SMFA IMPACT REPORT
We’re so grateful for all you have done and continue to do to support the SMFA community.
As the new dean of SMFA at Tufts, I feel immensely privileged to come into a school with nearly 150 years of history of encouraging new ideas and creativity in the visual arts.
Your impact—as a supporter, an SMFA parent, alumni art sale donor, art sale buyer, or friend of SMFA—propels this school forward and honors the history of creativity that continues to influence contemporary art here in Boston and beyond.
Thank you for being a part of this community, and I hope that you see the difference you are making at SMFA!

TRANSFORMING LIVES AND COMMUNITIES
Prior to our merger with Tufts University in 2016, SMFA offered merit-based scholarships—but today, through a combination of scholarships, programs, and other funding opportunities, we’re able to provide all students who have need with the financial aid necessary to succeed at SMFA at Tufts.
56% of our nearly 700 undergraduate students receive financial aid of some sort.
Critical financial aid funds can come from current-use scholarships, which help SMFA students studying this year, or through endowed scholarships that grow over time to help students for years to come.
SUPPORTING FACULTY RESEARCH AND TRAVEL
For our professors to stay relevant, it is imperative that they have funding to travel for research, to participate in conferences, and to attend important exhibitions related to their art practice.
Research and travel grants—supported by Carol and Richard Daynard and Lilly and Ted Yun—give our professors these valuable opportunities.
Thank you for your support of these important funds.
GENEROUS FRIENDS LIKE YOU HELP MAKE THESE IMPORTANT FUNDS POSSIBLE:
• Hapgood Term Scholarship
• Callaghan Family Scholarship
• Anderson Scholarship
• Ritchie SMFA Endowed Scholarship
• Burkley Family Endowed Scholarship
• Horowitz Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship
Financial aid benefits our students and all of us because it provides opportunities for more voices to be heard.
Thank you for your investment in our community.
FUNDING
KEY
OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH
The Dean’s Discretionary Fund provides the flexibility to respond to immediate opportunities and needs from the entire SMFA community. With the arrival of Dean Fultineer, the support we’ve received this year is especially meaningful as she embarks on imagining a more vibrant future for SMFA.
To all who contributed to this fund—including Roger and Diana Grenier, Steve and Amy Horowitz, and our generous Giving Tuesday donors—we say thank you.
SMFA ART SALE
For 44 years, the SMFA Art Sale has been integral to our school. It highlights the immense creativity of our artists and the continued impact that graduates have on the contemporary art scene.
We’re grateful for our large community of artists who donate art and to art sale buyers for the resulting support that impacts students at SMFA. Making a purchase not only contributes to financial aid, but also helps participating alumni grow their careers.
Thank you for helping keep this important SMFA tradition alive.
WELCOMING ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
The Visiting Artist Lecture Series provides students with the opportunity to connect with practicing alumni artists, as well as prominent artists, whose perspectives bring value to the SMFA program and assists students in cultivating a network in Boston and beyond.
This year, we welcomed 10 artists to this lecture series. We’d like to thank Robert Nagle for helping to bring this program to life and for helping to make Boston a place where contemporary art can truly thrive.
