‘Tis the Season 2012
It’s beginning to look a lot like a Santa Monica holiday Public invited to attend first joint community tree lighting ceremony ith sparkling lights glowing over Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place, hundreds of trees a-glow, and shop windows decked out for the holiday season, Downtown Santa Monica is sure to warm the heart and bring the magic of the holidays to life. The area is buzzing with holiday spirit as winter activities and special events get underway this month, including the district’s first joint community tree lighting ceremony. While both locals and visitors flock to the area to shop at festively decorated shops and boutiques, many plan their visit to coincide with this event and the multitude of other activities that take place throughout November and December.
W
Community Tree Lighting Ceremony Harkening back to the days of old, this year Santa will temporarily abandon his sleigh and “Ho! Ho! Ho!” his way down the Third Street Promenade atop a vintage fire truck. Believers of all ages can follow along as Santa is escorted by local dignitaries, the Santa Monica Police Department mounted horse patrol, cirque-style acrobats, trumpeters and holiday carolers. The procession down Third Street will start at Wilshire Boulevard just before the 6 p.m. tree lighting ceremony in Center Plaza at Santa Monica Place. The tree lighting ceremony will feature entertainment and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, awe-inspiring acrobats, Herald Trumpeters and the Ace of Hearts Dickens Carolers. There will also be performances by season 8 American Idol contestant Ann Marie Boskovich and the Cimorelli Group, six singing sisters ages 12 to 21 whose YouTube channel introduced them to the world. This is the first year that Downtown Santa Monica has come together to present a joint community holiday event. According to Kathleen Rawson, CEO of Downtown Santa Monica, Inc., and Julia Ladd, Senior Property Manager for Santa Monica Place, it was a natural evolution. “We’re thrilled to partner with our downtown neighbors to make this tree lighting bigger and better,” Ladd said. “We’re putting a lot of effort into creating a mini winter wonderland in our Center Plaza that people of all ages will enjoy.” Once Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at Santa Monica Place, they’ll make their home in Center Plaza through Dec. 24. Children of all ages are invited to pose for photos and share their holiday wishes with Santa.
Celebrating Chanukah Downtown Santa Monica will also be hosting various Chanukah festivities. On Dec. 8, 11 and 12, public menorah lightings will take place at sundown on Third Street Promenade between Santa Monica Boulevard and Arizona Avenue. Santa Monica Place will also host a free Chanukah Celebration from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Dec. 9 in The Market on Level 3. The public is invited to come together to celebrate and learn about the traditions of Chanukah and enjoy games, music, crafts, storytelling and treats.

‘Tis the Season 2012
A fashionable season Santa Monica Place a hot spot for hip holiday shopping all and winter have arrived — even if the weather in sunny Santa Monica hints otherwise, sometimes — and with the new seasons come a host of parties, social gatherings and events that call for guys, gals and kids to dress for the occasion, ready to see and be seen.
F
Santa Monica Place’s pantheon of stores are stocked with fashions cued off the New York runway, but the Westside aesthetic runs a bit more wild than its eastern cousin, and the well-appointed holiday reveler needs to follow a few simple tips to make sure a delicate balance doesn’t turn into a hot mess. First, keep it dark. Rich, luscious winter colors will be embraced this year, with deep greens, wine reds and Bordeaux purples dominating the palate, said Maria Losch,
the mind behind the website Savvynista.com, recognized style blogger and “lifestyle whisperer.” Staple blacks are a must for fall and winter, and that’s where the neutral colors end. A brief flirtation with gray seems to be sneaking into the racks, but Westside women embrace variety, Losch said. Craving color? Grab some brightlycolored stockings to offset those deeper

Kitson Education advocates say what you do for your child in their infancy sets them up for the rest of their life, and what’s true for books can be true for fashion literacy. Enter Kitson, the store that, among other things, makes skull socks for would-be punk rockers and a “Boo-Yah” line of pants and onesies for your little daredevil. Place, will add a little sparkle with its holiday collection of silvers, blues and golds with the occasional gingerbread man charm thrown in for good measure. Westside women would also do well to connect with their inner vixen and pick up an updated motorcycle jacket. The lightweight leather and fabrics will keep you warm without weighing you down, and throw in a sleek, dangerous look in the bargain. The biggest advice? Have fun and trust your instincts. “Anything goes these days,” Losch said.

Coach Coach provides the ultimate in couture for women that want to class up their holiday fashions with a handbag and other accessories. Embellished and jeweled clutches can add a little sparkle, while crossbody and structured bags in solid colors will give a classic look. Losch suggests the Legacy bag by Coach, preferably in navy, caramel, mustard yellow or orange colors. The Coach website (www.coach.com) features the Legacy bag, a top-end handbag and a fantastic gift for a mother, daughter or girlfriend.
Eva Varro Bright colors, clean lines and comfort? ‘Tis the Season 2012
Have a cool yule at the ice rink by the sea ICE at Santa Monica opens for sixth season ust a few blocks from the Third Street Promenade and the Pacific Ocean, one of Santa Monica’s most recent traditions has opened for its sixth season. ICE at Santa Monica, the 8,000-square-foot outdoor rink at Street Street and Arizona Avenue, gives both locals and visitors the rare opportunity to glide over the ice while — on most days — the warm sun shines upon them.
J
The rink, which opened to the public in early November and will remain open until Jan. 21, attracts young and old, from novices to professionals. In fact, former Olympic hopefuls and world champions Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner hosted the grand opening of the rink on Nov. 8. “It’s wonderful that we’re able to have an open-air rink right here in Santa Monica,” said Babilonia, a Los Angeles native. “It just has a different, more festive feel than indoor rinks, particularly during the holidays. Randy and I really enjoyed being part of the opening and look forward to stopping by again!” “It’s a great opportunity for family and friends to be active together while having a good time,” said Debbie Lee, Vice President of Downtown Santa Monica. “Not only do we have one of the largest outdoor rinks in the area, but we also have a small, 400-square-foot kiddie rink where little ones can gain confidence. In fact, we have skates as small as size children’s 10, which allows even toddlers to participate.” Not only are kids invited to skate during the normal rink hours, but the popular “Lil’ Tot Time” program has returned this year. Children age 6 and under receive one hour of ICE time and instruction (plus some hot cocoa, of course) for $18 a session. Outside of peak holiday weeks, Lil’ Tot Time will be held on select Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. But tots aren’t the only ones who can learn to skate at ICE. Children age 3-7 can enroll in a beginner’s course, held over five weeks to help them develop the Details ICE at Santa Monica 1324 Fifth St. Santa Monica, Calif. 90401 Corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue in Downtown Santa Monica

coordination they need to maneuver on the ice. And, in the spirit of “you’re never too old to learn,” anyone age 8 and over can sign up for a basic course, also held for five weeks, which will introduce them to the fundamentals of skating, including forward and backward skating, stops, turns and edges. Stay safe in the season Tips on how to protect yourself and your family he holiday season is a time for joy. Nobody wants to get burned — literally and figuratively. Whether it’s a Christmas tree that catches on fire because of a bad bulb or a new laptop lifted from the back seat of your car by an opportunistic thief, public safety officials have some tips that will help you stay safe and protect your prized possessions.
T
“The Santa Monica Police Department asks that all shoppers maintain their personal safety by being aware of their surroundings, while keeping their personal belongings secure,” said SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis.
Don’t let crooks play Scrooge The holiday shopping season offers thieves plenty of opportunities to strike. Protect
yourself by following these simple tips provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you shop at night, ask a friend to accompany you. • Do not wear expensive jewelry. • Keep your purse closed and do not leave your wallet or checkbook visible. • If you carry a purse, wear the strap so that it crosses in front of your body. Or hold it in front of you, keeping the flap
against your body. Secure your purse between your body and your arm. • Carry your wallet in an inside front pocket. • Carry your keys in your pocket; you’ll be able to drive home if your purse is lost or stolen. • Avoid carrying a lot of cash; take only the credit or debit cards you plan to use. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. • Do not leave your belongings and purchases unattended. • Don’t advertise your purchases! Place all valuables/purchases in the trunk of your car. • Keep a list of credit card agencies and
banks with their phone numbers in case you have to report a stolen or lost card. • If you have to use an ATM, protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from those standing around or behind you. • Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. • Park in well-lit areas and always be aware of your surroundings. “Do not make several trips to your vehicle to place shopping bags in the truck, as this provides a suspect with a perfect target,” Lewis said. “If you find it absolutely necessary to secure packages in a trunk then continue shopping, consider moving your vehicle at the same time.”

Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? The event takes place on the SMC Main Campus at 1900 Pico Blvd. Tickets range from $5 to $6. Go to www.smc.edu/planetarium or call (310) 434-3005 for more information. Melodic holiday Dec. 16 7 p.m. McCabe’s free annual Holiday Show will give music lovers a sneak peek at what makes this music store/performance space so revered among fans. For more information, visit www.mccabes.com.
The fourth annual Holiday Art Hop will reflect holiday spirit in the form of entertainment, art, and, most importantly, food. The five-block stretch between 27th Street and Centinela Avenue will be transformed into a holiday getaway come Dec. 8. From noon to 9 p.m. families can traverse Pico Boulevard and enjoy discounts and special promotions from local businesses. “I’m looking forward to people interfacing on a one-on-one level with their merchants,” said Robert Kronovet of Kronovet Realty, a participating business in this year’s Art Hop. “Pico has an exciting and vibrant entrepreneurial spirit that the Art Hop will showcase.” In addition to promoting their own products, several merchants will play host to the works of local artists. Randy Ball, owner of Artistic Picture Frames and a member of the Pico Improvement Organization, is excited at the prospect of showcasing local talent at his gallery. His business, hosting an exhibit called “Small But Powerful,” along with others, including the Un-Urban Coffee Shop and Café and the Upper West restaurant, will be displaying pieces from mostly local artists. Kronovet echoes Ball’s sentiments about the importance of art to the festival, saying, “The better the art, the more interesting the event.” And variety is not in short supply, as onlookers will find everything from ceramics to folk art on display. However, Ball was careful not to omit
the importance of food to the festivities. After all, how could one ring in the holidays without the proper feasting? “Art is a major element of this festival, but we are also celebrating the restaurants here,” he said. Lares and Upper West are just two of the several restaurants participating in the festival, offering promotions and serving special dishes throughout the night. But, despite enlivening the connection between local merchants and their clientele, Ball says he’s most excited that the event will help ring in the holidays together, as a community. “It’s so much fun to see the smiles on peoples faces — to see kids stop in the street and wave at Santa Claus when he walks by,” Ball said. Aside from having Santa Clause on duty, the Art Hop will feature other highlights to add to the festive atmosphere. A barber shop quartet will patrol the street, caroling as they go. A pet adoption event will undoubtedly bring smiles to children who go home with a new family member. And as the Art Hop continues to bring joy to Santa Monicans for the fourth consecutive year, Ball is excited about the event’s expansion. “We are still growing this event — absolutely. Every year, we pick up another few businesses,” Ball said. And with hopes of that number only continuing to rise, the Art Hop is well on its way to becoming an entrenched Santa Monica tradition.

Temptations abound, but a balanced approach to diet and exercise can help fend off the holiday season’s threats to your waistline. Let the following fitness tips and offerings along Pico Boulevard guide you to a healthier holiday season and to a head start on New Year’s resolutions. “A lot of people gain about 5 pounds or so during the holidays, because of all the festivities and abundance of food and sweets,” says certified personal trainer Fabian Lewkowicz, owner of Fit By Fabian. “There’s also the change in the weather. There’s less light, the sun goes down earlier, so this time of year it is just natural for your metabolism to slow down.” Since time seems limited during the holidays, Lewkowicz recommends keeping a pair of athletic shoes in the car, so you can squeeze in a 20-minute walk between activities. Multi-taskers can combine shopping and cardio by parking farther away and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. “Twenty minutes of walking burns 100-150 calories, which is a cookie, a glass of wine or a soda,” Lewkowicz says. Strength-training once or twice a week is “imperative”
to counteract the loss of muscle mass that occurs after age 30, Lewkowicz says. Increasing muscle mass also increases the number of calories you burn, even at rest. Lewkowicz recommends targeting the large muscle groups, two joints at a time, with exercises like the chest press and seated row. To avoid overeating at parties, Lewkowicz suggests eating protein-packed snacks like a handful of nuts or a cup of yogurt before going out. Lewkowicz advises against skipping meals. “You’ll be less tempted to indulge if you have something in your stomach,” Lewkowicz says. But don’t feel you have to pass on all treats; just follow the 80-20 rule. “If you’re good 80 percent of the time, it’s OK 20 percent of the time to go out and do what you want,” Lewkowicz says. “It’s no big deal to go out and party, as long as you get right back on [track].” Through New Year’s, Lewkowicz offers his Jumpstart the Fitness programthree training sessions for $150. Going green for the holidays Tips on celebrating sustainably ith family members flying in, dinners to prepare, gifts to buy and a home to decorate, it’s easy for the environment to be relegated like that tacky ornament hung on the back of the tree where no one can see.
W
But celebrating sustainably doesn’t have to be difficult, and by keeping the environment in our minds we can help reduce our carbon footprint during the holidays, a time when the amount of trash collected jumps by 25 percent from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, which equates to around 25 million extra tons of waste. “One trend we are seeing is instead of giving a gift, give an experience,” said Andrew Basmajian with Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment. If you want to celebrate the season without the materialism, try putting the focus back on the spirit of giving by giving back, such as volunteering your time at a local shelter. Many non-profits have opportunities to serve during the holiday season, where families can come in to hand out meals or make care packages. You can also donate goods. So if you have to buy that new television or laptop computer, consider giving your old ones to a charity. The same goes for used clothes. Or for a little more excitement, how about a day pass to Pacific Park on the world-famous Santa Monica Pier? Ride the roller coaster and the solar-powered Ferris
wheel. Try a bike ride in the Santa Monica Mountains and appreciate nature or sign up the family for surf lessons and enjoy the ocean’s beauty and marvel at its power. If you can’t see yourself in a wetsuit, maybe cut a check to a loved one’s favorite charity or hook them up with a membership to the Downtown Bike Center if they commute to work using pedal power. Adopt an elephant in a love one’s name or buy an acre of a rainforest for preservation.
Santa Monica. In the 2011-12 fiscal year, local purchasing generated $45.8 million in tax revenue for Santa Monica, money used to fund parks, libraries, police and fire services, schools, affordable housing programs and community festivals. Of that money, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District received $6.45 million directly from Measure Y dunds; support that cannot be taken by the state. “Buying locally supports a sustainable Santa Monica,” Taylor said. “Every purchase made in Santa Monica over the holidays is also a gift to the community.” And if you can leave the car at home and bike or take the bus to shops, you can continue to chip away at your carbon footprint while helping to make Santa Monica a more diverse and compassionate city.
Buy local Sustainable suggestions There are local vendors out there to choose from, including those who have been certified as a green business through a program run by City Hall and Sustainable Works. These are businesses that have made a commitment to reduce their energy consumption and recycle waste. For a list of green businesses, which include restaurants, retail, grocery stores and hotels, visit www.smgbc.org/index.htm “Buying locally truly makes a difference,” said Jennifer Taylor, economic development administrator for the city of
Here are some other helpful hints to make your holiday as green as possible: • When buying presents, keep an eye out for those with minimal packaging, or items packed in recycled or recyclable materials (e.g. cardboard). • Don't throw your wrapping paper in the garbage or fireplace. More than 8,000 tons of wrapping paper will be used on presents, using the equivalent of 50,000 trees. Reuse or recycle! • Buy recycled wrapping paper and holiday cards. Around 744 million holiday cards are sent each holiday season. If all these were made from recycled paper, it would help to save the equivalent of 248,000 trees. • Save and reuse cards that you receive as gift tags for next year. • If you are buying toys or electrical goods that need batteries, buy rechargeable ones, then add a battery charger to your shopping list. Make sure to recycle those old batteries instead of tossing them. • Most people buy too much food for holiday gatherings, much of which goes to waste. This year, try to plan your meals and only buy what you need. Alternatively, put a compost bin on your shopping list, significantly reducing the trash going to landfills. • When buying your food, buy local, organic or fair-trade. A traditional dinner that uses local seasonal produce and food
from a local market or grocer helps reduce "food miles" (the distance food travels to reach your plate). Santa Monica is home to four certified Farmers’ Markets so you should have no trouble finding what you need. • If you receive electronic goods this season, don't throw your old ones away. Recycle or donate them. • Around 125,000 tons of plastic packaging are thrown away over the holiday season. Take your own reusable shopping bags when you do your shopping. • Make your own food-based gifts such as homemade chutneys, cakes or chocolate truffles. You could also make your own flavored organic olive oil, adding dried chilies, garlic or herbs. • If you're having a party, avoid serving food and drinks on disposable plates and cups. If you don't have enough reusable plates, have everyone bring their own! • Use LED lights for decorating. LED holiday lights use 90 percent less energy than traditional ones and can have up to a 50,000 hour bulb life. • Turn down your thermostat when cooking or entertaining; these will naturally warm the home. • Unplug appliances when not in use. • Make your New Year's resolution to live more sustainably.
Getting rid of it When it’s time to dispose of your tree consider recycling it at one of several sites run by the city of Santa Monica. In previous years residents have been encouraged to drop off their trees at these locations: • Clover Park, 25th Street and Ocean Park Boulevard • Douglas Park, Wilshire Boulevard and Chelsea Avenue • Christine Emerson Reed Park, Lincoln Boulevard and California Avenue • Hotchkiss Park, Fourth and Strand streets • Southern California Disposal Transfer Station 1837 24th St. The trees are recycled into mulch free of charge. T
Enterprise Fish Company 174 Kinney St., (310) 392-8366 Enterprise opened in 1979 with the goal of capturing the spirit of the traditional Pacific Coast wharf-side eatery and bringing it to Santa Monica, and they have definitely succeeded. The brick building houses a classic Californian environment, featuring a salt water aquarium, photos of old Venice and displays of oceanic glass and cool lighting. Seafood is grilled on charcoal for the dining room, and patrons can eat on a heated patio. Come for the mood, come for the lobster, either way you’re sure to enjoy yourself. Library Alehouse 2911 Main St., (310) 314-4855 You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you might be able to judge the Library Alehouse by its name. Made by guys who know beer, the Alehouse stocks its shelves with ales, stouts and more from some of the finest and most fascinating microbreweries, not to mention a long list of local and imported wines and a menu full of classy pub grub appetizers. With tastes for every palate, even a beer illiterate can graduate to a brewery connoisseur in a single evening. The Galley 2442 Main St., (310) 452-1934 Half salty dog Singapore hideaway, half movie memorabilia dream factory, The Galley has been one of the most atmospheric spots in Santa Monica since it first opened in 1934. Bamboo and rattan furnishing straddle blissfully between seashells, rigging and photos of classic Hollywood royalty to make this Southern California sea tavern truly unique. Enjoy a candlelit dinner with some steak, shrimp or pasta, grab a drink at the South Seas Bar, or take in the salt air on the Patio Lounge; you’ll get your sea legs in no time. The Basement Tavern 2640 Main St., (310) 396-2469 What happens when the 19th century charm of Santa Monica’s famous Victorian meets the modern gastro pub? You get the singular environment of The Basement Tavern. Drink beer and cocktails in the delicate beauty of the patio, listen to music and lounge in the basement, or sample the soft library feel of the attic. Come in on
Sunday for daylong happy hour, including half off bottles of wine, from 5 p.m. to closing time. Rick’s Tavern 2907 Main St., (310) 392-2772 Maybe you’re someone who just wants a juicy burger, a cold beer, and a game on the TV. If so, Rick’s Tavern on Main is the bar and restaurant for you. Merging “traditional diner” with “sports bar,” the friendly staff at Rick’s serves up a classic menu of beers, burgers, salads and sausages with a no nonsense atmosphere, so you can watch sports on one of the five HD TVs, or just dig into the tasty food and drinks. Finn McCool’s Irish Pub 2702 Main St., (310) 452-1734 You can’t get much more Irish than Finn McCool’s. The pub’s interior, from the memorabilia to the bar itself, were carried over from the Emerald Isle by owner Geraldine Gilliland to honor her late stepfather and his own Irish pub. Naturally that feeling extends to the menu; Finn McCool’s offers one of the most expansive whiskey selections in the area, as well as draught beers, cocktails, and to snack on, Irish potato skins, as featured on The Travel Channel’s “Pub Paradise.” Come in on a live music night and hear some of the best traditional and contemporary Irish music around. ‘Tis the Season 2012
Green light Block after block, Main Street has some of the greenest goods and services, offered by some of the most responsible businesses in town ave you ever heard of a “Green Light District?” If not, Frank Angiuli, founder of Natural High Lifestyle, aims to fix that.
H
He’s the leading proponent of the Green Light District initiative, which wants to turn neighborhoods into havens of ecofriendly shopping. The name? “It sticks in people’s minds,” Angiuli said. A Green Light District is a part of a city where eco-friendly restaurants, clothing outlets and home furnishing stores band together to help residents live a responsible, green lifestyle. Angiuli founded the first Green Light District in Santa Monica, and since then neighborhoods in Brooklyn and New Orleans have followed suit. But a Green Light District is more than environmentally aware; it’s also community aware, and has an open and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. “It’s a family friendly, safe neighborhood,” Angiuli said. “Green
means ‘go, no need for concern.’” If going green is a community effort as much as an individual effort, then Main Street is leading the way. Main Street has many businesses that act with an environmental conscience from the way they operate to the products they sell. The result? A good feeling that lasts the whole year through. Euphoria Loves RAWvolution 2301 Main St. (310) 392-9591 Operated by Janabai and Matt Amsden, Euphoria Loves RAWvolution was created to fuel a body living an eco-conscience lifestyle. ELR is the first and only organic, vegan and raw food market and gourmet café in the United States; proponents of raw food say that traditional methods of
preparing dishes destroy much needed enzymes, as well as essential vitamins and minerals, in the food. ELR seeks to counter that by offering raw versions of everything you can think of, from soups and salads to pizza and burgers; and don’t miss out on their luscious desserts and shakes. More than a menu, ELR is committed to eco-friendly operation. Beyond using exclusively vegan ingredients, the café also buys pesticidefree, organic produce from local farmers, composts all its leftovers, and uses only biodegradable to-go containers made from sugar cane fiber and corn. Kellygreen Home 2525 Main St. (310) 450-6464 Kellygreen Home’s tagline is “high design, low impact.” Products are crafted to help customers consume less, all the while reusing and recycling old materials. Everything from the kitchen — bamboo towels and recycled glass tumblers — to the bathroom — natural hand soap — to the bedroom — throws made from reconstituted cotton — is on display. And that’s just the beginning. Outfit your office, clean your home, and even stock your bar with goods and accessories that help the environment with rustic urban style. And with gift cards available, it’s the perfect place to grab something for the greenest people on your holiday shopping list. Natural High Lifestyle 2400 Main St. (310) 450-5837 For 10 years, Natural High Lifestyle has
supplied Main Street, and Santa Monica, with clothing and accessories designed for comfort and motion. Using local manufacturers, Natural High Lifestyle turns organic cotton, hemp and renewable bamboo into beach-ready fashion that fits in with some of California’s favorite eco and body activities, including yoga and surfing. Accessories are offered that suggest simple living: meditation cushions, farmers’ market bags, yoga mats and beach blankets. Vital Hemp 2305 Main St. (310) 450-2260 Vital Hemp is about comfort as well as conscience, clothes that look good, feel good, and are good for the environment. The store envisions a future where hemp, which is more durable than other materials, is increasingly used for clothes, paper and building supplies. For the moment, Vital Hemp is satisfied to make shirts, pants and accessories. The hemp used to produce Vital Hemp’s products is grown responsibly in the United States. And also, the clothes just feel great.

City of Santa Monica
‘Tis the Season 2012
Park your sleigh, reindeer here New Downtown parking rates now with first 90 minutes free, all day, every day t’s no secret that parking in Santa Monica is a limited resource in high demand, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to drive around in search of a spot. By planning ahead you can make sure to save time and money by not cruising aimlessly in your car. Before calling on Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer, or on Vixen, you should check the city of Santa Monica’s website — www.smgov.net/parking — to locate a citywide parking map with real-time information on many of the city’s parking structures and lots. The map lets you focus on one particular area and tells you how many spaces are currently available.
I
Those who plan to shop Downtown at the Third Street Promenade or Santa Monica Place can take advantage of the new short-term rates available at the Downtown SM public parking structures. The first 90 minutes are now free all day, every day — your first gift of the holiday season. The next hour is $1 and each additional 30 minutes will run you $1.50. The daily max is $14. Sundays from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., parking is free. For those planning to spend a whole day shopping, eating and playing Downtown, consider parking at the Civic Center or the Santa Monica Main Library. For just a few short blocks extra walk, you’ll save $9 on the daily maximum rate (total max rate at these is just $5, free parking for first 90 minutes also applies here). At Main Street and the other commercial districts in town, city-owned surface lots are 50 cents for every 30 minutes (excluding the beach lots) On-street parking has also gotten much easier, thanks to the new “smart” meters
that have been installed across the city, which allow for convenient, short-term parking in all the commercial districts (including Main Street, Montana Avenue and Pico Boulevard), combining the latest in new technology and customer service. Instead of carrying around a roll of quarters, customers can pay by credit card, phone (and yes, coins are still allowed but you might want to save them for the laundry!). Customers who pay by phone can receive text messages when the meter is about to expire and can remotely add more time up to the posted time limit. Parking meters Downtown and near the beach are $2 per hour, while all others are $1 per hour. Make sure to pay close attention to posted parking restrictions so you can avoid getting a ticket. And that includes not feeding the meter. For more information on city parking: www.smgov.net/departments/transportation/ parking.aspx
Free parking Parking meters will not be enforced on the following holidays, except for meters that are enforced daily such as those downtown and near the beach, according to posted signage: • Thanksgiving Day: The fourth Thursday in November • Christmas Day: Dec. 25 • New Year’s Day: Jan.1
for the time limit posted. • White zones are enforceable 24 hours for the three minute time limit. • All city of Santa Monica meter lots (payby-space) are enforced seven days a week, 24 hours a day. • Vehicles displaying special recognition plates issued by the state of California or a valid white or green Clean Air or Zero Emissions decal can park at meters without paying. As of July 1, 2011, yellow hybrid decals are no longer exempt.
And don’t forget that BIKE parking is free all the time! Going another route Keep in mind • Vehicles cannot be parking in the same parking space for more than 72 hours. • Yellow loading zones (15 minute limit) are enforced Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., unless otherwise posted. • Green zones are enforceable 24 hours
If you want to avoid the car altogether, consider Big Blue Bus or a bike or shop by foot and take advantage of local delivery service offered by GoFerIt, Whole Foods on Wilshire and other participating local businesses. For more information, visit www.buylocalsm.com.
