EWCASTLE-under-Lyme College (NULC) has launched a new initiative to help people across Staffordshire who are unemployed or face redundancy get back into work. The new Employment and Training Centre has opened its doors opposite the College’s main entrance on Knutton Lane. The Centre is aimed at adults who are currently unemployed or facing redundancy. In many cases they do not have to be receiving Jobseekers’ Allowance in order to qualify for help. Advisers based at the new Centre support both employers and individuals. The team will work with individuals who are unemployed to: ● Create a career action plan; ● Ensure people have the up-to-date skills required by local employers; ● Arrange work trials and placements; ● Match individuals with prospective employers; ● Arrange for people to gain specific skills or qualifications before they start work, perhaps followed up later with more training through an apprenticeship, taught programme or work-based NVQs.

More employers needed to join record-breaking programme NULC has reported a record increase in the number of people taking up an Apprenticeship. A total of 462 people started an Apprenticeship in 2010/11, up 82 per cent on the previous year. The College’s figures are higher than the 62 per cent increase in Apprenticeship starts across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, according to figures released in October 2011 by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Vicky Boulton-Clarke, Head of Employer Training at NULC said:“These figures demonstrate that Newcastle-under-Lyme College and the businesses we work with are committed to providing training opportunities to contribute to the economic regeneration of North Staffordshire. “This year we have also seen a big increase in

the number of 16 to 18 year olds taking up an apprenticeship, which goes to show that Apprenticeships are becoming a more popular choice for youngsters who want a route into highly skilled jobs without the expense of university.” NULC works closely with more than 400 local employers to provide Apprenticeships in areas including Accounting, Construction, Childcare, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care, Retail and IT.

Vicky added:“I’d urge any businesses who are interested in recruiting an apprentice or who want to train an existing employee through the Apprenticeship scheme to get in touch with the College’s Apprenticeships team.” Anyone interested in starting an Apprenticeship is being urged to visit the College’s Open Event on Saturday 28 January, 10am-noon. Operating from their purpose-built centre in Newcastle’s Lyme Valley, Martec offer motor vehicle Apprenticeships and advanced Apprenticeships in seven separate disciplines, from motorcycles to heavy goods vehicles. The partnership will create new opportunities for both organisations while allowing each to retain their own distinct identities. Former student scoops an Oscar FORMER Newcastle-under-Lyme College student, Pete Bebb, has received one of the most prestigious awards in the movie industry. Following on the heels of a Bafta success earlier in 2011, Pete won an Academy Award, or Oscar, in the Visual Effects category for his work on the Leonardo DiCaprio film Inception. After leaving school, Pete completed a vocational Art and Design course at Newcastle College in the mid 90’s before going on to study computer design at Wolverhampton University. He has worked on a long list of visually impressive films including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Bourne Ultimatum. Pete joined NULC students and local high school pupils for College’s first ever Heat Wave Film Festival in July, handing out awards to the winners. MP joins public speaking project STUDENTS from NULC are among those from only eight Colleges nationally to be taking part in a project designed to boost their skills in public speaking. It is part of the Speak out for Change – public speaking for active citizenship. project. Nine students from the College’s Foundation Studies department are taking part in the project, which will see them get the opportunity to speak publicly at a range of events organised by the College. Students recently took part in a workshop with Jennifer Mackay from the Speakers Trust and put their questions to the MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, Paul Farrelly. The College invited Paul along to meet the students and offer guidance and advice in public speaking. The students were then offered the opportunity to question the College’s constituency MP. Paul said:“This is a really good project; it’s fabulous to meet such enthusiastic students. “In life confidence is half the battle and this is exactly the sort of work we should be doing with young people to prepare them for life.” The ultimate goal for the students is to speak publically at a presentation evening to be held in the New Year. WORLD OF WORK A week of special events was staged by the College to help students to boost their employability skills. Students studying the Network to Work course took part in various activities as part of the College’s Employers’ Week. A range of local business experts were on hand to offer advice, including Tony Altham (local businessman and networking expert), Louise Griffin of Achieve Your Potential, Kerry Bonfiglio of Appointments Personnel and Steve Cunningham of Blind Vision. Students also took part in an ‘Employer Carousel’, where they got the opportunity to speed network with local employers including representatives from Newcastle Borough Council, Bibby Consulting

and Support, Staffordshire Police and Intercog. Simone Taylor from Bibby Consulting and Support said:“As a former NULC student it was a pleasure to come back and pass on my experiences to the students. “There’s an immense amount of knowledge to be learnt on the job and I am looking forward to passing this knowledge on.” Carl Kelsall, Neighbourhood Policing Officer for Staffordshire Police said:“It’s important for young people to know there are various skills they need in the workplace. “Confidence and communication skills are vital employability skills, which I can see these students have developed during the session.” The Network to Work course was set up by Computing, Accounting

and Business staff at NULC to prepare its students for life in the workplace. The course is six weeks in duration and at the end students have the opportunity to progress on to a full-time course at the college, start an apprenticeship or enter employment. Deb Harrison, Curriculum Leader for Computing, Accounting and Business said:“The Network to Work course has enabled our students to work closely with local employers to gain a wealth of knowledge including how to conduct themselves in a job interview, how to write CVs, how to network and more.” Ben Adams, aged 18 from Werrington, successfully completed the course and managed to arrange

two interviews. Smartphone app a hi-tech route to the latest news NULC has become one of the first colleges in the area to launch its own Smartphone app. The NULC app has been developed to help the College improve communication with current and prospective students and enhance the student experience. It can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store and Android Market by searching ‘NULC’. The app allows users to enquire about courses, get updates on news and events and view maps of the College’s multi-million pound campus, all while on the move using their Smartphone.

wins design award THE multi-million pound NULC campus has been recognised for its outstanding design in the 2011 Civic Awards. It was awarded joint winner in the category of Best New Commercial Building. A special ceremony was held at Newcastle Borough Council’s Civic Offices, where the College was presented with a celebratory plaque and certificate by the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Trevor Hambleton. Martin Bostock, Head of Estates and Facilities at NULC, said:“We’re immensely proud that the judges have chosen the College for this award. Our new campus was designed to offer students the highest quality learning experience within an inspirational setting. “At the same time we incorporated the latest energy efficient technologies to reduce our environmental impact. “The end result is a college of which we’re all justifiably proud and which

continues to delight those who study and work within it.” Newcastle-under-Lyme Civic Society and Newcastle Borough Council set up the Civic Awards scheme two years ago

NULC is currently home to more than 3,500 full-time students and around 8,000 part-time students. The building features state-of-the-art technology including eco-friendly measures such as a fully integrated Building Management System for efficient control of heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation, sensors on taps to prevent excessive water use and a rainwater harvesting system. The landmark new campus was opened in January 2010. Since that time the College has developed and extended the range of training and education that it offers by widening its degree level courses and the work that it does with employers at all levels, from funded NVQs to leadership and management and other high level training. Students hitting THE RIGHT NOTE MUSIC technology students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) have launched their own music label. Students studying the BTEC Level 3 in Music Technology have named their enterprise ‘Amplitude’. It will provide a range of services to staff, students and the local community, including events management, a recording and mastering service, a DJ booking agency and live music entertainment. Amplitude launched with a series of music gigs, which take place each Monday in the College’s Food Hall. Students are able to showcase their talents using creative performance technology including laptops, controllers, synths,

drum machines, samplers and iPads, to fellow students and staff who may like to book the group for future events. Music Technology Curriculum Leader Simone Bratt said:“We’re all incredibly excited about Amplitude. It provides the students with vital real world experience, showcasing their creative talents and enabling them to connect with the local community.” She added:“This should all help them to gain an advantage in the competitive music industry when applying for jobs in the future.” Music Technology students are able to use a state-of-the-art Music Technology Suite, which

New foundation degree offers hi-tech route to career in music PEOPLE with an interest in music are being encouraged to apply for a new part-time Foundation degree (FdSc) in Music Technology at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC). The brand new degree-level course, which starts in January, has been developed in partnership with Staffordshire University. The Foundation degree will be taught at the College’s state-of-the-art, industry-leading music technology facilities, including a professional recording studio, a dedicated suite of Apple Mac computers and the latest performance technology. Simone Bratt, Curriculum Leader for Music Technology at the College, said:“This is a fantastic opportunity for adults who have an interest in music to develop skills they need for a career in the music industry.”

The course will offer adults the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, from studio production to sound design for film and studio acoustics. The Foundation degree is aimed at adults aged 19 and over and is taught part-time over a three year period. At the end of the course, graduates will have an industry-recognised qualification in Music Technology. Record-breaking RESULTS RESULTS STUDENTS at NULC Sixth Form Centre achieved more A and A* grades than ever before in 2011. A total of 130 A* and A grades were awarded across a range of subjects, including Business Studies, Biology and Psychology. Three subjects in particular achieved exceptional success Maths/Further Maths, Law and Physics.

In Maths, just under 60 per cent of students achieved A*-B grades, in Law 56 per cent of students achieved A*-B grades and in Physics 58 per cent achieved A*-B grades. London visit gives a picture of life at leading employers A group of 15 students from Newcastleunder-Lyme College (NULC) headed to London on Tuesday 29 November to get a taste of working life at pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca. The trip was arranged through the College’s Health and Social Care and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Career Academy to help boost their networking and employability skills. The day involved around 1,300 students from across the UK, as well as over 100 leading London-based employers such as AstraZeneca, BT Wholesale, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, City of London Corporation, Marks and Spencer and Santander. In the morning, AstraZeneca provided NULC students with a behind the scenes look at how the organisation works, including a workplace tour. During the afternoon, students also received valuable advice from speakers including Channel 4’s Fairy Jobmother Hayley Taylor, Paul Wilson Senior Advisor at Bain and Company and speaker and author Lee Jackson. Sunder Sanghera, Career Academies Coordinator said:“Our students really looked forward to travelling to London to find out more about the inner-workings of a leading organisation. “The students enjoyed sharing their experiences with other Career Academy students from all over the country.”

4,000 flock to find out more A record number of future students and their parents flocked to the College’s three open events this autumn, to gain an insight into life at the Knutton Lane campus. Some 4,000 people flocked to see the College’s state-of-the-art facilities and talk to staff and students. The brand new 2012/13 prospectus was released and visitors were able to find out more about those courses before applying. Youngsters and their parents were also treated to a range of interactive demonstrations including graphics and animation, virtual gaming and live music. Principal Karen Dobson gave talks about the College’s recent successes and its plans for the future to packed audiences in the Auditorium. CELEBRITY hairdresser Lee Stafford took time out from his jet set lifestyle to inspire hairdressers of the future in the College’s Transform Salon and Spa. He staged a day of interactive hair demonstrations, helped by Level 3 Hairdressing students. Lee, pictured, who is known for his edgy style, also handpicked four student models to take part in the demonstrations. He hit the headlines last month when his partner, actress and model Jessica Jane Clement, was one of the favourites in ITV’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here series. His clients include actresses Billie Piper and Sophie Anderton, TV presenter Zoe Ball and pop star Rachel Stephens. Fancy dress fun day makes £700 for Children in Need

Fashion show raises £1,000 ART and Creative Studies students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) hosted a charity fashion show which raised more than £1,000. The fashion show was organised to raise vital funds for the Uganda Humanist Schools Trust and to raise awareness of Black History Month. The fashion show took place on Friday 7 October at the College’s Knutton Lane campus. An array of Level 3 student work was exhibited on the night including dance, fashion, graphics, photography and music. The event was organised by Alex Williams, BTEC Art and Design Level 2 and 3 Coordinator at NULC. He said:“The College’s nominated charity is the Uganda Humanist Schools Trust and with October being Black History Month we thought it was a great idea to raise awareness for two very worthy causes.” He continued:“The students worked very hard to make the evening such a success.” A raffle was held on the night with prizes including theatre tickets, driving lessons, spa treatments and £100 off wedding photography.

STAFF and students at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) dressed up in outrageous costumes and took part in a range of activities to raise more than £700 for Children in Need. On Friday 18 November, staff and students swapped their everyday college clothes and donned fancy dress outfits, in return for a donation. Jo Metcalf, Learner Participation Coordinator, said:“NULC is proud to be supporting Children in Need again this year. It’s a great way for our students to contribute to a very worthwhile cause while having lots of fun.” In addition to the fancy dress theme, staff members Jon Hyde (Functional Skills) and Dave Samuel (ICT) took part in a charity

badminton match dressed as Superman and Mr. Invincible, dubbed the ‘Clash of the Titans’. Students from NULC Sixth Form Centre held a table top sale, where items donated by staff and students were on sale. Official Children in Need merchandise, including Pudsey key rings and bracelets, was also on sale from the Students’ Union with all proceeds being donated to the cause. Other fundraising activities included a Cake Sale in the Food Hall, organised by students from Foundation Studies. The students also sold raffle tickets for a giant Pudsey teddy bear. Volunteers also be took buckets round the College throughout the day to collect donations from staff and students.

Supersonic speedster

MAKES PIT-STOP PUPILS from North Staffordshire were able to see the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic Car) at Newcastle-under-Lyme College. The Bloodhound SSC made a pit stop at the College on Wednesday 12 October, where more than 300 invited school children were able to meet those involved in building the car and view the full size 13.4 metre replica.

The young visitors were also treated to a presentation in the College’s state-of-the-art auditorium from members of the Bloodhound SSC team, who shared engineering secrets from the project, explaining the challenges that still need to be overcome and discussing the opportunities that exist for today’s students. The Bloodhound SSC Project is Britain’s latest attempt to break the World Land Speed Record, raising awareness and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in the process. NULC offers a range of STEM subjects, many being taught at its dedicated £6 million Skills and Technology Centre. Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at

NULC said:“The Bloodhound Project is a unique way to get more students interested in subjects like Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In this year’s Mathematics and Physics A Level results, 60% of NULC students achieved grades A*-B, which goes to prove that NULC is the ideal choice for people interested in a career in the Sciences and Engineering.” The Bloodhound SSC is set to tackle the World Land Speed Record in 2013 on the Hakskeen Pan, South Africa. The site offers a 12 mile track, across a dry lake bed – providing the space for the Bloodhound, which is designed to cover 16 km in 100 seconds, to travel at 1.4 times the speed of sound and faster than a bullet fired from a Magnum 357.

FEELING GREAT CLAIRE Hughes is a busy mum-of-two who works full-time as an Accounts Assistant at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.

In January 2011, having spent Christmas gorging on unhealthy treats, Claire returned to work feeling lethargic, lacking energy and feeling body conscious. So she took the brave move to change her eating habits and attitude to exercise. Claire said:“I was a size 14 and felt so body conscious. I was untoned and embarrassed how the weight had crept on.” Knowing she needed to make a change, Claire joined the gym at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre based at Newcastle-under-Lyme College in January. At first, Claire found the thought of exercise daunting.“I found it difficult trying to stay in the gym for an hour-long workout and was scared to use the various equipment.” “Staff at the centre are brilliant and very friendly. They’re always on hand to support you and offer help. They have lots of knowledge of different types of training so that I never get bored.” Claire has made an effort to schedule exercise into her daily life. “I go every day during my lunch break and try and do as many classes as I can fit into my very busy work and family life. There are lots of classes on offer, including Zumba, Aerumba and Circuits, and the opening times suit my busy schedule as the gym is open until 10pm on weekdays.”

She added:“I’ve even gone as far as to enrol myself on a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing, which is also taught at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre. In my spare time I have friends that like to come to my house for training sessions.” Having lost two stones and becoming incredibly toned, Claire has become an inspiration to friends and family.“I have so much more energy and generally feel healthy. “This is the fittest I have been in my life and I feel brilliant every day.” Leading a healthy lifestyle can be a struggle for anyone who leads a busy life. Claire’s secret to balancing a busy home life and healthy lifestyle? “I make a plan for the week ahead so that I can work out each day. It's okay to rest but the next time I’m training it’s harder, so I will increase my time, or weights, to push my body harder.” “My journey has not been just about weight loss. It’s about changing the way I think about exercise.

FIT FOR NEW JOB PEOPLE wanting to change careers or just expand their knowledge and experience in fitness instructing can now undertake fitness instructor courses with a brand new company, KR Fitness Education. Working in partnership with The Gordon Banks Sports Centre, KR Fitness Education will be running the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing in Gym-Based Exercise and Exercise to Music – your first step into working in the fitness industry. Courses are open to anyone aged 16 or over, who has a keen interest in instructing and wants to progress their skills and gain a qualification that will allow them to either run group fitness classes, or work as a gym instructor.

Company founder Karen Ramsay is delighted to be working with The Gordon Banks Sports Centre to offer the opportunity for people to qualify in fitness instructing. “I am very excited to be able to offer these courses, as there are few other local providers. Scrum half David selected to join England rugby squad A Newcastle-under-Lyme College student was selected for the England Rugby Squad after going through a series of trials. David Meakin, a scrum half or centre, attended the England training camp. David is an A Level student studying Maths, Chemistry, Physical Education, Physics and a member of the College’s Rugby Academy.

He said:“I was shocked to find out that I had been selected as the trials were really hard and the standard was very high.” Trevor Humphreys, the Academy of Sport Manager, said: “David is an extremely committed young individual who is realising his talent in rugby. Teams and individuals triumph at big regional championships COLLEGE sports teams, squads and individuals triumphed at the West Midlands Regional Championships at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Both the Men’s and Ladies’ Volleyball squads saw off competition from the rest of the West Midlands to be crowned West Midlands Champions. They were joined by Roxy Keshavarz in the ladies squash, Lucy Hayes in Ladies’ Cross Country and Sam Botham in Men’s Cross Country. These students join Natalie Slater who already qualified in Ladies’ Table Tennis, and 2 swimmers, Grant Hamnett and Jemma Caulsey who were selected within the swimming squad. All of these students will now go on to compete for the West Midlands at the British Colleges Sport National Championships which will take place at Bath University from 30 March to the 1st April 2012.

OLYMPICS

NULC has been officially welcomed in to London 2012’s Get Set network, in recognition of its commitment to Olympic and Paralympic Values.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has awarded the College with the status to acknowledge its involvement in the London 2012 education programme through the NULC Academy of Sport. The Academy gives students the chance to study and pursue their sporting interests at the same time. Opportunities for students include Football, Basketball and Netball Academies, an Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), a Sports Volunteering and Leadership Academy and a Coach Education Programme.

Lord Coe, Chairman of LOCOG, said: “When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people. “I’m proud to welcome Newcastleunder-Lyme College in to the Get Set network for their exciting work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality.” The College joins schools and colleges across the UK as members of the Get Set network and will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the coming years.
