The World Awaits!

I am delighted to introduce Smithsonian Active Journeys, a new line of trips that combines the authentic, enriching experiences that you expect from Smithsonian, with the reward of discovering a new destination on your own power. Exploring from the trail—or by kayak or bicycle—is the ultimate “slow travel” experience. It gives you a unique perspective and allows you to take your time and soak up your surroundings, to stop to appreciate a spectacular view at the end of a climb or to meander through a village along the trail. When designing these trips, we sought to accentuate both the natural world and local culture. Each journey is led by a local guide steeped in knowledge about the destination. You’ll find opportunities to spend time with people in communities you visit, to sample the cuisine, and learn about everyday life as well as the region’s flora, fauna, and geology. Our Active Journeys offer an intimate and meaningful way to connect with a destination and its people—and to be immersed in the wonders of nature.
