Explore the World from the Trail
The fi rst departures of our new Active Journeys launched this spring, bringing our travelers to compelling trails from the Costa Rican rainforest to the vineyards of Tuscany.
This type of travel experience—combining physical activity such as walking, hiking, or biking with authentic engagement with local culture—has struck a chord with our travelers, and we are pleased to announce a host of new itineraries for 2025.
In the pages that follow, you’ll fi nd a Himalayan journey that will have you hiking to beautiful temples in Bhutan and to remote mountain villages in Nepal’s Annapurna range. To complement our popular hike on Spain’s Camino de Santiago, we crafted two new hiking trips on renowned pilgrimage routes. In Japan, set off on the fi nal leg of the Shikoku trail, trekking to the last seven temples along the 88-temple route—and bookend your trek with visits to Kyoto, Tokyo, and Okayama. And experience Portugal from the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago on a journey that also includes hikes in the Douro Valley wine region and stays in World Heritage sites of Porto and Coimbra. We hope you’ll join us on the trail!

Smithsonian Active Journeys
Getting outside to explore not only does wonders for the body and mind, it is also an extraordinary way to experience the world. Our new Active Journeys are small-group trips that seek out the road less traveled and offer engaging adventures in the great outdoors. While these journeys are designed around activities such as hiking, walking, kayaking, and biking, they bear all the hallmarks of a Smithsonian Journeys travel experience: outstanding local guides, unique enrichment opportunities, and an in-depth exploration of nature and cultural history.
The Trail Is Calling!
From the Alps to the Andes, we’ve selected routes for their spectacular scenery and their accessibility to both occasional and seasoned outdoorspeople. Most hikes and walks range from 3 to 7 miles a day, with low to moderate elevation changes, and some trips also include opportunities to kayak, canoe, or bike ride (see activity level descriptions on the following page). On certain itineraries, you’ll have the option to take an easier or more challenging route if you wish. After each exhilarating day, you will return to comfortable accommodations chosen for their sense of place and their unbeatable location.
A Sustainable Approach to Small-Group Travel
With just 12 to 18 travelers using mostly their own feet to get around, our groups are attuned to their environment, making a minimal impact on nature and spending time in local communities. You’ll get acquainted with the people and their traditions and support small businesses such as learning about sustainable coffee cultivation in Costa Rica, and enjoying a home-cooked lunch at a family farm in Iceland.
Smithsonian Active Journeys are run in collaboration with G Adventures, a leading small group adventure travel company and a pioneer in sustainability for more than 30 years. From promoting community tourism to protecting wildlife while traveling, G Adventures operates with a commitment to traveling responsibly.
Each Active Journey Includes:
• A knowledgeable trip leader and local guides
• Small groups with a maximum of 12 to 18 travelers
• Airport transfers upon arrival and departure
• Daily activities and excursions
• Internal flights where applicable
• Included meals are indicated by B (breakfast),
L (lunch), and D (dinner) throughout each itinerary
• Gratuities
Supporting the Smithsonian Mission
When you travel with Smithsonian Journeys, your participation supports Smithsonian’s mission to preserve natural and cultural heritage, advance research, and share our resources with the world.
Choose the Activity Level That Fits Your Pace
To help you select a journey that suits your pace and ability, we have designated four activity levels: light, moderate, energetic, and strenuous. Light trips typically include 2 to 5 miles of walking or easy hiking on several days of the itinerary, whereas on moderate trips, you’ll hike or walk up to 7 miles on most days with some elevation gain. Energetic trips will have you hiking or trekking 4 to 10 miles most days with significant elevation changes.
Stay tuned for our strenuous journeys: they are reserved for our most rigorous treks and will include 6 to 14 miles of daily hikes or treks over mountainous terrain.
For each of these activity levels, the itinerary may also include biking, kayaking, or canoeing. On certain trips, you’ll have the option to take longer or shorter hikes.
Enrichment Every Step of the Way
Wherever our Active Journeys take you, you’ll gain insights into the area’s cuisine and cultural traditions, wildlife and geology, connecting with local people as well as experts in the field. You may find yourself sitting among mountain gorillas in Rwanda with a knowledgeable park guide—and learning about everyday life while sharing a meal in a family home in Kigali. You’ll hike from one centuries-old temple to the next along Japan’s Shikoku pilgrimage route and get a taste of rural life on a bike ride amid the paddies of the Kibi Plain.
From olive oil producers on the Greek island of Crete to a shaman in Peru, spend time with local people who interpret both the natural and cultural landscape. Complement your time on the trail with cooking classes or wine tastings, guided tours of regional museums, and visits to historic sites.
Unique Accommodations in Ideal Locations
When selecting accommodations for these active trips, we seek unique properties that showcase the region’s natural beauty and capture the local character. We choose them for their comfort and their relaxed atmosphere, and also for their location—sometimes just a few steps from the trailhead. Whether you stay in a lakeside lodge surrounded by Patagonian peaks or a family-owned country inn in Ireland’s music capital, you will fi nd a welcoming retreat after a day exploring the great outdoors. In some cases, your accommodations are an integral part of your experience.
Your home at the end of Spain’s Camino de Santiago is an 18th-century convent just steps from Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral, where you can relax in lovely cloisters and courtyards, dine beneath the arched ceiling of the old refectory, and enjoy a swim with a view in the former laundry house. Settle into a chalet-style spa hotel in the heart of the Swiss Alps, and relax after the day’s hike with a soak in the inviting pool and jacuzzi. Or, in Tuscany and Cinque Terre, stay among the vineyards of Chianti at a delightful agriturismo that dates back to the 1600s and produces its own wine and olive oil.
San Francisco Hotel Monumento, A Coruña, Spain Hôtel Nendaz 4 Vallées & Spa, Nendaz, SwitzerlandLeaders With Deep Local Knowledge
Your trip leaders are avid outdoorspeople themselves who come from the region you’re exploring and know the trails, the natural history, and the local culture inside and out. More than trail guides, they are also some of the best tour managers in the business, sensitive to the different needs of the group and able to adapt nimbly to changing circumstances and unexpected opportunities to make the most of each day. With their native knowledge of your destination, they will be your best resource for finding hidden gems in your free time— from restaurants loved by the locals to worthwhile sites to visit.
Along the way, local experts will join you to share their perspectives and insights. It might be a vintner who leads you on a winery tour along Spain’s Camino de Santiago, or a seasoned guide who can share the little-known stories of famous places on a walk through Edinburgh or Florence.
