone installations have been grouped into frequently used styles. In order to further illustrate these designs, a well-known landscape architect has been tasked with recreating the same house using each of the different styles as a guideline. No structural changes were made to the house and the results were achieved using only SmartStone and plants. Paving can have a great influence on the appearance of a property and will contribute to the creation of a specific style. In some instances, a home-owner might wish to simply complement an existing architectural theme. You CAN design with SmartStone!

CONTEMPORARY These architectural representations demonstrate the transformation of an ordinary suburban house into an elegant, contemporary home with the selective use of SmartStone and soft landscaping. This contemporary design was created using straight, clean lines and muted colours, especially cool greys. To complement homes built in a contemporary style, use smooth, rectangular pavers. Alternatively, select textured paving in order to contrast the even lines of the architecture.

Note: All concrete products are prone to a temporary condition called “efflorescence (seen below), which is a white discolouration that appears naturally on the paver and cannot be washed off. This discolouration will usually disappear a few months after installation. See www.smartstone.co.za for more information.

SmartStone Ibanzi paver is a large, smooth, modern paver.

SmartStone Legogote cobbles are available in three sizes. In this example the smallest cobble is used as a border. Unlike standard paving, the use of SmartStone can create contrasts and patterns not only with colours, but also with the use of texture and shape within the design.

Long driveways might be challenging when it comes to design. SmartStone can transform your driveway to create a lasting impression of your property. A beautiful pool is often the focus of outside entertainment areas, especially during hot summer months. When paving around a pool, consider the practicalities of using non-slip pavers in a lighter colour, as dark paving tends to become very hot in the heat of the day. For safety reasons, it is advisable to use contrasting colours for copings. Ensure that your installer takes care with the grouting of flagstones. Grouting will lift when not done according to specifications. (See www.smartstone.co.za for guidelines.) With SmartStone, design options are limitless.

Note: Avoid grouting pavers when the sun is at its hottest, as the following could occur: • The pavers will suck the moisture from the grouting and this will temporarily stain them. • There will be grouting failure.

Large paving slabs are usually used for formal installations such as patios and paving around pools and walkways. These products are also ideal for informal applications such as stepping stones and creative garden features. Consult www.smartstone.co.za for guidelines on the grouting of tiles and flagstones. When grouting is done incorrectly, it will crumble and become unsightly.

Choosing the right SMARTSTONE

product for you

PAGE 158 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: PAVING BUYING GUIDE

Most important aspects to consider before buying SmartStone 1. All paving materials have strengths and weaknesses. Please refer to our comparison of paving materials on page 158 and 159 of this book for an objective overview of the most commonly used paving options in South Africa. (We even critique SmartStone!) 2. The correct installation of SmartStone cobbles or flagstones is absolutely essential for their longevity. Please refer to installation advice on page 160 and 161 of this book. Please ensure that your installer complies with the principles mentioned. If they do not, then we strongly recommend that you find an installer who does, or alternatively contact SmartStone for details of an approved installer in your area. 3. SmartStone is manufactured using concrete - and concrete has inherent characteristics. Concrete is probably the most trusted construction material in the world because of its strength, versatility and longevity. However, a concrete product is “alive” and evolves throughout its lifetime, as does SmartStone. A ceramic tile or something similar, will not. Because concrete is organic, certain natural reactions are present as well as a susceptibility to certain inherent conditions. Please refer to page 162 and 163 of this book for more information on natural phenomena that can influence concrete and therefore your SmartStone during its lifetime. 4. Applications SmartStone pavers and tiles come in four thicknesses, each designed to carry different loads, and suited to specific applications. n 15 – 20mm tiles - for indoor and outdoor use, but must be installed on a concrete sub-base. n 40mm - suitable for pedestrian traffic; used to pave courtyards, walkways, around pools and patios. n 50mm - suitable for light vehicle traffic, such as residential driveways. n 73 - 80mm - suitable for heavier traffic and used for commercial driveways and roadways.

PAVING BUYING GUIDE

Installation advice Below are ten basic, yet essential principles to adhere to when installing SmartStone cobbles and flagstones. It is important to ensure that your installer is familiar with the product and its installation. 1. Plastic sheeting should never be placed under SmartStone paving. Weeds do not grow underneath paving. They grow from seeds that enter the paving from above, via bird droppings, wind, etc. Plastic sheeting underneath the paving will not prevent this and may create serious structural problems. The use of plastic sheeting is therefore never advised. 2. The sub base or earth under the paving must be well compacted. The use of a mechanical roller such as the Bomag 90 is recommended, especially if the installation is at a new house where there has been excavation. It is advisable to insist on a mechanical roller, rather than a plate compactor. 3. Discuss patterns, lines and the installation plan with the installer prior to starting. This will ensure that the end result is aesthetically pleasing and practical. 4. Ensure that the installer allows for levels and water runoff. Insist on drainage plans and always take natural slopes into consideration. 5. When river sand is used for bedding, ensure that it is moist. River sand should be spread out in small, manageable sections to ensure that the sand remains moist throughout the installation period. 6. Best practice for installing flagstones. SmartStone recommends that flagstones be installed on a concrete screed. 7. Grouting: i. The grouting of SmartStone cobbles should be done with wet slurry. The use of dry cement, sprayed with water, is not recommended. ii. Grouting of flagstones should be done with SmartStone-approved grouting. (Details are available from your nearest SmartStone branch.) iii. The grouting of flagstones should be “pointed”. iv. Tiles and flagstones should be moist when grouted. v. “Plaster Key” should be added to the grouting mix. vi. Flagstones could be covered with plastic sheets for four to five days after installation in order to prevent the grouting from drying too quickly. If grouting dries too quickly, it will crack a year or two after installation. vii. Ensure grouting and cement are washed off immediately to avoid staining the SmartStone product. A hand sponge is recommended for this purpose rather than brooms and mops.

PAGE 162 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: PAVING BUYING GUIDE

8. The Installer should work in sections. The area should be divided into smaller sections and completed systematically, section by section. 9. SmartStone products should never be dumped and transported in wheelbarrows, as this will result in damage to the product. If wheelbarrows are used, they should be lined with blankets. Please bear in mind that SmartStone products are handmade and should therefore be handled carefully. 10. Do not drive on a new SmartStone driveway for seven days, or walk on SmartStone paving for five days after installation. 11. Your SmartStone paving should be allowed to cure thoroughly before sealing. We recommend a six month waiting period before sealant is applied.

For comprehensive installation instructions, refer to: www.smartstone.co.za

PAVING BUYING GUIDE

Natural phenomena that may affect the appearance of your SmartStone Rain and sun, in particular, attack the surface of concrete over time, but do not affect the overall structural integrity of concrete products. Concrete also absorbs and releases water as it becomes wet and then dries out in the sun. From these powerful and ever-present natural phenomena, certain visual effects may become evident in concrete products. These are: 1. Efflorescence Efflorescence is a natural phenomenon that occurs as a result of a complex chemical process and manifests as a white film on the surface of concrete, clay and natural stone products. It is caused by the formation of salt deposits on or near the surface of the product, or by the soil below the pavers. However, it is harmless and temporary. In time, efflorescence fades and, in most cases, disappears completely. Detailed information on efflorescence is available on the Internet, or consult the Concrete Manufacturers Association brochure: Concrete Block Paving: Efflorescence is only a temporary problem, available at www.cma.org.za. Efflorescence and SmartStone. As efflorescence is a natural phenomenon, SmartStone cannot guarantee efflorescencefree products (pre- or post-installation). We believe the best cure for efflorescence is simply to leave it, as it will disappear in time. Many paving installations are not affected by efflorescence; some have efflorescence for a few weeks, while others may be affected for months. Sometimes efflorescence recurs and in other cases, it occurs only once. 2. Black efflorescence Rarely, in some area-specific cases, pavers can become darker or even black. This may occur within a time frame of two to eighteen months after installation. The blackening does not affect all the pavers on a site. In fact, often one will see normal pavers surrounded by a patch of dark pavers. Black efflorescence is usually a permanent condition and can happen to any concrete products, specifically on concrete bridges and building facades. Black efflorescence and SmartStone. The blackening of SmartStone products is random and not yet well understood by the concrete industry. The blackening is beyond the control of manufacturers and does not affect the pavers’ structural performance. Currently, the theory is that the blackening of concrete may be affected by the specific soil conditions of an area. Proof of this is that neighbouring sites installed with concrete products generally also show blackening. 3. Discolouration or “differential curing”, especially in larger products An obvious variation in the colour of individual pavers (a lighter or darker border compared to the colour of the centre of the paver) may be present when unpacking your pavers. This condition is called “differential curing”, which is temporary and is caused by a chemical process. The stains will become less noticeable and will usually disappear over a period of time.

PAGE 164 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: PAVING BUYING GUIDE

4. Picture framing on concrete bedded flagstones This phenomenon normally only becomes visible a few days after installation has been completed and some flagstones are more prone to it than others. The common denominator is usually that cement-contaminated water from the wet cement slurry grout is absorbed by the flagstones and transported through internal capillaries within the paver. During the process of evaporation, a “transport chain is created within the body of the paver, with cement-laden water being absorbed from the underside and joint faces of the paver. However, the cement residue does not evaporate; it cures and leaves a stain. This stain often looks like a picture frame around the flagstone. SmartStone recommends that flagstones be moist when bedded and grouted in order to reduce the possibility of cementcontaminated water being absorbed by the flagstones. 5. Pinholes In some instances, pinholes may be present on the surfaces of very large pavers, or they might appear a week or two after installation. Please ensure that your contractor does not install any flagstones with pinholes, as SmartStone will exchange products delivered with pinholes free of charge. However, if the pinholes appear after installation, DIY repair kits are available to fill them.

PAVING BUYING GUIDE

Why choose SmartStone? 1. Thicker pavers provide more strength SmartStone cobbles are manufactured to conform to the Concrete Manufacturers’ Association’s recommended standards for residential driveway applications. Its recommendation is a 50mm thick paver. Many other manufacturers, however, sell products with a 40mm thickness. It should be taken into consideration that a 50mm SmartStone cobble contains 20% more concrete than a 40mm paver, which makes it slightly more expensive, but definitely much stronger. 2. Denser concrete provides more strength A higher density of concrete provides superior strength. It is therefore advisable to take the actual weight of the various cast stone products into consideration when making a choice. The lighter the product, the less strength it will provide. 3. Nibs for installation accuracy All SmartStone cobbles have visible nibs on the sides which ensure precise installation of the product. The nibs are produced using high-tech moulds and precision-engineered masters. 4. Striking design capabilities With SmartStone products, you do not just buy a paving block or tile – you buy a design. All our products can be used in combination with one another. This engineering feat allows you to create innovative designs and themes to complement your home and garden. With more than 30 years in the industry, SmartStone has the experience to help you achieve your desired style. 5. Dimensional accuracy for neatness & strength Although our cast-stone products are handmade, SmartStone’s dimensional accuracy is one of the reasons we are considered to be world leaders in this field. Dimensional accuracy not only ensures an easier, neater installation, but also guarantees strength and longevity once installed. 6. We have the capacity to supply on time One of the greatest issues in the cast-stone industry is the ability to produce on time. SmartStone is a reputable company, has timeously supplied and completed many large commercial projects (see www.smartstone.co.za), and has a proven track record. Production times can therefore be confidently adhered to by all SmartStone branches. 7. Superior moulds for superior products It is important to note that cast-stone moulds have a limited lifespan. At SmartStone we have our own mould manufacturing plant, which – together with a stringent replacement programme – ensures the integrity of our moulds, thereby ensuring the integrity of our product.

PAGE 166 I SMARTSTONE HARDSCAPING DESIGN HANDBOOK: PAVING BUYING GUIDE

8. ‘Natural’ is not always better Cast-stone has been developed over centuries to offer the beauty of natural stone, but without its limitations. SmartStone products offer tested, engineered qualities that result in a predictable, durable, lifespan. Because of SmartStone’s controlled manufacturing process, aggregates are meticulously graded to produce an end product that is uniform in density – without weak spots. SmartStone products are engineered with natural stone as the blueprint, but using technology as the quality assurance. 9. Lastly, ensure that you are using genuine SmartStone products SmartStone has become a fairly generic name for cobbles and flagstones. It is advisable to be present when stock is delivered to ensure that the product is genuine SmartStone.

PRODUCTS An alternative to cement grouting Available at selected SmartStone branches. For more than 20 years, Romex has been the world’s leading manufacturer of paving jointing materials. Its high-quality, resin-based grouting solutions have been developed to overcome the shortcomings of cement grouting. Romex grouts are tried and tested, and have been used on paving installations throughout the world. Romex resin is imported from Germany, but the specially graded silica sand which used in conjunction with it is sourced in South Africa. It is therefore more expensive than cement grouting, but – when applied correctly – it is guaranteed not to crack and break up. Benefits: • Designed for a single purpose: Jointing of paving • Reliable and long-lasting • Does not crack or disintegrate • Can be used for jointing repair jobs • Consistent, compressive, flexural and adhesive strength • Fast and simple installation • No staining • Resistant to weeds and digging ants.

Romex is easy to install in just a few simple steps:

1

4

Pour the two-part mix into the aggregate.

Pour the mixture onto the area.

2

5

Mix them together thoroughly.

Sweep the mixture into the grouting gaps. Make sure the mixture is evenly distributed.

3

Wet the pavers onto which the mixture will be applied.

6

Wash the excess Romex mixture off the pavers.

Sealing, stabilising and protecting your paving Available at selected SmartStone branches.

Resiecco by:

Since 1993, Resiblock Limited, the block sealer expert, has sold block paving sealers. Resiecco is a water-based product and seals flagstones, while also binding the grouting between them. Why consider Resiecco? The failure of wide cement joints between flagstones is a common problem in South Africa. This can be attributed to the expansion, contraction and movement of both the flagstones and the jointing material at different degrees and various rates. Ressieco offers an alternative, proven jointing solution for flagstones. An additional benefit is that Resiecco was originally developed to be a superior cast-stone sealant. What are the benefits of Resiecco? • It stabilises sand and creates a rock-hard bind between sand particles and pavers. • Resiecco expands and contracts with the pavers. • It is deal for larger flagstone joints, but could also effectively stabilise sand jointing between cobbles. • It is resistant to digging ants and weeds. • Its application is fast and simple. • There is no staining, as is the case with cement grouting. • It doubles as sealant. Resiecco is easy to apply in just a few simple steps: • Apply Resiecco when it is cool, early in the morning or late afternoon. • Sweep sand into paving joints (silica sand with a grading analysis of 0.4-0.85 is recommended). • Use a pump sprayer with a mist nozzle to spray on the joints at a low pressure. • Ensure joints are saturated. Leave them to dry for a few minutes in order to stabilise the sand. • Apply Resiecco to the flagstones. • A paint roller could be used to ensure even application. • Ensure that there is no traffic over the sealed area for a day after application. • Remove any excess sand particles from the flagstones with a paint scraper. • A second coat might be required.

Resiecco not only seals the surface of the paving, but also hardens and stabilises the jointing material between pavers.
