THE ROAD TRIP ISSUE

History: Candidates jump into 1913 election late BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

THE PAST Ah, campaign season in Santa Monica. Despite the looming election date of Dec. 2, 1913, the mayoral candidates, perhaps feeling merciful, waited until mid-

November to throw their hats into the ring. It didn’t keep the race from getting heated. One hundred years ago this month, former Mayor Thomas Horace Dudley was first to announce his candidacy, hoping to unseat incumbent Roscoe Dow. Dow, through his cabinet of eight women, had become associated with temperance.

With the airport at least five years away from becoming a grassy-landing strip and development a universally encouraged concept (more than $1 million had already been spent on construction this year, a Santa Monica Outlook article boasts), Santa Monicans needed something to argue about. And liquor became it.

An initiative, proposed by the Law and Order League, would be placed on the Dec. 2 ballot to determine whether or not liquor could be served on Sundays in Santa Monica. “If Venice wants the undesirable element, SEE HISTORY PAGE 8

tration’s temporary reprieve for youth living in the country illegally has shown that any broader immigration reform effort would require the government to better prepare by streamlining application procedures and by providing more information about what documents are needed to apply to stay in America, experts say. Immigrant advocates say the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals has worked relatively well. Still, many nonprofits and even some school districts reported serious growing pains as they stretched to accommodate the avalanche of requests related to the application process. The youth program is open to immigrants between the ages of 15 and 32 who came to the U.S. before they turned 16 and live here illegally, haven’t left the country since June 2007 and have had no felonies or serious misdemeanors. They must also have a high school diploma or equivalency, or be currently enrolled in school. A total of about 1.7 million people could be eligible for the program. The reprieve affects only a fraction of the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally who could be part of larger immigration reform legislation. However, because it’s the first major immigration change in many years, experts see it as a template for a more comprehensive, and no doubt more complicated, overhaul. “DACA represents an important trial run

“Thor: The Dark World” bested “The Best Man Holiday” at the box office. Disney’s “Thor: The Dark World” continued its box-office reign with $38.5 million in its second week of release, according to studio estimates Sunday. Opening 15 years after the original “The Best Man,” Universal’s “The Best Man Holiday” opened strongly with $30.6 million. Drawing an overwhelmingly female and African-American audience, “The Best Man Holiday” was a surprise challenger for the mighty “Thor.” The R-rated romantic comedy, with an ensemble cast including Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, debuted with more than three times the box office of 1999’s “The Best Man.” That film opened with $9 million. The performance of Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man Holiday” continued an ongoing trend. Movies that appeal particularly to black audiences have often been surpassing expectations at the box office. “It’s a familiar refrain, and it’s getting a

little tired,” said Lee. “I thought we had a chance to do something special.” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” led the box office for several weeks in August, leading to a cumulative total of $115.5 million domestically. The Oscar-contender “12 Years a Slave” has made $25 million in five weeks of limited release. Lee said that while black audiences “see everything” at the movies, from action movies to romantic comedies, he hopes broader audiences begin responding to so-called “black films.” The audience for “Best Man Holiday” was 87 percent African-American. Regardless, a third “Best Man” film now seems a likely bet. “If there is going to be a sequel, it won’t take 14 years,” granted Lee. Marvel’s Norse superhero, however, has been hammering audiences around the globe. “Thor: The Dark World” made $52.5 million internationally over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $479.8 million. With Chris Hemsworth as the title character and Tom Hiddleston as the popular villain Loki, the Thor franchise has proven to be one of Marvel’s most successful.

Just as “Thor” approached the half-billion mark, Warner Bros.’ space adventure “Gravity” crossed it. In seven weeks of release, “Gravity” has made $514.9 million globally. “The Best Man Holiday” was the only new wide-release opening over the weekend, as the marketplace clears out for the release of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” In limited release, Alexander Payne’s black-and-white Midwest road trip “Nebraska” opened in four locations with a solid $35,000 per theater average for Paramount Pictures. Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” was originally slated to open, but was postponed to Dec. 25 by Paramount. Expected to be one of the year’s biggest debuts, Lionsgate’s “Catching Fire”will abruptly close the box-office window for “Thor” next weekend.“Catching Fire”opened in Brazil over the weekend, earning $6.3 million. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Bringing it to light Editor:

As one of the many long-time residents of Santa Monica alarmed at the unprecedented and disturbing pro-development tack that the city of Santa Monica and its City Council is taking, I was very pleased to see the article by Mark David Simpson that you published on Nov. 13 on the mysterious change in the LUCE allowing residential units to be re-zoned as commercial (”Resident group, City Hall propose correction to LUCE,” page 1). The influx of development campaign contributions to the majority pro-development City Council members is extremely disturbing as it defeats any possibility that residents will be able to prevent the ruin of their neighborhoods and peace of mind through the ballot box. I do hope that you and your writers will keep your eye on these shocking developments and bring such possibly corrupt actions to the attention of the city’s residents. Hopefully, this may prompt some more reasonable persons to run for the City Council and other positions to challenge existing members despite the power of the campaign contributions for incumbent pro-development candidates. Keep up the good work.

Young Santa Monicans unite Editor:

Re: “Next generation of leaders hard to pinpoint,” dated Nov. 14. By way of a brief introduction, my name is Steve Elson and I am president and founder of a local community organization called Young Santa Monica (YSM). I recently came across your Nov. 4 article in the Santa Monica Daily Press regarding the next generation of leaders on the Westside, and thought it was very interesting and well written (”Movers and shakers 2.0,” page 1). I founded YSM over two years ago with the belief — similar to the notions conveyed in your article — that young professionals living in Santa Monica needed a vehicle to become more pro-active and vocal in their community. While YSM is by no means agenda-specific, the organization has grown and evolved in such a way that its main focuses are (1) raising money for local charities (including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica, the Westside Food Bank, and Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services); and (2) participating in public discussions on city planning and development issues. Most notably, several YSM members sent letters and spoke before the Santa Monica City Council and Planning Commissions on multiple occasions to advocate in favor of smart, reasonable development projects that would provide the community with more affordable housing and local amenities. Your Nov. 4 article is very accurate in its description of the make-up of those who participate in these City Council meetings and hearings. I have been to many such meetings, and believe that YSM has much further to go in mobilizing young professionals to be more vocal. While I agree that the way young people get involved has changed somewhat, we at YSM believe that we have created a means to reach young people through social media and other new avenues with the ultimate purpose of getting those young people active in their community in the traditional way that people have always become active: by helping those in need and making their voices heard loud and clear to the leaders of the community. Thank you for your time, and I hope that this [letter] provides you with more of an understanding of the efforts many young people in Santa Monica are making to create a better community for everyone. Additionally, please let me know if and when you endeavor to write a follow-up article to your piece. I know that my YSM board members, many of the organization’s 250-plus members and I would be happy to lend their beliefs as to how we, as a demographic, can make more of an impact in Santa Monica and elsewhere.

My e-mail was hacked! MY GMAIL ACCOUNT WAS HACKED A

week ago — Saturday, Nov. 9, at 5:19 p.m. Approximately 200 people got an e-mail from bilbau@gmail.com asking them to open an “important document.” Even though I was on my computer at the time, I was unaware of the dirty deed until around 5:30 p.m. when I checked my personal AOL mail inbox and found two of the e-mails from my Gmail account which I quickly relegated to the spam folder. A few minutes later local activist Pro Se phoned and told me that hundreds of emails sent from my Gmail account to him and others didn’t appear to come from me. I immediately recalled the e-mails from my spam, copied the addresses of the recipients and e-mailed them saying that I’d been hacked and to not open the first e-mail, especially the attachment. In the meantime, Councilman Kevin McKeown e-mailed and also advised me that I’d been hacked. A number of recipients asked, “Who are you?” I didn’t know them, either. Among the hundreds of folks that received the original spam from my Gmail account were unfamiliar names and addresses along with some familiar ones from my address book including folks in City Hall such as McKeown. Google suggested changing my password which should end the incursions. I did and it seems to have worked. I found out the spam e-mails originated from a computer in Woodbridge Township, NJ. My own computer’s Gmail “sent mail” folder didn’t record the mailing. One recipient e-mailed that the “important document” wound up forwarding the same spam to everyone on her address book. Another recipient said she opened the attachment and saw a blue screen (The dreaded blue screen of death?) and was asked for account information. Wilmont board member Jim Pickrell, who is an expert on computers, e-mailed, “There are two possibilities: they hacked your computer, or they hacked your Google account. “Google accounts as far as I know can only be hacked by guessing passwords. On the other hand, if you are running Windows, it could be that your computer was hacked and they got your passwords and e-mail list that way.” I’ve been advised to use a complicated, random password and to be wary of e-mail, even from persons I know, asking to “download this” or “open this” — like the phishing e-mails I’ve occasionally received from acquaintances asking for cash because they’re “... stranded in Europe, have been robbed and please wire 300 Euros (not dollars) immediately.” To those who received the “important document” purportedly sent from my Gmail that Saturday evening: Sorry for the problems.

Lincoln Boulevard last Tuesday morning. Just kidding. Yes folks, it happened again. I dropped off the aging TR-6 at my mechanic Juda at European Exclusives (shameless plug) at 7:35 a.m. for servicing. I went to the nearest bus stop at Ashland Avenue and Lincoln and waited for a bus. After a quarter hour, the regular “3” rolled on by without even a driver’s wave. This is the third or fourth time I’ve been passed up there. I know why the driver doesn’t stop. He was probably loaded with high school and Santa Monica College students. Last spring, I was told by a Big Blue (I’m now calling it “Big Blue Bust”) service representative that the “3” is always filled during the morning rush hour for a few weeks around the beginning of the semesters. As time goes on and students adjust their schedules, the bus becomes less crowded. Being it’s nearing the end of the school semester, it would appear that is not the situation and might partially explain why the bad service continues month after month. I’ve written about filled busses bypassing stops a number of times in this space over the last few years. Big Blue’s management seems unwilling or unable to make changes such as adjusting schedules or adding another bus or two to meet peak period demand. Last Tuesday, I walked from Ashland and Lincoln to my home near 14th Street and Montana Avenue. I’m fortunate that I can walk the two miles. Many of Big Blue’s customers can’t. And, some must go much further. When they’re stranded, they miss appointments, are late for school or work and are highly inconvenienced. This is absolutely unacceptable and inexcusable. A couple of weeks ago, I was on a “3” coming from UCLA. The nearly empty bus passed a trio of elementary school kids and their nanny at the Gretna Green Way stop in Brentwood. Some months prior, I was bypassed in Westwood Village. There are other occasions where I or others were left stranded. While some drivers may just not see people waiting for the bus, it seems to be another issue that needs addressing. Public service is a scarce commodity at City Hall these days so I’m not holding my breath that any improvements will be made. I feel badly for riders who have to put up with lousy bus schedules, inadequate service and mealy-mouth excuses when they need a lift the most. I’ve finally learned my lesson. When unable to drive, I’ll walk or make other arrangements because Big Blue is just not unreliable.

Trouble in the deep Dear EarthTalk: I understand the Navy is doing sonar testing and training in the oceans and that their activities will likely kill hundreds if not thousands of whales and other marine mammals. What can be done to stop this?

Wilton, Conn.

Paying a living wage There’s been a lot of talk lately about raising the minimum wage and paying low-skilled workers more, including folks who clean hotel rooms and make Big Macs. In Santa Monica, a developer of two hotels agreed to pay its employees $15.37 an hour. Fast-food employees were also fighting for $15 an hour. City Hall has a mandate of $14.08 per hour. Advocates say raising pay is the only way people can survive these days given the rising cost of goods and services. So, this week’s Q-Line question asks:

What wage is appropriate for low-skilled workers? Is $15 an hour too high or not good enough? Contact qline@smdp.com before Friday at 5 p.m. and we’ll print your answers in the weekend edition of the Daily Press. You can also call 310573-8354.

Active sonar is a technology used on ships to aid in navigation, and the U.S. Navy tests and trains with it extensively in American territorial waters. The Navy also conducts missile and bomb testing in the same areas. But environmentalists and animal advocates contend that this is harming whales and other marine wildlife, and are calling on the Navy to curtail such training and testing exercises accordingly. “Naval sonar systems work like acoustic floodlights, sending sound waves through ocean waters for tens or even hundreds of miles to disclose large objects in their path,” reports the non-profit Center for Biological Diversity (CBD). According to CBD, sonar and other military testing can have an especially devastating effect on whales, given how dependent they are on their sense of hearing for feeding, breeding, nursing, communication and navigation. The group adds that sonar can also directly injure whales by causing hearing loss, hemorrhages and other kinds of trauma, as well as drive them rapidly to the surface or toward shore. In 2007, a U.S. appeals court sided with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which had contended that Navy testing violated the National Environmental Policy Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act. But within three months of this ruling, then-President George W. Bush exempted the Navy, citing

national security reasons. The exemption was subsequently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court upon challenge, and the Navy released estimates that its training exercises scheduled through 2015 could kill upwards of 1,000 marine mammals and seriously injure another 5,000. Luckily, in September 2013 a federal court in California sided with green groups in a lawsuit charging that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) failed to protect thousands of marine mammals from Navy warfare training exercises in the Northwest Training Range Complex along the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington. In the opinion, Magistrate Judge Nandor Vadas ruled that NMFS’s prior approval of the Navy’s activities there failed to use the best available science to assess the extent and duration of impacts to the marine mammals. As a result of the ruling, NMFS must reassess its permits to ensure that the Navy’s activities comply with protective measures per the Endangered Species Act. “This is a victory for dozens of protected species of marine mammals, including critically endangered Southern Resident orcas, blue whales, humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises,” says Steve Mashuda, an attorney with the environmental law firm, Earthjustice. The recent ruling will no doubt be challenged. Also, the Navy still has the green light to use sonar and do weapons testing off the East Coast despite the risks. Concerned readers can send a message through the NRDC website calling on U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to direct the Navy to adopt safeguards to protect marine mammals during training without sacrificing national security.

IMMIGRATION FROM PAGE 1 for a larger legalization process, should one result from comprehensive immigration reform,” said Tom Wong, assistant professor of political science at the University California, San Diego. Analyzing data from the initial phase of the program, Wong found possible undercounts of the number of eligible applicants in certain states, a trend that could carry over to a more comprehensive reform. Experts have also identified several hiccups that could be obstacles for broader reform: questions about what paperwork can be used to apply, sometimes long processing times and a lack of resources for local organizations, especially those serving Asian and other immigrants who don’t speak English or Spanish. The reprieve was up and running 60 days after it was announced in June 2012, and nearly 600,000 people have applied. DHS Spokesman Peter Boogaard cited the program as an example of the administration’s ability to quickly and successfully implement effective large-scale immigration programs. About three quarters of applicants have been approved. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency overseeing the program, is mostly self-funded through processing fees, which officials say allows it to keep up with demand. The U.S. Senate passed a major immigration reform bill earlier this year that would include a loan to the immigration agency to help process a larger number of applicants, an acknowledgement that more processing muscle would be needed. Speaker John Boehner recently said the House will not take up a comprehensive bill this year. One of the biggest initial challenges of the

reprieve was confusion over what documents were acceptable to show continued residency. USCIS was initially vague on documentation for this requirement, but within a few months of the program launch clarified that school and hospital records and utility bills would be accepted. Because many employers are wary about acknowledging they’ve hired people in the country illegally, many youths — especially those out of school — sought alternative methods to prove residency, such as doctor visits or social media activity. “In California, school systems were overloaded with transcript requests. People wanted copies of their leases from landlords, of their health records. Every part of society was triggered,” said Marielena Hincapie, head of the National Immigration Law Center. The Los Angeles Unified School District was so overwhelmed it created a central application form and added two new staffers dedicated to such requests. Advocates say other school districts and local governments have been less proactive. California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Florida had the highest numbers of applicants, and Mexico was the most common country of origin, according to government data through August of this year. Analysis of the data also shows Indiana, Georgia and North Carolina appear to have a higher rate of applicants than states with larger immigrant populations. Wong says several factors may be at play, including potential undercounts of the number of immigrants in states like Georgia, or even over-counts of those eligible in states like California. Should a broader reform pass, regions with newer immigrant communities may need more resources. The Mexican government’s cooperation — SEE REFORM PAGE 7

REFORM FROM PAGE 6 it quickly provided youth with necessary documents like birth certificates — is also something the U.S. should encourage other countries to emulate should broad reform occur, experts say. Early cases have been resolved in an average of three months, while others have taken half a year or longer. Advocates say the government should plan for bottlenecks from applicants with more complicated situations. Delays can be life altering for applicants, but they can also impact the nation’s ability to hold on to talented people in the workforce. Colombian native Juan Gomez was a star student whose parents were deported when he was a teenager. He won a scholarship to Georgetown University and received a temporary work visa to join JP Morgan Chase. Gomez applied for deferment in January, but his case was still undecided when his work visa ran out. Unable to work and tired of living

in legal limbo, Gomez left the country in August for a top Brazilian finance firm in Sao Paulo. “I immigrated to Brazil with Colombia documents, but I will always feel like an American,” he said in a phone interview. “When I close my eyes, I still imagine myself walking the Brooklyn Promenade.” Last month, Gomez received notice the government planned to deny his request. The reason: He was no longer in the country. Michael Petrucelli, a former acting director at USCIS, believes the private sector could also play a significant role in the application process. His company, Clearpath, is piloting an online tool he compares to TurboTax, which seeks to help those with simple cases fill out the forms. If and when Congress decides to address the rest of the 11 million people living in the country illegally, Clearpath plans to be ready. “Getting a glimpse into the potential future is pretty daunting” he said. “It’s a great reason to look at whether you have effective processes in place now.”

FRASER’S MILLION DOLLAR PIER

HISTORY FROM PAGE 1 let them go there,” a political ad in the Outlook read. The trial of a man accused of drunkenly battering his wife became the narrative center of the debate. The first allwoman jury in Santa Monica sent him to prison for 90 days “to cure the liquor habit,” according to the Los Angeles Times archives Dudley had problems of his own. Mrs. Geraldine Hogg wrote a confession alleging that unnamed “improprieties” occurred between her and Dudley (both were married to other people) in 1905. Hogg would later deny the confession, claiming it was given while under the hypnosis of Los Angeles medium Herbert Luzon. The confession was photographed and sent to the Ocean Park Bank, of which Dudley was president, advising the former mayor to drop out of the race or face the wrath of his wife and Hogg’s husband, to whom the confession would be sent. The Los Angeles Time got wind of the story (it went unpublished in the Outlook) and both Dudley and Hogg vigorously denied the story. As the election approached and the scandal died down, Dow founded his own newspaper, the Santa Monica Mirror, to stir the pot. It should be noted that this Mirror has no relation to the current Santa Monica Mirror, which is not a government mouthpiece. (Spoiler alert: Dudley wins the election. Booze continues to flow on Sundays.) • Everyone agreed on one thing: the city needed a new Municipal Auditorium. Los Angeles had about a dozen conventions each year, one 1913 grandstander noted at a widely attended meeting. How could Santa Monica compete? The fireproof structure would cost a whopping $60,000 but would easily pay for itself, the Chamber of Commerce said. • Fraser’s Million Dollar Pier, located between Marine Street and Pier Avenue, burned down in 1912 but in November of 1913 City Hall took A.R. Fraser to court, challenging his property rights. The trial forced Fraser to halt his reconstruction of his pier and called into question the notion of private versus public property on the beach. The Ocean Park Pier replaced it the following year. YE OLDE CRIME WATCH

The cops found a horse with a bullet in its side pulling an empty buggy on the outskirts of town. A gunnysack full of chicken feathers was found in the buggy. Police traced down the horse’s owner, who said he’d lent it to a friend. They deduced that the driver had been a chicken thief, evading an armed farmer who missed his target but hit the horse. The whereabouts of the chickens were unknown. Near Santa Monica’s Long Wharf, a man found a message in a bottle, which he turned over to police. In the message a Rose Donoghue claims she “can’t get back” from Cat Island. Police tracked down Donoghue, of 21st Street and Santa Monica Boulevard, who “arose from bed tonight to deny that she was cast away on a desert island,” according to the Los Angeles Times archives. One man was arrested in connection with an armed robbery. Charles Chick was walking on 22nd Street when A. Marino allegedly jumped out of the shadows brandishing a knife. Chick turned over 22 cents, but Marino wanted his cap and shoes. As he turned them over, Chick grabbed the knife and punched Marino a couple times in the face. Chick chased him down the street but lost track of him. Police picked him up a few days later. dave@smdp.com

MOVING ALONG: Santa Monica High School's Kwame Duggins rushes the ball against Channel Islands on Friday at Santa Monica College. Samohi went on to win the first round CIF-SS Western Division playoff game, 27-0. Next for Samohi is a trip to Lompoc on Friday.

SAMOHI FROM PAGE 1 Samohi territory before quarterback Ricky Estrada fumbled the exchange from center. Samohi defenders recovered the ball at the 23-yard line with just minutes left on the clock. “I’m a heck of a defensive coach,” Samohi

head coach Travis Clark joked after the game, noting that it was the third consecutive shutout for his Vikings. “That is what I do, what I teach.” Despite the lopsided score, Samohi’s offense was a bit flat with the exception of senior running back Will Taylor, who scored a pair of touchdowns. FOOTBALL FROM PAGE 10 Senior Kevin Person made his first start of the season at quarterback. Aside from a few gains running the ball, he was mostly ineffective throwing it. Senior Jordan Detamore also got a chance under center, but he too was unable to make many plays in the passing game. It’s a growing trend for Samohi to be a run-heavy team. Running backs Taylor and Kwame Duggins have increasingly become the focal point of the offense as Clark tries to muster up a passing attack. “It was a great victory,” Taylor said. “They were good, but we just stayed with it and things worked out for us.” Channel Islands head coach Gary Porter said he felt the game was much closer than the scoreboard indicated. “I figured we were pretty evenly matched,” Porter said. “But, they’re a pretty good team.” Porter pointed to a play early in the sec-

ond quarter that turned the game around. Driving down to the 5-yard line, Estrada was picked off by linebacker Terrence Jackson who returned it 95 yards for a score that gave Samohi a 10-0 advantage, “If we score that touchdown, it’s 7-3 us,” Porter said. “That really gave them the momentum.” It was momentum that Samohi wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way en route to the win. The win sets up a matchup with Lompoc. Samohi will have to take the long bus trip for the second round game, but Clark isn’t overly worried. He said that Lompoc is a team that likes to run the ball, something his miserly defense should be able to cope with. Lompoc (10-1 overall and 6-0 in the Los Padres League) advanced to the second round with a 38-7 drubbing of Cathederal on Friday. “I’m just excited for my guys to still be playing football,” Clark said. “We’ll see what the game gives us.” daniela@smdp.com

Del Rio interviewed for USC job his doctors determined he could no longer put off an operation to replace his defective aortic valve that wasn’t pumping enough blood throughout his body. Del Rio was named interim head coach of Broncos 48 hours later and he immediately decided to keep his defensive coordinator duties, as well. Del Rio, who went 69-72 in 8 seasons as Jacksonville’s head coach from 2003-11, never had a quarterback with the Jaguars like he does in Denver in Peyton Manning. And even though he came from a defensive background built on his 11-year pro career as a star linebacker, Del Rio never had a defense with the Jaguars like the one he leads in Denver with the likes of Von Miller, Wesley Woodyard, Dominique RodgersCromartie and Champ Bailey. Although Del Rio and Fox go way back — Fox hired him as his first defensive coordinator when he got his first head coaching job with the Carolina Panthers in 2002 — Del Rio is not a carbon copy of Fox. He told The Associated Press recently that he isn’t just channeling Fox during this stretch of games while his boss recovers. “You could characterize it how you’d like. I’ve said very clearly, he’s established a blueprint and I’ve worked with him before. So, I understand John,” Del Rio said.

ARNIE STAPLETON AP Pro Football Writer

DENVER Jack Del Rio’s stock is soaring less than two years after his firing by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Broncos confirmed Sunday that Del Rio interviewed for the head coaching job at Southern California during Denver’s bye week. Fox Sports first reported Del Rio’s interview with his alma mater. USC Athletic Director Pat Haden reached out to Broncos executive vice president John Elway for permission to speak with Denver’s defensive coordinator at a time that was convenient for the NFL team. Del Rio is leading the Super Bowl-orbust Denver Broncos while John Fox recovers from heart surgery and earlier this month he interviewed for one of the crown jewel jobs in college football — the head coaching gig at his alma mater, Southern California. Within three months, Del Rio figures to have a spacious office on a college campus or at an NFL complex. Del Rio was handed a golden opportunity to basically audition for any number of head coaching jobs when Fox landed in a Charlotte, N.C., hospital two weeks ago and

GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer.

SOLUTIONS TO YESTERDAY’S PUZZLE

■ Downtown London residences are known to be staggeringly expensive, but media blogger Sam Cookney calculated in October just how much. Cookney said he can live in an upscale apartment in Barcelona, Spain, and commute almost every workday to London (700 miles away) for less money than a modest central London rental. (Sixteen commuter days over four weeks a month would run, in pound-dollar equivalents: $2,420 for a West Hampstead rental, $121 council tax, and $188 transit travel card, totaling $2,730. Barcelona, in euro-dollar equivalents: $938 for a three-bedroom flat with three balconies near transit, no tax, $47 daily round-trip on Ryanair, $32 a day in airport transportation, totaling $2,202 -- a savings of $528 a month.) Plus, he said, sunny Barcelona is on the Mediterranean. (On the other hand, Cookney luckily can work on the plane, for each flight is two hours long.) ■ Lawyers for Radu Dogaru, who is on trial in Romania for stealing masterpieces last year from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands, said the heist was also the museum's fault -- for having such unimaginably lax security -and that if the museum did not admit that, Dogaru would sue. Museum officials said they had tracked some of the works to Dogaru's mother, who is claiming ignorance, and the son's lawyers hope to discount any insurancecompany judgments against her by spreading the blame.
