As companies like Google and Facebook set up shop in neighborhoods west of the 405 freeway, their employees have helped push the area’s median home price to $952,500 last quarter, up 19.2 percent from a year ago and above pre-recession highs, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. Brecht and Weill, is the first theater production to be held at the far western end of the pier. This event, with its seating of 70 to 150 people, is one of several mid-sized events that pier officials are encouraging, saying that they are easy to manage and popular with vendors. “I thought of all of it as a daydream,” Sand said. “Daydreams are very important. They’re like blueprints. I thought of it right about here.” He’s standing at the end of the pier; the ocean is a bright blue and the coast-

Organizers of a youth football tournament in Las Vegas say two teams from California accounted for the lion’s share of illnesses during an outbreak at the event. Tournament spokesman Justin Gates said Sunday that some 90 to 100 players, coaches and parents developed flu-like symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea during the four-day National Youth Football Championships that ended Saturday. Of those, he says a Santa Monica, Calif., team accounted for about 50 cases and a Bakersfield, Calif., team accounted for some 25 cases. He says it was the worst such outbreak in the 40 years that his Florida-based company, Sports Network International, has been holding the tournament, but it only affected a little more than 1 percent of 7,000 attendees and could have been worse. Southern Nevada Health District officials say the symptoms are consistent with norovirus, a mostly food- or waterborne illness that can also be spread by an infected person. They’re investigating the cause of the outbreak.

‘Catching Fire,’ ‘Frozen’ break box office records ‘JESSICA HERNDON AP Film Writer

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and 3-D animated musical “Frozen” dished up box office records over the Thanksgiving holiday. Lionsgate’s sequel earned a prodigious $75 million in its second weekend, while Disney’s frosty fete opened with $67 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Both films bested the previous Thanksgiving record holder, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” which earned $57.5 million in 2001 over a three-day period. Snowballing its way to the top, “Frozen” became the biggest Thanksgiving opening ever and the largest opening for Walt Disney Animation Studios. “For a company whose foundation was built on animation, to have this as the biggest opening ever is a pretty extraordinary thing,” said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution at Walt Disney Studios, adding that the box office draw of “Frozen” exceeded studio expectations. “We came into the weekend feeling like anything that would exceed the result from ‘Tangled’ from a couple years back would be great,” Hollis added. “Tangled” opened with $68.7 million in 2010. “We thought something in the $70-$80 million range is what might be possible with ‘Frozen.’ We are hoping it lends itself to a big, long payoff after this great start.” The films topped records for the highest domestic box office grosses for the three-day and five-day holiday weekend. “Catching Fire” blazed the trail to No. 1 and “Frozen” slid in at No. 2. “Catching Fire” earned the biggest-ever gross for a film from Wednesday to Sunday over the Thanksgiving holiday. It brought in $110.2 million, raising its domestic total to $297 million. “Frozen” scored $93 million over the five days, topping Disney’s previous five-day champ, “Toy Story 2,” which earned $80.1 million in 1999. “All of these records being broken, it’s like a true snowball effect,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “Overall, this is the biggest Thanksgiving weekend for the industry ever. Bulger belongings could land on auction block THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BOSTON Former Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger could soon see some of his jewelry, clothes and other belongings on the auction block. The U.S. Marshals Service will auction off many of the items seized from Bulger’s California apartment after his arrest two years ago, The Boston Globe reported Saturday. Authorities say the profits will be split among the families of those who were killed by Bulger. Federal prosecutors told the newspaper that the items belonging to Bulger and his girlfriend are in storage in Massachusetts and are being appraised. Officials believe the highest-value items include a claddagh ring estimated to be worth $48,000 and Bulger’s replica 1986 Stanley Cup championship ring valued at about $3,000. The 84-year-old Bulger was sentenced

Nov. 14 to life in prison. He was found guilty in August by a federal jury in 11 of the 19 killings he was accused of, along with dozens of other gangland crimes, including shakedowns and money laundering. Bulger also owned a boxing mannequin topped with a hat that was apparently propped in the window of his apartment to make it look as though there was someone keeping lookout. Other items include binoculars, a telescope, camouflage clothing, nine fedoras, 27 pairs of sunglasses, ceramic poodle salt and pepper shakers, assorted porcelain cats and hundreds of books, many with Bulger’s handwritten notes scrawled in the margins. There’s also a McCain/Palin campaign button and a God Bless America poster. “The reality is there are lots of people who would be willing to pay money for some or all of the contents of that apartment, and that money is going to victims and victims’ families. So we want to do

what we can to get as much money as we can for them,” First Assistant US Attorney Jack Pirozzolo told the newspaper. Authorities said they’re trying to be sensitive to the victims in the case and have yet to decide whether it is appropriate to cash in on Bulger’s notoriety by selling some of the other items, ranging from his blue and white dinnerware to his size 9.5 sneakers. Jason Wojdylo, chief inspector of the asset forfeiture division of the U.S. Marshals Service, said the U.S. attorney’s office will decide what to sell. After the court approves a sale, it usually takes up to 60 days to schedule an auction, he said. Bulger fled Boston in 1994 after being tipped off by his former FBI handler that he was about to be indicted, and he remained a fugitive for more than 16 years until he was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.

Paying too much to the police Editor:

It is time for the City Council to act on behalf of the tax payers and stop the looting of our city’s revenue base by the police force (”28 cops took home more than $200K,” Nov. 27, page 1). Will some of you please stand up and not be bought off by the police union. I find it outrageous that 28 police officers make over $200,000 per year plus a generous benefit package and outsized retirement packages (at an early age). We spend so much time speaking about living wages. It is time we raise the issue of extortion wages. Nobody forced these people to take these jobs and I would not categorize Santa Monica as a terribly dangerous place to work. I would love to ride a bike around town or an ATV on the beach and make over $200,000. On top of this, they don’t even do a good job. How many of you have been victims of crime? I have several times. The last time my house was broken into I had a difficult time even getting the police to take a report. They never even followed up. To add insult to injury, when I requested a police report so that I could extend my fraud protection (as a result of having my entire financial history stolen from my residence) they charged me for it! Who works for who? In this city it seems we are here to serve the police. Time to take the city back, lower pay and benefits and get some service.

Restore Chain Reaction Editor:

Re: Dear Mayor O’Connor, Mayor Pro Tempore O’Day and City Council members: The Santa Monica Conservancy Board of Directors is concerned about the status of the deteriorating Chain Reaction sculpture and requests that the city take further action to fulfill its responsibility, as owner of the landmark sculpture, to ensure its restoration and preservation. We request that the council agendize discussion of the status of the sculpture and direct staff to prepare a scope of work detailing requirements to repair and preserve the sculpture. While staff has engaged wellrespected experts for reports on the structure’s condition and recommendations for repair and preservation, their proposed scope of work and cost estimates have been widely divergent and no proposal has been submitted to the Landmarks Commission for its consideration. As the Landmarks Commission has suggested, a “float up” presentation of this scope of work at an early conceptual stage would facilitate the process of moving toward the certificate of appropriateness, thereby enabling the commission to exercise its responsibility to ensure that the work proposed will be in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for treatment of historic structures and will not pose risks to the integrity of the landmark. We also ask that you once again extend the deadline for fundraising. A clear understanding of the scope of work to restore the landmark and a well-documented estimate of the cost to complete the restoration is critical to a successful fundraising campaign of the magnitude suggested by initial estimates. Based on our experience, it is unrealistic to set a deadline for fundraising before this has been accomplished. As indicated in the Statement of Official Action, Chain Reaction was designated as a Santa Monica landmark on July 9, 2012 based on the commission’s unanimous findings that it met five of the six criteria specified in our landmarks ordinance. Whether one personally likes the sculpture or not, it is representative of an era in Santa Monica politics, national politics and world politics. Like other designated structures, it tells a story which is an important aspect of our city’s heritage. We urge you to take the steps described in this letter to ensure that Chain Reaction is properly restored and preserved.

Center (BTVC), the proposed development on the former Paper Mate site on Olympic Boulevard, is before the Planning Commission again Wednesday night (Dec. 4) at City Hall for public review. Planning staff recommends moving this development forward, but staff has never met a development they didn’t like, even one that has as many major problems as this colossus. It’s been in the works since 2009 and described as “the packing boxes the Water Garden came in.” Although some of the space has changed from office to residential and various elements have been redesigned, the project, in the words of local architect Ron Goldman, is, “a residential village masquerading as a business park.” Hines, a Houston-based mega-developer, proposes 766,908 square feet of construction spread over five buildings as high as 84 feet. The project will contain 374,434 square feet of “creative office” space in three of the buildings. The residential portion will consist of 472 rental units and 26 artist live/work spaces in two buildings. Nearly 30,000 square feet of restaurant/retail space are proposed for the project. The site will also have a total of 87,083 square feet of open park space in five public areas. A 1,936-vehicle subterranean parking garage will contribute an estimated 7,585 new daily car trips, according to the Environmental Impact Report for the development. Plans also call for an extension of Nebraska Avenue between 26th and Stewart streets as well as two new north-south streets with traffic signals on Olympic. So, expect huge traffic and congestion increases among other negatives. Hines says its parking and traffic estimates are based on an (out-of-date) formula of 286 square feet of space for each office employee. However, last year, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, “The average for all companies for square feet per worker in 2017 will be 151 square feet. This is more consistent with a “creative office” concept which eliminates enclosed offices and cubicles for a more compact and interactive bullpen configuration. More employees equal more vehicles and more trips. Estimates are that when fully occupied, the total number of daily trips will be closer to 15,000 opposed to the 7,585 Hines claims. Even with the lower figures, the development will generate significant and unavoidable impacts at 25 intersections and on numerous streets in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles — impacts that neither Expo Light Rail and all the bicycle racks in the world can’t mitigate. Then there’s the jobs/housing imbalance. Since the previous Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) was adopted in 1984, over 9-million square feet of office and commercial space has been built in Santa Monica. This so-called imbalance is responsible for an estimated 100,000 to 175,000 people commuting here daily for jobs.

City Hall plans to correct the imbalance by building thousands of units of new housing — as if new residents/workers aren’t going to drive after they move here or even maintain long-term employment in Santa Monica and never commute in the future. Remember when we were told that all the new development will reduce daily rush hour travel? It’s all a bunch of hooey. But, it’s one reason why Hines was coerced to alter their development to accommodate 500 residential/live work rental units. The Planning Commission must demand serious reductions in the BTVC’s size and scope if a whole slew of negatives — like traffic congestion — are to be mitigated. Even if all of the “creative office” space were to become housing, there still would be serious traffic impacts. More traffic means more air pollution from vehicle exhaust. This development will substantially increase the demand for dwindling natural resources such as water and natural gas. The same with electricity, sewage and solid waste disposal capacity. There is absolutely no way this (and the raft of other smaller developments proposed around the city) can be called “sustainable” or “environmentally friendly.” The community benefits proposed, including 75 units of low-income/workforce housing, won’t offset the crowding, damage to the environment and our ability to get around town for decades to come. Commissioners need to set aside “social agenda” and do what’s right for all of us. Smaller is better. Much smaller is best! Speaking of other developments, the community meeting for the 500 Broadway development is Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 at the Main Library. This is one of the larger Downtown projects in the planning stages. The site is the Fred Segal store and parking lot. The proposal is for a seven-floor (84 feet) building with 250 residential units (40 studios, 126 one bedroom, 54 two bedroom and 30 three bedrooms,) with 39,500 square feet of ground-floor retail/restaurant and a 561 car underground garage. The total square footage is 303,750 square feet. The developer is DK Broadway, LLC/Thomas Properties Group, Inc. By the way, directly across at 501 Broadway is a proposed six-floor (76 feet) NMS Properties, mixed-use project with 65 apartments (three studio, 21 one bedroom, 24 two bedroom and 7 three bedroom units) and four levels of underground parking with 154 parking spaces. Add 6,040 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. But, 220 bike racks makes this a good project, hum? According to the Planning Department case list, this project is being redesigned. A single story retail shop is there now. There are also three similar developments and two hotels proposed within a couple hundred yards radius of Fifth Street and Broadway. And cleaning them up and preventing further damage can be challenging, since much of the contamination has accumulated over time and results from what is known as “non-point source” pollution, which accounts for as much as 60 percent of the water pollution in the U.S. “When it rains, fertilizer from lawns, oil from driveways, paint and solvent residues from walls and decks and even pet waste are all washed into storm sewers or nearby lakes, rivers and streams-the same lakes, rivers and streams we rely on for drinking water supply, boating, swimming and fishing,” reports the non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “Also, improper handling of materials around the house can lead to pollution.” According to NRDC, each of us can do our part to reduce this run-off pollution and thus help protect local waterways. For one, we can replace concrete and other hard surfaces around our homes with porous materials, so that rainwater drains naturally into the ground and not into pathways that lead it into waterways. We can landscape with native plants and natural fertilizers, and refrain from over-watering our lawns and gardens. And we can properly dispose of hazardous products (that is, not right down the drain), wash our cars at professional carwashes (where there are proper wastewater treatment procedures), recycle used motor oil, and use non-toxic alternatives for household chemicals whenever possible. Of course, there is only so much that individuals can do on their own. While pre-

venting pollution at the source is important, many waterways have so much legacy pollution in them already that they need to be cleaned up directly-no small job and typically way beyond the scope of a few individuals. Some municipal, county or state governments might be inclined to help, but getting friends and neighbors involved first is a good way to demonstrate community support. Also, local businesses, non-profit groups, youth centers and schools are often looking for ways to get people involved in community service projects, so asking around town might be the best way to enlist dozens or more volunteers. Another way to get the ball rolling is to sign up with American Rivers’ National River Cleanup program. Individuals, organizations and anyone interested in conducting a cleanup on their local river can register with the program and get free trash bags as well as assistance with media coverage, volunteer promotion and technical support. The program has helped more than a million volunteers participate in thousands of cleanups covering more than 244,500 miles of waterways across the U.S. since it began in 1991. “These cleanups have removed more than 16.5 million pounds of litter and debris from America’s rivers and streams,” reports American Rivers. 2012 was the most successful year to date in the history of the program, with 400+ registered cleanups, 92,500 volunteers nationwide, 3.5 million pounds of trash removed from American waterways, and 39,000 miles of waterway cleaned. The group is hoping 2013 will turn out to be another record year for the program.

Opening with $850,000, Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” failed to make an impressive impact at the box office. And apartment rents are also on the rise, the newspaper reported. The average rent on the Westside was $2,401 a month in the third quarter, up 5.3 percent from a year ago and nearly 20 percent from its low during the recession, according to commercial real estate brokerage Marcus & Millichap. The trend has some long-time residents worried that the eclectic vibe in Venice might be eclipsed by techie newcomers. “We want Venice to remain Venice,” said 35-year-old resident Briana Chalais. “We don’t want to be overtaken by all tech people.” The effect isn’t as pronounced as in San Francisco, where young, affluent workers at companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Twitter have driven up real estate prices. Jerry Jao, co-founder of Santa Monica startup Retention Science, said he wanted to buy a condo but decided to stay in his rented three-bedroom apartment with tworoommates. “Prices have gone up too much,” he said. “Everything on the Westside is too ridiculous.”

Harris has received “very positive feedback” from vendors about events of this similar size, like Roga, a run plus yoga, or Wake Up With the Waves, a children’s concert series. Both draw about 100 to the pier during hours that are typically slow for business. On Dec. 14, a slightly smaller group will make their own butter while exercising at the Butter Aerobics Holiday Jam. Some vendors have complained about some of the larger pier events, like last month’s comedy show, Festival Supreme, which brought a lot of bodies to the pier but not necessarily a lot of cash to businesses. The smaller events, like “Cuttlefish Hotel,” are a no-brainer, Harris said, because they draw people without adding stress to the pier. For Sand, who won a Tony for his acting in 1971, this is something of a homecoming: He used to live near the famous carousel.

He’d wake up from a deep sleep to the grating of the gears and the slow, twisting music. It’s also a homecoming for Brecht, the playwright who died in 1956. He moved to 26th Street, just off of Wilshire Boulevard in 1941 to escape the Nazis. “We’re going to have a big cuttlefish there with the pink lights continued as the suckers,” Sand said, pointing to the not-yet-existent lights that will guide theater-goers up the stairs on the south side of the Mariasol restaurant. “We’re doing all the murals on canvas. So like a circus look, carnival look. That right there is going to be Mac the Knife cutting somebody’s throat. Here’s going to be three beautiful women’s legs underneath the curtain.” He’s speeding up, daydreaming again but getting louder. He’s yelling over layers of sounds: a large machine pounds a piling down through the pier like a thumbtack into a bulletin board, seagulls wine, waves and wind fill the in the gaps of silence. “That’s why I want it,” he says. “I want people to have to sing over the waves.” “Kurt Weill at the Cuttlefish Hotel” opens on Friday at 7:30 p.m. It will continue for the next several weekends. It was an effort to attract shoppers before Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season. Those tactics drew bigger crowds, but failed to motivate Americans to spend. A record 141 million people were expected to shop in stores and online over the fourday Thanksgiving weekend that ended Sunday, up from last year’s 137 million, according to the results of a survey of nearly 4,500 shoppers conducted for The National Retail Federation. But total spending is expected to fall for the first time ever since the trade group began tracking it in 2006, according to the survey that was released on Sunday. Over the four days, spending fell an estimated 2.9 percent to $57.4 billion. Shoppers, on average, are expected to spend $407.02 during the four days, down 3.9 percent from last year. That would be the first decline since the 2009 holiday shopping season when the economy was just coming out of the recession. The survey underscores the challenges stores have faced since the recession began in late 2007. Retailers had to offer deep dis-

counts to get people to shop during the downturn, but Americans still expect those “70 percent off ” signs now during the uneven economic recovery. Stores may have only exacerbated that expectation this year. By offering bargains earlier in the season, it seems they’ve created a vicious cycle in which they’ll need to constantly offer bigger sales to get people to spend. That’s because shoppers who took advantage of “holiday” deals before Thanksgiving may have deal fatigue and are cautious about buying anything else unless it’s heavily discounted. “The economy spoke loud and clear over the past few days,” said Brian Sozzi, CEO and chief equities strategist at Belus Capital Advisors. “We are going to see an increase in markdowns.” Matthew Shay, president and CEO of The National Retail Federation, said that the survey results only represent one extended weekend in what is typically the biggest shopping period of the year. The combined months of November and December can account for up to 40 percent of retailers’ revenue. Overall, Shay said the trade group still expects sales for the combined two months to increase 3.9 percent to $602.1 billion. That’s higher than the 3.5 percent pace in the previous year. But analysts say that’s not likely to be the case in this still tough economic climate. “It’s pretty clear that in the current environment, customers expect promotions,” Shay said. “Absent promotions, they’re not really spending.” Take Tuesday Trasvina, 37, who said she’s been bombarded with holiday discounts since early November. Trasvina, a marketing coordinator, plans to spend $500 on holiday gifts, about a quarter of what she spent last year. “They’ve been stretching out this Black Friday thing so long,” said Trasvina, who was shopping with her husband on Friday at a Target store in Portland, Ore. “I just think the over-commercialization of the holiday has gotten to us.” At least a dozen major retailers — most of them for the first time — opened on Thanksgiving instead of on Black Friday, which is typically the biggest shopping day

of the year. Wal-Mart, Toys R Us and other retailers said on Friday that Thanksgiving crowds were strong. But the early start appeared to pull sales forward. Black Friday sales fell 13.2 percent from the previous year to $9.74 billion, according to Chicago-based technology firm ShopperTrak. But combined spending over Thanksgiving and Black Friday rose 2.3 percent to $12.3 billion compared with a year ago. A Kmart store in New York City that opened at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving and stayed open for 41 hour straight was packed on the holiday. Clothing was marked down 30 percent to 50 percent. Adriana Tavaraz, 51, headed there at about 4 p.m. and spent $105 on ornaments, Santa hats and other holiday decor. She saved about 50 percent. But it’s not likely Tavaraz will be back in stores too many more times this season. Money is tight this year because of rising costs for food and rent, and Tavaraz already spent much of her $200 holiday budget. “Nowadays, you have to think about what you spend,” she said. “You have to think about tomorrow.”
