Who Should Go to College Clinic? Just about everyone.

Our figures include tuition, fees, room and board. These figures are based upon the current school year.

For freshmen and sophomores it’s a chance to get a head start on planning.

Scholarship Information

Juniors and seniors can get specific questions answered face-to-face. If you already know where you’d like to go, it’s a chance to make a good impression. Take a parent. You know how they like to be involved and may even think of questions you haven’t.

How can this Guide Help Me?

Read through the catalogs, look at the web site, talk to the reps, make a visit and then ask yourself, "Do I want to learn and live here for four years?"

Approximate Cost per Year

Valuable information regarding each college is provided within this guide. Please use it to better inform yourself and to help narrow your research of colleges. The following information is included for those Colleges attending the Clinic.

Location How far from home do you want to be? What about travel ? Do you prefer a certain part of the country? A certain climate? Do you want to strike out on your own or be with people you already know?

Undergraduate Enrollment Give some thought to how you can best succeed in terms of the faculty to student ratio and the student population.

Middle 50% Test Scores Many colleges require either the SAT or ACT tests. Average freshman scores are listed to show you where you place amongst your peers. Be aware that some colleges also require SAT Subject Tests. Check the college’s website for exact requirements. Test dates are listed on the inside back cover of this guide.

Tremendous scholarship opportunities exist at many colleges, making it easier to consider an out-of-state or private school. Check with the college to clarify financial aid packages.

Web Address You can get a lot of information about a school from its web site. To get a more detailed perspective, search student web pages, the campus newspaper, sites provided by various departments and faculty, and sites that compare schools.

What is the College Clinic Planner & How do I use it? To fully utilize the College Clinic resources, please use the planner provided on page 12. AND please, remember to bring it with you to College Clinic. Before College Clinic Mark the schools you want to learn more about, noting which ones are giving in-room presentations and which ones have browsing tables. Write them in the planner in the appropriate spots. When you arrive Pick up a location chart which will show you specific college locations and look at information boards for last minute updates. Note these locations on the planner to be fully prepared. Note the locations on the planner to be fully prepared.

3

How’s College Clinic Set Up? Each college chooses either a "room" format or a "browsing" format. The "room" colleges will be making presentations in designated classrooms. Please check the location chart (available at the entrances) for the colleges exact location. Colleges making presentations do so on the half hour at 6:35, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. Please enter these sessions only at the beginning and stay for the entire discussion. The colleges with browsing tables are located in the gyms and cafeteria and can be visited anytime between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. Please check the floor plan for exact locations.

What about Parking? Park and walk from the SME lots off 75th Street or Mission, the P.V. Pool and Tennis lots off Delmar, or at these locations: Medical & Professional Building 7501 Mission Road Office Building 7455 Mission Road Prairie Village Office Center 7301 Mission Road Due to high school lots filling quickly, a free shuttle bus runs from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. every 15 minutes from: Brighton Gardens 71st and Mission Road Do not block fire lanes or use City Hall or Police Department lots. You will be ticketed.

Questions to Ask the Reps To find out‌ 1. What makes this the school for me? What makes this school special or unique? What are the strongest areas of study? What are new or special programs? What is the student/faculty ratio? What are the opportunities for study abroad? What student activities are available?

2. Am I likely to be accepted? What is the average GPA of those accepted? What percentage is in the top 10 percent of their high school class? In the top 50 percent?

3. How likely am I to get financial aid? What types of financial aid can I apply for? What percentage of freshmen receive financial aid? What percentage continue to get aid after freshman year? What is the average freshman grant/ loan? What job opportunities exist on and off campus?

4. Where will I live? Are students required to live on campus? For how long? What is student housing like? What kind and how much off-campus housing is there? What percentage of students live on/ off campus? Where do fraternity and sorority members live?

We expect approximately 5,000 attendees, please plan your visit accordingly. Brighton Gardens is a great option for park and ride. Shuttles leave every 15 minutes. Please avoid parking in the City Hall or Police Department lots, as this will result in a ticket.

Do you want to go to college with your high school class mates or strike out on your own?

How do I Find Out More? 1. Counseling Office: Check there for college planning guides and other information, including web sites. Some of our favorites: For scholarship & financial aid info finaid.org, collegenet.com/mach25, and fastweb.com For testing info ets.org, act.org and collegeboard.com For a virtual college tour campustours.com For colleges with a desired major petersons.com 2. College Guides: There are several guides that do a good job comparing colleges:

COME PREPARED! This is your best chance to ask important questions.

• The Insiders Guide to Colleges • Barrons’ Profiles of American Colleges • The College Handbook • Fiske Guide to Colleges • Choosing the Right College • Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You’re Not A Straight-A Student • The Unofficial Unbiased Guide to the 331 Most Interesting Colleges 3. Course Catalogs: They will give you an idea of what’s available but are not the best way to compare schools. Courses listed may be very different from how they’re described or no longer offered. At some schools, student organizations rank courses and professors. If you visit a school, try to find such ranking. It could give you a more realistic idea of what courses-and the people who teach them-are really like.

4. College Visit: Try to make at least one visit when school is in session. In addition to the formal interview and tour, arrange to sleep in a dorm and eat in the dining hall. Visit some classes, attend a game and visit the student union. Talk to as many students as possible to obtain different perspectives. 5. Your Counselor: A big part of your school counselor's job is to help with college selection. The more your counselor knows you and your college needs, the more they can help. 6. Your instincts: Above everything else, trust your instincts. If something tells you this is not the right place, it’s probably not. Choose a school where you can picture yourself living, learning and successfully completing your degree.

Honors Programs As the cost of education rises, students are finding an alternative to a big name school in the honors programs offered at many state universities. These programs can offer the best of both worlds: the class size and student teacher ratio of a small college with the resources and facilities of a large research institution. Many honors programs give students the option of living with other honors students and some even put classrooms and faculty offices in the building where the students live. Many institutions entice students with stipends and scholarships, an opportunity worth considering.
