OPERABILITY

acade operation methods used in this pro ect are derived from both traditional and contemporary precedents

n traditional neighborhoods such as

ukchon and eochon operable facades are utili ed in order to provide a variable threshold between ad acent spaces he pro ect uses this concept as a catalyst for spatial organi ation and spatial relationships

SITE LOCATION: Revelstoke, British Columbia ELEVATION: 2000 ft PROGRAM: Resort Spa The Steel Tree Spa is characterized as a place that explores the coherence between structure and the senses. At a s l o p e o f 2 7 °, t h e s i t e b e c k o n s f o r i n n o v a t i v e s t r u c t u r e . A s a result, the architecture is inserted into the mountainside producing cantilevered ‘capsules’ and a large, communal view deck. Descending down the mountainside, each of the five levels brings forth its own unique experience and function. Sight, touch, and smell become essential parameters that the designer must resolve. I posit that the conversation between nature and structure must accentuate the sensory experience. First, the built environment must respond to the site’s existing conditions, solar orientation, climate, and picturesque views. As a response, the Steel Tree Spa capitalizes on these parameters, thus providing the resident with views of Mt. Begbie, the Columbia River, and the adjacent ski runs.

ROLE OF WATER eferring to the site plan one may notice the blue streams of water running down the mountainside

hese streams serve three purposes

1] indicate the transition between ad acent spaces 2] serve as a medium through which nature directly influences the program 3] and provide the visitor with a sensorial e perience primarily sight and sound

DETAIL

SITE LOCATION: Seattle, Washington PROGRAM: Apartments + Bookstore The proposed site is placed within, and parallel, to Union Street between 1st Avenue and Alaskan Way. Union Street in particular possesses a certain quality unlike the adjacent streets. In essence, Union Street has a direct, visual connection to the bay, unobstructed by buildings along the wharf. Therefore, the proposed project seeks to retain this visual connection between the city and Elliott Bay via a solid/void relationship. The program is massed in a particular fashion that frames views of Elliott Bay from each apartment, while simultaneously

allowing

adjacent

residential

buildings

the same views (see massing diagram series). In addition, the project retains the primary axis of Union Street by means of an axial staircase. This grand staircase allows for a linear procession through the project, while also providing a sense of enclosure.

The wall embodies the core component of the library where books are archived and displayed. It is both monolithic and permeable in nature, performing as a primary source of information as well as an avenue for pedestrian circulation. The mass operates as a counterweight to the wall, structurally and c o n c e p t u a l l y. M o r e o v e r, t h e m a s s ’ s l i g h t w e i g h t i n f r a s t r u c t u r e h o u s e s program spaces that are characteristic of social engagement and intimate research. The landscape provides an alternative experience by manipulating the vertical displacement of the greenscape. The space created underneath the elevated greenscape allows for ample distribution of administrative and other social programs as a reminiscence of Potter’s Field. While the wall and the mass are highly connected, the landscape remains aligned to the site edge, connecting the street edge to the river’s edge.
