rumroll, please. On the pages that follow, we're thrilled to present the winners of the first-ever Hammy Awards, a readers-choice contest sponsored by The Smithfield Times. We weren't sure just what to expect when we announced the Hammys last spring, but your response blew us away. More than 2,000 people in Isle of Wight and Surry cast 81,000 votes in some 200 categories, selecting their favorite people, places, things and organizations. In full disclosure, it must be noted that this was not a scientific survey and never was intended to be. The Hammys are simply a fun way for our readers to sound off on everything they love about our community, expressed through online voting this summer. Once the voting round closed the top

three nominees with the most votes became the winner and finalists in each category. You’ll disagree with some of the results, you will be surprised by some and find yourself nodding in agreement on many. The best way to show your favorite businesses your support, of course, is to continue giving them your business. After that, you can recommend your friends give them a shot, too. Meanwhile, have a little fun learning the winners of the inaugural Hammys. We hope the results remind you to visit an old favorite you may not have been to in a while. Maybe you can also try something you see that will become a new favorite, too. And be sure to vote in the 2022 Hammys. Stay tuned for details next spring.
