SUNSET PARK A premium dog food brand with celebrity firepower has set up shop in Santa Monica, but this chow company put as much stock in how many animals it feeds as how well it feeds them. FreeHand is to dog food what TOMS is to shoes — for every bag of specialized kibble purchased, another will be donated to a local shelter or dog rescue. In Santa Monica’s case, that’s Santa Monica Animal Shelter and Take Me Home, a mobile rescue organization that takes dogs off of “death row” at the county pounds. That local aspect was important to Tom Bagamane, serial entrepreneur and cofounder of FreeHand. Bagamane has worked for the past two years to create not only a brand of dog food that the canines both enjoy and meets their needs, but a business model that can support the one-for-one proposition. In the six months since the product launched, the company has already given away 16,000 pounds of its Rescue-1 dog food, a formula that can be eaten by most dogs regardless of size or breed. That’s 46,000 meals that shelters haven’t had to buy, allowing them to spend money on things like vaccinations and medical care. “It’s a model that has yet to be seen in the pet food industry,” he said. That model was a selling point for Fit Dog Sports Club, the only Santa Monica store currently offering the product, according to FreeHand’s website. “We liked the idea of high-quality food and the character of FreeHand itself,” said Terrance Walker, manager at Fit Dog. The company chooses to donate its free food to the Lange Foundation, a group that rescues homeless animals. “It’s all about giving,” Walker said. “It’s doing really well, catching on with clients.” Bagamane hopes it will also improve adoption rates as healthier, happier, welladjusted dogs have a better shot at rescue. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between 3 and 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year, in part because no one brought them home.

SAMOHI The Santa Monica High School Vikings made short work of the Alhambra Moors in the first round of the CIFSouthern Section Division 1A playoffs on Friday at home. The No. 2 seeded Vikings routed the Moors, 75-32, taking only an hour to do so. By the time the third quarter rolled around, fans in the away section were begging for a forfeit. Coming into the playoffs, Alhambra lost four of its last five games and forfeited the final two games of the season. “I just wanted to come out hard,” said Samohi’s Jordan Mathews, who did a little of everything recording 17 points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist in round one of the playoffs. Like all the greats, Mathews adjusts his play to the needs of his team. Of his 17 points, Mathews scored 13 of them in the first half. After putting on a scoring clinic he shifted his focus to defense. “I honed-in on defense today, I tried to be as intense on defense as on offense,” said Mathews. The Moors were left reeling from this intensity, as they only managed to score 18 points in the first half and even less in the second. Alhambra was unable to find any rhythm offensively and ran their game through

ting the big time. Students from over 60 L.A. schools, ages 8 to 18, are honored with the opportunity to perform a special concert at the historic venue. “When I realized this was an actual performance, and that the public would be buying tickets to see it, I couldn’t believe it. Some professionals don’t even get to do this,” said 15-year-old oboe player Iden Ameri, a student at Santa Monica High

business despite bad reviews for the latest installment, which sends Willis’ McClane to Moscow in search of his estranged son, an undercover spy who winds up teaming with the old man against Russian bad guys. The movie’s success follows notable flops from two other holdovers of the 1980s action scene, Sylvester Stallone with “Bullet to the Head” and Arnold Schwarzenegger with “The Last Stand.” “There’s still life left in the ‘Die Hard’ franchise. Given the fact that pretty much every other R-rated action movie that’s come out this year has completely fallen flat, this is a pretty good showing,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. Willis is “one of the old-guard action stars who still has a solid career going, whereas a lot of these aging action heroes, unless they’re in an ensemble cast, they’re not able to draw
LOS ANGELES Hyla Merin grew up without a father and for a long time never knew why. Her mother never spoke about the Army officer who died before Hyla was born. The scraps of information she gathered from other relatives were hazy: 2nd Lt. Hyman Markel was a rabbi’s son, brilliant at mathematics, the brave winner of a Purple Heart who died sometime in 1945. Aside from wedding photos of Markel in uniform, Merin never glimpsed him. But on Sunday, decades after he won it, Merin received her father’s Purple Heart, along with a Silver Star she never knew he’d won and a half-dozen other medals. Merin wiped away tears as the Silver Star was pinned to her lapel during a short ceremony attended by friends and family at her home in Westlake Village, a community straddling the Ventura and Los Angeles county lines. The other medals were presented on a plaque. “It just confirms what a great man he was,” Merin said tearfully. “He gave up his life for our country and our freedom. I’ll put it up in my house as a memorial to him and to those who served.” Merin’s mother, Celia, married Markel in 1941 when he already was in the military. They met at a Jewish temple in Buffalo, N.Y. About four months ago, the manager of a West Hollywood apartment building where Merin’s mother lived in the 1960s found a box containing papers and the Purple Heart while cleaning out some lockers in the laundry room, Merin said. The manager contacted Purple Hearts Reunited, a nonprofit organization that returns lost or stolen medals to vets or their families. A search led to Merin. She became “kind of emotional, because I don’t have a lot of pictures, I don’t have a lot of stories, and I’ve always been a crier,” she said. “My mother was always the stoic one, very strong.” Markel was killed in the last days of World War II on May 3, 1945, in Italy’s Po Valley while fighting German troops as an officer with the 88th Division of the 351st Infantry Regiment, said Zachariah Fike, the Vermont Army National Guard captain who founded Purple Hearts Reunited.

Willis’ new ‘Die Hard’ scores with $25M debut DAVID GERMAIN AP Movie Writer
LOS ANGELES Bruce Willis remains a diehard at the box office. Willis’ action sequel “A Good Day to Die Hard” debuted as the weekend’s top draw with a $25 million debut from Friday to Sunday. The 20th Century Fox release raised its domestic total to $33.2 million since opening Thursday for Valentine’s Day to get a jump on the long President’s Day weekend. The movie comes 25 years after the original “Die Hard” and six years after “Live Free or Die Hard,” the hit that resurrected the franchise centered on Willis’ relentless New York City cop John McClane. The previous weekend’s No. 1 movie, Universal’s comedy “Identity Thief ” starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, was a close second with $23.4 million to lift its haul to $70.7 million. Debuting at No. 3 with $21.4 million was
Relativity Media’s romance “Safe Haven,” starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel in an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a woman who flees her abusive husband and takes up with a sensitive widower. Since opening on Valentine’s Day, “Safe Haven” has taken in $30.3 million. The Weinstein Co. animated tale “Escape from Planet Earth” opened at No. 4 with $16.1 million. With a voice cast that includes Brendan Fraser, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rob Corddry, the movie follows the adventures of aliens captured by the U.S. military. Making a weak debut at No. 6 was the Warner Bros. teen fantasy “Beautiful Creatures,” which pulled in $7.5 million for the weekend and $10 million since opening Thursday. The movie is based on the first in the best-selling series about a Southern misfit (Alden Ehrenreich) who falls under the spell of a teen witch (Alice Englert). “A Good Day to Die Hard” did solid

new six-acre park under construction in the Civic Center is a big deal at City Hall. I thought “Palisades Garden Walk” was a good name. You’d think that a “world class park” in a “world class Civic Center” in a “world class city” would have a name with a nice ring to it, imparting a touch of class and that was stylishly descriptive. Palisades Garden Walk filled the bill just fine for me. Never content to leave well enough alone, the City Council ordered staff to undertake a time-consuming and expensive process by inviting the public submission of names and making a big production of it — worthy of a $50 million park. Names ran the gamut from silly to inspired. But, it didn’t take long before the whole process became City Hall’s latest exercise in correcting centuries old injustices while doing some social engineering, too. There are a couple of well organized lobbying groups who backed naming the park for their Native American forbearers who lived here centuries ago before the coming of Europeans. As with “all things in Santa Monica,” there’s a disagreement between various groups or factions and their supporters — like the “for-profit” Gabrielino groups (with casino interests) and the “nonprofit” Gabrielino supporters. The City Council heard everyone’s point of view last Tuesday night. Some factions eschew much of the present history of indigenous peoples because it was written by Europeans, not natives. However, Wikipedia lists four different tribal groups now claiming to represent the Gabrielino nation — each with its own agenda and take on the region’s indigenous history. Archeologist Dr. Gary Stickel, with some 40-plus years of academic level experience in studying local tribes, told the council that the real name was Kizh (Kij: meaning settlers) and that Tongva was not a tribal name at all but “a place where seeds were ground.” At some point after the Mission period, Kizh-Gabrielino, Gabrielino, San Gabriel Indians and Kizh (Nation) gave way to Tongva. One speaker told the council that the current leader of the San Gabrielino Band of Mission Indians, Chief Red Blood Anthony Morales, had confirmed that Tongva was now an acceptable designation for the native tribes that lived in this area. Somehow “Kizh Park” didn’t make the cut even though it may be the most historically accurate name to use if honoring indigenous inhabitants of the area. We all know the powers at City Hall won’t let a broad interpretation of history get in the way of naming anything which is why we have signs on the Santa Monica Pier saying that it’s the “End of the Road” for Route 66 when its real terminus is the unsightly corner at Olympic and Lincoln boulevards. I love the way our city politicians also social engineer everything. Councilwoman Gleam Davis thought it was “a spectacular learning opportunity”

because the Tongva name would inspire tourists and others to learn about the peoples who lived here. Never mind that Tongva isn’t an exciting name unless you’re a person of Gabrielino or Kizh ancestry. It’s more of a head-scratcher. Just think how smug you’ll feel when someone asks you, “What’s a Tongva?” -— and I’m sure a few tourists might — and you can inform them about a place to grind seeds as well as about the Kizh and Tonga tribal names. Some speakers reminded the council about the decimation of indigenous peoples by European invaders and claimed that it was important for social justice to be served and avoid another Indian genocide by honoring their ancestors by naming a significant place in Santa Monica after them. Oh, brother. But, just a block away from Tongva Park is Moomat Ahiko, a street that runs under the Santa Monica Pier ramp and connects Ocean Avenue to Appian Way. Moomat Ahiko is Tongva for “breath of the ocean.” Political correctness has won out again. I believe that remembering our history by honoring the area’s original inhabitants is proper and important, But, I’m not sure if this was the best time and place to do it.

There may be lots of excitement around Santa Monica High School next Monday morning. Last week, this newspaper reported (”Controversial church plans to teach Samohi a lesson,” Feb. 14, page 1) that members of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church were planning to come to Santa Monica and teach “high schoolers the truth.” Westboro members are famous for their “God hates fags” demonstrations at military funerals and major public events such as the Academy Awards. Words can’t describe how contemptible and loathsome I think these people and their messages are. Santa Monica police and school officials received advance notice of the protest. I’m assuming these haters routinely notify authorities they’re coming to town. It’s a strategy to secure police protection for them, assure that their disgusting demonstration goes on as planned and that their First Amendment rights to free speech are protected. Feelings are running high on the possibility of a hateful event. Keep in mind that an ugly incident will attract worldwide media attention which is exactly what these homophobes want. Be smart. Don’t help them spread the hate. I say, “Ignore ‘em like you’d ignore a piece of dog poo on the sidewalk.” Haters only succeed in spreading their repulsive message when they can get a reaction which generates press coverage which, in turn, spreads their despicable anti-gay efforts far beyond Samohi. CHELYABINSK, Russia As a small army of people worked to replace acres of windows shattered by the enormous explosion from a meteor, many joked on Saturday about what had happened in this troubled pocket of Russia. One of the most popular jests: Residents of the meteor were terrified to see Chelyabinsk approaching. The fireball that streaked into the sky over this tough industrial city at about sunrise Friday was undeniably traumatic. Nearly 1,200 people were reported injured by the shock wave from the explosion, estimated to be as strong as 20 Hiroshima atomic bombs. But it also brought a sense of cooperation in a troubled region. Large numbers of volunteers came forward to help fix the damage caused by the explosion and many residents came together on the Internet — first to find out what happened and soon to make jokes. Chelyabinsk, nicknamed Tankograd because it produced the famed Soviet T-34 tanks, can be as grim as its backbone heavy industries. Long winters where temperatures routinely hit minus-30 Celsius (minus-22 Fahrenheit) add to a general dour mien, as do worries about dangerous facilities in the surrounding region. In 1957, a waste tank at the Mayak nuclear weapons plant in the Chelyabinsk region exploded, contaminating 23,000 square kilometers (9,200 square miles) and prompting authorities to evacuate 10,000 nearby residents. It is now Russia’s main nuclear waste disposal facility. A vast plant for disposing of chemical weapons lies 85 kilometers (50 miles) east of the city. “The city is a place where people always seem bitter with each other,” said music teacher Ilya Shibanov. But the meteor “was one of the rare times when people started to live together through one event.” “For most people, it’s a good excuse for a joke,” he said. It also is why Shibanov quickly concocted a rap video that got wide Internet attention, including the lines: “”Pow, pow, pow — everything flew and factory windows crumbled. This Friday the bars are going to be full, so be ready for the aftermath.” But for many, it’s provided a reason to roll up their sleeves and get to work repairing the more than 4,000 buildings in the city and region where windows were shattered, or to provide other services.
More than 24,000 people, including volunteers, have mobilized in the region to cover windows, gather warm clothes and food, and make other relief efforts, the regional governor’s office said. Crews from glass companies in adjacent regions were being flown in. Gov. Mikhail Yurevich on Saturday said that damage from the high-altitude explosion —believed to have been as powerful as 20 Hiroshima bombs — is estimated at 1 billion rubles ($33 million). He promised to have all the broken windows replaced within a week. But that is a long wait in a frigid region. The midday temperature in Chelyabinsk was minus-12 C (10 F), and for many the immediate task was to put up plastic sheeting and boards on shattered residential windows. Meanwhile, the search continued for major fragments of the meteor. In the town of Chebarkul, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Chelyabinsk city, divers explored the bottom of an ice-crusted lake looking for meteor fragments believed to have fallen there, leaving a six-meter-wide (20-foot-wide) hole. Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius told Russian news agencies the search hadn’t found anything. Police kept a small crowd of curious onlookers from venturing out onto the icy lake, where a tent was set up for the divers. Many of them were still trying to process the memories of the strange day they’d lived through. Valery Fomichov said he had been out for a run when the meteor streaked across the sky shortly after sunrise. “I glanced up and saw a glowing dot in the west. And it got bigger and bigger, like a soccer ball, until it became blindingly white and I turned away,” he said. In a local church, clergyman Sexton Sergei sought to derive a larger lesson. “Perhaps God was giving a kind of sign, so that people don’t simply think about their own trifles on earth, but rather look to the heavens once in a while.” In Chelyabinsk, university student Ksenia Arslanova said she was pleased that people in the city of 1 million generally behaved well after the bewildering flash and explosions. “People were kind of ironic about it. And that’s a good thing, that people didn’t run to the grocery store. Everyone was calm,” the 19-year-old architecture student said. “I’m proud that our city didn’t fall into depression.”

POSSIBLY TOXIC: When Teflon is exposed to high heat it can release its constituent chemical, PFOA, as a gas. There are no known cases of direct health problems for consumers, but workers producing Teflon are at increased risk for certain cancers, prompting the U.S. government to call for a complete phase-out of Teflon and related products by 2015.
Sticky issue Dear EarthTalk: I’ve read conflicting reports about the dangers of non-stick cookware. I have a set of older non-stick pans and am not sure if I need to replace them. Are they harmful to use, particularly if they have a few scratches?
— Miriam Jones, Montgomery, Ala
It may be time to upgrade your pans, given that the U.S. government has called for a complete phase-out of polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE, otherwise known as Teflon) and related products by 2015, due to health concerns. When Teflon is exposed to high heat it can degrade, which causes it to release its constituent chemical, PFOA, as a gas. This phenomenon can kill pet birds, and can’t be good for humans either. While there are no known cases of airborne PFOA causing direct health problems for consumers, workers in plants where Teflon has been produced are at increased risk for cancers of the pancreas and the male reproductive tract. “Numerous studies have shown that PFOA alters reproductive hormones in the male, causing increased levels of estrogen and abnormal testosterone regulation and that PFOA or chemicals that break down into PFOA damage the thyroid gland,” reports Melissa Breyer of the website Care2. Breyer adds that four organs or tissues in the immune system and at least nine types of cells that regulate immune function are targets of PFOA, and that scientists have been unable to find a level of PFOA that doesn’t damage the immune system: “Doses given to effected lab animals were minimal-and less, relatively, than levels found in children.” The fact that PFOA exposure led to testicular, pancreatic, mammary and liver tumors in rats doesn’t bode well for what the chemical may do to humans.
Of course, the risk of exposure is much lower for a person frying an egg at home than for a factory worker manufacturing PTFE for DuPont. In 2007, Consumer Reports Magazine tested PTFE-based nonstick pans from several manufacturers and found harmful airborne emissions of PFOA to be minimal. “The highest level was about 100 times lower than levels that animal studies suggest are of concern for ongoing exposure to PFOA,” reported the magazine. “With the aged pans, emissions were barely measurable.” Some manufacturers are working on safer non-stick cookware using ceramic or silicone coatings free of PTFE or PFOA. But a 2009 survey of eight such alternatives by Cook’s Illustrated magazine did not identify any of the new choices out there high marks. “Not a single one of these ‘green’ pans was without flaws,” said the magazine. “In some, delicate eggs burned, thin fish fillets stuck, and steak charred on the outside while remaining raw within. Others stained or transferred heat inconsistently.” Some pans accumulated the browned bits known as fond when steak was seared, indicating unwanted sticking power. Many foodies have resigned themselves to the likelihood that the idea of a non-stick pan might in and of itself be too good to be true. As such, cast iron, aluminum, copper and stainless steel each rate high for even heat distribution and for holding up well at high temperatures and frequent use. Used properly-such as by employing a little oil or butter to inhibit food from sticking-such pans can last decades. Submerged superstorm debris threatens tourism WAYNE PARRY Associated Press
MANTOLOKING, N.J. On the surface, things look calm and placid. Just beneath the waterline, however, it’s a different story. Cars and sunken boats. Patio furniture. Pieces of docks. Entire houses. A grandfather clock, deposited in a marsh a mile from solid land. Hot tubs. Tons of sand. All displaced by Superstorm Sandy. “We did a cleanup three weeks ago. Then when we went back the other day, you could still see junk coming up in the wash,” said Paul Harris, president of the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association, which helps take care of beaches on which the group goes surf fishing. “They go and clean it again, and two days later, you have the same thing again. There’s nothing you can do about it; you can’t vacuum the ocean.” Coastal areas of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut are racing to remove untold tons of debris from waters hardest hit by the Oct. 29 storm before the summer swimming and boating seasons begin — two of the main reasons people flock there each year and the underpinning of the region’s multibillion-dollar tourist industry. The sunken debris presents an urgent safety issue. Swimmers could cut themselves on submerged junk, step on one of thousands of boardwalk nails ripped loose, or suffer neck or spinal injuries diving into solid objects. Boats could hit debris, pitching their occupants overboard, or in severe cases, sinking. The cleanup won’t be easy, fast or cheap. “The amount of debris that needs to be removed is mind-boggling,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said, ticking off the statistics in his state: 1,400 vessels sunk, broken loose or destroyed during the storm. In just one shore town alone, Mantoloking, 58 buildings were washed into Barnegat Bay, along with eight vehicles, and a staggering amount of sand carried from the ocean beaches into the bay. “Everything you can imagine is sitting in our waterways,” he said. Barnegat Bay is likely to have some no-go zones in place for at least part of the spring and summer as cleanup work progresses. “Big Al” Wutkowski, a locally famous striped-bass fisherman who volunteers as the Barnegat Bay Guardian for the American Littoral Society environmental group, is worried about what still lurks beneath the waves. “When people start putting their boats back in the water in April, I know they’re going to start hitting stuff,” he said. “It’s impossible not to hit stuff. It’s also a lot shallower in places now. A lot of the lagoons are filled in with sand. People can’t get their boats in or out.” Florida-based contractor AshBritt Environmental removed 42 boats from New Jersey waterways in recent weeks. Others were corralled by the State Police, or by private salvage companies acting on behalf of owners. Property owners are not being held financially responsible for debris that washed or blew off their property into waterways unless they hire a private company to retrieve a boat they plan to repair and keep, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection. The state, which issue contracts last week for the water cleanup work, plans to seek full reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of $60 billion in Sandy relief approved by Congress. Much of the work will involve cranes atop barges that pluck the largest debris from the
bottom. Divers could be used for smaller pieces. Once that’s done, many waterways will need to be dredged, with the sand placed back on beaches. The private owners of an amusement pier that collapsed in Seaside Heights, N.J., pitching the Jet Star roller coaster into the ocean, are working with insurers to devise a plan to dismantle the ride and get it out of the ocean. Seaside Heights also plans to send teams of divers to scour the ocean bottom in popular swimming areas before letting people back into the water, fearing parts of the wooden pier, metal pieces from boardwalk rides and other debris still linger in the ocean. Cars from the pier’s amusement rides were found on beaches as far as 8 miles away in the days after the storm. The Polar Bear Plunge, in which swimmers briefly dash into and out of the frigid surf to raise money for charity, was moved this year from Seaside Heights to Long Branch, a beach 24 miles to the north where hidden debris wasn’t a concern. New York and Connecticut face similar problems. “We have everything from floating oil barrels, gasoline tanks, household hazardous waste products, buckets, tires, bathtubs, you name it,” said Adrienne Esposito, executive director of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment on Long Island. “We’re concerned not only about pollution, but boater safety,” she said. “Come the spring, this stuff is going to be submerged partially or totally, but the boats are going to have some very serious issues.” Rob Weltner, president of Operation Splash, said the Freeport, N.Y., volunteer group has spent the past 20 years collecting 1 million pounds of debris, mostly from waterways on the south shore of Long Island. “Twenty years is out the window,” he said. “Gone, gone. Sandy hit us right at the time when we would normally be putting the finishing touches on our cleanups. Every place I look I go, ‘Oh, my God, not again, man. We just had that place looking beautiful and it’s going to take us another 10 or 15 years to get it back looking decent again.” Among the items found by the group since Sandy are hot tubs, floating docks, damaged boats, barbecue grills, patio furniture, umbrellas, hundreds of trash cans and the grandfather clock. Crews in Hempstead, N.Y., have removed 379 tons of debris from waterways since Sandy hit. Neighboring Babylon has retrieved 50 tons, including two tool sheds fully intact, with tools still inside, and 24 destroyed boats. Fairfield, Conn., needs to remove debris left in marshlands by the storm, including bicycles, picnic tables and backyard furniture, said First Selectman Michael Tetreau. The town is waiting to use special equipment from the state to remove the debris without harming the marshes. Fairfield also saw significant beach erosion and needs to dredge its harbor and marina because sand was pushed into the waterways. Tetreau doubts the work will be done before Memorial Day, and said there may be limits on boat traffic. In Brick, N.J., the lagoon on which Mayor Stephan Acropolis lives is filled with junk, including the front door and part of a wall from one of three houses that burned during the storm. Also in the lagoon are a kids’ picnic table, a 50-gallon plastic barrel holding who-knows-what, and two docks from homes two blocks away.

Merin was 10 but her stepfather died three years later, Merin said. Her mother moved into the apartment in 1960 and may have placed the Purple Heart in the locker then, Merin said. Her mother lived there until 1975 before moving away, and Merin’s aunt lived there until 2005. Another aunt lived there until 2009. They never spoke about what was in the locker, and the family must have missed the box when they took away the aunts’ possessions in 2005 and 2009, Merin said. Merin said that in addition to the Purple Heart, which Pike kept for framing, the box contained letters and other papers, and her father’s Jewish prayer book. “I found it very hard to look at. A lot of them were condolence letters,” she said. Merin’s mother was told about the discovery of the Purple Heart but didn’t live to see it — she died Feb. 1 at age 94. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

FOOD FROM PAGE 1 Of course, there’s a premium to even supermarket philanthropy. FreeHand costs around $40 for a 15-pound bag of food and almost $65 for a 25-pound bag, putting it squarely in the filet mignons of the dog chow world in terms of price. That’s certainly a challenge amid an economic climate marked by anemic growth, but one that loyal consumers overcome when they realize what they’re buying — the life of a dog they will probably never meet. In fact, consumers wouldn’t trust it if they didn’t have to stretch their wallets farther. “Focus groups are what gave us confidence,” Bagamane said. “They said, ‘If we don’t pay more, there’s a catch, a gotcha moment.’” Bagamane knows what he’s talking about. After 30 years in various aspects of the consumer products business and with some significant nonprofit credentials under his belt, marrying the two seemed almost a natural progression. It may be easier to do in the pet market, which continues to be a growth industry even during the downturn, than other projects that bear Bagamane’s fingerprints, like Giving Spirit, an all-volunteer operation that distributes survival kits to children, women and families living on the streets of Los Angeles. Bagamane founded a pet toy company in 2006 that was bought by a larger, privatelyheld company. He stayed for a few years to learn the ropes of the industry and discovered a salient fact. “The pet food product business is recession-proof,” Bagamane said. People will continue to care for their pets even when they must cut back on things for
We have you covered themselves, he found. Add in the charitable component of feeding other hungry, local dogs and the idea seemed fated for success. Tom Kavanaugh agreed. Kavanaugh is the CEO of Relativity Media, the company responsible for movies like the recently-released “Safe Haven” and “Frost/Nixon.” He and his wife Britta LazengaKavanaugh, along with other partners, announced that they had purchased FreeHand just last week for an undisclosed amount. The Kavanaughs have a passion for saving dogs — they have five rescues of their own — but it wasn’t until FreeHand that they found a way to make their philanthropy selfsustaining. “We’re building a business that’s self-sustaining, combats euthanasia and feeds the best food. Put those together and you have a good business,” Kavanaugh said. It didn’t hurt that premium pet food has been one of the only industries to post 10 percent gains each year since 2007, Kavanaugh said. According to a report by Transparency Market Research, the American pet food market was worth $21.7 billion in 2011 and is forecast to hit $26.6 billion by 2017. Dry pet foods like FreeHand account for 39 percent of that market, which is populated by a range of products offering different price points. With new capital and awards for taste and quality lining up behind the young company, it’s already been voted one of the top 25 companies to watch in 2013 by Pet Product News International. Bagamane hopes that translates into sales, both for his bottom line and those of area shelters. “We can’t save dogs unless we sell food,” he said. ashley@smdp.com

COOL KIDS: Students from Santa Monica will be playing with the L.A. Youth Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.
NYC FROM PAGE 1 audition tapes of the youth orchestra in action. Manhattan Concert Production received the tape and booked the concert at Carnegie. “I wanted to create this opportunity for the orchestra. I felt that last year’s orchestra had improved so much and we had never toured before. I had an image of us performing at Carnegie Hall,” Steinberg said. The students of the orchestra have a long line of music knowledge as some started playing their instruments at a very young age. “When I was 6, my family and I were on a trip to Ireland, we were on a mountain top and I saw a performer,” 16-year-old New Roads violinist Mica Nafshun-Bone said. “I was amazed by her presence. She was fiddling and I thought it was really impressive so I started begging my mom for a violin and I decided to stick with it … . I’m glad I did.” The performance in NYC is being held in honor of the orchestra’s late program director and viola coach, Eve Cohen. Cohen passed away from cancer in October but her memory lives on through the 75 orchestra students and alumni who will play together that night. “Eve was not only my colleague, she was also a fabulous violist,” Steinberg said. “When she passed, I conceived writing a
piece especially for her so that she’d be with us.” Steinberg will premiere his piece “Eve Star” with the orchestra as a tribute to Cohen. “The piece sounds a little nostalgic and it ends quietly with the violas playing the last note by themselves. I wanted Eve to have the last word,” Steinberg said. The performance will take place Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in Carnegie Hall’s main space, Stern Auditorium. The Los Angeles Youth Orchestra is being given half the show, sharing the other half with other youth orchestras from all over the country. “Being in this orchestra has been an essential step in my musical career… . And since this orchestra goes from ages 8 to 18, I’m probably going to stay until I graduate,” 11-year-old violinist Grace Alexander said. “And most of the kids who are in the orchestra are going to do that. You have to have a real commitment. This is pretty much your whole life and it’s worth it.” Tickets for this concert are available at carnegiehall.org or at the box office. The Los Angeles Youth Orchestra will be playing a local concert at UCLA Schoenberg Hall at 4 p.m. on April 14 and at Zipper Hall at The Colburn School in Downtown L.A. at 7:30 p.m. on April 15. VATICAN CITY His arms outstretched in a symbolic embrace, Pope Benedict XVI blessed tens of thousands of cheering people on Sunday in one of his last appearances as pontiff from his window overlooking St. Peter’s Square. Last week, 85-year-old Benedict shocked the world by announcing his resignation. He will step down on Feb. 28, planning to retreat to a life of prayer in a monastery behind the Vatican’s ancient walls. The noontime appointment in the vast cobblestone square also served as a kind of trial run for how Rome will handle the logistics, including crowd security, as the city braces for faithful to flock to Rome for the election and installation of the cardinal who will succeed Benedict as leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics. Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno said upward of 100,000 people turned out Sunday and that everything went smoothly. But while there was still space in St. Peter’s Square for more, many couldn’t get in — or easily out — because entrances from the main boulevard were just too narrow. The huge crowd — including parents with babies in carriages and strollers, elderly people using canes, and the disabled in wheelchairs — tried to squeeze through two spaces police left open in the metal barricades edging the square. Some people panicked or called out to police to help them get in or out of the square. Pilgrims and tourists had an easier time if they entered through spaces in the elegant colonnade that architect Gianlorenzo Bernini designed to cradle the sides of the St. Peter’s Square. Benedict seemed touched by the outpouring of affection after his decision to go down in history as the first pontiff in some 600 years to resign. The pontiff told cardinals last week that he no longer has the mental and physical stamina to vigorously shepherd the church. Looking into hazy sunshine Sunday, he smiled shyly at the sight of the crowd below, filled with pilgrims waving their countries’ flags and holding up banners with words of support. One group of Italians raised a banner which read: “We love you.” Speaking in Italian, the pope told the cheering crowd: “Thanks for turnout in such numbers! This, too, is a sign of the affection and the spiritual closeness that you are giving me in these days.” He stretched out his arms as if to embrace the faithful from across the vast expanse of the square. Benedict made no direct reference to his departure. But in his comments to Spanishspeaking pilgrims he asked the faithful to “continue praying for me and for the next pope.” The traditional Sunday window appearance normally attracts a few thousand pilgrims and tourists, but this time city officials prepared for as many as 150,000 people seeking to witness one of Benedict’s last opportunities to connect with the masses. Authorities also used the event as a kind of trial run for the crowds expected to flock to the square in the coming weeks for the next pope’s installation. Following tradition, Benedict’s successor will make his first papal appearance by stepping onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on the square, shortly after puffs of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney tell the world the cardinals have made their secret selection.
On Sunday, extra buses and subway trains ran from Rome’s train stations to near the Vatican, and free shuttle vans offered lifts to the elderly or disabled. Mayor Alemanno has asked Italy’s government to put aside its austerity agenda and give Rome a few million euros (dollars) to help pay for security, garbage pickup and other logistics for the Vatican crowds. On Sunday, several in the crowd were exhausted and shaken by their attempts to get into the square between the metal barriers. “You can’t invite thousands of people and then bottleneck the entrance and exit to the square,” said Gianbattista Di Rese, an Italian among the distressed. “Imagine if someone had had a bomb. There could have been hundreds of dead.” He got into the square but was stymied trying to get out. Tourists must go through metal detectors before entering St. Peter’s Basilica, but there is no such security to stroll the square. An Associated Press reporter saw many people give up. Some started to panic and yell at police to do something to ease the bottleneck. Those who arrived hours before the pope appeared could enter the square with ease for a chance to join in the show of support for him. “We wanted to wish him well,” said Amy Champion, a tourist from Wales. “It takes a lot of guts to take the job and even more guts ... to quit.” But some were dismayed that Benedict broke with the centuries-old tradition that popes serve till their last breath. A youth group Militia Christi (Latin for Christ’s Militia) held a hand-painted banner asking the pope to stay. “We are asking him to change his mind. He is the good of the church,” said youth GiovanBattista Varricchio. No decision has been announced on a date for the conclave to elect Benedict’s successor, but the Vatican has suggested that it might start sooner than March 15, the earliest date possible under current rules, which require a 15-20 day waiting period after the papacy becomes vacant. This has set off a debate whether such a change could be justified and whether it might benefit Romebased cardinals who because of their positions at the church’s headquarters can count on their acquaintance with cardinals around the world. “Church law should not be changed on a whim,” said the Rev. Thomas Reese, an American Vatican expert. He said changing law “would be disruptive.” On Sunday evening, the pope began a customary week of Lenten period reflection ahead of Easter, and his next public remarks won’t come until Feb. 24, when he returns for his final studio window appearance over the square. In his remarks to the throng Sunday, he told the faithful that during Lent “the church, which is mother and teacher, calls all its members to renew themselves in spirit, to reorient themselves decisively toward God, rejecting pride and egoism to live in love.” Benedict has chosen an Italian cardinal to preach to him and Vatican clergy during closed-door sessions in this week of meditation and prayer. The prelate, Gianfranco Ravasi, heads the Holy See’s culture office and is touted by some Vatican watchers as a leading candidate to be the next pope. But other observers contend he is heavily identified with one of the rival blocs of Italian prelates in the Vatican’s apparatus, which could hurt his chances.

Agent cancels all future contests for Pistorius GERALD IMRAY AP Sports Writer
JOHANNESBURG Oscar Pistorius’ track career was put on hold indefinitely Sunday because of his murder charge, reinforcing the possibility that the double-amputee Olympian and disabled sports icon might never run again competitively on his famous carbon fiber blades. Pistorius’ agent was forced to cancel all future races, he said, so Pistorius could concentrate on defending himself against allegations he murdered his model girlfriend by shooting her several times in his upscale house on Valentine’s Day morning. Reeva Steenkamp died from gunshot wounds suffered inside Pistorius’ home in the predawn hours of Thursday. Pistorius was arrested and charged with her murder the same day. His family denies he murdered her. “I have decided that following these tragic events that we have no option but to cancel all future races that Oscar Pistorius had been contracted to compete in,” agent Peet van Zyl said in a written statement late Sunday night. A few hours earlier, Van Zyl had visited his athlete at a police station in the South African capital, Pretoria, where he is being held in custody in a red-bricked, one-story building with green metal fencing. Pistorius has been there since Friday following the shocking developments at his villa in a gated community in Pretoria’s eastern suburbs where Steenkamp was shot dead. Her death and Pistorius’ arrest stunned South Africans, who revered Pistorius for his humble nature and success at overcoming adversity to become an international star, despite having his lower legs amputated as a baby. Pistorius still had “overwhelming support” from his fans, Van Zyl said as he left Brooklyn police station, but the agent steered away from a question from a reporter on what Pistorius’ emotional state was now like following the death of his girlfriend and a possible realization that his entire career was in ruins. Pistorius’ sponsors — including bigname brands Nike and eyewear manufacturer Oakley — were also sticking by him, Van Zyl said. But that could depend on the outcome of a possibly lengthy murder trial. “Regarding sponsors and partners, I can confirm that at this point in time, all parties are supportive and their contractual commitments are maintained,” Van Zyl’s In Site Athlete Management company said. “They have said they are happy to let the legal process takes its course before making any change in their position.” The Beaverton, Ore-based Nike Inc. and Foothill Ranch, Calif.-based Oakley Inc. did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press seeking comment. Pistorius was quickly arrested and charged with murder Thursday, with prosecutors saying at his first court appearance a day later that they would pursue a more serious premeditated murder charge, which car-
ries a life sentence. Pistorius broke down and wept in the court, with his face in his hands. His family later denied he murdered Steenkamp and said the state’s own evidence “strongly refutes” any possibility of a murder. “I am not going to comment on anything except that (what) is related to his athletics career at this point in time,” Van Zyl told reporters outside the police station after being asked how Pistorius was coping. “Obviously from a management side and also as a friend, it’s a tragic circumstance and events that have unfolded and we can only give Oscar our support at this point in time.” Family members and his lawyers also visited Pistorius on Sunday, but declined comment both when they arrived and when they left the city center police station. The family of Steenkamp, a model, law graduate and budding reality TV star, told The Associated Press that her body had been released by police after an autopsy and was back in their hometown of Port Elizabeth on South Africa’s southern coast. “Reeva is back home,” the late model’s brother, Adam Steenkamp, told the AP by phone. He had flown back from Britain, where he now lives, to be with the family. They also said Steenkamp’s funeral would be held Tuesday and would be a private ceremony for family at a local crematorium. Media would not be allowed in. The main purpose for Van Zyl’s visit to Brooklyn police station Sunday afternoon was to discuss Pistorius’ running career, but “also to visit him as a friend and give him my moral support,” the agent said. “On a personal level I wanted to offer my support to Oscar, who I have known and worked with for the last seven years and consider a friend and a great professional athlete.” Following the meeting, Van Zyl announced publicly that the five races that Pistorius had confirmed for in 2013 were canceled: two in Australia in March, exhibition races against fellow Paralympic champions Alan Oliveira of Brazil and Jonnie Peacock of Britain, and an appearance at the U.S. Drake Relays in Iowa. Van Zyl’s decision to cancel those races was first reported by the AP on Saturday. All others that were still in negotiation were also now called off, Van Zyl said on Sunday. The high-profile rematch with Oliveira, who beat Pistorius in the 200 meters at the London Paralympics last year, was to be a straight line 200 race on Copacabana beach to promote the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics. The runner’s main goal for 2013 was to qualify for the worlds in Moscow in August, which is now almost certainly not going to happen. Pistorius was the first amputee athlete to run at the world championships in 2011, then made history when he competed at last year’s Olympics in London. He and his coach have both said that they aimed to retire from track after the Rio Games, but one of the world’s most famous athletes, who fought for years to be allowed to run against able-bodied competitors, is now facing the possibility he will never go to any major meet again.

CHUCK
SHEPARD
■ An estimated 3.2 million kids aged 5 to 12 take mixed-martial arts classes, training to administer beatdowns modeled after the adults' Ultimate Fighting Championships, according to a January report in ESPN magazine, which profiled the swaggering, Mohawked Derek "Crazy" Rayfield, 11, and the meek, doll-clutching fighting machine, Regina "The Black Widow" Awana, 7. Kids under age 12 fight each other without regard to gender, and blows above the collarbone are always prohibited (along with attacks on the groin, kidneys and back). "Crazy" was described delivering merciless forearm chest smashes to a foe before the referee intervened, and the Black Widow won her match in less than a minute via arm-bar submission. Parental involvement appears to be of two types: either fear of their child's getting hurt or encouragement to be meaner. ■ Breaking Bad (and Quickly!): Tyrone Harris, 26, reported for his first shift at Dunkin' Donuts in Morristown, N.J., in January and received his name tag. Seven minutes later, according to police, he was on his way out the door with $2,100 from his supervisor's desk. (Apparently, the supervisor had opened his drawer a little too far when reaching for the name tag, giving Harris a glimpse of the cash.)
