Twilight Concert Series
A new take on Americana Jackie Greene is wise beyond his years
fter three exciting performances, the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concert Series will continue Thursday with a highly anticipated performer whose impeccable musicianship belies his relative youth. He may only be 31 years old, but singer-songwriter Jackie Greene has come a long way from his beginnings playing music in local bars as a teenager in Salinas, Calif. Touted as “The Prince of Americana” by the New York Times, Greene keeps his genre interesting, switching from rock ‘n’ roll to rhythm and blues with virtuosity. The California native learned to play guitar and piano by his teens and shortly thereafter began composing his own songs. He recorded a demo called “Rusty Nails” in his own garage. After graduating from high school, he immediately headed for Sacramento, where he became a part of the live music scene. Discovered at an open mic session in 2001, Greene recorded his debut album (for which he played most of the instruments) the year after and went on a college tour. The rest, as they say, is history. With seven albums of original work, an EP, DVD and a book of lyrics, including previously unreleased work, under his belt, Greene shows no signs of slowing down. Known for avid touring (about 100 to 125 dates a year), Greene has come to be known for putting on high-energy live shows with the likes of B.B. King, Huey Lewis and Buddy Guy at bigname venues and festivals across the country. After more than a decade of remaining committed to his artistry, Greene will bring his vibrancy back to the state where it all began, but to a new venue that is sure to embrace his authentic sound. He has been compared to Bob Dylan and The Band, though he never settles on a single, specific style. If he ever vacillates between playful and sorrowful, he never strays away from a signature soulfulness. Greene is continuing to pave his own path as a musician, and the road is filled with plenty of learning experiences. “Attempting to remove the ego from the writing process was an important step,” he says. “Destroying the notion that I was some troubled artist on the path to enlightenment … and once I began to kill this part of myself, I was able to write in the voices I wanted to write in. I could let the singer exist in many realities.” Greene recently released his sixth solo album in 2010, the pop-infused “Til The Light Comes,” which followed on the heels of his acclaimed 2008 release “Giving Up The Ghost,” his first album for 429 Records. The title “Giving Up The Ghost” is a kind of coming-to-terms with himself as an artist and a recognition of his place in a demanding music world. “The phrase refers to the destruction of certain notions and practices that I used to hold in high esteem,” he says. “I’m just sorta sick of being the kid with the harmonica rack. I don’t want to be Bob Dylan.”

Soda Jerks Soda Jerks is a slice of Americana that oozes West Coast flavor, from the ocean to the Hollywood sign. This desert-first drink shop serves up shakes and sundaes with names like The PCH, which is one scoop rocky road, one scoop chocolate chip, doused with marshmallow and hot fudge, The Sting, one scoop toasted almond, one scoop espresso, slathered with coffee syrup and hot fudge, and The Munchkin, made up of any scoop and topping. Today, grandson Kevin McCaferty is happy to make soda jerking a Santa Monica standard. “We are very happy to be on the pier,” McCaferty said. “We like to say that Soda Jerks is the coolest place in L.A. to get a scoop of ice cream.” For more information, call (310) 393-7632.
Santa Monica Pier Seafood Santa Monica Pier Seafood’s self-service dining is a hassle free way to enjoy seafood by the sea. And there’s more

seafood here than you could shake a fish stick at, everything from shellfish to sushi, all comfortably located by the Pacific Ocean itself. For more information, call (310) 394-9683.
Pier Burger If you’re in the mood for some good old fashioned Americana cooking while strolling down the boardwalk, Pier Burger is the spot for you. Pier Burger, as its name suggests, grills up burgers, chicken and locally caught seabass sandwiches, all slathered in homemade sauce. There are also quarter pound hot dogs and plates of fries, and for dessert, try any of the nostalgic shakes, floats, sundaes and concretes, each one crafted from Pier Burger’s frozen custard, which is prepared on site each day. The custard comes in classic vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, but be ready to try the “flavor of the day,” a special batch of frozen custard that’s different each time you visit. Amadou & Mariam
Aug. 2 The arrival of “Wayward Angel,” the extraordinary latest album from vocalist and songwriter Kasey Chambers, takes the acclaimed Australian artist into some of the most personal, heartfelt and emotionally resonant realms of her career. “I found myself writing songs that were closer to my roots,” Kasey explains on the origins and inspiration of “Wayward Angel.” “I was drawing directly from my own life as well as from the people around me and the characters I met on the road. The music came out pretty much the way it wanted, more organic and spontaneous than anything I’d done before.” The sharp focus and expressive intent of “Wayward Angel” does indeed connect. “I didn’t really think much about a certain style or sound,” she continues. “I tried to just let it flow and, even though the writing came together over a long period of time, it all felt very natural. I guess there is just more me in this music.”

Week 8 employees. This night, these accomplished artists, who perform live nightly in a Cirque du Soleil production, will demonstrate their high degree of creativity and passion by performing their own original music compositions and arrangements for this very special concert. Week 7
Amadou & Mariam Plus Portland Scene-Stealers Y La Bamba
Aug. 16 To expand your horizons while remaining true to your roots is a challenge that Amadou & Mariam have risen to — and consistently met — throughout their career. Each new album has found the husbandand-wife duo from Mali boldly moving forward and breaking fresh ground, while at the same time preserving their instantly recognizable trademarks: the exquisite song craft, Amadou’s thrilling electric blues guitar and the magical interplay of their two voices, which first brought them popularity. In recent years, Amadou & Mariam have toured with Coldplay and U2 and jammed with musical heroes David Gilmour and Johnny Marr. They’ve performed at a Nobel Peace Prize concert in honor of Barack Obama, and played at the opening ceremonies of the last two FIFA world cups. Manu Chao and Damon Albarn have lent their production skills to their records and they have worked with some of the most innovative names in contemporary rock music via Albarn’s “Africa Express” and other cross-cultural projects, such as “L’Afrik C’est Chic.”
Alex Cuba Plus Lucky 7 Mambo
Aug. 23 Alex Cuba is a rebel. “When it comes to creativity, I need to go to places I’ve never been before,” he says. With the wanderlust of a world traveler, the Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter explores new sonic spaces on “Ruido En El Sistema/Static in the System.” Following the compass points of rock, soul, pop, and Latin-funk on his fourth album, Cuba continues his journey as a critically acclaimed independent artist who’s charted his own destiny across the world stage while earning a growing legion of devoted listeners at each new juncture.
Week 9
Hot 8 Brass Band Plus The Gumbo Brothers
Aug. 30 New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade. The band plays the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world. The members of the Hot 8 Brass Band were born and raised in New Orleans and many began playing together in high school. What makes the Hot 8 so special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn instruments.

Best Coast Plus No
Sept. 6 Combine the sophisticated chill of a New York City winter with the girlish, laid back romance of California in the summertime and what to you get? The answer is Best Coast, the latest musical endeavor by perennially cool, self-
described “weird girl” Bethany Cosentino. Best Coast was born when Cosentino decided to come home to L.A. after a time in New York City, to get a fresh start at living in the place she knows best — California. Quickly garnering praise from critics and listeners with the single “Sun Was High (So Was I),” Cosentino was approached by UK-based label Blackest Rainbow, who released her now sold-out tape “Where the Boys Are.”
