Superstar Sam backs great opportunities arriors and England superstar Sam Tomkins might have the world of rugby league at his feet but he still understands the value of a good education so he is already a big fan of Central Park. The 23-year-old left school at 16 with ten GCSEs – one an A* at PE – and was offered a pay as you play deal by Wigan. Unsure he would make it and with his eye on the future, Sam also became an apprentice green keeper. The full back said: “I did that for about 12 to 18 months alongside playing. When the club gave me another contract they also gave me a job coaching primary school children. I really enjoyed

working with the kids.” That lasted until his first team breakthrough and the rest is history. But he still counts himself lucky and knows his career could end anytime. “A player has a 10 to 15 year career but a 40 year working life. Hopefully I’m set up but anything could happen. That’s why getting training is important,“ said Sam. “Central Park’s a great initiative. The area’s been crying out for something like this so it’ll give people real opportunities. “You get out of life what you put in and Central Park really can help people reap the rewards. It’s rare to get a facility like this so I’d encourage everyone to take advantage of it.”

ROM troubled teenager to model apprentice at Central Park – Ryan Seddon has worked hard to put the dark days of school exclusions behind him. He had a brief stint as a gardener after leaving Pembec High with a few qualifications and then completed basic brick-laying and joinery courses before landing his current role as a cleaning and support services apprentice. His NVQ Level 2 course includes classroom learning and caretaking jobs ranging from cleaning and basic maintenance to site preparation. It brings him into contact with students, staff, visitors and even Wigan Warriors owner Ian Lenagan. Now 17, he said: “It’s fantastic, really enjoyable. I’m meeting new people all the time and get to use my practical skills and my own initiative. If I spot something that needs sorting I just get on with it. “I was gobby at school and always getting into trouble. I do regret that. Now I’ve completely changed my attitude and I’m a nice polite lad who’ll do anything for anyone. “Central Park’s impressive, a good place and I’d say it really can make a difference. I’m lucky to be here so I’m hoping I can get a full-time job when I’ve finished my course.” His line manager Site Manager John Collins said: “As a trainee and considering his age, he’s impressed me 110 per cent. He’s one of the most mature learners we’ve had on the site and he’ll go a long way. I’m glad he’s had the chance to shine and flourish. I can’t fault him.”

Experience gives Ryan a life-changing boost Training sessions build new skills for learners Pupils have been gaining practical experience in construction as part of the site’s ongoing commitment to provide learning opportunities to schools in the borough. Students from schools such as The Hope School and St Peter’s High, Orrell, have worked in subject areas such as painting and decorating and brickwork. They have gained experience preparing surfaces for decorating, applying emulsion, undercoat, gloss and finishing with wallpaper. And in construction classes, the learners were able to mix, set out and level small brickwork tasks. As well as teaching individual skills,
the tasks also provided excellent team building opportunities. Rob Haliwell, Construction Tutor said: “Central Park is providing opportunities for these learners to experience practical construction skills while working in a controlled and supervised area. All the learners have enjoyed the experience – including me.” There are plans to continue to provide these opportunities as well as expand into other vocational areas for young learners.

Pupils enjoy sessions SPORTS tutors and apprentices have been delivering fun, educational and engaging gym and physical activity sessions to pupils with learning disabilities. Students aged up to 19 – who attend nearby Hope School in Wigan – visited the facilities at Central Park for weekly sessions between January and April. They took part in activities, which focussed on the safe use of gym equipment, improving muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance, participating in team sports and working as part of a team. At the end of the programme, a presentation was held for pupils who were awarded certificates and medals for their participation. The work experience was also invaluable for the Sports Apprentices at Central Training, who were able to develop their skills and abilities in sports, fitness and liaising with the public. Feedback from the pupils was extremely positive and plans are already in place for future sessions.
In partnership with Wigan Council and training provider Central Training, facilities on site are being upgraded at a cost of £2.5 million to provide vocational courses for 500 students and to support between 80 and 100 apprentices who get real-life work experience. Warriors and Central Training teaching and support staff offer courses for 14 to 19-year-olds. They include a full-range of sport-based studies as well as construction and allied trades, hair and beauty, business courses and catering and hospitality. Facilities for community use include a

Central Hair and Beauty will offer a wide range of courses that will enable learners to fulfil employment requirements or establish them in a new career in the fast moving and exciting industry. The vision of the academy is ambitious – to provide outstanding education and skills training, welcoming students of all ages and backgrounds in a supportive learning environment. Learners will be able to choose from a wide range of programmes within the Hair and Beauty Sector, including: ■ Introduction to Hair and Beauty Sector ■ Hairdressing ■ Beauty therapy Furthermore, The Academy will be open for community use at certain periods throughout the week, building on the principles of providing an outstanding service for the local community at affordable prices. The real life working environment enables learners to gain valuable work and people skills as part of their programme. One student who is already benefiting and looking forward to using the new facilities is Katrina Spencer. She started on the Hair and Beauty Foundation Level Learner course in September 2011 and is now progressing onto the Level 2 programme. She said: “The best thing about coming to Central Park is the relationship with the tutors and the level of learning they teach at and practical expertise they offer. “Central Park also provides all the learners with equipment, bus fares and lunches which really helps to remove any barriers to accessing courses provided on the site.” She added: “I’m really looking forward to the new salon being finished and getting the chance to work my skills on real customers. ■ For more details about Central Hair and Beauty call Terri Connor on 01942 776470 or email terri.connor@ centraltraininggroup.org

We are delighted to be working with our partners to try and bring hope.“

Josh lays out his
ELITE FUTURE JOSH Charnley is taking the Super League by storm and it’s hard to believe that the Chorley born 21-year-old only made his Warriors debut in 2010... last year he grabbed 27 tries in 32 appearances. His form was been recognised with a call up to the England Elite squad and he is all set to be a front runner for his country on the wing with the 2013 World Cup on the horizon. While Josh is enjoying the spotlight now, it has been far from plain sailing and he is grateful to his Dad who stuck by him playing the game he loves. He said: “It was quite late on when I realised I might be able to make a career out of Rugby League. “I played locally for St Pats and living in Chorley my Dad used to take me to training every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I was then picked up by Wigan on a pay as you play.” Meanwhile to earn money Josh learned a trade as a bricklayer
and admitted if his rugby career hadn’t taken off he may well have still been seen carrying bricks and mortar. “My granddad used to be a bricklayer, and my dad's got a hand in bricklaying, so I thought I’d do it, then I had something to fall back on in case the rugby didn’t happen for me. It was a big decision giving up a job, money in your pocket, when there are no guarantees you’ll make it in rugby.” Despite his rise to fame in the famous cherry and white, Josh admits he has kept up the trade he learned as a youngster. He laughed: “My mate’s building a house, so I dropped in with him and helped him out, just to keep my hand in it. I was pretty slow at first, but I went alright. Did he pay me? Yeah, I made sure he did!”
