HUMA 137: Art Matters Midterm Assignment D U E : July 4, 2017 Worth 20% of the Final Grade For this assignment you must select one of the two paintings provided to you below and answer the following questions in relation to it. Does this artwork support (exemplify) or undermine (refute) the idea of any two (but not more than two) of the following: Universal human aesthetic experience (Issues of Beauty, taste, intersubjectivity) Disinterestedness The Sublime Formalism Avant-Garde Art Kitsch Your answer should be between three and four typed, double-spaced pages, using a standard 12-point font. You must discuss the concepts and how they are/are not supported by your chosen painting. You MUST defend your answer by discussing specific features of the artwork in relation to the concepts you have chosen to write about. Please use ARTstor for images (if you are including images), and you must include references. You should use the course Learning Materials and/or the course textbook to complete this assignment. While you are welcome to use other resources as well, any research should be from academic (reliable) resources. (Encyclopedias are fine, but Wikipedia is not.) MLA is the preferred style for the Humanities, but if you choose to use a different style, it's fine, but please be consistent and use in-text citations. Once completed, your assignment should be emailed to me using the course mail tool. Your attachment should be titled with your name and 'midterm assignment' and the course code.
