Household hazardous waste collection comes to your home or many years the community has put great effort behind properly disposing their household hazardous waste at the permanent collection center located at the City Yards. I’d like to announce a new program that will make it more convenient for you to take care of household hazardous waste and protect the environment. It’s the Home Collection Program. To participate is as simple as this – call 800.449.7587, speak to a customer service representative about the materials you are ready to dispose of, and schedule a collection date and location. You’ll soon receive a collection kit in the mail with instructions about how to prepare the kit. On the scheduled collection day, a trained hazardous waste technician will come to your home and collect your materials for safe disposal. You don’t even have to be home when the technician arrives.

About Home Collection Announcing the Household Hazardous Waste Home Collection Pilot Program, a safe, convenient, and easy to use pickup service where the “Haz Mat” technician comes to your home. Provided on a FREE and unlimited basis to all Santa Monica residents.

This approach offers access to safe household hazardous waste disposal for all our residents. It is environmentally friendly and saves the City money. Similar home collection programs are in use in a number of communities, including the cities of Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Inglewood, and Manhattan Beach. We’d really like you to take advantage of this new program. The first 200 residents to sign up for the Home Collection Program in 2012 will receive a new stainless steel water bottle. Please call 800.449.7587 and see how easy it can be, and then let us know how it works. Any feedback you offer is part of the testing process and may lead to refinements.

It is my hope that you will use this program to your benefit in a healthy and safe new year. Happy New Year!

You’ll receive a collection kit complete with instructions, pre-printed labels for unmarked product containers, a heavy gauge plastic bag, a plastic zip tie for closing the bag and a survey card with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Once you’ve scheduled your home pick-up, there are just a few things left to do.

Fluorescent light tubes should be placed on the ground (flat) and out of the path of foot traffic.

Please follow these six easy steps: STEP 1: Gather, inspect and label all materials for collection. STEP 2: Place empty heavy gauge plastic bag provided at doorstep or designated collection location. Do not obstruct or block the common path in apartments or condominiums.

Residents do not have to be home on collection day.

STEP 3: Place accepted materials inside the bag in an upright position. STEP 4: Secure the bag with the plastic tie provided. STEP 5: Place car batteries, fluorescent light tubes & electronic waste outside the bag.
