San Bernardino County Supervisor Josie Gonzales and Assemblymember Cheryl Brown attended the Latino Health Collaborative’s Posada Navideña, a winter holiday event at Muscoy Elementary School. They wished everybody a Merry Christmas and took pictures with Santa Clause and students from Muscoy Elementary School. Posadas are a cultural tradition rooted in the blending of Christianity with Mesoamerican cultures. The word posada means shelter or lodging, and refers to the place Jesus Christ was born. With roots in Spain and Catholicism, the posada has been practiced in Mexico since the 16th century. To this day, people in Mexico and Central America mark the nine days for Christmas by holding a posada each night.

The Latino Health Collaborative (LHC) was launched in November of 2004 as a group of community stakeholders focused on finding ways to increase access to care and to eliminate health disparities. In this relatively short period, LHC has garnered the reputation as a leader in community organizing, coalition building, and health policy advocacy and has experienced rapid growth, from a handful of committed individuals to over 50 members representing faith- and community-based organizations, county behavioral and health departments, community clinics, hospitals, school districts, and representatives of county, and state elected officials.

The event provided gifts to hundreds of children in the Muscoy Learn more at http:/www.latinohealth.org Elementary School area.

Inspired by the British Museum’s highly successful exhibit, “A History of the World in 100 Objects," curators at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum have carefully selected a wide assortment of 50 objects to represent Riverside’s past. Alone, each object may not tell a story, but together they create a context which reveals the history of Riverside along the way. Mammoth molars, stage coach foot warmers, comal cooking stones, chinese medicine bottles, photographs, and more will reveal the rich history of Riverside from pre-history to 1930. Highlights from Riverside's history also include: Spring Rancheria, Chinatown, John W. North, early transportation, the citrus boom, Harada family, water, recreation, fire department, and more! The exhibit will be installed in two parts: the first part which will be on display from March 7, 2013 through January 4, 2015 will cover the prehistory of the region and take us through 1930. The second installation will cover modern Riverside history from 1930 to present. Learn more at http://riversideca.gov/museum/

Azusa Pacific Cougars Continue To Rake In Honors

Former PBS NewsHour Anchor Ray Suarez to Speak at UC Riverside’s Hays Press-Enterprise Lecture His topic is “Getting Ready for the Next America.”

After making a run to the National Christian College Athletics Association championship match, the Azusa Pacific women’s volleyball team had six players receive national honors, the NCCAA announced. Senior middle blocker Christy Cain highlighted the list, taking home first team All-American recognition, along with being named to the NCCAA All-Tournament team. Sophomore outside hitter Mattie Shelford took home second-team AllAmerican honors, while junior outside hitter Alicia Utke was named to the All-Tournament team. Junior hitter Hayley Beetstra, and defensive specialists Cori Esparza and Emily Ingalls were each given NCCAA Scholar Athlete honors.

“We had a great season and it’s a great honor to have so many awards for the outstanding individual play this season. Everyone on our team worked so hard this season, and as it goes for any individual awards, they wouldn’t be possible without the team success, and all season that’s what each of our players worked towards,” said head Available on Amazon.com

Veteran journalist Ray Suarez will survey the changing landscape of American journalism at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 in the University Theatre at UC Riverside. His appearance is free and open to the public as part of the 46th Hays Press-Enterprise Lecture, founded in 1966 by Howard H “Tim” Hays to explore issues in journalism. Suarez, who spent 14 years at the PBS NewsHour, has titled his speech: “Getting Ready for the Next America.” Just recently he has been named permanent host of Al Jazeera America’s daily program “Inside Story.” The lecture honors the legacy of Howard H “Tim” Hays, Jr., the longtime owner and publisher of The PressEnterprise newspaper. His son, Tom Hays, created an endowment fund to make sure the tradition of the lecture lived on in Riverside even after his father’s death in 2011. Although the talk is free, reservations are requested and may be made online or by calling (951) 827-3144
