Throughout your river cruise you’ll be accompanied by a Smithsonian Journeys Expert who brings depth and insight to your destination. Yet, special gatherings such as a Smithsonian Journeys welcome reception and special Travelers Corner discussions allow for smaller, more intimate group activities. A Note on Activity Level

Our river cruises are full, immersive programs. They are ideal for travelers in good health with overall good mobility, and who are comfortable participating in at least three hours of group activity per day. Participants must be able to navigate the ship’s gangway unassisted. Many excursions require walking for extended periods of time during museum and city tours. Excursion: Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. Embark on a walking tour of pretty Conflans-SainteHonorine. As its name suggests, it sits at the confluence of two rivers, the Seine and the Oise. Because of its strategic location, the town has been the capital of France’s inland waterways since the mid-19th century. Hundreds of barges fill the harbor. Once used for commerce, most are houseboats today.

Excursion: Versailles. Journey to Versailles, France’s most opulent palace and a World Heritage site. Versailles was France’s political capital and seat of the royal court from 1682–1789. See the Hall of Mirrors, which is tied to peace treaties from the 17th century to the 20th century; the opulent King’s Apartments; and grand rooms of the Queen’s Apartments. Enjoy free time to stroll through the formal gardens on your own. Return to the ship, which departs for Rouen this evening.

Day 4 | Rouen |

Excursion: Ancient Abbeys. Visit the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey of Jumièges, one of the most powerful abbeys in medieval France. It was one of several monasteries built along the Seine. The ruins of the current building are from the 11th century, but the original monastery was built 300 years earlier. Continue to Abbey SaintWandrille. Admire the abbey’s buildings, which flaunt rococo-style and Gothic decorations. The abbey is home to a thriving monastic community.

Excursion: Rouen. Explore Rouen’s historic medieval quarter, filled with ornate Gothic churches and half-timbered houses. Visit Notre-Dame de Rouen, the city’s grand cathedral. The ship departs Rouen this evening.

Excursion: Keukenhof Gardens. Journey to Keukenhof Gardens, an 80-acre paradise of brightly colored tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and other gorgeous blooms. After a guided tour, enjoy time to explore on your own. More than nine miles of footpaths crisscross the grounds, allowing you to immerse yourself in this enchanting setting. Get to know your traveling companions at a welcome reception and dinner tonight. The ship departs Amsterdam.

Day 4 | Kampen |

Arrive this morning in Kampen, a historic port town that was part of the influential medieval trading alliance known as the Hanseatic League, Personalize Your Journey | Choose one of the following excursions. The two excursions in Kampen feature a walking tour to see St. Nicholas church, the oldest in Kampen; the Gothic House; the Old Town Hall; and the town’s gates, part of the wall that once encircled Kampen.

•Kampen and the Hanseatic League. This walking tour through historic Kampen includes a visit to a kogge ship, a typical sailing vessel favored by Hanseatic traders.

• Kampen and Dutch Beer. Explore historic Kampen and visit a local brewery to learn about Dutch beer and enjoy a tasting.

•Giethoorn. Travel to Giethoorn, a village where residents go about their daily lives using boats and canals instead of cars and roads. This picturesque village in the heart of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park features 18th-century, thatchedroof farmhouses. Glide through the canals aboard a punt, a traditional wooden boat used to glide through the canals.

Excursion: The Zeeland Coast and the Dutch Battle Against the Sea. Travel to the artificial island of Neeltje Jans and its Delta Expo. Learn about the Delta Works, a series of 65 massive dams and storm surge barriers, conceived after the devastating 1953 North Sea flood.

Explore Veere, a charming seaside town, on your own. The ship docks here overnight.

Day 7 | Middelburg | Bruges, Belgium | Antwerp |

Personalize Your Journey | Choose one of the following excursions. All excursions feature a guided walking tour of Bruges. See the medieval guildhalls along the Market Square, the 12th-century Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Belfry Tower.

•Cultural Bruges. Visit the Groeninge Museum, known for its Flemish Primitive paintings and Flemish expressionist masterpieces.

•Bruges and Beer. Belgium embraces beer as its national drink. Visit a family-owned brewery and learn about the history of Belgian brewing, followed by a glass of freshly brewed beer.
