Hot 8 Brass Band

New Orleans comes to the beach Hot 8 Brass Band leads the parade to the Twilight Concert Series he penultimate band playing at this Thursday’s Twilight Concert Series is none other than New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band. The group has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade, playing traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, and by infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. “I got a phone call from one of our musicians who was out there last year who said, ‘It’s very nice here’ so we are looking forward to it,” said Bennie “Big Bennie” Pete, the band’s leader and tuba player. The original Hot 8 Brass band formed in New Orleans back in 1992 when the members were in high school. “We were already in our school marching band, but we wanted to play more music. So

T

we just decided to start a brass band,” said Pete. In ’95 Pete had the makings of Hot 8 but it wasn’t quite an official band. “We were just starting to play festivals and concerts. We were still doing weddings back then,” said Pete. “After we graduated, a lot of guys went to college, a few guys got married, and there were only four of us left. There was another band that was on the verge of breaking up and there were four guys left in that band. So the four of us, plus the four of them merged together and we became The Hot 8 and just ran with it,” explained Pete. Since then members of the Hot 8 Brass Band have toured in Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Finland, England and Sardinia. The band performs annually at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and at world music and jazz festivals across the U.S. and Europe. Members of the band have been

featured in both Spike Lee documentaries, “When the Levees Broke and If God is Willing” and “Da Creek Don’t Rise.” The band was also featured in the second season of the HBO series, “Tremé.” Pete commented, “It was kind of a dream of mine to do this. [Playing live] is what we wanted to do, but we didn’t know if it was going to ever happen or when it was going to happen. And for us to still be together and see it come through is a blessing and it’s just wonderful to still be doing this and that it’s happening.” The band line-up also includes, Harry “Swamp Thang” Cook on bass drum, Terrell “Burger” Batiste, Raymond “Dr. Rackie” Williams and Al “Big Al” Huntley on trumpets, Jearreau “Couzin’” Fornett and Tyrus Chapman on trombones, and Clarence “Trixzey” Slaughter on saxophone. They recently appeared at The Apollo with Dr. John, Lou Reed, Nicolas Payton and

others for the annual Great Day in Harlem. The Hot 8 has released three critically acclaimed recordings and is featured on the latest Blind Boys of Alabama recording on Time-Life Records. Pete credits influences such as Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles for inspiring him and getting him into music because they were talented multi-instrumentalists. “Ray Charles, played piano and sax and harmonica so they really influenced me a lot. As did Gospel music and going to church. I would listen to a lot of hymns and it made me want to play the music for the people listening and not just myself," said Pete. “By performing it has a calming effect on the audience. A lot of people are going through hard times in their lives. When they hear the music it just soothes them. And we play some hymns and Gospel songs. The Gospel influence helps a lot of people,” said Pete.

Designing woman Leigh Collins behind Twilight Concert Series poster ith the Twilight Concert Series, much of the spotlight has shone on the musicians themselves. But another star has emerged, with as much talent and potential as some of the newer, burgeoning artists on the series. Graphic designer Leigh Collins, 27, first caught the attention of Santa Monica locals when she broke out as the winner of the Twilight Concert Series poster contest. Her winning design, titled “Living Each Moment” beat out 16 other worthy entries to become the visual cornerstone of the series’ advertising and public relations efforts this year. “She created a look and feel that has resonated with the media [and audience] far beyond our expectations,” says Craig Hoffman, the Santa Monica Pier’s director of partnerships and development. “Leigh is extremely talented and bright, and will no doubt be a creative force within the design industry.” Though Collins played around with different ideas, she knew from the start that she wanted the design to be bright, whimsical and illustrative. She began sketching a wave and realized this shape could be used to draw in the other elements of TCS “as the sweeping scene of the Pacific is the heart and soul of the pier.” The design is a cheerful whirl of summery colors, bringing the sunset, palm trees, bongos, trumpet and Ferris wheel to life. Collins says the sandy-colored background and typeface choice were inspired by a mental image she had of a wood-paneled beach shack circa 1974. Collins says she was thrilled when she found out she won and has her friends and family to thank for their support. The contest has added a welcome boost to her career. “I’m working freelance right now, so it’s a lot of coffee drinking and gazing longingly out the window of my apartment,” Collins says. “But I’m at a fabulous place in my career and

W

I couldn’t be happier.” Collins is originally from La Crosse, a small town in Wisconsin she says is “famous for its lovely summers, rowdy Oktoberfests and for housing the world’s largest six-pack of beer.” Collins comes from a family of fine artists or, rather, a family of male fine artists. She was the first girl in the family to venture into the art world, starting with portraits and figure studies when she was about 9 years old. The switch to computerbased art didn’t occur until she was in her 20s, but now she feels equally at home using digital programs to practice her craft as she does with paper and pencil. “The thing I love most about graphic design is that I’m free to play in any genre of art and design, and I’m afforded the speed to create more quickly and share with a broader audience,” she says. She drove out to California a little over a year ago with her boyfriend — and two dogs and a pet goldfish in tow — in a little Chevy “that guzzled as much oil as it did gas.” Now, the five of them live in a studio in Venice. Collins says she loves strolling around Santa Monica admiring the colors, architecture and landscape. “[Here by the beach] you’re in the middle of everything at the edge of the world, and while the crowds can be overwhelming for me at times, sometimes if I catch the tops of the buildings and the sparkling sea beyond it at the right time of evening, it can really feel like a magical place.” As for the series, Collins has nothing but praise and affection. “I think the series is so well loved by me and so many others because it’s free! Because of that it becomes a sort of meeting place, where a community that can feel so financially and socially divided can rub elbows and enjoy themselves as a community.”

Best Coast Plus No

Best Coast

Sept. 6 Combine the sophisticated chill of a New York City winter with the girlish, laid back romance of California in the summertime and what to you get? The answer is Best Coast, the latest musical endeavor by perennially cool, self-described “weird girl” Bethany Cosentino. Best Coast was born when Cosentino decided to come home to L.A. after a time in New York City, to get a fresh start at living in the place she knows best — California. Quickly garnering praise from critics and listeners with the single “Sun Was High (So Was I),” Cosentino was approached by UK-based label Blackest Rainbow, who released her now sold-out tape “Where the Boys Are.” A Los Angeles native, Cosentino grew tired of what she had grown up with and did what so many have done before — she picked up and left for the East Coast, specifically Brooklyn, with the intention of going to art school for creative writing. “I was like, I hate the beach, I hate flip

flops. I want to go to New York,” she said. But Brooklyn quickly turned out to be far different from what she had envisioned. “I realized that I actually liked all those things, they reminded me of home,” and life in New York was too cold, both literally and figuratively, with too many people trying way too hard, “it’s like, there are people in New York who look like they’re at the beach sometimes but it’s not real, it’s not the same.” Looking for a way to get a taste of her native land all the way in Brooklyn, Cosentino was drawn to the 1950’s and ‘60’s aesthetic of The Beach Boys and The Everly Brothers, which, she said, “made me happy.” Creating her own little Southern California in her bedroom wasn’t enough, however, and one weekend Cosentino decided enough was enough. “One weekend I just decided to leave New York. Two days later I was back in L.A.,” Cosentino said matter-of-factly. She started making music almost immediately, having been “inspired by the music I was listening to in New York,” Cosentino “wanted to be making the music I wanted to listen to.” Because of this, the project’s aesthetic is intended and natural, a combination of Cosentino’s influences and her inherent Californian-ness.
