We seek to proclaim the Good News of Christ in all that we say and do.

CHRIS G E ORGE - Senior Pastor
As your pastor, I am pleased to share with you some exciting and meaningful worship opportunities in the month of October. Since the beginning of the Covid crisis, we have been unable to experience in-person worship together in the Sanctuary. However, due to the decline in new Covid cases, we are preparing to take the next step. Using the same model as our Vesper services, we will be inviting Sunday school classes to attend in-person worship in the sanctuary. Each class will be assigned two Sundays in October and November. On these Sundays, the invited class(es) will be encouraged to meet together with masks for Sunday school in space that will be assigned with socially distanced seating. Following Sunday school, the class(es) will be invited to attend the worship service in the sanctuary. While we are excited about extending this invitation, we want to recognize and affirm the decision of any members who due to age, medical vulnerabilities, or even out of personal caution feel uncomfortable attending. We will continue to livestream each service using Boxcast, Facebook, and our church’s website. I know that some in our congregation are eager to move forward more quickly, while others in our congregation may feel that we are already walking too fast. As your pastor, I want to assure you that with the help and input of our Risk Management Committee and our Church Administrative Council, we are working to balance our desire to be together with our commitment to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our congregation. We are excited about this next step forward and hopeful that we will continue to move toward a time when we can all worship together in this sacred space. I ask for your prayers for the church ministers and staff members, our church deacons, and our church leaders who have been a part of this decision-making process. I also want to ask for your prayers for our congregation as we continue to travel through these uncharted waters, confident of God’s guidance in this season and beyond. I am grateful for the deep sense of community and connectedness that exists within our congregation and for the calls being made, the cards being sent, the care being extended, and the prayers beinglifted during this time. During the first months of the Covid crisis, after so many hours in our home, my family and I began to take day trips to some of Georgia’s state parks. Each trip, inevitably from the back seat, a question arose: “How long until we get there?” And, often, I could honestly reply, “I don’t know. We have never been there before.” Some of us are asking the same question: “How long before we get there?” Friends, we don’t know, because we have never been here before. We have a choice, not about how soon we will get there, but about how we will travel on this journey. My hope and prayer is that we will make the most of this time. We will be courageous and cautious, enthusiastic and wise. We will learn to treasure the little things and to celebrate each step forward, ultimately knowing that “God, who began a good work in us, will be faithful to complete it until the Day of Christ Jesus.” The journey is long, but I am thankful to be traveling with you. Pastor Chris

CONNEC T I N G AT SMOK E R I SE Creating Space For almost 50 years, the Weekday School has sought to follow in the footsteps of Jesus by caring for children. This care has meant decades of welcoming families into our building and partnering with them as we instill foundational lessons like numbers and letters. This year, as with all things, ministry means flexibility. Ministry means temperature checks, sprays, wipes and gallons of hand sanitizer. It also means partnering even more with our families and offering at-home learning. At-home learning means that our teachers learn how to use Zoom, record videos, and care for families with whom they connot share a room. It means that families are learning at home together. In all of this, we are cultivating sacred space. The rooms in this building have long been sacred. The juxtaposition of the sound of children's laughter in our chapel with the solemnity of remembrance speaks of the holiness we cherish. Now, we are creating sacred space at home - space for learning, worshipping and growing. Our ministry continues with flexibility throughout this year. We will serve our community with the resources we have and create new resources for new situations. This is our calling, and we are honored to be a part of the lives of so many.

Every Monday at 7:00 pm Beginning October 19th Be sure to purchase your book prior to the first session. Robert Jones in White Too Long has exposed religious hypocrisy and white supremacy in the core of Southern Baptists and beyond. As I read this book I concluded, "Jones is describing my experience growing up in the south." The book explodes the myth of white supremacy and how it was vaulted by our religious and civic institutions. It is the most serious indictment of white religion I have read. -Page Fulgham 8 | SMOKE RIS E BAPT IST.ORG

JA ME S S MIT H - Pasto r al Car e Asso ciate
Troubled for the Right Reasons When I was a teenager, our church youth choir sang a song entitled, "Trouble Me, Lord.” The prayer song was a petition for God to trouble our hearts and direct our attention so that we might be more mindful about temptations as well as conditions in the lives of others and in the world around us. Lyrics included the phrase, “Trouble me, and let not Your trouble cease, until I find in You my peace.” Today a favorite hymn calls us “to let our hearts be broken.” The true call and response to missions engagement today somehow requires a broken heart and/or a troubled spirit that direct our attention and our hands and feet to what Christ would have us see and know and do. Acts 17 reveals a time the Apostle Paul was troubled for the right reasons. In his missionary journeys, Paul followed a general pattern of engagement with others. When entering a city he would go first to the local Jewish synagogue. While there, he explained from scripture about Jesus, the Messiah. Some Jews and Gentiles came to faith in Christ. Others opposed Paul and stirred up crowds against him when he tried to teach in the marketplace. In Athens Paul went to the synagogue, the marketplace and then to the Areopagus where philosophers debated. Paul had been “troubled for the right reasons” when he saw so many idols in Athens. In fact, the account in Acts indicates Paul was “greatly distressed to see the city full of idols.” At the Areopagus, Paul took the opportunity to draw attention to the “unknown God” mentioned on an altar nearby. He wanted to tell everyone about the true God whom they all needed to know. When was the last time your heart was troubled in this way? Today’s mission causes call us to develop our own patterns of engagement. The call to Christ requires a heart that can be broken and even distressed by the world—in order to be in tune with God’s love for the world. Smoke Rise Baptist Church mission partners enable us to respond in countless ways to our world. When troubled for the right reasons, hearts are broken for the right reasons. With hearts broken by seeing hunger, poverty, injustice, struggling and homeless families and other great needs, Christians have a World of Hope to bring to those around us. May Smoke Rise Baptist Church have our hearts touched once again by renewed commitment to those in need. May we give generously to the Global Missions Offering andmay we be moved to pray with renewed passion for God’s love to be poured out on our world.

A Legacy of Giving through Smoke Rise Endowment For the past three years, the trustees of the Smoke Rise Baptist Endowment Fund have hosted an annual luncheon on All Saints Sunday of the Legacy Society. At this luncheon, Legacy Society members, new church members, and others who want to learn more about ways to give to the Endowment join in gratitude to honor gifts of members past and celebrate the ways that the Endowment is sustaining and expanding the reach of our church. Many years ago, church members planted seeds of giving in a “forever fund” known as the Smoke Rise Endowment. The fund consists of gifts and bequests of members past and present. Although we will not host a Legacy Luncheon this year due to restrictions of COVID-19, we should not let the day pass without expressing our gratitude. As we consider the saints who have gone before, the Legacy Society challenges each of us to explore ways we can contribute to the Endowment as a “forever fund” that will sustain and expand the ministry and mission of Smoke Rise above and beyond its budgetary limits. The Endowment offers every member the opportunity to partner in God’s gracious future. When we make an endowment gift to the church, it declares to present and future generations the importance of faithful stewardship and trust in God’s vision for our world. Through the Endowment, we build on the gifts of those who planted the first seeds of worship, ministry and mission at Smoke Rise. Through active legacy society members, we continue to pass the torch of faith to brothers and sisters in Christ who will carry the work of Smoke Rise into a hopeful future. We are grateful for those who gave generously before us as we continue to accept the challenge of growing our Endowment. As of our last financial report dated August 31, 2020, our Endowment including principal and earnings totaled $1,549,554.25. The trustees accept all general gifts to the Endowment through the Wellspring Fund. The Wellspring Fund has the broadest reach in the Endowment by which to support building and other capital needs, as well as new ministry and mission endeavors. The Endowment also includes funds for building/ grounds, music, missions, children and youth. Gifts and bequests of all kinds and amounts are welcomed by the trustees. The Endowment accept gifts from bequests in wills, trusts, life insurance policies, retirement accounts, real estate transfers (subject to approval), stock transfers, gifts in memory, gifts in honor. Please prayerfully consider how you might join our Legacy Society by pledging your support towards our Endowment. If you have any questions about giving to the Endowment, the church office can arrange for you to meet with one of our pastors or an Endowment trustee to answer any questions.

YOU TH AT S M O KE R I SE
J E R E M Y C OLLI V ER - Minister of Youth, Missions and Communications
Action “Lights! Camera! Action!” You normally think about these words being said by a director before a scene from a movie or television show is recorded; but we don’t live in normal times. In this new normal, “lights” has meant having the correct lighting set up for your Zoom call; “camera” has meant making sure your camera is turned on for your Zoom call; and well, “action” there hasn’t been a lot of action. Being sheltered in place left a lot of time to be together with family, doing a deep clean on your home, cleaning up the yard, bingeing television series on Netflix and Hulu. Our first responders have been active. We have cheered them on from our balconies; we have made signs to place in front of hospitals and doctors' offices, and delivered meals to show our appreciation. But, the majority of us haven’t been able to get out and take action. I have heard this from our students: they want to take action in our world. They want to be the cause of transformation in our community. Be ready to hear their stories of how they are transforming their communities. Our first story will be brought as a group. November 14th and 15th, our youth will be participating in a Community Action Weekend culminating with a drive-by food collection after church on the 15th. You will hear more about it in the weeks to come; but be ready to fill those carts up and bring your food by. Our students want to feed our community both spiritually and physically.
This month, we are beginning our senior spotlight. First up is Kathryn Taylor... Hi! My name is Kathryn, and I am a current senior at Marist School. You may recognize me around the church from my smile! Currently at Marist, I write and am the sports editor for the Blue and Gold, which is Georgia’s oldest high school newspaper. Recently, I joined the Emmaus Board, which is a committee made of five seniors who lead religious events, such as services or retreats. In my free time outside school, I enjoy working at Chick-fil-A, doodling in my bullet journal, and listening to music! After high school, I hope to attend the University of Georgia where I would like to get my undergraduate degree in mathematics and my master’s in education as well as minoring in Spanish so that I can teach math in two languages! My favorite memory from my time in the youth group would have to be my first Passport with the youth. While Passport is always a fun camp, Smoke Rise’s Youth Group made the week what it truly was. From the nightly devotionals to the traditional Walmart trip, Passport brought the youth group together and helped me bond with the other high schoolers. My favorite Bible passage is the one which records Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane because I truly see the human in Jesus. I know that Jesus also struggled with following the plan that God had for him. Knowing that I am not alone in that struggle was profound to me.
