FRO M TH E PASTO R CH RIS G E ORGE - PASTOR
Before you read the rest of this letter, I want to encourage you to get out your calendar and prepare to mark lots of important dates. October is a month filled with wonderful activities and opportunities at Smoke Rise Baptist Church. World Communion Sunday, October 1—Christians from around the world join together in the celebration of World Communion Sunday; remembering the Christ that unites us is bigger than any denominations or differences that may divide us. This year, Danny Vancil and the Sanctuary Choir will be leading us in worship, and I will be preaching, then we will gather together around God’s table. Missions Sunday, October 15—Missions lies at the heart of our congregational identity. As Christians, we are called by God to be on mission in our world, sharing love and grace with others. This year, we are excited to welcome our good friend and ministry partner the Rev. John Morris, Executive Director of God’s Appalachian Partnership, to lead us in worship. This will be a wonderful Sunday to celebrate what God has done and to dream together of what God is calling us to do. Octoberfest on Wednesday, October 25—Octoberfest is first and foremost an outreach to our congregation and community. We extend invitation to young and old to enjoy good food, good fellowship, and great fun. Let me encourage you not only to come, but also to become a Minister of Hospitality extending gracious welcome to all you encounter. Please take the time to invite someone. Actually, invite everyone. All Saints Day on Sunday, November 5—On this special Sunday, we remember those who have passed from this world into God’s presence. We give thanks to God for this great cloud of witnesses, friends and family, mothers and fathers, husbands and wives. This year, I am extremely excited to announce that our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Dr. J. Truett Gannon will be preaching for our All Saints Celebration. October is going to be an amazing month. Consider this a personal invitation from your Pastor. Don’t miss a moment. God’s peace, Pastor Chris

GROW IN G AT S M O KE R I SE THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION THEN AND NOW On October 17, 1517, the German monk Martin Luther nailed Ninety-five Theses to JOURNEYS - FALL SESSION 2 the church door in Wittenberg. He meant them to spark a discussion in his university about God’s ways with humanity. Instead they sparked a firestorm of protest which eventually changed the face of European and American history and of the Christian faith forever. During this 500th anniversary year of this watershed event, Dr. Loyd Allen, Professor of Church History at Mercer University, will give three presentations on the Protestant Reformation: why it happened, what happened, and why it matters today. Lynne and Graham Felton hosted the group of 25 in their home for the initial meeting on August 27th and again on September 24th. The August meeting provided a great time of fellowship and discussion which included the concept of Sabbath, how its observance has evolved over the generations, and how its meaning is relevant to modern lifestyles. Those in attendance offered significant and helpful insights and fresh applications of how Sabbath can be incorporated creatively into a busy schedule. The next Connections gathering is October 22nd. Light snacks and drinks provided. Childcare is provided at the church. Parents can drop off children at the preschool area at 5:30 pm and then proceed to the Felton’s home. Please RSVP for children by the previous Wednesday through the church office (770) 469-5856; mbrock@ smokerisebaptist.org. For more information contact Chris Raffield craffield@hotmail.com.

CON N EC T I N G AT SMOK E R I SE IDEAS & ACTIONS TO PLAINS, GEORGIA In August the Ideas & Actions Young Adult Sunday School group traveled to Plains, Georgia to attend Maranatha Baptist Church. At Maranatha the group attended Sunday School led by President Jimmy Carter and heard Brandon Patterson, Pastor at Plains and McAfee student, preach during worship. During the Sunday School hour, President Carter shared many insights into living out one’s faith and standing firm in the “unchanging principles” of Jesus. Following Sunday School, the group was able to worship alongside President Carter and hear a personal and powerful message of hope from Brandon. The group was President Carter teaching encouraged by words of faith from Sunday School President Carter and from their peer who is just beginning to live out his call to pastoral ministry. Brandon attended Smoke Rise this past Spring, as he was completing his contextual ministry placement hours at McAfee under supervision of Rev. Bart McNiel. On the heels of completing his time at Smoke Rise, Brandon was called as Pastor at Maranatha. Brandon is a talented preacher who cares deeply for his new congregation at Maranatha.
The Ideas & Actions group was excited to be able to support Brandon as a former member of their class in his new place of service. If you have never made a trip to Plains to meet and worship with President Carter, be sure to check out the online schedule for the church (http://www. mbcplains.org) and to let Brandon know you are from Smoke Rise Baptist Church when you visit. CAR IN G AT S M O KE R I SE RE S P OND I N G TO M EN TAL ILLN ES S IN C H R I ST I A N LOV E On Wednesday September 27, Associate Pastor Bart McNiel and Church Member Kelly McLendon presented a program about how our church family can better care for and respond to people living with mental illness. Below are some highlights from the presentation to be aware of as our church family seeks to include and better care for our brothers and sisters in Christ who suffer from mental illness. OVERCOMING COMMON MYTHS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS Mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weaknesses, character flaws, poor upbringings, or spiritual weakness. Mental illness is a treatable medical condition from which people can recover with the help of therapy, medication, and the caring support of others. People who have mental illnesses are no more likely to act in violence against others than any other people. Only a small percentage of people with mental illness act in violence against others. In truth, people with mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence themselves than to actually harm other people. Whether we recognize it or not, we probably know more than one person with a serious mental illness who is a vibrant member of society, actively engaged with others, and living a fulfilling and productive life. Help and recovery for people with mental illness is more readily available today than ever before.
abandoned me? I have cried desperately for help, but still it does not come. During the day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer; I call at night, but get no rest.” Psalm 22:10-11. When we educate ourselves and learn to recognize the false myths that hang over people suffering from mental illness, we can learn to care and support people with mental illness in our churches, and celebrate with them on the day when they can say, “I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me.” Jonah 2:2. RENEWING CHRISTIAN RESPONSE When we educate ourselves and embrace the “truth” about mental illness, we are “set free” to provide loving Christian care and support to people living with mental illness. If you are a person in our Smoke Rise family living with a mental illness or caring for someone who suffers from mental illness, we are encouraged to step out of the shadows and seek out others in our family of faith who can provide loving care and support. Scripture instructs us to “bear each other’s burdens in love.” If you are affected by mental illness and would like to connect with others with similar concerns in our church family, do not hesitate to contact our Associate Pastor for more information as we seek to step out of the shadows and into the light of caring support for one another.
God loves and cares for people with mental illness. The Bible includes honest and expressive descriptions of suffering and longing that reflect the feelings and experience of people who suffer from serious depression or a related mental illness: “My God, My God, why have you 8 | SMOKE RIS E BAPT IST.ORG

GEN ER OS I T Y CELEBRATING AN ENDOWMENT MILESTONE
The Legacy Society
The Trustee Board of the Smoke Rise Baptist Endowment is pleased to announce that our Endowment Fund is approaching a milestone of $1 million dollars, and is anticipated to exceed this amount by the beginning of November when the Trustees will host our First Annual Legacy Society Luncheon on All Saints Day, Sunday, November 5 at 12:15pm following worship. If you have made a lifetime gift to the Endowment or have included the Endowment as a beneficiary to your will, trust, life-insurance policy, or in some other way, the Trustees invite you to celebrate with us this year at the luncheon. If you have already made a gift to the Endowment or included the Endowment as a beneficiary in some way, no matter how big or small, we want to know who you are and include you in the Legacy Society.
Because this year will be our first Legacy Society Luncheon, the Trustees are inviting anyone who wants to learn more about the Endowment to join us for lunch. Those who join in the Legacy Society by December 31, 2018 will be considered charter members of the Legacy Society. If you already qualify, please let us know by contacting our church office to leave a message for a Trustee to contact you or by contacting one of our Pastors.
Through our Legacy Society, we hope to grow a culture of commitment that bears witness to the importance of our Endowment to the longevity of our church, as a testimony to others who join us on mission, and as a living legacy and gift of love for generations to come.
Please RSVP to attend the luncheon by contacting our church office during regular hours by Tuesday, October 24. We look forward to seeing you on November 5 at our First Annual Luncheon, as we celebrate new milestones and learn more about how the Endowment will secure and sustain the ministries of our church into the indefinite future.

Smoke Rise Family, October 15 is Mission Sunday. Missions is part of our DNA at Smoke Rise. This year we will focus our attention on one of our long-time mission partners, GAP: God’s Appalachia Partnership. John Morris, the Executive Director, will be preaching. The day will begin with a biscuit breakfast in fellowship hall at 8:45am. While you enjoy your breakfast, you will be able to visit displays from our mission partners and meet some of our missionaries. Mission Sunday also begins our pledge period for our fourth annual mission offering. This year’s goal is $40,000. The pledge period will end on March 31, 2018. You will soon receive a pledge card in the mail. Please bring it with you on Mission Sunday when we will all make our pledges together. This year a significant portion of the mission offering will go to the GAP ministry. The ministry currently rents space from an abandoned coal mine. Several months ago, without notice, the mine owner insignificantly increased their rent. They will not be able to afford another increase. In 2011 Smoke Rise, through the Hope Offering, allowed GAP to purchase land to provide a permanent home for the ministry. The time is now to help them develop this property before another rent increase. Up to $25,000 of this year’s mission offering will go to prepare the site for immediate development with trailers to allow the continued operation of the ministry as they seek to raise funds for permanent structures. GAP is an essential ministry to the people of Appalachia and is in danger of having to close its doors. Won’t you help them take one step closer to having a permanent home? FAMILY M I N I ST RY AT SMOK E R I SE An Open Letter to Ms. Kristen,
and better prepared young minister who is ready to care for your new congregants. We know that you will love them, pray for them, laugh with them, care for them, and, most of all, teach them about Jesus because you did it here with us.
For the last two years you have taught us. You have cared for us. You have cheered us on at our swim meets, baseball, soccer, softball, basketball games, recitals, and plays. Let’s be honest: you have been to more youth events in the last two years than most people experience in a lifetime. Thank you for listening to our fears and soothing our wounds. Thank you for showing us how to love the world exactly as you find it. Thank you for encouraging us and making us smile like only you can do.
As your Smoke Rise Family, we promise to pray for you. We promise to pray for FBC Rome. And we promise to continue to love God and our neighbor as you have taught us to do throughout your ministry here.
Kristen, go with our love, go with our prayers, go with our pride and confidence in you, go with God’s richest blessing on your life and calling to serve God’s world. With love, The Families of Smoke Class 4-4'sRise Motivational Poster Baptist Church

These photos depict unexpected corrosion and hidden damage to the steel framework that supports our Steeple. As a result of the additional hidden damage to the structure supporting our Steeple, the expense of repair is more than initially estimated. Through our continued payment of pledges and support of the Refresh effort, our Steeple will be repaired and secure for many years to come.
