news £4.75m plan unveiled for arts centre NULC will launch a new Performing Arts Centre in 2014. The College will redevelop the former Newcastle Fire Station on Knutton Lane to provide the £4.75 million facilities. Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at NULC said: “We’re very excited about the opportunities that the new Performing Arts Centre will bring both for young people across Staffordshire and the local community.’’ The new centre will address a skills shortage which was highlighted in a report by the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership. The Performing Arts Centre will offer courses in Performing Arts, Music Technology and Technical Theatre Production to complement existing provision and add a new Higher Education route – the Foundation degree (Fd) in Dance and Theatre Arts.
College buys youth hostel NEWCASTLE-under-Lyme College is buying Gradbach Mill Youth Hostel to use as an outdoor education centre. Gradbach, which is just outside Leek, was put on the market by the Youth Hostel Association to raise money to invest in other properties. Now NULC has stepped in to ensure the 18th century silk mill continues to be used for outdoor pursuits. NULC’s Vice Principal Craig Hodgson said:“Gradbach Mill will provide a beautiful setting for our students and youngsters from partner schools to enjoy experiential and outdoor learning. “We also believe Gradbach will be a great asset to the wider community who can benefit from using the mill as a residential training centre.” The College plans to renovate the mill in the first half of 2014.

EWCASTLE-under-Lyme College has a range of new and exciting courses starting in January. The College has launched a variety of new courses including Personal Money Management, Mothering Sunday Flower Arranging, Interior Design and Web Home Page Design. There will also be new qualifications in subjects such as Life Drawing, Sewing Machine Skills and Construction Skills covering painting, decorating, carpentry and joinery. The latest additions will be complemented by the return of regular favourites that help learners into Higher Education or improve their professional skills and qualifications, or their standard of maths, English or computing skills. Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at NULC, said:“Our range of courses on offer this year is fantastic. We’ve got community learning courses, Higher Education
courses, workplace training, there is something to appeal to everyone.” More than 70 per cent of adults taking college courses say their career prospects are improved, while 80 per cent say their self-confidence and self-esteem is improved. Around 75 per cent say it helps them keep active or make better use of their time and that their learning meant they could help their children with homework. NULC offers a range of part-time and work-based courses for adults in subjects including Access to Higher Education, Accounting, Art and Design, Childcare, Photography, Computing, Health and Social Care, Teaching, Construction, Electrical Installation, Management, Languages, Music and Maths and English. LSTOM Power is celebrating a hat trick of skills wins. The Stafford-based company has picked up the Engineering and Construction Employer of the Year from NULC and one of its apprentices has won a gold medal as one of the UK’s top young welders. The NULC award recognises Alstom Power’s contribution to apprentice training. The company currently has 11 apprentices who are working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship at NULC. And one of them, Kurt Rodgers, 19, took gold in the final of the national SkillWeld competition, which aims to find Britain’s most talented trainee welder. Kurt won the medal by taking part in a live competition at this year’s Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham. To recognise his outstanding achievement, NULC also chose Kurt as apprentice of the month, handing over both the company and apprentice awards in a ceremony at Alstom. NULC Principal Karen Dobson said:
What’s a Raspberry Pi? The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. Who can attend the NULC Raspberry Jam? We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and experience – mums and sons, dads and daughters, teachers, developers and enthusiasts. CELEBRATING A HAT TRICK: some of the Alstom apprentices who are studying at NULC. ”There is a severe shortage of skilled welders so our high quality training is very important to employers like Alstom. “We congratulate them not only on being our Engineering and Construction Employer of the Year but also on bringing forward talent like Kurt’s.” Barry Cramp, Alstom’s apprentice
Are you looking for an apprenticeship? We have apprenticeships available for all ages in the following subject areas:
• Business Administration
• Customer Service
• Painting and Decorating
• Brickwork
• Early Years
• Retail
• Beauty Therapy
• Hairdressing
• Sport

officer/assessor, added: ”We have enjoyed a long partnership with NULC, regularly putting our apprentices through qualifications there on day release. “We are delighted that our commitment to training has been recognised and are proud that our training has hit gold standard once again.”
Practical Adam chose to be an apprentice ADAM Smith joined NULC in 2008 aged 18 with 10 GCSE’s and three A-Levels. Here he explains why he chose an apprenticeship: “I was put off by the debts that come with attending university and I consider myself to be a practical person. “After being put through a NVQ Level 2 and a BTEC Level 3 by Alstom as part of my advanced apprenticeship, I decided to stay on at NULC and attempt the HNC. Once I had gained my HNC I carried on and completed the Foundation Degree.” Adam offers this advice to potential learners:“Gain as many qualifications as possible by continuing with your studies. In today’s industry there are many people with the relevant qualifications. Making sure that you have equal or higher qualifications for any position you are applying for will make sure that you have every chance of getting it.” Now aged 23 and with a list of qualifications under his belt including a Foundation degree, Adam is a Quality Inspector at Alstom Grid in Stafford. He said: “I would like to continue my career by progressing to a more senior position within Alstom and gaining the title of Engineer. My ultimate job role would be to become the MD of my own engineering company.” To find out more about studying an apprenticeship at NULC call 01782 254254 or email info@nulc.ac.uk

What is a Raspberry Jam? Raspberry Jams are set up to allow people of all ages and abilities to come together and share ideas related to the use of the new mini-computer, the Raspberry Pi.
STUDENT Jay Holland has been awarded one of 15 OCNWMR Access to Higher Education (HE) national awards. Jay, aged 26 and from Newcastle, enrolled on the Access to HE course to gain a place at university and achieve his ambition of becoming a Mental Health Nurse. Since starting the course he has encountered a series of personal problems, but in spite of that he remained committed. Maz Gardner, Curriculum Leader for Access to HE, said: “Despite everything being against him Jay continued to attend classes and complete assignments to deadline. He is a conscientious, reliable and hardworking individual and really deserves to win this award.” Jay said:“The course provided me with stability when other areas of my life were falling apart.” NULC runs six-week Pre Access to Higher Education courses throughout the year. The courses help students understand the long-term implications of studying at Level 3 and then degree level. Anyone interested in studying the Access to HE course will need to complete the Pre Access course first.
Why should I attend? The knowledge gained through coming together to discuss Raspberry Pi can give you a better understanding of programming or help your family or friends to learn new computing skills. The NULC Raspberry Jam will take place on Thursday 30 January 2014, from 6pm-9pm. For more information or to book your place contact Paul Simmons on paul.simmons@nulc.ac.uk.
Falklands vet at matching event FALKLANDS veteran Simon Weston was the star guest at an event to match employers with potential employees who have learning disabilities. The one day seminar on 12 December aimed to engage people with a learning disability in the world of work because it can prove very difficult for them to gain meaningful employment or work experience. It also gave potential employees the chance of short-term placements through to full employment. In 1982 Simon Weston was on board the RFA Sir Galahad support ship when it was destroyed in the Falkland Islands. The Welsh Guardsman became famous for his charity work after suffering severe burn injuries.
Town’s alive to sound of music STUDENTS studying Music Technology and Music at NULC will be showcasing their skills in Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre every Wednesday from noon to 2pm. The students have launched the Busk Stop outside the College’s M.A.D.E Here shop in Lancaster Buildings. The weekly sessions allow the students to fine-tune their performance skills and help to build their confidence. For more about the range of part-time music courses starting in January see page 5.

Lifelong Learning
Recruitment drive showed great style Ringing the changes with junk jewellery ALEXANDRA Wise, aged 20, completed the Foundation degree (Fd) in Contemporary Art Practice at NULC in the summer. Since then she has gone on to launch her own business as a jewellery designer. Alexandra, from Sandford Hill, creates necklaces, rings and bracelets from items other people would consider junk. “I do like to think I am turning trash into treasures,” she said.“People don’t always immediately realise what my jewellery is made from and once they find out they say what a brilliant idea it is.” “I’ve always had an interest in transforming the old into the new and started making these pieces as part of a project at college.” To create her jewellery Alexandra uses inner tubes, screws, bolt fastenings and bike parts. An inner tube ring is priced at around £4.50, with a detailed necklace costing up to £42. Alexandra’s jewellery is available to buy from the College’s M.A.D.E Here shop in Newcastle town centre.
A NUMBER of top hairdressers including celebrity crimper Lee Stafford, X Factor stylist Jamie Stevens and the awardwinning Anne Veck have visited the College this year in a bid to encourage apprenticeship recruitment. The College and its Transform Salon & Spa are continuing to work with a selection of the UK’s top hairdressers throughout the new year to highlight the benefits of apprentices to local employers. Anthony Keates, Curriculum Manager, at NULC said:“The free events are designed to showcase quality work by top hairdressers to local businesses and let employers know that we can support them.” The National Apprenticeship Service will provide AGE 16 to 24 grants – with an individual value of £1,500 – to eligible employers in respect of qualifying apprentices. AGE 16 to 24 is available to employers of fewer than 1,000 people, who can confirm they are not able to employ the apprentice without the initiative and who have not had a new recruit or existing employee start an apprenticeship in the last 12 months.
A CUT ABOVE: celebrity crimper Lee Stafford shows-off his skills.

Courses for carers offer a confidence boost NULC is working with A4E to give personal assistants the confidence to be better carers – with funding available from A4E to cover the cost of the courses. Mark Bradbury, aged 47, and from Tunstall, is a part-time carer for his nephew Josh, who suffers from vaccine-induced encephalitis. Josh is 18, but has a mental age of four and requires round the clock care. Mark, said:“When I was made redundant I started to help my sister care for Josh to give her a break. I quickly realised that I needed to increase my confidence in how to deal with him.” Mark completed short, three-hour courses in Health and Safety, Manual Handling, Medication Awareness and Autism. He is now working towards a Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce. All the courses were funded through A4E. Mark continued:“The courses have helped me better understand Josh and his development. I now feel much more confident that I can give him a better standard of care and I would urge anyone who is a personal assistant to do the courses.”
