HONORING VETERANS Right: Working in the Elmwood Cemetery with his Boy Scout troop, freshman Jack Longan helps reset Civil War tombstones for an Eagle Scout project. “We dug around [the gravestones] and then we would pull them out of the ground and fill the hole back in with gravel.” Longan said. “Before we reset them, the headstones were only showing three inches and you couldn’t read anything. When we finished, two feet [of the gravestones] were showing and they were cleaned off so they looked brand new and you could read them.” Photo by Mary Longan.

DANCING FOR JOY Right: During a recreational soccer game, senior Jeff Rutherford celebrates with Dancing Lion teammate senior Alex Cox. “We always practice headers and corners, but I never thought I would make the shot in a game,” Rutherford said. “I headed in [the ball] off the corner [kick], which I’d never actually done before and will probably never do again.” Photo by Anna Petrow.

Students describe their favorite TV shows and why. FOOD CHALLENGE

HOUSE

The office

JERSEY SHORE

24

NCIS

“My favorite show this year was Food Network Challenge. They do a different thing each time. One of my favorite cakes was the Disney’s villain cakes. Captain Hook’s cake was neat-o; I want one for my wedding.”

“House M.D. has been my favorite show this year. It has the same plot over and over, but it never gets boring. Dr. House is always right, and always ends up saving the patients.”

“My favorite show is the Office. It’s so funny and I love the actors. Steve Carell is my favorite because he’s so funny and stars in my favorite movies as well. My favorite episode is when Pam has her baby. I watch it every week.”

“My favorite show is Jersey Shore. It’s so real and the people on the show taught me a sense of style. I’ve really learned how stylish people dress. I also learned how to do a proper fist pump and when the right time to fist pump is.”

“24 is my favorite TV show this year. It’s so suspenseful with a lot of plot twists. I think that’s what keeps me interested. I watch it every Monday and during my spare time on Netflix.”

“[NCIS] is a good action show and they have really good characters. I like all of the really intense action shows because the action makes you want to keep watching even though you know, deep down, the final result of the show.”

CREATING THE BEATS Right: Clashing his symbols on the track, sophomore John Horvath practices with the drumline during first semester for marching band. “It’s fun to get out of school [for band] because you’re there all day and we get a little break to go outside and walk around,” Horvath said. “The most fun part was probably on Lancer Day, marching down Mission Road. The drumline played Cadences and I liked it because there are multiple beats going on at once and to see the people cheering for us was cool.” Photo by Mary Longan.

Students share their personal stories of suffering from the H1N1 Swine Flu.

“I only had [the swine flu] for about a week and I was at the hospital for two days. I knew I was really sick because I woke up in the middle of the night.”

“I had [the swine flu] while I was at camp in Colorado. The first three days were the worst because I felt awful. I had to stay quarantined in a room with about twelve other girls who had it. “

“It was kind of exciting, but I wasn’t going to die or anything. I got out of school from Tuesday through Friday. The doctor didn’t do much except ask if I felt better. It was a pretty normal sickness. It’s not as bad as people think.”

“I didn’t get [the swine flu] very baddly, so it wasn’t as scary as I thought it’d be. I got a bad cold and couldn’t go to sleep. I was out of school for a while, and when I came back all my friends were cracking jokes.”

“[The swine flu] wasn’t too bad. I had already been sick when I found out. I was past the worst part. There were a lot of body aches and I was out for a week and a half.”

“I did have the swine flu earlier this year. At first, I just had a really bad fever so I wasn’t really sure what it was. When I found out that I had swine flu I wasn’t too surprised because a lot of people had it at school.”

WHIP-IN BUTT Right: Playing in the SHARE Dodgeball tournament as a ‘Hurl Scout’, senior Becca Clay stares down her opponents at the opposite end of the gym. “I got the name Iron Maven,” Clay said. “It is meant to be intimidating, but it was kind of a joke since I’m not that intimidating. All of the teams were competitive, especially when we played the girls from our grade. [My team] ended up winning two games and losing one.” Photo by Eliza McCormick.

Concert Craze Students rave about their favorite concerts of the year. ELTON JOHN

JOURNEY & DEF LEOPARD

Marilyn Manson

JOHN MAYER

“It was the first big concert that I had been to at the Sprint Center, so the atmosphere and environment was really awesome. It was very exciting and the audience was really energized.”

“I have seen a pretty good amount of people in concert, but I think Journey and Def Leopard definitely rocked the hardest. It was an awesome concert because it was two big bands playing together.”

“A really memorable concert was Marilyn Manson. I love him. Each time I’ve seen him I was front row. When he came out and the curtain dropped I almost fainted. I was screaming so loudly!”

“I never really liked his music before I saw him in concert but he was really good and we were super close to the stage. I thought his jokes were really funny because I have the same kind of humor as him. Overall, it was a great time.”

MANIC MONDAYS Right: Fastening his shoes to ready himself for a ten minute jog, junior Carter Kerr prepares himself for another day of intense wrestling training.“Every Monday we have top [holding down the opponent], bottom [working out from under the opponent], and neutral [all work on feet],” Kerr said. “Then, throughout the week we focus on one of those for a whole day. It’s all really intense and it’s a lot of work, but Coach Chip Ufford is like my dad, He’s a hell of a coach.” Photo by Eliza McCormick.

Don’t rain on my parade

maybe this time

“My favorite song is “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. I just thought it was really pretty and really unique and different from the other Glee songs. It was a solo instead of a group and it didn’t incorporate all of the people but it was still really strong so it was kind of different.”

““Maybe This Time” is my favorite Glee song because it’s my favorite style of music, which is jazzy. It’s also my favorite song to dance to in my car because it has a lot of soul to it and it’s fun.”

ME AND OLIVIA SINGING Right: Singing ‘Me and Charlie Talking’ by Miranda Lambert, juniors Olivia Harlan and Samantha Bartow sing a duet at the Cool School event. “I wasn’t really that nervous because Olivia and I sing together all the time and we sing that song all the time, too,” Bartow said.“I knew that people wouldn’t judge [us] and I knew that it would be a lot of fun. My favorite part was probably watching other people during American Idol. It’s the whole experience of being up that early and seeing everyone show up [that I liked].” Photo by Anna Petrow.

BOOK BREAK Right: Browsing through a Junie B. Jones book, sophomore Caroline Nick looks at different novels at the book fair with her English class. “I liked the wide selection of different types of books.” Nick said. “My Spanish teacher also had us order cappuccinos and they came up and delivered them to us, it was delicious.” Photo by Mary Longan.

East students talk about their favorite trends of 2010. WEDGES

JEGGINGS

RAIN BOOTS

BUTTON DOWNS

FLANNEL SHIRTS

TOMS

“I enjoy wedges because they are casual and cute and they can be casual or dressy. I wear them sometimes to school. I wear aquamarine colors and other stuff that is earthy.”

“After I bought my first pair of jeggings I wasn’t limited like jeans limit how easily I could move; and I think jeggings are unique looking.”

“I love rain boots. They’re so cute and fashionable and they keep your feet dry and warm. I have a pink Coach pair. I saw them in the store and they were cute, unique and different.”

“I’ve noticed a lot of girls wearing regular button downs with the sleeves rolled up. I like the look. It’s not too fancy but it’s better than just wearing a t shirt.”

“They make me stand out in the hallways and it makes me different than most of the kids at East. They are comfortable and cool. Comfortable because it is a button up and you can roll up the sleeves. I like to roll them up and I don’t button them all the way up to the top.”

“I have the green TOMS. I just heard about what they did and thought it was really cool so I decided to get a pair and help them out. I call them my ‘socks with arch support’ because that’s what they feel like. Also, I think its cool how they stand for something.”

STRETCHING FOR SUCCESS Right: Getting ready to run before a cross country practice, senior Harper Coulson stretches out his arms and shoulders on the field. “We do stretches for our legs like toe touches and the ‘Hollywood stretch’ where we pose like models with our backs out.” Coulson said. “On Fridays, we do this thing called Course Run where we run along the streets. My favorite moment [of cross country] was knowing that I’ll never have to run cross country again.” Photo by Danielle Norton.

SERVING UP DONATIONS Right: Serving a customer, math teacher Shelby Krumm takes part in Culver’s Night, which is an event that supports Culver’s and raises money for East by having East teachers work there. “I had always wanted to help out with Culver’s Night,” Krumm said. “It’s a great opportunity to see students outside of the school environment and it’s a bonus that it’s for a great cause.” Photo by Eliza McCormick.

Students recall famous songs of the year that get stuck in their head.

BAD ROMANCE

“I really like Lady Gaga. [“Bad Romance”] is a huge song and it gets me pumped. When I listen to it, it makes me feel like I can take on anything and I get really excited. I listen to it way too much.” Patrick Riggin 10

PARTY IN THE USA

“This is just a really upbeat song and I can’t stop singing it. It gets stuck in your head and it’s just a fun song. Some people find it annoying, but I find it amazing.” Adam Lowe 10

IMMA BE

“I don’t like when Fergie singsshe’s like a turn off for me. I kind of like when music gets stuck in my head, though. In the middle of class it keeps me going. It helps me stay awake.” Bucky Kessinger 9

FIREFLIES

“I hear it on the radio all the time. At first I really liked it, but since it’s so popular, it’s started to get annoying. I’ve heard it so many times that that ruined it for me. It has a catchy beat, but enough is enough.” Madeline McMahill 10

I DON’T WANT TO WAIT

TIK TOK

“It gets stuck in my head because Taylor Haviland and I used to sing it in cross country and track all the time. Now, whenever I go to track I start to sing it. Taylor and I would try to sing it in this high falsetto voice. It was awful.”

“We danced to [Tik Tok] for drill team, so sometimes it would get stuck in my head afterwards. I don’t really like the song anymore, but that’s probably from listening to it, dancing to it, and hearing it every day.”

SMUDGY SOURCES Right: During a trip to the library with her drawing class, sophomore Marlena Smith switches projects from student’s in Art Foundations with her own piece. “There were some really cool art pictures that the people made with chalk,” Smith said. “I was really afraid because I kept smudging them, but I got to put in a few portraits including one of a girl in my class. It’s the best one I’ve made.” Photo by Andrea Zecy.

AN UNEXPECTED WIN Right: Joking with her dad, senior Sarah Are walks across the gym floor at the Sweetheart Nominee Assembly. “It was really fun walking out because my dad was there,” Are said. “I kept teasing him about how this would be the only time he would ever be on a high school basketball court. I was the first one out on the court so I was positioned in the corner and I could watch all the other girls. When calling all the names, I totally forgot I was a part of it because I was watching all the other names get called.” Photo by Brook Barnes.

Students reflect on the death of pop idol Michael Jackson.

“I never cried about his death, but at the same time I realized that the world would miss one of the greatest music personalities. His death caused me to pay attention more to his music because I never had the chance to examine it before. “

“At first I thought it was another publicity stunt like he did before to make money, but then I found out it was actually true. I was sad because he was an inspiration to all of us and changed the music industry forever.”

“I was lifeguarding at Mission Hills Country Club when it happened. They were playing a lot of his music and I didn’t know he had died, so I was a little confused about it. It was all kind of an overload.”

“My friend was the one that told me [about his death] and I thought she was joking. I didn’t actually realize they were serious until I turned on the radio and they were talking about it. I was completely shocked.”

“When I found out he had died on the news, I immediately thought back to my childhood and how “Beat It” was my favorite song for two years. When I heard of the public judging him it made me really sad to realize how easily people can give up on their idols.”

“Unfortunately, I didn’t listen to his music when he was alive, but when he died I went online to sample some of his works. I found an album that was amazing and before I knew it I had purchased seven Michael Jackson albums.”

EGGING IT UP Right: During her Watercolor class with Mr. Filbeck, sophomore Hanna Lingenfelter plans out her project before she begins. “I start out visualizing [what I want to do] in my head and then I make about five or so sketches,” Lingenfelter said. “A lot of my projects are inspired by my dreams. Filbeck told us that that’s a good place to get inspiration. One project I really enjoyed doing was a surrealism project and mine was inspired from a dream. It was of a duck on fire, and around it there were raining eggs.” Photo by Mary Longan

CALLING THE SHOTS Right: Blowing her whistle on a team, senior Mallory Kirby calls a foul during the Dodgeball Tournament. “All the SHARE Executives had to referee for the games,” Kirby said. “I wouldn’t have played [the game], so I [didn’t] missed out. Everyone was really competitive and everyone was yelling. It was very chaotic. The final games were the most fun to watch but calling the fairs and not being biased was the hardest.” Photo by Eliza McCormick.

With prices going up everywhere, students describe how the economic crisis has affected them. TICKET Prices

Gas prices

“It makes me sad that [ticket] prices have gone up because you have to pay more to see movie in theaters. It’s always better to see films in theaters because its bigger and louder and more of an experience.”

“I remember when I was in 6th grade, a $3.49 buffet is what the commercial said. Later, it jumped to $4.99 which I thought was kind of wierd. I’ve watched the prices jump even though they use the same catchy tune to market it.”

“It is really annoying that the movie prices have raised because I can watch the same movie at home for a lot cheaper. I will go to movies on special occasions but now I just try to go to matinee or daytime movies.”

“Whenever I go to the gas station to fill up my Jeep Grand Cherokee it costs around $50. I have to pay for gas with my own money and I don’t have a job, so filling up my tank is like burning money. But driving gives me freedom, so I guess there’s a price for freedom.”

COLOPHON After hours of brainstorming last summer at the Gloria Shields All-American Publications Workshop in Dallas, Texas, our staff came up with the this year’s theme. During a single school year, even the smallest things leave an impression on a student, and each student leaves his mark on the school. Our responsibility as a yearbook staff is to capture specific moments and the impressions they left, so that they can be remembered for years to come. We worked to develop our theme through copy, design, and photography. Each spread has a coverage bar on the right side that moves downwards each month, "impressing" deeper as the year progresses. This coverage bar allows students to reflect on specific people, classes or events that have left an impression on them, things that they will always remember or events that have changed the way they think. This same kind of quote is seen on our monthly division pages. This year, we added 24 more pages to the book by adding a second spread to our division pages. This allowed us to further develop our theme and cover more students by including their opinion, or "impression" of the activities covered that month. We also wanted a clean, magazine-style design. We encouraged designers to use negative space, avoid making spreads look text-heavy. To unify the color throughout the book, colors were matched using the "Unique" color palettes from Leatrice Eiseman's Color: Messages & Meanings. While colors were first pulled from photos on the spread, they were then matched to their Pantone equivalents to ensure their accuracy. We used white text on a colored box to give the idea that the text is stamped or pressed down into the box, and photos and text boxes were often pushed down, or “impressed”. Photos also unify the book. Throughout the theme pages, photos fade along the top and bottom, leaving a fading impression. By including small "detail shots" of objects related to our spreads, we captured the image that accompanies a memory - the image that remains in a student’s mind. By turning both detail shots and mugs into blue duotone images, we integrated our school color throughout the book. Our 500-page book is printed by Walsworth Publishing Company on Liberty Matte Paper at the Walsworth plant in Marceline, Missouri. We used Gill Sans Light font for our body copy text and captions and BentonSans Regular for our sidebar quotes. For most of our headlines and division pages, we used the font Beton. Adobe InDesign CS3 was the program we worked used on Macintosh computers to design all of our spreads, and we edited our pictures in Photoshop using levels, curves, and burning and dodging. Photographers worked with Nikon cameras, predominantly D70s for starting photographers, and D90s and D300s for photo editors. We made PDFs of every spread using the program Enfocus Instant PDF. We then uploaded everything through Walsworth Connect. There are countless people who have sacrificed their time and patience for our book, but Mrs. Tate and Morgan have probably been the biggest victims of our 500-page publication. We all appreciate the support and patience you two had for our book this year. We would also like to thank Mrs. Tate the SM North staff for sharing your journalism room with us. DeBe Bramley and Bill Boley, your encouragement and after-school supervision helped make the yearbook possible. Thanks also to the fifth floor janitors (especially Sam Miller) that put up with our late nights and messy room. We would like to thank our Walsworth sales representative John Kelley

“IMPRESSION.”

and customer service representative Jolene Christy for their constant support. John, you answered our daily phone calls and never-ending questions, and were willing to come up to East at any time to solve our problems. Jolene, your constant reassurances and reminders encouraged us to keep doing our best. We owe big thanks to Ben Eukel, our “tech guy”. We apologize for finding your cell phone and work number and calling you on the weekends for emergency computer advice, but thank you for putting up with us and our constant technical glitches. We are grateful for your time and effort. Thanks to all of the parents who stayed after school with us, brought us dinner (especially Oklahoma Joe’s) and let us borrow your kids for so many hours. We appreciate every way that you contributed to helping us produce this book. We would like to give a special thanks to Lori Sherk, who organized every deadline dinner, stayed late with us several times and put up with a very moody, stressed out daughter this year. This publication never would have been finished without the help of every single member of our staff. You all put up with our occasionally cranky, irritable moods, and we appreciate that. Everyone worked hard to make the book the quality that it is. Also, thanks to those of you that chose to join in on the occasional dance parties and deadline-dinner gossip that lightened the mood. We have loved getting to know all of you this year, and we wish the best of luck to those of you who are returning next year. We cannot thank the Harbinger staff enough for all of their help this year. We’re thankful for Tim’s copy editing and answering late-night AP style questions, Phoebe’s design expertise, and Kevin and Kat’s stories. Thanks to you Harbies for sharing with us your food, computers, gossip, and witty comments. We are honored to share a room with such a talented staff – whether it’s your publication, your website or your broadcasts, you constantly amazed us this year. We appreciate you support and your help. Especially you, Michael Stolle. Teachers, thank you for letting us borrow your students during class for last-minute quotes and interviews. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we could not have covered so many students without your cooperation. We also would like to thank coaches for letting their players take time out of practice to help us out with our publication. Thank you, Dr. Krawitz, for sending out achievement letters every time anyone on our staff won any kind of award. Your encouragement inspired us to continue to work hard. Thanks also to Mrs. Gayle O’Grady and everyone in the office for giving us countless classroom numbers when we needed them. We would like to thank all of our friends and family for tolerating our yearbook-induced mood swings and for listening to our endless rants about deadline stress. We know you guys get sick of hearing it, and we appreciate you putting up with us. Most importantly, we thank Tate, our fabulous journalism advisor. You put up with so much feminine drama; we honestly don’t know how you handle it. Comments such as “it’s not workin’ for me,” or, “it’s killin’ it” let us know when we need to redesign, rewrite or reshoot. We appreciate all of your help and advice, and if we have learned anything, it’s that you’re almost always right, even if we don’t want to admit it. If it weren’t for your perfectionist standards, our book would never be the quality that it is. You have inspired all of us to accomplish more than we ever thought possible. All these people have really impressed us with their constant support, and we hope that this book will impress you.

EVERYTIME WE TOUCH Below: In the East cafeteria, which was decorated with a Mardi Gras theme, senior Veronica Kerr dances with her friends Jessie Sykes and Phoebe Unterman on the night of WPA.The dance was more energetic than past years, and seniors, especially, had a blast. “This year’s WPA was way more fun as a senior because everyone just let loose and had a good time,” Kerr said. “Plus the group we went with was great. We were definitely singing to ‘Everytime We Touch’ by Cascada. We got really into it. We don’t usually do things like that, but it was the end of the dance and we went all out!” Photo by Lindsay Hartnett.

BIG EXPECTATIONS Below:After the varsity girls’ basketball team wins Substate, senior Alison Stephens cheers with her teammates. They were nervous before the game and felt pressure to win. “The game was intense, and everyone expected us to win,” Stephens said. “It was a great feeling because we all worked together and went in expecting the worst but hoping for the best. We worked our hardest and fulfilled everyone’s expectations.” Photo by Anna Petrow.

SOMEBODY’S EYES Below: In a scene of the beginning of this year’s musical ‘Footloose,’ juniors Emily Welter and Julie Chalfant sing ‘Somebody’s Eyes.’ In this scene, the two girls who play the parts of Urleen and Wendy Jo, who are the main characters’ (Ariel Moore, played by Lois Wetzel) best friends, discuss how awesome Chicago would be to live in, compared to their small town of Bomont. “It was kind of a mysterious song because we were telling the lead character about life in the small town,” Welter said. “It was a really fun song to perform because in the end there was a lot of belting high notes. That made it hard but still a good experience. Plus we loved wearing the off-shoulder sweaters.” Photo by Anna Petrow.

A year is made up of moments. It is a series of events that leaves a mark, makes an impression and defines a year in your life. Whether it be the fifth State title in six years for the boys’ swim team, a hard-fought robotics victory, singing in an ancient Venetian cathedral surrounded by 160 of your peers or waking up at 5 a.m. with the Chick-fil-A cow to support our “Cool School”, each little moment impresses on our lives. IMPRESSION WHO: when: where: why:

Hauberk Staff 12:30 a.m., April 14th, 2010 Room 520 To leave a lasting impression. SING ALONG At the first away varsity basketball game of the year against SM West, seniors Sam Logan and Jake Fleming attempt to pump up the student section. The game went into three overtimes and ended in a 72-68 defeat for the Lancers. “Jake and I really wanted to get everyone pumped up, so we made a chant saying, ‘If you’re winning and you know it, clap your hands’,” Logan said. “After that, the West kids were kind of thrown off guard, which made it a very hostile second half between student sections. Even though we lost after three overtimes, I felt like Jake and I did a great job of keeping our section going along with help from other seniors.” Photo by Anna Petrow.

VISUAL INSPIRATION Above: During a Studio Art field trip to the Nelson-Atkins Museum, senior Gaby Thompson looks at contemporary art in the Bloch Building. “I’m always fascinated by Wayne Thiebaud’s art,”Thompson said. “Color and the way he does things is so different from other artists. I like drawing realistically, and that’s what his paintings look like. Except when you look closer, it doesn’t look as realistic because of all the colors he uses.” Photo by Anna Petrow. FROM BRASS TO CLASS Below: At the winter band concert in December, senior Connor Callahan plays his solo on the tenor sax. For the concert, the jazz band members wore tuxedos. “It was different wearing tuxes because jazz band had never worn them to a concert before,” Callahan said. “It was quite warm, but the tuxes were classier than the sweaters we normally wear to concerts.” Photo by Max Stitt.

STAGE FRIGHT Back Cover: During the ‘Footloose’ musical playcuts, junior Julie

Chalfant performs in the opening scene. “Before the opening song, I was really nervous,” Chalfant said. “[Junior Olivia Mansfield] and I were pacing backstage to try to lose the nerves.” Photo by Anna Petrow.

PROGRESSIVE TEAM Back Cover: Senior Katy Kettler practices with the rest of the gymnastics team in the gym.“Gymnastics was really fun and progressive,” Kettler

said. “It was a really good year, and the team was closer and worked well together. There was a really good team dynamic.” Photo by Nicole Luby. SPRINT AHEAD Back Cover: At Cross Country practice, sophomore Nathan Are pushes himself hard to stay in shape. “I realized that if I worked really hard, I could compete with JV at races,” Are said. “I tended to run faster in JV races, because other faster runners were constantly pushing me throughout the race.” Photo by Danielle Norton.

LONE READER Left: Listening to indie musician Regina Spektor and reading The House at Riverton, freshman Zoe Brian waits by the senior exit for her ride home. “I like sitting there because not many people come by,” Brian said. “I just think [Regina Spektor’s] writing is phenomenal, and her lyrics are really powerful. She never writes from experience, so it’s amazing that she can write that kind of personal stuff without actually going through it.” Photo by Nicole Luby.

HAUBERK 2010

LOVE146 Back Cover: Senior Duncan McHenry holds up a sign for an informative slideshow that was used at the Love146 benefit concert. His band, Spacebear, performed five of their original songs at the concert. “I donated to the cause, and it was surprising to hear what’s going on,” McHenry said. “The organization helps stop sex trafficking and slavery. It’s sad to know what is happening in our own country.” Photo by Anna Petrow. SENIOR ENTRANCE Back Cover: After months of construction work, the new school building was finished just in time for the start of the ‘09-’10 school year. Among many features, the senior entrance were received well by students. “It definitely looks a lot nicer than it used to,” senior Maria Reyes said. “I use them a lot. Like if I’m going out to lunch with someone, that’s where we meet.” Photo by Anna Petrow. SWIM THAT SPRINT Left: During varsity swim practice, junior Nathan Simpson works on 25-yard sprints to prepare for upcoming meets. “After one lap, everyone will get out of the pool, and then we’ll do two 25yard sprints,” Simpson said. “And for that, we basically try to swim as fast as we can. We started doing this midseason, and it helps us prepare so we know what to do in an actual meet.” Photo by Anna Petrow. CUPCAKE BRULée Right: Junior Jonathan Dawson holds a cupcake to a candle flame as part of the French Honor Society initiation ceremony. “We wanted to make it more interesting than just holding a candle,” Dawson said. “So we chose cupcakes because we thought it would be more fun. I almost got burned by the hot wax dripping down.” Photo by Alissa Pollack.
