PREPARING FOR A SEASON OF GIVING Bike-A-Thon Shopping - Providence Montessori raised over fourteen thousand dollars from the annual Bike-A-Thon this year. On December 17, the school went shopping for KVC and the Arbor Youth Services. The goal was to buy gift for 75 youths. We were able to accommodate 58. Overall, we were extremely grateful to provide the help we could. - Theo Cozzi

Scholars love all the buzz around microeconomy. This most recent bee cohort recently put the touches on this season’s hives.

Good Giving Challenge - Providence Middle School raised over seventeen hundred dollars from donations for the Good Giving Challenge. With that money, we will buy equipment for a black box theatre. That includes: lights, background, microphones, and speakers. We are so excited to use all of these new utilities for the drama curriculum. On behalf of us all here at Providence Middle School, we would like to thank all of the parents who donated to the Good Giving Challenge. It is greatly appreciated. - Theo Cozzi (article continues on page 2)

God's Pantry Food Bank has food banks and food pantries. A food bank is a nonprofit organization that acts as food storage and they collect and distribute food to hunger relief organizations and those in need. A food pantry is a “shop” for people who need food and/or are experiencing hunger. They currently are serving fifty counties in central Kentucky and partner with more than 450 meal programs and pantries. Their goal is to help hunger in Kentucky and help everyone be properly fed. God’s Pantry Food Bank accepts money, food, and is always looking for volunteers. The requirements of volunteering are: must be able to lift 40lbs, have a valid driver’s license and insurance on their vehicle, and be willing to undergo a background check. THE BASEMENT By Alice Lugauer Entertainment

I am the prey. I am being hunted, in my dreams and when I’m awake, Tarsa wrote, her pen scratching against the paper. Since she’d moved to the small city of Tiderun, strange things had happened. Her neighbor, Mr. Hank had attacked her, scratching her arm, when they first met. He appeared to Tarsa in a dream, and seemed to recognize her as a different person, someone who he’d been waiting for. Weeks later, she learned that a very old woman named Tarsa was supposed to live with her adopted family. Tarsa, the thirteen-year-old girl, thought about this as she stood up and walked out of her bedroom, closing the door softly behind her. Through the wide, high window, the sun was rising. Her phone rang, the sound muffled by her pocket. “Rosemary?” Her friend was calling. Tarsa and Rosemary had known each other for seven years, but they hadn’t spoken since Tarsa moved to Tiderun. Rosemary’s tone was unexpectedly serious and frightened. “What did you do?” Before Tarsa could respond, she exclaimed, “Why are there government people in my house?!” “Why does this have anything to do with-” “Listen! If I don’t tell them everything . . .” Silence. “Rosemary?” “Tarsa . . . that’s you.” Rosemary hung up.

Make your predictions. Why is the government breaking into Rosemary’s house? What does Tarsa have to do with it? FIVE extra points to your overall CRL grade IF you write a paragraph answering this two part question.

The electives taught by Mr. Harr are technology and filmmaking. Electives taught by Mr. Meadors are journalism and screenwriting. Electives taught by Gar are handcrafts and astronomy.

Rock painting is taught by Ms. Martin. Ukulele is taught by Mr. Jeffries. Mr Beiting is teaching band and guitar. Mrs. Sither is teaching a math lab and Senora Fernandez teaches a spanish lab. - Katie Lanigan Much Ado About Nothing - Kentucky Shakespeare’s Educational and Outreach Programs will be on campus January 24th to perform an abridged version of of Much Ado About Nothing for the students. More excitingly, this production will be performed as a two-hander (a play with only two actors). Hannah-Blair Bennett

Experiments - In science the school is learning about human anatomy and different systems. We have been in the anatomy unit for 6 weeks. The systems are the nervous system, respiratory system, digestive system, muscular system and skeletal system. Each student chose one system to research and do an experiment on. The anatomy unit will end on December seventeenth. - Katie Lanigan

CURLING UP WITH A GOOD BOOK Recommendations to keep entertained this Holiday Season Marielena dePedro Entertainment

Masterpiece is a book about a beetle named Marvin who lives with his family under the sink of an apartment in New York. The family that Marvin’s family lives with, the Pompadays, have an eleven-year old son named James. When James gets a pen-and-ink drawing kit for his birthday, Marvin decides to draw him a picture, and James’ parents think that James drew it. Marvin and James soon become friends, and they get caught up in a staged art heist. Masterpiece is a good book because the author, New York Times Bestselling author Elise Broach, puts a lot of tension and attention-grabbers in the book. It is an interesting mystery that will keep your curiosity flowing. A Series of Unfortunate Events is a thirteen-book series about three children named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire who are suddenly orphaned when their parents are killed in a fire. They are then taken in by a man named Count Olaf, who is after the enormous fortune that the Baudelaire parents have left behind for their children. Throughout the series, Count Olaf carries out villainous schemes that will change the Baudelaire’s lives forever. I like the series because there is a lot of tension that keeps your curiosity flowing throughout the books. Although sad and miserable for the characters at times, A Series of Unfortunate Events will keep you hooked till the end. A Long Walk To Water begins as two stories, that are about a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985. The girl, named Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home. Nya makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, named Salva, becomes one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, which are refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship, from sheer loneliness to attacks by the rebels to encounters with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing way. In my opinion, you should read this book because it shows how people can survive in the harshest of conditions if they stay together and work hard. In Nya’s story, it shows how the will to do something will intervene in all the bad. Keeper of the Lost Cities is a very intriguing book that has many scene twists that will keep you wondering. This 9.5 book series is about a girl, Sophie Foster, who is an elf in a human world, but she doesn’t know it yet.

She is taken to the Lost Cities, she is adopted by Grady and Edaline Ruewen, she attends their prestigious school, Foxfire, and she makes many friends that will stay with her throughout the novels. This novel is very interesting, with Sophie’s hundreds of near-death experiences and just the overall theme of these novels. The author, Shannon Messenger wrote book 8.5 in the beginning of 2020, that book has all of the registry files of all the characters and even some delicious looking recipes for the food the ‘elves’ eat. I highly recommend this book series for anyone who doesn’t mind a little scariness. I Am Malala is a book about a girl named Malala Yousafzai, who was a Pakistani schoolgirl, and advocated for women's education, but paid the price. Malala Yousafzai’s story begins with her parents being consoled after producing a baby girl. In their part of northern Pakistan, she says, there is always celebration after a baby boy’s arrival. But there is no such fanfare for females, as their destiny is to cook and clean, to be neither seen nor heard. The question is: so how did Malala, who barely was given a mention in her family’s ancestry, become destined to go down in history as a symbol for girls’ universal right to an education? In my opinion, you should read I Am Malala because it shows the fact that if you advocate peacefully for what you think is right, soon change will come. I enjoyed the book because of the fact that this has gained so much attention and caused so much change in the world, that one person could change the lives of so many women. It truly kept me at the edge of my seat and warmed my heart.
