Director’s Message
W
elcome to the 2012 Smithsonian Affiliations National Conference. We are pleased that so many have come from near and far to participate in this important gathering. Year after year, the Conference has been fertile ground for exploring collaboration opportunities, sharing best practices, building organizational relationships, and creating new friendships. Now in our 16th year the Affiliations program has evolved into the “two way street” originally envisioned. This is evidenced in the steady stream of Affiliate experts serving on Smithsonian planning panels, Affiliate artifacts, artworks and exhibits making appearances in Smithsonian venues, and Affiliate educators working side by side with Smithsonian colleagues in rural and underserved communities. In addition and with greater frequency, Affiliates are finding each other, and are sharing their collections, exhibitions and expertise. Sometimes, it all begins with a simple conversation at our annual conference. We have much to learn from each other and are pleased that this year’s conference demonstrates our “two way street” with an equal balance of presenters from both the Smithsonian and Affiliate organizations. We continue to cover a wide range of topics, while giving strong voice to those programs that amplify the way our organizations are having an impact on learning and education. In this manner, we will continue to address the greatest challenge facing all museums and educational organizations: “to inspire generations through knowledge and discovery.” We are delighted that you have taken the time to join us and look forward to a lively exchange of ideas, as always, in the company of colleagues and friends. More than 140 out of 169 Affiliates responded to the questionnaire and direct interviews, giving a very rich body of data and a wide range of opinions. During this Town Hall, results will be shared, next steps will be discussed and other topics of interest will also be addressed.

This workshop will challenge Affiliate partners to work collaboratively to solve a mission connecting Smithsonian collections to real world issues, develop ideas as a team, gather opinions from Smithsonian visitors and create a digital presentation for feedback.
