One of the things that I am most passionate about in life is drawing. Respectfully, Drawing is an essential skill that every designer should attempt to master. Smitty Lynch The ability to communicate ideas www.smittylynch.com effectively with pen and paper is one of the greatest skills any one designer can have. I think James Richards, FASLA stated it best: “Why draw? In an ever more digital world, with all of the technology available to us, is hand drawing still relevant?....As more tech-savvy graduates enter the marketplace and better visualization tools become available, my work as a consulting designer-diagramming and sketching on the “front end” of complex projectshas exploded. I’m hand drawing more now than ever in my 30-year career. I’m convinced that this demand isn’t because I’m a particularly gifted designer, but because the ability to capture visual impressions by hand, very quickly, is increasingly rare. And with the loss of these skills, our design firm clients tell us, a measure of spontaneity and creative freshness may have been lost in the process....Why draw? Not to become great illustrators but, to unlock creative ideas through Site plan and master planning graphics created by the author, ©CMSS Architects.

URBAN PLAN/ MIXED-USE This was a year-long project that was broken down into two parts - one being a team effort consisting of two person teams, and the second, an individual project based on the resultant design. The first part consisted of the design of an under-developed area of downtown Hampton - planning the layout and the usage of the property. The second, looked at the smaller piece of the

puzzle. This part involved taking a block within the layout we created and refining it through design. I chose to do a mixed-use project that was located on one of the larger, more unusually shaped blocks in our design. By breaking the block into smaller pieces and creating several smaller buildings instead of one large one, I hoped to achieve a more human scale

to my project. The resulting design provides several different uses within the block while maintaing certain visual lines important to the overall design.

This project involved the design of a new cultural center to fit within the fabric of downtown Newport News... I chose to focus on a center for jazz music because of its incredible influence in this area.... The buildings design draws heavily from the eccentricities of jazz music. The structure provides the underlying rhythm while the walls and skin of the building flow like the winding melodies of jazz music...

TRANSIT HUB

The goal was to develop a new transit hub for the town of Phoebus in Hampton, Virginia on an abandoned waterfront site. The design chosen reflects the needs dictated by the program for bus, water and light-rail services as well as an opportunity to reconnect the town to the waterfront.

This project addresses the challenges of building an elevated structure... Located in Bayou LaBatre, Louisiana, the purpose of this project was to design a small community medical facility for a client who lost their practice during hurricane Katrina...This is an exploration in form and skin while addressing issues of programming, circulation and accessibility...
