An Update on In-Person Activities and Worship at Smoke Rise As we entered the Advent season last year, our state and local area were experiencing a second surge in COVID-19 infections. At that time, the Administrative Council voted to cease in-person activities at the church. The Council agreed at that time to monitor conditions on the ground for signs of improvement and a decline in the numbers before restarting limited activities with continued safety protocols and precautions in place. On January 26, the Administrative Council met and unanimously approved the following proposal to begin a phased re-opening: On February 1, Smoke Rise Baptist Church will reopen for small groups of fewer than 25 people. The Weekday School, Digital Learning Center, Academy of Arts, and Smoke Rise Prep School will return to in-person learning with continued safety protocols on this date. Our church will offer the opportunity for in-person Sunday evening children and youth events, choir rehearsal and other activities with many of these events taking place outdoors and all events including our adopted safety protocols. Assuming that the number of COVID-19 cases continues to trend in the downward direction, plans for resuming in-person worship are tentatively set for later in February and in-person Sunday school in March. With all previous safety precautions and requirements in place, we plan to schedule two worship services at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM and to return to a rotating model for limited in-person Sunday school. We will continue to livestream worship at 11:00 AM each Welcome to Please follow the following Sunday and will also continue guidelines while on the grounds Zoom meeting options for Please follow the following guidelines while on Church. the of Smoke Rise Baptist Sunday school each week. grounds of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. The goal of the Administrative Council is to safely provide for the nurture and fellowship of our congregation, recognizing that people have varying degrees of comfort with this option. The Council continues to make difficult decisions in this unprecedented time of pandemic, as it seeks to honor our shared commitment to love each other and our neighbors as ourselves.

God has been faithful to us, even during our trials and tribulations, and will be faithful to us as we enter a new season. Certainly, we still have questions and will still face challenges; but I want you to know that we also have wonderful opportunities to renew our friendships and to foster new connections as we share God’s love with others.
The deepest expression of love is far more than candy, roses or hearts. It is observed in what Jesus did for us by yielding his life as a sacrifice for our salvation. In the picture of history, we can point to a cross and an empty tomb and say with confidence, “...and THIS is the love.”

A Season for Celebration In our year-end giving emphasis, “The Gifts of Christmas,” we set a lofty goal of raising $450,000 from November 15, 2020-December 31, 2020. Some of my colleagues in other congregations said such an effort would be impossible, especially in this season filled with so much uncertainty. I am pleased to report that we not only met our goal, but exceeded it by raising more than $545,000. This is not only an affirmation of the generosity of our congregation, but truly a confirmation of God’s work among us during this strange season and our commitment to continue to do meaningful ministry as we enter the new year. I was deeply moved to see so many gifts, big and small, some givers giving for the very first time, others as a fulfillment of their stewardship pledges, and still others giving as a special gift. I want to express my appreciation to all who gave. I know you share my excitement and celebrate this significant accomplishment with me. We enter this new year with wind in our sails and a renewed sense of hope in our heart confident that the God “who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it” (Philippians 1:6). A Season of Anticipation In the midst of the Coronavirus Crisis, my little girl, Emma Pearl, said a strange thing. She looked up at me and said, “I love tomorrow.” These words are echoing through my mind as we have entered 2021. We have not yet reached the end of this tunnel, but I think that we can all see a light. We are not yet worshiping together with hugs and handshakes, but we can imagine a day when we can once again hug, shake hands, and lift our voices in song. We have traveled through this long night, but the new morning is beginning to dawn. I am reminded of the old hymn, “Great is Thy faithfulness...morning by morning, new mercies, I see.” I don’t know about you, but I am with Emma Pearl. I love tomorrow. God has been faithful to us, even during our trials and tribulations, and will be faithful to us as we enter a new season. Certainly, we still have questions and will still face challenges; but I want you to know that we also have wonderful opportunities to renew our friendships and to foster new connections as we share God’s love with others. Some are looking at the future and filled with fear; but I am looking at the future filled with genuine anticipation and enthusiasm. I believe that “God is doing a new thing” in our midst (Isaiah 43:19). A Season of Reflection and Renewal Lent is a season of 40 days when Christians are encouraged to reflect on faith, repent from sins, and renew our commitment to Christ’s calling in our lives. It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 17, and concludes with the celebration of Easter on April 4. Christians have traditionally used this period to prepare their hearts for the celebration of the resurrection. This year, Rev. Becky Caswell-Speight has selected a wonderful devotional resource called “Grace-Filled Gratitude.” If you would like to receive a copy, send an email to Becky (rcspeight@smokerisebaptist.org) or call the church office. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity as we journey through the Lenten Season. With gratitude, anticipation, and excitement... Pastor Chris

Hymns! One of My Favorite Subjects I love hymns; I love to talk about hymns; I love to sing hymns; I love to listen to hymns. I was fortunate to grow up in a hymn-singing church. Every Sunday in Sunday school and worship, every Sunday evening in Training Union and in the evening service and every Wednesday night in prayer meeting, we put our well-worn, 1956 (turquoise) hymnals through their paces. I can recall lines from hymns from over 50 years ago— even when I cannot tell you what I had for breakfast this morning. It was not until I started my studies in seminary that I learned about the many hymn writers, apart from the very familiar, Fanny J. Crosby. The rich histories and backgrounds of these authors should be explored. There are stories and experiences that shaped and influenced their craft that we should know about. Probably one of the most familiar and beloved hymns of Baptist life is “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” The author of this hymn, Thomas Obediah Chisholm, was born in a log cabin in Kentucky on July 29, 1866. Chisholm wrote the hymn in 1923 while living in Vineland, New Jersey. It is difficult to imagine, considering its status among favorites, but the hymn was slow to take off among folks. Dr. Will H. Houghton, president of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, began using the hymn frequently in chapel services. It soared in popularity when George Beverly Shea and the Billy Graham Crusade Choir began singing it regularly in their meetings. The hymn tune, FAITHFULNESS, that this cherished text is set to was written by William Runyan in 1923. In the weeks ahead, you will begin to see more and more of this hymn title in our church publications as the Stewardship Committee has chosen it as the 2021 stewardship theme. Happy singing! -Danny Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, there is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; as Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed Thy hand hath provided Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23 NRSV).

JA ME S S MIT H - Pasto r al Car e Asso ciate
Occasionally, as we were raising young children, one of them would end up in my care when I needed to be in the office for a while. I quickly learned that our daughter could be entertained for hours with a few supplies from the workroom. I would make a little work station complete with pens and pencils in various colors, paper clips, tape and blank pages of paper. Her only instructions were to “create a picture or story for me.” Whatever she created often contained many hearts in various sizes and colors. There were big hearts, skinny hearts, pink hearts, red hearts. When she proudly presented her creation to me, I responded saying something like, “Wow, you’ve worked so hard! Tell me about this picture.” No matter what the picture might be, at some point Allison would indicate the hearts and proudly say, “...and THIS is the love.” February is a special month with significance touching the secular, romantic and spiritual realms. The shortest month of the year, it is often called “the month of love.” The deepest expression of love is far more than candy, roses or hearts. It is observed in what Jesus did for us by yielding his life as a sacrifice for our salvation. In the picture of history, we can point to a cross and an empty tomb and say with confidence, “...and THIS is the love.” Today’s world view often considers love as a mysterious force over which one has no control. The Bible gives us clarity about love. Love is patient and kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud. Love comes from God. God is love. No mystery here. When we are tempted to think that love is a warm fuzzy feeling, we should remember the Biblical view: Love is a choice. Matthew exhorts us to “love our enemies.” Jesus said all will know “that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” By understanding the nature of love and choosing to operate within it, we declare ourselves as followers of Christ. It's not the t-shirts we wear nor the magnetic symbol or bumper stickers on our cars that identify us as Christians—they will know us by our love. In the dead of winter, the trees are difficult to identify unless you are an expert. The bare branches all look alike to me. But in the spring, blossoms give a hint of what is to come with the eventual appearance of fruit. Soon, no one can mistake an apple tree for a peach tree. The fruit is the evidence. At a distance, Christians may look like everyone else. But with time and upon close inspection, the fruits of the Spirit appear. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and other attributes give evidence of life in Christ. The process of fruit being cultivated and grown challenges us to grow in Christ and produce the fruit of His Spirit. I confess I have a lot of cultivating work to do. How about you? Still working on patience, kindness, faithfulness or self-control? Every time I whine, “Lord, this is hard,” I am reminded to start with the love. We begin the journey of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 17. During this season of contemplation and reflection, may we join David’s cry, recorded in Psalm 51: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” As we create our pictures and tell our stories, May it be easy to point to the heart of our Christian experience and say, “...and THIS is the love.” Consider praying, “Lord, I love you. I give you my heart. I submit and yield all of my self to you. Make me more loving. Make me more forgiving. Make me more patient. Make me kinder and more self-controlled— that I might lift up the image of Christ through my life—to your praise and glory. Amen.” -Jim 8 | SMOKE RIS E BAPT IST.ORG

“Nope! But sometimes I like to close my eyes and imagine what it’d be like when summer does come.” Now why did I start singing (in my best Olaf voice) "In Summer" from Frozen. Maybe it was watching it with Liam for the one billionth time; or maybe my subconscious was telling me that one day it would be summer again when the bees would be buzzing, and blowing dandelion fuzz, and packed into buses heading on choir tour, and for a week at Passport.
February 21st 5-7 PM
We are looking forward. We are planning. Our hope is that our summer will be more normal than last year. Danny and I are currently planning choir tour that will take us to Western New York, June 18th - 27th. We are registered for Passport at Furman University, July 5th - 10th. We’ll pass along more information as we get it; so be on the look out.
SAVE THE DATE
We also want you to keep looking forward with a sense of hope. Hope is powerful. In Romans 12, verse 12 we read: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, continue steadfastly in prayer.” We’ve tried really hard to be patient during the tribulations of this past year and, at times, it has seemed like prayer is the only thing that we have to hold onto. I want us now to focus on the first part of this verse, “Rejoice in hope.” Don’t just hold onto hope: REJOICE IN IT!!! Dream dreams. Smile when you think about the future. Have a grin on your face as you write down your plans for the summer.

CONNEC T I N G AT SMOK E R I SE Finding New Ways t0 Celebrate
During 2020 much of our time as a staff has been spent searching for new ways to experience cherished traditions. Out of this search came Advent Inspiration and Inspired by Epiphany. Together we traveled through stations working our way toward the nativity and then journeying home by another way. If you were not able to attend these special events may the following reflections give you a glimpse into these active worship experiences.
Reflections on Advent Inspiration In a year of great loss, continuous disappointment, boundless uncertainty, and the grief that accompanies such darkness, we needed Advent 2020 more than ever. We needed to anticipate something—someone. We needed hope in the power of light to break through darkness. We needed whispers of peace to calm the noise. We needed the assurance that sadness will not completely defeat us. We needed to experience love in the simplest, most organic and beautiful expression of all — everlasting love that was birthed in a dark, dirty stable to an unsuspecting and undeserving world. God gave us exactly what we needed in SRBC’s Advent Inspiration. It was my family’s
first time back at church since my daddy died in August. We wandered through the carefully prepared stations for reflection. After being reminded of the darkness of the longest night, we weaved back and forth through the labyrinth with our one candle in hand. We descended through the fallen leaves crunching under our feet reminding us that death is a season of life, and then we reached the nativity. It was rustic and organic. I watched as my children interacted with the cutouts of the biblical characters we know so well. Kellyn, Garrett and Landry were not dressed up like the characters this year, retelling the story through the songs they learned in choir. This year, they were among the characters. They were in the rustic

Reflections on Inspired by Epiphany When we came home from Inspired by Epiphany, I helped set up one of Ms. Lou’s candles in the room where our gran sits. I lit the candle and told Gran about lighting a candle for our pawpaw and grandmama who passed away. Our pawpaw passed away last year during the time of epiphany. It was very special to share the epiphany candle with our gran and remember pawpaw with her. Epiphany reminds us that God’s light is always there for us. -Evie McNiel The Inspired Epiphany was another worshipful opportunity presented by our church staff during this pandemic. It was an inspiring interpretation of the journey taken to find the promised Messiah and the community that existed during that time, even the camels. Special thanks all those that made this project possible. -Elnor Melton

At the Advent Inspiration event, I had the opportunity to help with the Luminary station. I saw friends seeing each other for the first time in quite awhile - the smiles on faces, the gratitude in eyes, laughter in conversation. Little ones assembling their luminaries and then placing them with their moms, dads or siblings along the path leading to the manger. Each talking with the other about what they had just accomplished together. I am grateful to have witnessed these special moments among our church family. -Larry Decuir

When we were at Inspired by Epiphany, we lit candles at one of the stations to remember our grandmama on my dad’s side of the family and our pawpaw on my mom’s side of the family. Our gran has been sick this year with many trips to the hospital and a major surgery. She could not be at the epiphany event with us, but we took home candles we made at Ms. Lou’s table so that our gran could also share the epiphany light with us. -Mattie McNiel

Lent is a period of 40 days normally set aside for lament and reflection. After the year we have had, I’m guessing that most people have tired of lament and withdrawal. So instead of lament, this year we are going to take a special 40-day Lenten journey focused on joy. We will do so by using 40-days Joy Journals. These journals have been created to compliment Susan Spark’s Grace-Filled Gratitude 40-Day Joy Journals that the adults and youth will be using throughout Lent. Children’s journals will be available online via the children’s e-newsletter, church website, and our Families Facebook group on February 16th. If you cannot download a copy of the Children’s Joy Journal, contact me to get your children a hard copy. The Susan Sparks book is available to anyone upon request. Please email or call me, and I will have one delivered. - Becky CS
