What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to function. Different from the “normal” ups and downs many people experience everyday, bipolar disorder is characterized by unusually intense emotional states that occur in distinct periods called “mood episodes.” An overly joyful or overexcited state is referred to as a manic episode, while an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode. Although bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide, treatment is available and can help people lead remarkably full and productive lives.
Did you know?
Bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million American adults or 2.6 percent of the U.S. adult population. It often develops in a person’s late teens or early adult years, as at least half of all cases start before age 25. Bipolar disorder occurs equally in men and women. While the cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, research indicates a genetic component may exist, as chances of developing bipolar disorder is increased ten-fold if parents or siblings have been diagnosed with it.
