Office Hours The main office at SME is open until 4:00 p.m. each day. The counseling office is open until 3:30 p.m.. Due to changes in staff hours and rotating schedules, not all support staff are here until those times, however. Please call the office to verify if you have a question about hours and availability.

Message from the Principal Update and Progress: Development and Implementation of Professional Learning Communities We are entering our second year of implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) process at SME. For those of you who are new to SME, the PLC process focuses on student learning, collaboration, and a results-orientation. As we reported in the August and February newsletters, implementation has gone extremely well. In some teaching disciplines we have progressed further than the goals we had initially established for the year. One of the most important goals we faced last year was to develop a new mission statement for the school which reflected the language of PLCs. A special committee of staff members was assembled to complete this part of the process. After weeks of brainstorming, writing, and editing, the committee presented the new mission statement to the faculty in April for approval. The new mission statement was approved unanimously. The mission of SME is to guide student learning with high academic expectation. As you can see, the mission statement above is simple to remember and aligns with our purpose. Copies of the new mission statement can be found throughout the building and in each of our classrooms. In our second year of implementation we plan on working on common assessments. In addition, we want to assist staff members so they understand the value of analyzing data from the assessments to improve teaching in the classroom. Historically, educators have often had limited experience with analyzing data from student assessments. As such, changes in teaching rarely occurred. Our emphasis is to teach assessment analysis to our teachers so they can objectively review data for improving teaching. This past summer we sent eight teachers to a PLC conference (held locally) on assessments and assessment analysis. These teachers will serve as resource people as we begin this phase of implementation. In August, Dr. Dennis King from Solution Tree, Inc. provided additional assessment training to our entire faculty. It is going to be important for us to continue with our training as the year progresses in order to ensure that teachers understand and implement the process of assessment analysis. We are also looking into possibly purchasing an assessment statistical software program to help teachers with processing and analyzing data. Once this data has been analyzed, teachers can make the changes necessary in their teaching to promote student learning. On a side note, we would like to share with you that our school did exceptionally well on the Kansas Assessments back in April. Building wide, our scores across all the tested curricular areas were in the range of 94-97% proficiency. Maintaining these high performance scores will continue to be a challenge as we continue to change demographically in our attendance area. Nevertheless, our goal is to be sure all sub-groups (socio-economics, ethnicity, and Special Education) meet the same levels of expectation. Karl R. Krawitz Ed.D, Principal
School News Illness at School If a student becomes ill while at school, he/she must come to the nurse’s office and a parent must be contacted before he/she can leave the building. If a student leaves without checking out through the nurse’s office, the absence will be considered unexcused. Please be sure to keep the nurse's office notified of any changes in your phone numbers at home or work and for your emergency contacts in case your child becomes ill while at school. No students are allowed to leave unless the nurse's office contacts a parent, so it is imperative that we have current working phone numbers.
Screenings We will soon start vision screenings for 9th and 11th grade students and hearing screenings for 10th grade students. If you do not want your student to have the screenings, please notify us. Susan Varner, School Nurse 913-993-6616
Library News This fall eighteen freshmen English classes came to the media center for orientation. Through a PowerPoint called Survivor, they learned all about online and print resources as well as upcoming special events such as the Used Book Sale, Dia de los Muertos, and the Poetry SLAM. Following the presentation, the students used laptops to create passwords to logon and are now ―good to go‖ on the school computers! Recently, Kate Pickett, young adult librarian from Johnson County Library, presented book talks for incoming ninth graders. She shared the newest titles so students could make a selection for outside reading. Kate will return later in the year to talk to other classes about the classics and biographies. The library welcomes the following wonderful students as lab aides this fall: Beth Capps, Melissa Gregg, Isabel Huyett, Chris Pointer, Alex Rory, Rachel Thomas, and Shannon Tuttle. We greatly appreciate these students who are willing to give back to their school and help in every way possible! Thanks a million to the following nineteen volunteers who give so generously of their time and talents to assist our library program! ACT/SAT There are two remaining ACT test dates in 2010: October 23 and December 11. Students may register online at www.act.org. Counseling Office News - http://www4.smsd.org/SMECounselors/ Private School Shadow Days We will once again, host Private School Shadow Days. The following dates have been selected: October 18, October 25, November 8, November 15, and December 6th. We have scheduled the Private School Shadow days on Mondays. As you may know, SME is on a modified block schedule and Mondays are the days where all class periods meet. If you have a student who attends a private school and is thinking of coming to Shawnee Mission East as a freshman next year and would like to visit, go to the SME Counselor Web Backpack at: http://www4.smsd.org/SMECounselors/html31128.htm for more information and the registration form. The registration form should be turned into the Counseling Center two (2) weeks prior to the date of your request. College Applications Students must check with individual college websites and/or application materials to determine what is required to complete an application folder. All colleges require an official student transcript, which must be submitted by the high school. Although the school submits the transcript, a student must request this service in person 4 weeks prior to the application deadline and have a signed Transcript Release Form on file. The Counseling Office will provide envelopes and postage for transcripts that must be mailed. The first 5 mailed transcripts will be free but after 5 transcripts, the student will need to pay $2.00 for each transcript. Some colleges also require letters of recommendation from a counselor. If a letter of recommendation is required, the student must complete (1) a Personal Data Sheet, (2) a Parent Information Form, and (3) a typed resume. Copies of these forms may be found in the Counseling Office or on the counseling web backpack. These items should be completed and submitted to the student’s counselor 4 weeks prior to the earliest deadline. At that time, the student must also make an appointment with the counselor to discuss the letter of recommendation. Students are asked to mail a paper copy or submit an online student section of the college application themselves. The Counseling Office will mail a Shawnee Mission East Secondary School Report, transcript and letter of recommendation separate from the student’s application. If a teacher recommendation is required, the teacher will mail the Teacher Report separately as well. Students must provide envelopes and postage for teacher recommendations.

Applications due November 15, 2010: Requests must be made in the counseling office by October 15, 2010. PSAT/NASQT – The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test The PSAT/NMSQT measures the verbal, math, and writing skills that students have developed over the course of their education. Typically, students take the PSAT in their junior year of high school. It is also beneficial for motivated college bound sophomores. The PSAT serves as a valuable too to assist students, parents, and schools with early college preparation and planning. The 2010 PSAT/NMQT is the qualifying test for entry to National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) competitions for the college scholarships that will be awarded in 2011. Students who meet published participation requirements, which include taking the PSAT in their junior year, will enter the NMSC competitions for recognition and awards. Information about NMSC programs, entry requirements, and scholarships to be offered in 2011 can now be found a www.nationalmerit.org and in the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin that will be given to all students at SME who register for the exam. TEST DATES: Wednesday October 13, and Saturday October 16 REGISTRATION: Students may register in the SME Counseling Office through Friday October 8. Cost for registration is $16.00. Counseling Office News - http://www4.smsd.org/SMECounselors/ PLAN testing for Sophomores All sophomores are encouraged to take the PLAN test on Wednesday morning, October 13 . There will be no classes on October 13, so the students will not miss class. The PLAN is the preliminary ACT test that gives students feedback on academic achievement as well as a predicted ACT score. There is also a career component which yields information for educational and career planning. Students may register in the Counseling Office until October 8. The cost is $15.00 and checks should be made payable to SME. Sophomores taking the PLAN should bring their own calculator and two #2 pencils and report to school at the regular time on October 13.
SHARE News SHARE's Green Bean Dodgeball Tournament is coming up November 8 and 11. Each team brings Green Beans for Wilhelmena's Kitchen in KCK. One of SHARE's friends is a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa. She tells us that most of the villagers have vision difficulties. We're collecting old glasses and "cheaters" to send. If you have a pair you can spare, please drop them off at the front office. One of our many mottos at SHARE is that "It's Never Too Late to Volunteer". If your student didn't have a chance to sign up after the SHARE Fair, please have them e-mail PatKaufman@smsd.org or stop by the SHARE office. We can always find a volunteer opportunity for any student. Also, SHARE students are continually developing new projects. Fall Sports Senior Nights It is an important tradition to recognize our seniors and their parents. The following are dates for senior nights for fall sports: Football

Fall Sports Banquets To honor our athletes and coaches, all fall sports have a team banquet. Please check with the individual coaches for date, time, and location for a sports particular banquet. An entire listing of the banquets will be included in the November newsletter.
Physical Exam Required for Participation in Winter Sports Winter sports begin on Monday, November 15, 2010. Be sure to keep the following in mind as you prepare for girls and boys basketball, wrestling, bowling, and boys swimming: We must have a physical exam on file before an athlete can try out or practice. If you have already turned in a physical form for fall sports, you have already met this requirement. If you are not sure you have turned it I, please check with the AD Secretary in the office. The exam must have taken place after May 1, 2010. The specific KSHSAA physical form must be used. These forms are available in the SME main office or on the athletic web site at www.smesports.org. If you download the physical from the website, please make sure that you have 4 pages. Please turn in your physicals to the AD Secretary prior to November 15th. If you are turning in your physical on November 15, please take it directly to the coach.
Winter Sports Meet the Coach Night Winter Sports Meet the Coach Night will take place on Monday, November 22 at 6:00PM. There will be a general meeting in the auditorium at 6:00, followed by individual coaches meetings at 6:30. The individual sports meetings will be in various locations around the school. All athletes in a winter sport and at least one of their parents are required to attend.
Fall and Holiday Break Moratoriums The ―no practice‖ dates for the fall and over the holidays have been set by the KSHSAA. These dates are November 8-14 and December 23-27, 2010. This means that there shall be no athletic practice, off-season conditioning, informal basketball shooting, working out on wrestling mats, etc., in school-owned facilities during the fall athletic buffer week (November 814) and holiday break moratorium (December 23-27).

Booster Clubs and Organizations Theatre News for September, 2010 Don’t miss the SME fall production of Machinal, a drama, on November 11, 12, and 13 at 7 pm in the Dan Zollars Auditorium. The cast is directed by Brian Cappello, with technical direction by Tom DeFeo. Admission for the play is $7; $5 for students with ID; and free for students in SME theatre classes (with SME ID). The next Theatre Boosters meeting will be October 12 at 7:00 pm in the Little Theatre. All families of students interested in theatre are encouraged to attend. At the meeting you will hear from teachers about class activities and Machinal – the Theatre department’s fall production scheduled for November 11, 12, and 13; get your questions answered; and have the opportunity to volunteer. Information will also be presented about auditions for Beauty and the Beast, the department’s upcoming musical production. An informational meeting about the New York Trip for juniors and seniors will follow the general meeting. The Fall Book has already gone to press, but ads may still be placed for the Winter and Springs editions. About the SM East All-Sports Booster Club Founded in 1968, the All-Sports Booster Club has a rich tradition of supporting all Lancer sports teams and cheerleading on an equal basis. The Shawnee Mission School District provides approximately $50,000 in funds to support all of our sports programs. Funds raised by the Club provide significant additional support to student athletes and their coaches, helping pay for new equipment, travel, banners, uniforms, special training events, and more.
