THE CHILLY ISSUE
Young voters turned the tide for Brown’s Prop. 30 JULIET WILLIAMS Associated Press
SACRAMENTO, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown secured a convincing win for his tax initiative on last week’s ballot, thanks partly to
voters who might not seem like a natural constituency for the 74-year-old, lifelong politician — young voters. Those under 30 helped Brown win relatively easy passage for his Proposition 30, which will raise the statewide sales tax for four years and income taxes on high earners
for seven years. College students and the parents of school-age children had the most at stake with the initiative. If it failed, Brown and state lawmakers were poised to cut $6 billion from K-12 schools and higher education. Faced with the prospect of more tuition

CITY YARDS One by one, a second class of Santa Monica residents walked through a gauntlet of instructors from the fire and police departments, shaking hands and accepting a certificate of completion to the imaginary strains of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The graduation ceremony for Santa Monica’s second Community Emergency Response Team was rapid and efficient, similar to the training that each of the 26 individuals had received over the past three Saturdays at the City Yards. Much of it applies to the everyday life disasters like kitchen fires, water line breaks or minor home injuries. The rest painted a sobering picture of the reality that will face Santa Monica and Southern California in the event of a major catastrophe, the kind of thing people try to push to the back of their minds, comfortably shelved behind more acceptable stresses of life. After accepting the certificate and green backpack of disaster goodies, there were 50 trained CERT members in Santa Monica. The city needs more people to step up and learn how to care first for themselves, and then for their neighbors, family and friends, City Manager Rod Gould told the graduating class. Preparedness and basic knowledge combine to remove stress from the limited number of first responders like police officers and firefighters that will be able to mobilize in a sudden event. “You are what Colin Powell called ‘force

nation paid tribute to its members of the armed services Sunday, both with somber traditions such as a Virginia wreath-laying ceremony attended by President Barack Obama to honor those who didn’t make it back from active duty, and more lighthearted perks including red-carpet treatment at Las Vegas casinos for those who did. In California, a long legal case drew to a close as a war memorial cross that had been deemed unconstitutional was being resurrected Sunday in the Mojave desert, capping a landmark case for veterans fighting similar battles on public lands. Sunday marked the official commemoration of Veterans Day, but the federal holiday will be observed Monday. President Barack Obama laid the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Memorial Cemetery in Virginia and noted that this is the first Veterans Day in a decade with no American troops in Iraq, and that a decade of war in Afghanistan is coming to a close. In a speech at the Memorial Amphitheater, he said America will never forget the sacrifice made by its veterans and their families. “No ceremony or parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service,” the president said, adding that the country must commit every day “to serving you as well as you’ve served us.” He spoke of the Sept. 11 generation, “who stepped forward when the Towers fell, and in

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Santa Monica romps all over Templeton to advance BY DANIEL ARCHULETA Managing Editor
CORSAIR FIELD The game of football is played by 11 guys on each side all striving to make a difference. On Friday, one was certainly the difference as Santa Monica routed Templeton 44-0 on Friday to advance to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs where formidable Gardena Serra awaits. Samohi’s Jason King proved that the Vikings have more than one threat in the wide receiver corps by snagging three long scoring passes from quarterback Ryan Barbarin and later adding an interception return for another touchdown as he amassed an impressive stat sheet. “Once I did it once I knew that all I had to do was keep doing the same thing,” King said. “Now people know that we have more than one weapon.” King was referring to teammate Sebastian LaRue, who aided King’s effort by drawing double and triple teams all night that ripped the top of the Templeton defense off. Each of King’s three touchdown grabs came as he streaked past single coverage, leaving his man in his wake. This is the second straight year

WESTMINSTER, Calif. The first Vietnamese-American mayor of Westminster will earn just $900 a month, and the authority he holds in this Southern California city is limited. But as the incoming leader of a city in the heart of Little Saigon — the largest Vietnamese district outside Vietnam — Tri Ta’s election win this week has resonated across the Vietnamese diaspora. Already, Ta has been featured on Radio Free Asia, seen his name on Internet sites from Houston to Hanoi, and been invited to Northern California to speak to Vietnamese leaders in San Jose. Fellow Vietnamese-American politicians tell the Los Angeles Times that the 39-year-old Ta can expect to get requests to represent the Vietnamese beyond city limits. “You wear more hats, not just the hat of a representative who represents a district or a city,” said Van Tran, a former state assemblyman from Orange County. He said he was frequently asked to attend events in New York, Florida, Texas and even Europe and Australia because of his standing as a Vietnamese-American elected official. “In other Vietnamese-American communities, you have to understand there’s a thirst for their own Vietnamese representative,” Tran said. “They don’t have the know-how, and they’re asking us to share that with them.” Madison Nguyen, the vice mayor of San Jose, said she works up to 15 hours a day to keep up with the demands of being the first Vietnamese-American council member in her city, which has a large Vietnamese community.

Parking double talk Editor:
Our downtown area already has a serious traffic gridlock and parking problem. So why is the city even considering demolishing an existing parking structure to build a new massive movie theater on Fourth Street that will eliminate 344 public parking spaces downtown and create even more traffic gridlock? Sure, the developers and city claim that the public parking structure being rebuilt on Second Street will “almost” replace the 344 parking spaces lost because of the proposed new gigantic movie theater. But that’s a just load of nonsense. The Second Street structure was planned to be rebuilt with additional parking spaces long before the monster-sized movie theater was proposed. The city claimed it had to tear down the Second Street structure to add more parking spaces because more parking was desperately needed downtown. Is the city now telling us that those extra parking spaces really weren’t needed after all, or is it just talking out the other side of its mouth, again, to accommodate another developer? Just wondering.

TH E PROBLEM WITH A GEN ERAL
MANAGING EDITOR
presidential election is that tens of thousands of residents voting on federal or state offices and propositions don’t care about local issues or who’s running for City Council and school board. The results are often unfortunate. Santa Monica Patch interviewed local voters who admitted that local races were of no interest. One voter said he went, "eeny, meeny, miny, moe.” Others were “overwhelmed by the volume of political pamphlets stuffed into their mailboxes — like from Bill Bloomfield? With no clear-cut basis to chose candidates, many voters take the easy way out. Vote for nice sounding names, women, along party lines, pro-environment or use a list they’ve been given. When it comes to getting out the vote, Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) is the undisputed top dog. The 33year-old cabal controls every facet of local government including school board, college board, City Council and Rent Control Board. Local elections are decided when two to three hundred dues-paying SMRR members endorse candidates for all open offices at their annual convention in July. The endorsements are supplemented after the convention behind closed doors with additional nods from SMRR’s powerful steering committee. This year Ted Winterer and Gleam Davis were endorsed for City Council by the general membership while Tony Vazquez and Terry O’Day were added later. SMRR leaders vowed to differentiate between the methods of endorsement in their election materials this year. However, as in previous years, all endorsees were billed as “The SMRR Team” thus rendering rank and file endorsements worthless. SMRR’s success is in convincing renters (about two-thirds of the city’s voters) that their team is the only thing between them and higher rents and, heaven forbid, outright eviction. It’s complete nonsense because rent increases and evictions are governed by the city charter and the courts. However, the scare tactic is simple and effective. Many renter/voters vote with a list of SMRR candidates and measures in hand because they mistakenly think it’s in their best interest. Santa Monica voters elected all four SMRR endorsees for City Council. Most also don’t realize that SMRRbacked tax or bond measure costs are paid by the very tenants SMRR claims to protect or that SMRR’s endorsements are almost always based on agenda, party loyalty and cronyism. Smart, capable candidates not in SMRR’s inner circle have no chance while less desirable persons are elected way too often. It explains why both our school and city governance is so flawed. Education support groups, special interests and public safety unions all jump on SMRR’s bandwagon. To them “picking winners” is following SMRR’s lead. The developer-funded Santa Monicans United for a Responsible Future (SMURF) PAC spent $441,000 on campaign materials
supporting Gleam Davis, Shari Davis, Terry O’Day and Ted Winterer. But all their slick, color mailers didn’t achieve much. When the ballots were counted, Winterer, Gleam Davis and O’Day won but Shari Davis — not endorsed by SMRR — finished out of the money. While activists were watching for well funded developer-backed groups or Political Action Committees (PACs) pushing prodevelopment candidates, they were either unaware or didn’t care that another outside influence was about to seize control of our election for its own purpose. UNITE HERE! Local 11. The hotel union was back — and in a big way. They were a major factor in SMRR’s victory. Top level union leaders and organizers from all over the country flocked here to run SMRR’s campaign. An army of hotel workers along with paid and non-paid volunteers and Santa Monica College students walked precincts urging everyone to vote SMRR. In return, SMRR-endorsed council persons are expected to “OK” new hotel projects and require both new and existing non-union hotel managements to approve card checks. The card check agreement requires recognition of the union when it collects signed cards from a simple majority of hotel employees. The agreement fast tracks the unionization process and makes it easier for the union to grow. The union’s involvement even included campaigning for school board incumbents Ben Allen, Jose Escarce and Maria LeonVazquez. The Doubletree Hotel’s lease on district property adjacent to Santa Monica High School is up for renewal in the coming months. The union expects Allen, Escarce and Leon-Vazquez to insist on card checks and generous wage packages as a requirement for any new lease arrangement — something that they wouldn’t get if the three challengers from Malibu won — especially Seth Jacobson who was retained by local hotels to fight the union’s living wage efforts in the early/mid 2000s. Don’t expect a change in present policies with either the school board or new council. Neighborhood activists will have to monitor development and other key issues very closely. One project, not yet on the Planning Department case list, is a high-end, “world class hotel” on the present Holiday Inn site at Colorado and Ocean avenues. Preliminary reports indicate FelCor Lodging Trust wants to build three towers, one of them 195 feet (or 17 floors) tall. They hope to begin the Development Agreement process early in January of 2013. Maybe this is the luxury “Frank Gehry-designed hotel project” I’ve been hearing rumors about for months As long as SMRR maintains their grip on the throat of local governance, elected officials will do what they, outside interests or what SMRR leaders want. There’s little the rest of us can do but complain because there’s no real desire or effort to beat the SMRR machine at the polls where it counts. BILL can be reached at mr.bilbau@gmail.com

and antibiotics in your produce, meat, and dairy foods? Prefer to pay more to make sure farm animals were treated humanely, farmworkers got their lunch breaks, bees or birds were protected by the farmer and that ranchers didn’t kill predators? Food labels claim to certify a wide array of sustainable practices. Hundreds of socalled eco-labels have cropped up in recent years, with more introduced every month — and consumers are willing to pay extra for products that feature them. While eco-labels can play a vital role, experts say their rapid proliferation and lack of oversight or clear standards have confused both consumers and producers. “Hundreds of eco labels exist on all kinds of products, and there is the potential for companies and producers to make false claims,” said Shana Starobin, a food label expert at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment. Eco-labels have multiplied in recent years in response to rising consumer demand for more information about products and increased attention to animal and farmworker welfare, personal health, and the effects of conventional farming on the environment. “Credible labels can be very helpful in helping people get to what they want to get to and pay more for something they really care about,” said Urvashi Rangan, director of consumer safety at Consumer Reports. “The labels are a way to bring the bottom up and force whole industries to improve their practices.” The problem, Rangan and other said, is that few standards, little oversight and a lot of misinformation exist for the growing array of labels. Some labels, such as the USDA organic certification, have standards set by the federal government to which third party certifiers must adhere. Some involve non-government standards and third-party certification, and may include site visits from independent auditors who evaluate whether a given farm or company has earned the label. But other labels have little or no standards, or are certified by unknown organizations or by self-interested industry groups. Many labels lack any oversight. And the problem is global, because California’s products get sold overseas and fruits and vegetables from Europe or Mexico with their own eco-labels make it onto U.S. plates. The sheer number of labels and the lack of oversight create a credibility problem and
risk rendering all labels meaningless and diluting demand for sustainably produced goods, Rangan said. Daniel Mourad of Fresno, a young professional who likes to cook and often shops for groceries at Whole Foods, said he tends to be wary of judging products just by the labels — though sustainable practices are important to him. “Labels have really confused the public. Some have good intentions, but I don’t know if they’re really helpful,” Mourad said. “Organic may come from Chile, but what does it mean if it’s coming from 6,000 miles away? Some local farmers may not be able to afford a label.” In California, voters this week rejected a ballot measure that would have required labels on foods containing genetically modified ingredients. Farmers like Gena Nonini in Fresno County say labels distinguish them from the competition. Nonini’s 100-acre Marian Farms, which grows grapes, almonds, citrus and vegetables, is certified biodynamic and organic, and her raisins are certified kosher. “For me, the certification is one way of educating people,” Nonini said. “It opens a venue to tell a story and to set yourself apart from other farmers out there.” But other farmers say they are reluctant to spend money on yet another certification process or to clutter their product with too much packaging and information. “I think if we keep adding all these new labels, it tends to be a pile of confusion,” said Tom Willey of TD Willey Farms in Madera, Calif. His 75-acre farm, which grows more than 40 different vegetable crops, carries USDA organic certification, but no other labels. The proliferation of labels, Willey said, is a poor substitute for “people being intimate with the farmers who grow their food.” Instead of seeking out more labels, he said, consumers should visit a farmers’ market or a farm, and talk directly to the grower. Since that’s still impossible for many urbanites, Consumer Reports has developed a rating system, a database and a web site for evaluating environmental and food labels — one of several such guides that have popped up recently to help consumers. The guides show that labels such as “natural” and “free range” carry little meaning, because they lack clear standards or a verification system. Despite this, consumers are willing to pay more for “free range” eggs and poultry, and studies show they value “natural” over “organic,” which is governed by lengthy federal regulations.

A land without trees Dear EarthTalk: Is it true that cutting and burning trees adds more global warming pollution to the atmosphere than all the cars and trucks in the world combined?
— Mitchell Vale, Houston, Texas
By most accounts, deforestation in tropical rainforests adds more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than the sum total of cars and trucks on the world’s roads. According to the World Carfree Network (WCN), cars and trucks account for about 14 percent of global carbon emissions, while most analysts attribute upwards of 15 percent to deforestation. The reason that logging is so bad for the climate is that when trees are felled they release the carbon they are storing into the atmosphere, where it mingles with greenhouse gases from other sources and contributes to global warming accordingly. The upshot is that we should be doing as much to prevent deforestation as we are to increase fuel efficiency and reduce automobile usage. According to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading green group, 32 million acres of tropical rainforest were cut down each year between 2000 and 2009-and the pace of deforestation is only increasing. “Unless we change the present system that rewards forest destruction, forest clearing will put another 200 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere in coming decades…,” says EDF. “Any realistic plan to reduce global warming pollution sufficiently-and in timeto avoid dangerous consequences must rely in part on preserving tropical forests,” reports EDF. But it’s hard to convince the poor residents of the Amazon basin and other tropical regions of the world to stop cutting down trees when the forests are still worth more dead than alive. “Conservation costs money, while profits from timber, charcoal, pasture and cropland drive people to cut down forests,” adds EDF. Exacerbating global warming isn’t the only negative impact of tropical deforestation. It also wipes out biodiversity: More than half of the world’s plant and animal species live in tropical rainforests. One way some tropical countries are reducing deforestation is through participa-

tion in the United Nations’ Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) program. REDD essentially works to establish incentives for the people who care for the forest to manage it sustainably while still being able to benefit economically. Examples include using less land (and therefore cutting fewer trees) for activities such as coffee growing and meat and milk production. Participating nations can then accrue and sell carbon pollution credits when they can prove they have lowered deforestation below a baseline. The REDD program has channeled over $117 million in direct financial aid and educational support into national deforestation reduction efforts in 44 developing countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America since its 2008 inception. Brazil is among the countries embracing REDD among other efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Thanks to the program, Brazil has slowed deforestation within its borders by 40 percent since 2008 and is on track to achieve an 80 percent reduction by 2020. Environmentalists are optimistic that the initial success of REDD in Brazil bodes well for reducing deforestation in other parts of the tropics as well. Sandy’s wrath stirs painful memories of Katrina STACEY PLAISANCE Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS
The chaos wrought by Superstorm Sandy, the homes tossed from foundations and landmarks buried beneath seawater, delivered a gut-wrenching dose of deja vu for survivors of Hurricane Katrina like Joe and Gloria Robert. Their own home flooded beneath 7 feet of salty water when the levees broke after Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, and they know all too well what their countrymen to the north will face: years of debris removal, cleanup, rebuilding, haggling with insurance companies, paying mortgages on homes left unlivable. And they knew they had to help. “When you watch things like this, you relive all the memories, all the heartache,” said Joe Robert, his voice cracking with emotion. He said the images of Sandy victims rummaging through what could be salvaged of their toppled and flood-ravaged homes were painful reminders of his own loss. “I don’t have any pictures of my daughter when she was little.” Seven years after Katrina destroyed neighborhoods, killed more than 1,800 people and caused some $108 billion in damage, many of the people caught in its crosshairs are reaching into their wallets and cupboards to try to bring relief to the Atlantic Coast. Church groups, nonprofits, City Hall and individuals in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast have begun sending care packages, donating money and staging volunteers for the clean-up and recovery efforts. Robert is working with the Episcopal organization that helped him rebuild his home, St. Paul’s Homecoming Center, which was established after Katrina to help residents as they returned to the city to rebuild. The center has expanded its mission to include victims of not just Hurricane Isaac, which struck Louisiana in August, but also East Coast victims of Sandy. The group has launched an “Adopt-aFamily” program where donations can be made to families in either region to help them as the holiday season approaches. The organization is also coordinating volunteer efforts along the East Coast. They are collecting donations and helping to ferry volunteers from the Gulf Coast to devastated neighborhoods in New York and New Jersey. “I hurt for them because they don’t know what they’re in for with recovery,” said Connie Uddo, executive director of the Homecoming Center whose New Orleans home flooded in 2005. “The event is one thing, but the recovery is another. It’s long, and it’s hard.” In New Orleans, the recovery is far from over more than seven years later. Many homes still bear the water lines and spraypainted marks left by rescuers searching for survivors. Some residents have run out of money, given up after years of battling contractor fraud and insurance companies. Even if the recovery goes smoother on the Atlantic Coast than it did in New Orleans, it will take years. “First you have to get over the emotional loss,” Robert said. “If I could give any advice, it’s not to be anxious. Looking back, the mistakes we made were because we rushed some things because we were anxious and emotional and trying to get back in our home quicker.” Robert said he rushed to hire a contractor because he was in a hurry to rebuild, but he ultimately lost time and money when the
contractor didn’t see the project through to completion. Taking a lead in organizing relief efforts for victims of Sandy are New Orleans musicians, many of whom have ties to the entertainment industry in New York. It’s a place that many travel to for gigs, and they feel an affinity for the city that never sleeps. A “NOLA Pay It Forward” benefit concert of New Orleans musicians is being organized by Mayor Mitch Landrieu. Proceeds from the Nov. 20 event will go to nonprofits supporting Sandy relief efforts. Ivan Neville and others donated proceeds from a recent New York concert to benefit Sandy victims while big band singer Johnny Angel — a Staten Island native who has lived in New Orleans since the 1990s — is taking a U-Haul truck of donated bleach, mops, rakes, buckets and cleaning supplies from New Orleans to New York. “Before we can rebuild, we have to clean up,” said Jeannie Tralongo, who lives in the hard-hit New York borough of Staten Island and is working with Angel to help coordinate the delivery. ‘We’re overwhelmed.” Tralongo said she’s one of the lucky ones. Her Staten Island home was spared of the tidal surge and flooding that decimated the homes of nearby friends and neighbors. “I’m trying to do what I can, but there’s still no power. People are cold and in the dark,” she said. Tralongo said shelters have been set up and she’s working with hurricane response teams in the neighborhood to organize volunteers for the grueling clean-up of streets and property littered with sand and debris. Neville, the son of Aaron Neville — one of the four Neville Brothers — said he remembers musicians from across the country coming together for the “Big Apple to the Big Easy” benefit concert after Katrina headlined by Jimmy Buffett, Elton John and others. His own family home in eastern New Orleans flooded in 2005. Neville’s band Dumpstaphunk played one of its signature songs, “Put it in Da Dumpsta,” for a crowd — some of whom had been without electricity since Sandy struck just before Halloween — gathered at the Highline Ballroom in New York earlier this month. “That song, it’s all about taking the bad things that have happened, taking all that negativity, and just throwing it in the Dumpster,” he said. “It’s about letting go, even if just for a little while.” That show and four others will benefit City Harvest, a New York-based group serving hot meals in Sandy-afflicted neighborhoods. Uddo said she empathizes with residents of the Jersey Shore, Staten Island and dozens of other hard-hit communities. Roughly 80 percent of New Orleans flooded in Katrina, and some communities along southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Coast were washed away. New Orleans was abandoned for weeks, homes made uninhabitable by either power outages or the structural damage done. “I know they’re overwhelmed, and I know they’re exhausted and have no sense of normalcy,” Uddo said. “There’s a feeling of being scattered and shattered, and all you want is to feel normal again.” After Katrina, thousands of volunteers flocked from points north to help people along the Gulf Coast. And it’s those memories that are driving people in Louisiana “to pay it forward, to return the favor,” Uddo said.

boats and Civil War battles may one day provide a new route for hikers who finish the Appalachian Trail to continue south until they reach the Gulf of Mexico, a national conservation group says. Leaders envision the Chattahoochee River as a way to allow Appalachian Trail hikers to reach the Gulf either on trails along its banks or in a canoe or kayak on the river. The trail already stretches from Maine to north Georgia. The Chattahoochee’s headwaters, in the north Georgia mountains, are near the trail’s southernmost section. “The idea is that someone looking for adventure could hike the Appalachian Trail, and then get off the trail and go to the headwaters of the Chattahoochee,” said Curt Soper, the Georgia-Alabama state director of the Trust for Public Land. The nonprofit has worked for years to acquire land in the area and make it available to its partners, such as the National Park Service. The new route could become a reality within the next decade, Soper said. The trust has already acquired and set aside 17,000 acres of land that touch 76 river miles from the Chattahoochee’s headwaters to Columbus, Soper said. The trust is also working on a project known as the Chattahoochee Valley Blueway, which involves 52 miles of the river from the city of West Point to Columbus, southwest of Atlanta near the Alabama line. The aim of that project, expected to be completed in the next three years, is to create a so-called “canoe trail,” a well-marked waterway with several places to launch canoes and kayaks, Soper said. In metro Atlanta, there are already more than 70 miles of hiking trails along or near the river within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, created in 1978 by former President Jimmy Carter. Soper and others believe there’s great interest in such projects. “The idea of a way to walk from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico is a wonderful idea that I think would generate a lot of interest and passion and would be wonderful if some way, somehow we could make that work,” said Patricia Barmeyer, an Atlanta lawyer who serves on the Georgia advisory council of the Trust for Public Land. One of the most recent land transactions was announced last year in Johns Creek, where names like McGinnis Ferry Road harken to the days when ferries used to carry residents and goods across the river. At a small ceremony near the historic Rogers
Bridge over the river, city leaders joined Trust for Public Land officials to announce the donation of 22 acres of land to expand the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The area is rich in history. The site was once a meeting ground between the rival Cherokee and Creek Indians, whose nations were separated by the Chattahoochee, according to historical documents from the city of Johns Creek. The tribes considered the area a sacred place and held peace talks there. The Chattahoochee also played a key role in the U.S. Civil War, when Confederate gunboats patrolled the river and soldiers built forts along the water to try and stop Union forces from reaching Atlanta. In the north Georgia mountain town of Helen, some businesses offer shuttle services to bring hikers from the Appalachian Trail into town, said Jerry Brown, executive director of the Alpine Helen/White County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Hikers frequently use the post office in Helen to get packages or supplies or mail items they no longer need back home, he said. The idea that hikers on the Appalachian Trail would be able to continue their journey on the Chattahoochee or its banks is an appealing one because the river runs through the town, Brown said. South of Columbus, the Chattahoochee forms the Georgia-Alabama state line. A hiking trail could be on either side of the river, which would offer some flexibility in creating it, said Tony Aeck, an architect who serves on the Trust for Public Land’s Georgia advisory council. After the Chattahoochee crosses the Georgia-Florida line, it becomes the Apalachicola River and flows across Florida’s panhandle, entering the Gulf of Mexico at Apalachicola Bay. “It would be a natural extension and a beneficial one for us,” said Anita Grove, executive director of the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce in Apalachicola, Fla. Vast amounts of public land exist along and around the Apalachicola River, Grove said. Homer Witcher, a 70-year-old hiker from Daleville, Va., said he’s supportive of the idea. Witcher has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, and plans to hike it again in a few years. “Any time you can have more trails, it’s good, I think,” Witcher said. However, an extended trek to or from the Gulf Coast would be more difficult because of concerns about cold weather farther north and in higher elevations, he said. Many hikers take five or six months to hike the entire Appalachian Trail.

VOTERS FROM PAGE 1 Press and a consortium of television networks showed 28 percent of those who cast ballots on Proposition 30 were between the ages of 18 and 29, a demographic that supported Brown’s initiative by an overwhelming two-thirds. It also was a higher percentage of young voters than the pre-election polls used to show the measure faltering among likely voters. “Every poll was assuming that young voters were going to be less engaged than they were going to be in each of the last four presidential elections,” said Scott Lay, president and chief executive of the Community College League of California, who also runs a data-driven political blog. Lay, who supported Proposition 30, said he was still surprised that the initiative fared so well, winning with 54 percent of the vote. Brown had faced criticism from fellow Democrats and the media for failing to launch an aggressive campaign sooner and concentrating so much of his effort on college campuses. Yet students apparently got the message. “He really connected to them, and they do feel a great deal of economic angst. Certainly they voted for Barack Obama, but that probably wasn’t the leading reason they went to the polls,” Lay said. Obama “may have ridden the coattails of Prop. 30 in California.” Part of the credit also goes to California’s new online voter registration system, which drew more than 1 million users this fall and helped at least 380,000 voters sign up for the first time, a demographic that skewed younger and more Democratic than the average California voter. The exit polls showed 53 percent of 30- to 44-year-olds also supported Proposition 30, while support fell below 50 percent for voters age 45 and over. The survey of 3,018 California voters had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. It was conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Research. Those under 30 joined minorities and women in supporting Brown’s proposal, which was billed as an education initiative and had support from the major teacher unions. Other exit poll findings for Proposition 30: — White voters, who made up 55 percent of those casting ballots, were split 50-50 on the initiative.
FOOTBALL FROM PAGE 3 that Samohi has advanced to the second round of the playoffs, a feat not accomplished for years. Last year the Vikings made it to the semifinals where they lost to Ocean League rival Culver City. For Samohi head coach Travis Clark the emergence of King gives opposing defenses something to think about. “They have to cover both of those guys,” Clark said. “Either one can score at any time.” While the offense made it look easy, the Samohi defense was no slouch. In shutting out Templeton, the Vikings didn’t allow them to cross midfield until late in the fourth quarter with a number of backups on the field. The shut out was the second in a row for Samohi, which blanked Hawthorne in the regular season finale. Clark joked with his team after the game, asking them “who likes donuts?” The players erupted in laughter. Samohi played well in every phase of the

— Hispanics, who were 23 percent of the electorate, were 53 percent in favor and 47 percent opposed. — Asians, who were 12 percent of the electorate, were 61 percent in favor and 39 percent opposed. — And blacks, who were 8 percent of those casting ballots, were 75 percent in favor and 25 percent opposed. Support for Brown’s initiative also fell with rising income levels: — Those who made less than $50,000 a year were 58 percent in favor and 42 percent opposed. — Those who made between $50,000 and $100,000 a year were 53 percent in favor and 47 percent opposed. — And those who made more than $100,000 a year were split 50-50. Higher engagement from younger voters will require future campaigns to adapt. Organizers said those voters are more likely to wait until the final weeks to register to vote and prefer to connect with friends about politics online rather than through fliers, phone calls or emails. “Email is now one of the more outdated forms of communication,” said Kris Octabiano, 25, managing director of the California Young Democrats, which represents 14- to 35-year-olds and helped target get-out-the-vote efforts this year. “Facebook and Twitter, it’s all peer-to-peer. Both are the proven methods in terms of communicating where people are.” Democrats used other tools to motivate young voters. When former President Bill Clinton was coming to the University of California, Davis, near Sacramento, students who volunteered to work phone banks for an hour or two beforehand — urging yes on Proposition 30 and no on Proposition 32, an initiative aimed at thwarting union power — received preferential spots at the rally. Clinton, who campaigned with Democratic candidates on college campuses several times but did not appear with Brown, proved a big draw with students who knew of him through their parents. Octabiano said once students are educated, they want to be involved in politics. He hopes the strong turnout shows that young people are now a strong voting bloc that should not be ignored. “They’re starting to see the light and saying every vote does matter and that despite previous election cycles where youth turnout was low, what we’re starting to see now is more young voters being aware of the issues at hand,” he said. game on Friday, something that will have to continue if they are to topple Serra, the No. 4 seed in the playoffs. Serra enters the game 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the Mission League. Chaminade, the No. 2 seed in the field, won the league. Round one was kind to Serra. The Cavaliers dominated Oxnard, 49-14. Despite having wins over heralded Long Beach Poly and Notre Dame on their resume, Clark said Serra isn’t a lock to win the game. While not showing well during marquee matchups against Mater Dei, Hart and Valencia earlier this season, the Samohi squad was exposed to top-tier talent and established programs. It’s experience that could prove to be essential if the Vikings are going to pull off the upset on the road, Clark said. “They’re high school kids, just like we are,” Clark said. “My kids have played some big games, too. We’re not afraid of anybody.” The game is scheduled for Friday at Serra. It begins at 7:30 p.m. daniela@smdp.com

VETS FROM PAGE 1 the years since have stepped into history, writing one of the greatest chapters in military service our country has ever known.” Over the next few years, he said, more than 1 million service members will make the transition to civilian life. “As they come home, it falls to us, their fellow citizens, to be there for them and their families, not just now but always.” Later, the president and his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, greeted families in the cemetery’s Section 60, home to graves of service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. In California, a war memorial cross that once stood on a rocky hilltop in a national park before being deemed unconstitutional and ordered removed was being resurrected in the stunningly stark Mojave desert, marking the end of a longstanding legal dispute that had become entangled in patriotism and religion. Henry Sandoz, who cared for the original cross as part of a promise to a dying World War I veteran, will rededicate a new, 7-foot steel cross on the same hilltop. The site is now in private hands as part of a land swap with the National Park Service that ended the legal battle. “Judges and lawyers may have played their roles, but it was the veterans who earned this memorial, and it is for them it rises once more,” said attorney Hiram Sasser of the Texas-based Liberty Institute, which represented veterans in the legal fight. The settlement approved by a federal judge in April permitted the Park Service to turn over the acre of land known as Sunrise Rock to a Veteran of Foreign Wars post in Barstow and the Veterans Home of California-Barstow in exchange for five acres of donated property elsewhere in the 1.6 million acre preserve, about a four-hour drive east of Los Angeles. The donated land was owned by Sandoz and his wife, Wanda, of Yucca Valley. Sandoz has cared for the memorial as a promise to World War I veteran Riley Bembry, who with other shell-shocked vets went to the desert to help heal and erected a wooden cross on Sunrise Rock in 1934. It was later replaced with a cross made of steel pipes. Then Sunrise Rock became part of the Mojave National Preserve in 1994, putting the Christian symbol on public land. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 2001 on behalf of a retired Park Service employee who argued the cross was unconstitutional on government property because of the separation of church and state, and federal courts ordered it removed. Congress stepped in and ordered the land swap in 2003, but the courts rejected the transfer. The issue made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in April 2010 refused to order the cross removed. Storm-ravaged New York hosted the country’s largest Veterans Day parade with turnout sparse along portions of the 30block route along Fifth Avenue. Standing in warm fall sunshine, officials said veterans should be honored and remembered more than just one day a year. “This nation has a special obligation to take care of you,” U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter told the crowd. Several officials also made a note of mentioning Vietnam veterans. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. One Vietnam vet, 66-year-old Laurence

Lynch of New York, said simply, “It’s about time. It’s about time.” Along a number of blocks of the parade route, just a few dozen spectators were lined along the barricades. Candice and Jeffrey Stark stood nearly alone on one stretch, waving tiny American flags. “We are shocked,” Candice Stark said. “Very disappointed and terribly appalled. Don’t get me started!” The Long Island couple was among the many residents displaced by the storm. The military has been very visible in the Sandy cleanup, so the Starks said they went to the parade to show their appreciation. In an event befitting the nation’s movie capital, the GI Film Festival Hollywood was launched this weekend in Los Angeles. Films at the two-day festival highlighted the successes and sacrifices of American military personnel and the worldwide struggle for democracy, said festival co-founder Brandon Millett. Movies must have at least one main character, real or fictitious, who plays a military role with respect. The festival’s mission is to preserve the stories of American vets, he said. “We noticed a lot of films portray GIs in an unfavorable light,” said Millett, who founded the festival with his wife, a West point graduate. “We wanted to show the courage, the heroism and the sacrifice of men and women in uniform.” The festival showcased eight feature films culled from Millett’s annual GI Film Festival held in Washington, D.C., in May, and debuted short films made by filmmakers who are veterans. It also recognized actors for their contributions to the U.S. Armed Forces and held a fundraising auction to benefit the Semper Fi Fund, which aids wounded Marines and their families. “We show all aspects of the GI experience, in the arena of war and when they come home,” Millett said. Chicago’s National Veterans Art Museum unveiled its latest exhibit called “Welcome Home” as it celebrated its grand reopening in a new location. “’Welcome home’ is the customary message given to soldiers returning from war,” a museum statement said. “After this initial greeting, familiarity dissolves and the traumas of war surface. Veterans set out to relearn the world they left behind, and their family meets a transformed person.” The exhibit is part of a series that examines the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the rising need for mental health care for returning veterans The museum has more than 2,500 works of veterans’ art with the mission of inspiring greater understanding of the real impact of war with an emphasis on Vietnam. The museum focuses art inspired by combat and created by veterans. A Las Vegas casino rolled out the red carpet for some 60 injured veterans in a special Veterans Day weekend trip. The annual “Salute to the Troops” weekend started with free American Airlines flights for veterans and their guests and a welcoming committee of MGM Resorts employees Thursday. Employees held welcome signs, waved flags and chanted “USA” as the honored guests arrived. MGM Resorts is hosting the veterans free at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, and treating them to a variety of attractions and shows during the five-day trip that ends Monday. Their itinerary includes a ventriloquist show, a trip to the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage, and the Aviation Nation air show at Nellis Air Force Base.

Fighting for Your Unemployment Benefits I
n these tough economic times many people are finding themselves out of work, sometimes for the first time in their lives. More than three million Americans are fired each year. After the initial shock of being fired has worn off, the practicalities of having to navigate the unemployment insurance system come into sharp focus. Generally, you are entitled to unemployment benefits if you are unemployed through no fault of your own, for example, if you were laid off, fired for a reason other than misconduct, or quit your job for good reason. Once the Employment Development Department (EDD) has received your application for benefits, it usually conducts a telephone interview with you, and also with your employer, to find out why you were fired. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous employers challenge their former employee’s application for benefits even when that employee was fired through no fault of his or her own. In this case, the employer usually claims that the employee was fired for misconduct. If your application for benefits is denied, you have 20 days to file an appeal. If you believe that your benefits were unfairly denied, it is very important that you file a timely appeal. You will receive a hearing date about 4-6 weeks later. Sometimes, the employer does not even bother to show up to the appeal hearing; they were counting on the fact that you wouldn’t fight the denial of your benefits. The hearing is your chance to explain your side of the story to an Administrative Law Judge. It is natural to feel nervous before the hearing, but you will feel better if you are properly prepared to present your case. You should ask to review the EDD’s file on your case, which will include the interview notes with your employer. This means you will get a chance to see what your employer said about why you were fired. You can also send a written request to your employer asking to inspect your personnel file pursuant to Labor Code Section 1198.5. You can ask witnesses who can corroborate your version of events to come with you to the hearing. If they can’t come, you can ask them to give you a written statement to take along with you. You
can also ask the EDD to subpoena witnesses for you. Finally, you should familiarize yourself with the law that applies to your case. A good starting place is the “Benefit Determination Guide” on the EDD website: http://www.edd.ca.gov/UIBDG/default.htm. You don’t have to bring an attorney with you to the hearing, although you may feel more confident with the support of an attorney experienced in this area. The Legal Grind can put you in touch with an attorney who can help you through the process, from advice on preparation to representation at your appeal hearing. Depending on the circumstances of your termination, you may also wish to seek legal advice to determine whether you have any legal claims arising out of your discharge. Although most workers in California are “at will” employees, which means they can be fired for any reason or for no reason at all, even “at will” employees cannot be fired in certain circumstances. For example, an employer cannot fire its employee for a discriminatory reason; or because s/he made a health and safety complaint; or because she took time off to perform jury duty. This is a complex area of the law, and an attorney can advise you on whether you may have grounds for a wrongful discharge suit. Upon investigation of the circumstances of your termination, an attorney may also identify violations which took place during your employment. For example, you may have an overtime claim if your employer did not pay overtime pay (time and a half) for all hours over eight in a day, and forty in a week, or a claim for meal period premium pay if you were unable to take an uninterrupted 30 minute meal break per five hours worked. Exploring potential claims with an attorney may help to give you some peace of mind in this difficult time.

CERT FROM PAGE 1 multipliers,’” Gould said. “You will be our ace in the hole.” There are already 200 people on a waiting list for the class, which will be taught again in January and early February 2013, but officials are thinking bigger, with maybe even a thousand trained. The preparedness mindset can be a dark one. A massive earthquake remains the most likely problem, and unfortunately one of the most difficult to handle. Unlike other natural disasters like storms, earthquakes give little to no warning. There are no evacuations, no last-minute runs to the hardware or grocery store for supplies — you’re either ready or you aren’t. The immediate and brutal nature of an earthquake makes it the gold standard for preparedness. If a person has the supplies and knowledge necessary to get through a quake, there’s almost nothing else that can rattle them, said Paul Weinberg, Santa Monica’s emergency services coordinator. A terrorist attack also tops the list. The Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Airport and Santa Monica’s pristine beaches attract hundreds of thousands of people to the city by the sea each sunny weekend, swelling a bedtime population of roughly 90,000 to 250,000 and more. That makes it an ideal target, and one that has already attracted interest from the wrong kind of people, said Michael Frederico, a sergeant with the police department. Frederico recalled an incident from 2005 in which a concerned citizen turned over
We have you covered pictures of a group of men videotaping infrastructure on the pier. That led to a “hardening” of security on the pier and promenade, with over a million in surveillance equipment added. The incident highlighted the critical role of the civilian in preventing potential attacks. “If you see something, say something,” Frederico stressed. There’s really no way for the three-day CERT class to prepare its volunteers for everything that might face them. Officials just hope that the training will give the trainees enough of a taste to mobilize in the case of a disaster rather than freeze, and be part of the solution rather than the problem. “We can’t simulate a real disaster, that’s a high price to pay,” said Brad Lomas, a senior fire inspector with the SMFD. “Hopefully you’ll be able to look back and say, ‘I saw this in CERT.’” Joseli Spilatro, a spunky member of the class, walked away empowered rather than burdened by the doomsday scenarios. “I feel courageous,” Spilatro said. “That was my goal, to be here for people in my community.” Those interested can sign up for the CERT class by visiting the Office of Emergency Management page on the city website (smgov.net) and downloading the application. Applicants must be able to pass a background check. Healing the divisions in post-election America PAULINE ARRILLAGA AP National Writer
APPOMATTOX, Va. Baine’s Books sits in the heart of this historic village, a Main Street institution where townspeople gather for coffee and conversation and, every Thursday after sundown, an open mic night that draws performers from near and far with guitars and banjos in hand, bluegrass and blues on their lips. Talk of church and school, and most certainly music, almost always takes precedence at Baine’s. But we’ve stopped in at election time, and Lib Elder is at a corner table tucking into a chicken pot pie, an Obama-Biden button pinned to her blouse right next to her heart. She knows without asking why a reporter has come to this corner of southern Virginia to write about an election that divided America among so many lines. Red or blue. Left or right. Big government or small. Tea party or Occupy. Ninety-nine percent or 1. Employed or out-of-work. Black or white or brown. This is, after all, “’where our nation reunited,’” said Elder, her voice tinged with slight sarcasm as she quotes the slogan adorning every sign into the town where, on Palm Sunday 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, marking the beginning of the end of the Civil War. It’s a nice idea, that a place could symbolize peace and harmony and, even, healing after what was inarguably the most divisive time in our nation’s history. It’s just not something that Elder finds particularly authentic after another cutthroat election year across these “united” states. The acrimony is still too fresh and far too raw. There was the family member, related by marriage, who accused Elder of “hating” her country because she had sent him a fundraising email for Barack Obama; Elder mistakenly believed he was a Democrat. And the white teenagers at the Appomattox Railroad Festival who saw her Obama button and jeered: “You know he’s black, don’t you?” Peace and harmony? Elder, for one, doesn’t see them. Not in Appomattox. Not in America. Not even now that Election 2012 is behind us at last. “I think we are much more divided,” said Elder, who heard similar concerns when she made get-out-the-vote calls during the campaign. “It’s not that people hate the election. ... They just hate everybody screaming all the time. It’s harder to hear anything, the louder you get.” And these days, she added: “Everybody’s voice is louder.” It’s a familiar election-year narrative, that Americans — not just the candidates, not just the parties, not just the pundits who shriek at us from partisan programming — but everyday Americans themselves are divided by an ever-widening gulf. We see it in the narrow margin separating winner from loser on Tuesday. Exit polling also seems only to reaffirm these chasms. On one side we have most women, the poor, people of color, urbanites, young voters and those who worship infrequently. On the other we have most men, those who are rich and white, rural Americans, senior citizens and those who worship regularly. Said Republican strategist and CNN commentator Alex Castellanos as he visibly agonized over this on election night: The
country, “right now, it is split into pieces.” But is all of this an every-four-year phenomenon that goes away when the yard signs come down and the Facebook tirades finally end, or at least subside? Can we do as our leaders do? Debate with fingers thrust in each other’s faces, tearing one another apart, and then shake hands, return to our corners and somehow attempt to live and work together once more? In this slice of Virginia, a literal battlefield turned electoral battleground, there are those who are no longer sure. They, like Elder, sense that something has changed. That the much-discussed polarization of this election will live on long past it, in ways depicted by more than a mark on a ballot. Friendships may wilt, suggested local lawyer Michael Brickhill, as some “fade out of social circles that you no longer feel comfortable with ... if there are strong differences of opinion.” He recalled a business dinner in California not long ago in which the group agreed not to invite a guy who’d been ranting about the election. “They were really, really afraid that he would not be able to relate on the common ground that we had formed,” which had nothing to do with politics, Brickhill said. Others may be hesitant to, at least publicly, brand themselves by party identity, said Bryan Baine, a former composition instructor who now owns the bookstore in Appomattox. “Why wouldn’t you be increasingly reluctant to put that label on yourself if it means this whole bunch over here is going to make assumptions about you or that whole bunch is going to make assumptions about you just because you said you were a Republican or Democrat?” he said. Young and old, black and white, Republican or Democrat, so many in the area found accord on the notion of discord — even if the lens through which they viewed this division was filtered by their own unique perspectives and experiences. Madeline Abbitt, a lobbyist who works in Richmond but lives in Appomattox County, sees polarization as a rural vs. urban issue. “I could look at the people in my condo unit (in Richmond) and I bet out of about 300 people, two might know what a deer is,” she said, only half-joking about those who likely oppose hunting and groups such as the National Rifle Association. “And you get out here, and you may know two or three people who know a gay couple.” Joe Day, the African-American chair of the Appomattox County Democratic Committee, views America’s differences through the prism of race. He recalls the slurs scrawled across Obama signs in 2008 and finds little progress in race relations four years later, even with the president’s re-election. “It’s still racism,” said Day, bemoaning the percentage of black teens in detention centers and a lack of black faces in city jobs. “Mr. Obama might be the first black president and we might’ve seen history. But there’s no unity in America.” Jan Greene, visiting the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park on her way to a convention of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, sees parallels between what divided us in the 1800s and today. “I SEE AMERICA PAGE 15
National Visit us online at smdp.com
AMERICA FROM PAGE 14 think especially in the South we are still very resentful of big government,” said Greene, who lives in Bradenton, Fla. “Washington has taken over more and more aspects of our lives.” Still, she added, “The South doesn’t have the strength to rise again.” Brickhill, the lawyer, lives in nearby Lynchburg, home to Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church. Before the election, The Lynchburg Ledger newspaper published a column called “Can a Christian Vote for a Mormon?” — making the case for why those in the local Christian community could vote for Mitt Romney for president, even if a “Mormon would be unacceptable” in any leadership position in a Christian church. Brickhill finds his community polarized along religious lines, certainly, but also “politically, socially, socio-economically. We’re polarized by our affinity for local collegiate teams. It’s either Virginia or Virginia Tech, and we are on the dividing line here.” Perhaps these deep divisions have always been there, stemming from long-ago wounds that never mended or stereotypes formed via our peers or our parents or the place we call home. Perhaps we just feel more divided because, as Elder suggested, we are more exposed to our dissimilarities in this very loud Facebook, Twitter, anonymous-onlinecomment-driven world, where everyone seems more emboldened to point out our many differences no matter the consequences. And yet there are consequences, and so the question begs asking: Where is the line between a polarized America that is productive and one that is destructive? Among the many lines dividing us, where and when do we draw this one in the sand? “Democracy is not about achieving agreement. It’s about figuring out how to live together when we don’t agree,” said social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who wrote a pre-election column in The New York Times dishearteningly titled: “Look How Far We’ve Come Apart.” Haidt is among those who believe that polarization itself isn’t a bad thing. “The competition between ideas can be healthy,” he noted, “or it can turn toxic.” Unfortunately all signs before this election were pointing toward toxic. He cited a few studies, including research showing that Congress is more ideologically polarized than at any time since the end of the Civil War, a downward spiral that began with the cultural wars of the 1960s and ‘70s during which the Democrats became “the party of civil rights” and the Republicans aligned themselves with the religious right. Of course it’s tempting to write that off as a Washington problem among the so-called political “elites.” Not so. Everyday Americans feel more hostility and dislike toward those from the opposite party than at any time since the American National Election Studies began polling on the subject in the 1970s. And these feelings go beyond where one side or the other comes down on any particular issue. “Politics has become a litmus test now for all kinds of things,” said Shanto Iyengar, a political scientist at Stanford whose research on polarization finds the lines blurring between political differences and how one chooses to relate on a personal level. Take online dating: “People don’t say anything about politics,” he said, because “you’re risking turning off a whole bunch of people.” Or consider cross-party marriages. Analyzing polling data, Iyengar found that

whereas in 1960 about 5 percent of Americans would be upset if their child married someone from the other party, in 2010 that rose to nearly 40 percent. “Fifty years ago when people were asked that question they just laughed ...’Why would I care about the party politics of my future son-in-law?’ “But today,” he said, “they care.” This plays out every day in communities big and small across America, in myriad ways that remind us that division doesn’t end when the polls close on Election Day. In Montana, Helena resident John Driscoll was so taken aback by a truck driver’s reaction to his Obama bumper sticker that he wrote a letter about it to a local newspaper. Driscoll had pulled over with a flat tire, and the truck driver stopped to assist but then admitted: “’If I’d known you were Obama people I wouldn’t have stopped.’” Later, at a tire repair shop, another man stared at the sticker — and then at Driscoll — and sniffed, “’You can’t be serious.’” “It’s those kinds of things that tell you something, I guess,” Driscoll, a former Democratic legislator in Montana, said in an interview. “People are generally very respectful of each other and I think they still are, but not so much that I didn’t want to write that letter.” In his book, “The Big Sort,” author Bill Bishop reveals how and why Americans have segregated themselves geographically, economically, religiously, socially and, yes, politically into like-minded communities. In one example, he writes about a Texas Republican who was ostracized from an Internet listserv in a liberal Austin neighborhood after he recommended a candidate for the board of the local community college. Pennsylvania librarian Roz Warren explored that very idea in a column she wrote this election year for a women’s website, revisiting the moment she discovered that her now daughter-in-law was a Republican. The lifelong Democrat found herself not only questioning how she’d raised her son — “loving a Republican was the one thing our son could have done to profoundly shock both his parents,” Warren wrote — but re-examining her own attachment to political identity and the perhaps skewed importance it had in her life. Of course, Warren said in an interview, what matters far more than her daughter-inlaw’s political preference is her heart — and her love for Warren’s son. Besides, her son has now informed her, both he and his wife consider themselves independents. Just outside of the town of Appomattox, past the rolling hills where American once fought American, is the monument that gives this community its place in history. National Park Service Ranger Ernie Price’s office window looks out over the house where Lee and Grant arrived at the terms of surrender. Price understands clearly the relevance between what divided Americans then and now: The many questions over government’s role in our lives, and ongoing disputes over racial inequality and freedom and individual rights over the greater good of the nation. He also sees lessons that today’s leaders might take from what happened at Appomattox in 1865, in the cordiality exhibited by the two generals, and the compromises they were able to reach. In the respect bestowed by one-time enemies when each army saluted the other as the rebel troops laid down their arms before their Union adversaries. “Just days before these guys were shooting at each other,” he noted. The metaphor can hardly be missed.

The Los Angeles Lakers spoke to 11-time NBA champion coach Phil Jackson over the weekend about returning for a third stint on their bench. The Lakers confirmed on their website that Jackson discussed the job with owner Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak. They’ll meet again early this week. Los Angeles fired coach Mike Brown on Friday after a 1-4 start to a season of enormous expectations. Interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff led the Lakers to a blowout win over Golden State later that night. Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard have voiced their interest in playing for Jackson, and the legendary coach’s return to the 16time champion franchise seems probable as long as Jackson decides he’s up to another stint in the prestigious job with a team that won five titles and reached seven NBA finals in his 11 seasons on its bench. “Knowing him the way I do, I think it’s really just a matter of health, if he feels physically up to doing it,” Bryant said Friday night. “He’s a perfectionist. We all know he’s a perfectionist. If he feels like he can come in here and give what he demands from himself, then I think he would be interested.” After several chants of “We want Phil!” broke out in the Staples Center crowd on Friday night, the Lakers had the day off Saturday. Jackson walked away from the Lakers in 2011, eager to improve his health by avoiding the constant grind of NBA travel. The former Knicks forward spent nine seasons on the Chicago Bulls’ bench, winning six titles with Michael Jordan before moving to the Lakers in 1999. Jackson left the Lakers in 2004 after the club lost to Detroit in the NBA finals, but he returned for a second stint after Rudy Tomjanovich and Frank Hamblen led Los Angeles to a 34-48 record in his one-year absence. After a rough start to his second stint, the Lakers reached three NBA finals
and won two titles after acquiring Pau Gasol. They fell short of Jackson’s fourth threepeat when they lost to eventual champion Dallas in the second round of the 2011 playoffs. Jackson followed through on his promise to leave the club, which didn’t acknowledge his departure with a news conference or any ceremony. “The one thing that’s kind of always bothered me is that his last year, I wasn’t able to give him my normal self because I was playing on one leg,” said Bryant, who had knee problems throughout the season. “That’s always kind of eaten away at me, that the last year of his career, I wasn’t able to give him everything I had.” If Jackson isn’t looking forward to travel, he could return at a good time. Los Angeles began a six-game homestand Friday night, and will host San Antonio on Tuesday night. Bryant vocally backed Brown’s work over the past two seasons, including his decision to install a new offense that didn’t click immediately with Howard or Steve Nash. After reacting to Brown’s firing with shock, the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history said he would welcome a reunion with the coach who created a nearly impossible act to follow in both Chicago and Los Angeles. Bryant has stayed in contact with Jackson during the coach’s retirement, even getting a couple of Jackson’s famed book recommendations. “A lot of it is Phil’s fault,” Bryant said of the struggles of the coach’s successors. “He teaches guys to be thinkers. He teaches us the little nuances, the details and the intricacies of the game that just a lot of people don’t know. It’s no fault of their own. When it comes to basketball, he’s genius-level. It’s tough for anybody to step in those shoes afterward from players that were raised underneath that tutelage.” Mike D’Antoni and Nate McMillan also are thought to be candidates for the job if Jackson declines. Kupchak said the Lakers are likely to hire a veteran coach who isn’t currently employed.

(2) A 15-year-old Swedish student, working at Malmo University Hospital on a "practical work-life" internship, was allowed by a doctor to make part of the incision for a cesarean section childbirth and to examine the patient vaginally. One alarmed cesarean patient alerted news media after reading about the orientation program in May and wondering if she had been a "handson" patient. ■ IRS agents, investigating taxfraud suspect Rashia Wilson, 26, turned up "thousands" of identification numbers in a September home search in Tampa. Wilson had already laid down a challenge in May, when she wrote on Facebook: "I'm Rashia, the queen of IRS tax fraud. (I'm) a millionaire for the record. So if you think that indicting me will be easy, it won't. I promise you. I won't do no time, dumb (expletive unpublished)." The search also turned up a handgun, and since Wilson is a convicted felon (with 40 arrests), she was jailed, and denied bail in part because of the Facebook post.
