Alan Stephen Nogiec
April 18, 1949-November 20, 2021
The 2022 Isle of Wight County Fair will be dedicated to honor the memory of Alan Stephen Nogiec. Alan provided tireless effort and invaluable service to the community in a number of ways, but specifically to the county fair for many years. He was involved with and instrumental in reviving the Isle of Wight County Fair in 1994. He served as Fair Manager for over a decade, and proudly watched as the fair grew in size and atten dance each year.
He oversaw the move of the fair from the courthouse area to the permanent Joel C. Bradshaw Fairgrounds, where the fair is held annually, helping in the begin nings to guide the fair to what it has become today.
Alan gave his heart and soul to the fair, leaving a huge legacy as he helped lead it, with several chairmen through a major growth period, always looking at what was best for the next fair, while ensuring it kept to its country heritage and roots. Through his hard work, enthusiasm, and leadership, the fair continued to thrive and has become the premier event of the county.
For all he did to lead and grow the Isle of Wight County Fair, one of the best in Virginia, we the fair committee dedicate this 2022 Fair to the memory of Alan S. Nogiec.

From the Chairman
To our Fair Friends and Family:
On behalf of the entire Isle of Wight County Fair Committee, I would like to cordially invite you to our International and Statewide award winning 29th annual County Fair. The Committee has planned another great event this year to honor and celebrate our community. The theme for this year is “Stars and Stripes in Isle of Wight” to commemorate the Isle of Wight County Fair Committee’s commitment to bring you a patriotic salute to its deep and strong agricultural heritage. We are look ing forward and hoping for this year’s fair to be our best yet!!!
We have two events for an early kick-off to the fair again this year, with our very popular and exciting Truck and Tractor Points Pull the night of Saturday, Septem ber 10th and the wonderful and delicious Seafood Fest on Wednesday, September 14th featuring all you care to eat fried cat fish, steamed shrimp, fried chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, hushpuppies and bev erages, with entertainment by local band “Hickory Knoll.”
We are also excited and so very happy to have three new buildings this year in place of the three largest tents where we house the agricultural and livestock exhibits; they are the Field and Garden Building, the 4-H Show Building and the Poultry, Rabbit and Livestock Building. The buildings can now be utilized all year
long for various events in lieu of tents for just a few days!!
There are quite a few new and exciting things at the fair this year in addition to a few of the great attractions we have had in past years. We are bringing Southwest Dairy Farmers Mobile Dairy Classroom back this year, where they will be doing ed ucational milking demonstrations over by the Field and Garden Building. Laser Tag is coming back and best of all, it is free to the patrons. Another returning and popu lar attraction we are having this year, is Axe Throwing, a great experience indeed. The Demolition Derby is back again on Sunday afternoon, a now prevalent event to our fair! The ever-popular Hay Bale decorating contest continues where round bales of hay are decorated by the schools, various businesses, and a few individu als. This year, fair attendees will be able to get admission tickets cheaper if bought online in lieu of at the gate!!! Please visit our website at thefairiscoming.com for more detail.
The fair is also bringing back the excite ment of “Bull Riding” and “Barrel Racing” along with “Mutton Bustin” and “Mini Bull Riding” at the Rodeo arena with real cowboys!! In the Field and Garden Build ing, our local farmers and gardeners can compete for best crops, and the little ones can play in a corn /soybean box. In part nership with the Isle of Wight Schools,
there will be goats, rab bits, chick ens and maybe even a heifer or two, where they are showcasing their Proj ect Based Learning farming skills. Our local 4-H folks will feature a feeder pig, heifer show, goat show, and ham competitions in the 4-H Show Build ing.
Be sure to visit our International Award Winning, Agriculture Education Center, a donated grain bin that houses flat screen tvs with various videos featuring planting, growing and harvesting a variety of farm crops and the raising of livestock including birthing of animals. If you watch closely, many of the videos feature some of our lo cal area farmers. In that area is a farm life wall mural that the children will be able to color and fill in and various games. Out side, they will be able to shell some corn on an old antique corn sheller, milk a cow in our Farmer for a Day display, and play to their hearts content in the huge sand box out in front of the center.
Street.” On Saturday night will be coun try singer and songwriter, Frankie Bal lard, national recording artist with chart topping songs such as “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” “Young and Crazy,” “It All Started with a Beer,” and “Helluva Life.” Be sure the checkout Frankie Ballard headline with opening act “Griffin Lane.” We have many popular regional and local bands en tertaining on both stages, including The Mullins Sisters, Cross Over Band, Runnin’ Shine, and on Sunday during the car show, there will be the Whiskey River Band!! Deggeller Attractions will be here to provide a large variety of midway rides for all ages. We will have twenty-four food vendors (mostly local) to provide a huge variety of wonderful fair food, to satisfy al most any appetite. There will be Antique Tractors and equipment, Monster Truck Rides, the Car Show, Facepainting and Camel and Pony Rides.

Hometown favorite Griffin Lane to play main stage
Clay and Nancy Griffin both have been performing for more than 40 years and to gether on stage for the past 27 years.
But the Smithfield residents come from very different musical backgrounds.
Nancy has played all avenues of music, including country, rhythm and blues and pop genres, while Clay has stayed close to his country roots most of his life.
They have always enjoyed perform ing, yet also relish rehearsal time and jamming in the studio with their band members and friends. Their close rela tionships make Griffin Lane what it has always been known for: fun and entertain ing.
Clay and Nancy Griffin’s brand of country, soul and classic rock music echoes great summertime vibes that make you want to turn it up, roll down the win dows and sing your heart out.
Clay is a singer-songwriter who has been making waves with his strong, highenergy voice for years within the country music arena. His delivery of the lyrics brings you to the point of sometimes feel ing exactly what he is feeling within the content of the song.
Growing up in Smithfield, Clay found
himself singing Hank Williams Sr. on the school bus at the age of 7, however, he did not actually begin on stage performances until the age of 23. Self taught to be the lead and only vocalist for his first band, Southern Tradition, he rocked Virginia and North Carolina for years, performing mostly Hank Williams Sr. and Jr. along with David Allen Coe and many other country artists.
Clay penciled an album in the early 1990s while fronting The Southern Tradi tion Band. Some of the area favorites off of the album were Salem, Va. and Gossip.
When Clay and Nancy married in 1993 Griffin Lane band was born. Clay has opened for many Nashville national acts over the years and has performed many times on Music Row in Nashville.
Nancy Pile-Griffin grew up in a musi cal family; singing together from child hood, she learned the magic of melody and harmony intertwined. Throughout her life she has performed in a variety of ven ues all over the country; musical theater, country music and pop bands and combos, and in her church choir as a first soprano.
Her vocal range and musical style spans a wide base, from Emmylou Har

who praised Ballard’s voice and called the song “an above average debut effort.” The song debuted at Number 59 on the Hot Coun try Songs charts dated for the week ending June 12, 2010, and peaked at number 33 in early 2011.
On Jan. 7, 2011, Ballard made his debut appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.
He released his second single, “A Buncha Girls,” in early 2011. This song also made the top 40. Both of his singles are included on his self-titled debut album, released in May 2011. Also in 2011, he opened for Lady Antebellum.
In 2013, Ballard moved to Warner Bros. Records and released his third single, “Hellu va Life.” This was the lead single to his sec ond album, Sunshine & Whiskey. It became his first number 1 single in early 2014. Later in the year, the album’s title track went to number 1. “Young & Crazy,” the album’s third single, also went to number 1.
The first single from Ballard’s third al bum, “It All Started with a Beer,” was re leased to country radio on Nov. 16, 2015. The album, El Rio, was released on June 10, 2016. The album’s second single, “Cigarette,” was released to country radio on Aug. 8, 2016.
Ballard co-wrote “I Came to Git Down” on Big & Rich’s 2014 album Gravity.
Frankie Ballard achieved country stardom with his 2014 album, "Sunshine & Whiskey," which produced three No. 1 singles. In 2017, he married Christina Murphy, owner of Old Smokey Boots in Nashville.

Firefighter Training Show Majestik Spectacular Thrill Show
The Firefighter Training Show plays off every child’s curiosity to one day be a “Firefighter - Hero.” The show allows volunteers from the audience, usually kids but sometimes adults, to become firefighter trainees (audi ence participation show). After being fitted in fire jacket and helmet the new trainees are introduced to the audience as their next generation of heroes, and the volunteer firefighters are divided into two teams.
When the alarm tones sound calling engine one to duty, it’s all trainees on deck. Each firefighter trainee/ team gets to complete the basic tasks at a simulated fire scene: laying out fire hose, attaching it to the fire truck and putting on a nozzle. Using a real fire extinguisher to squirt water at simulated flames in a smoke rescue building in hopes they can knock the flames out of the window putting out the fire. (To enhance the simulated fire effect an odorless, non-toxic, white smoke is used; the smoke dissipates in 1 to 3 minutes).
The dialogue between the fire chief the audience and the new trainees is riddled with humor and educational information, such as, in case of fire, “Get Outside and Stay Outside,” only firefighters attempt rescues. In be tween fire alarms the fire chief also introduces important fire safety lessons such as “Don’t Hide, Get Outside” and “Crawl Low, Under Smoke.”
A Motorcycle Stunt Show!
This show combines the best sport athletes and the best thrill circus acts and stunt perform ers from around the world in one show that in cludes special effects and a gorgeous set-up. The show is created by Dominguez Entertainment to bring a action, excitement and high skills. This amazing show is for the entire family with live singing, beautiful divas, death-defying stunt per formers, comedy and more.
Professional stunt performers will entertain daily Thursday through Sunday.
The Ninja Experience
Daily Ninja performances are on tap daily at this year's fair.
Prepare yourself for high-flying, jawdropping, in-your-face action with the Ninja Experience. This one-of-a-kind stage production will “quench your thirst” for comedy and danger as the ninjas take it to the extreme.

We started serving food at the Isle of Wight County Fair when it was across the street at the Court House. We have enjoyed all of the years since, and will be present again at this year.
Come by our new metal structure at the Fairgrounds and enjoy some good food. We are still on the corner of Blue Ribbon and Cotton Candy Lanes. Ask any one working how you might join our club and enjoy the fellowship shared by our members. We hope to see you there!

ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
County fairs historically promote and highlight agriculture in the area.
Agricultural Education
There will be many exhibits highlight ing the work of the small farmer. You will see displays on bee hives, small barns, peanut stacks, pumpkin patches, portable chicken houses and fenced areas, row crops, farmers markets and even lem onade stands. In addition, there will be several displays on gardening and horti culture put on by the Western Tidewater Master Gardeners and competitions for field crops, vegetable crops and floral dis plays. For more information, contact Mi chelle Billups at 757-646-0780.
The Agriculture Education Center is a 1,000-square-foot grain bin that was donated by fair supporters in 2014 and is used to educate young people and adults
about the importance of farming, crop growing, gardening and raising livestock. Six workstations offer games to play that provide a journey through owning and op erating a farm, selling at a farmers mar ket, the importance of whole grains in our diet and understanding the mysteries of where food comes from. The Agriculture Education Center is set up with hands-on activities and large screen monitors to see animal birthing demonstrations, plant ing and harvesting by local farmers. The grain bin is totally educational and fun for families.
For more information on the Agricul ture Education Center, contact Theresa Woodall at therwoodall@gmail.com.

State Fair set for Sept. 23-Oct. 2
Staff report
Beyond the bright lights of the midway and the enticing aroma of fair foods, the spirit of the State Fair of Virginia is root ed in agriculture.
During the fair’s 10-day run, from Sept. 23 through Oct. 2 at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell, fairgoers can immerse themselves in Virginia agriculture and forestry through numerous attractions. From live animal competitions and exhib its to creative art and culinary contests that highlight Virginia-grown foods, the State Fair has agriculture connections for all ages.
The fair will commence with a celebra tion of Virginia dairies through Dairy Days, Sept. 23-25. The dairy-themed week end will help promote the Federation of Virginia Food Banks’ Milk for Good ini tiative.
In partnership with FVFB, The Dairy Alliance, the Virginia State Dairymen’s Association and the Dairy Club at Virgin ia Tech, the State Fair will offer dairy-re
lated attractions in the Meadow Pavilion. It also will sell frosty milkshakes, with proceeds benefiting Milk for Good.
The fair’s Dairy Days will coincide with additional dairy programming, which includes competitions, calf births and milking demonstrations at the South Land Dairy Farmer Center and The Mead ow’s livestock barns.
In the Meadow Pavilion, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation, which owns the State Fair, will host an educational display. Fairgoers can explore farms vir tually in the Farm Tour Tractor Cab and learn about Virginia commodities at the Farm Product Kiosk.
A wide range of agricultural program ming will be offered in the family-focused Harvest Landing area, including Young MacDonald’s Farm with the ever-popular sliding ducks, hatching chicks and other farm animals. Guests in this area also can participate in an agricultural trivia game during the giant pumpkin and watermel on weigh-off on Sept. 24.
Visitors can explore the horticulture
tent, where the products of farms and home gardens are displayed, including crops like corn, tobacco and wheat. This also is where fairgoers can view the win ning giant pumpkin, which in some years weighs over 1,000 pounds.
Other attractions include the pigeon and dove tent, where visitors can see over 300 species of birds and learn about their homing abilities and other fun facts.
Youth will prepare to show cattle, goats, sheep and swine during livestock shows that are part of the State Fair Youth Scholarship Program, and fairgo ers are encouraged to visit the Sale of Champions on the fair’s second Satur day. AgriScience, forestry, crop and farm equipment competitions are among other 4-H and FFA events.
The Natural Resources Area also will provide exciting lessons about Virginia’s aquatic species, reptiles and raptors.
In Heritage Village, guests can admire antique tractors, steam engines, home goods and tools, or enjoy demonstrations of centuries-old trades like blacksmith
ing, glass blowing, rope making and wool spinning.
Adults and youth can compete in the creative and culinary arts competitions, whose winning entries will be displayed throughout the fair. Creative arts entries are due Aug. 26, and culinary entries are due Sept. 2. Contest rules and sign-up de tails can be found online.
Online ticket sales have begun. Visit StateFairVa.org to purchase tickets and to view details of the fair schedule, con cert series and free entertainment.
The State Fair of Virginia is held each fall at its permanent home at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County. The event celebrates the best of Virginia’s past, present and future through scholarship initiatives, creative programming and a focus on the commonwealth’s agriculture and natural resources industries. Virgin ia Farm Bureau Holding Corp. operates the fair and is a subsidiary of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.
