Club News I have been receiving updates on the new club being built in Palm Beach County. The plans are on pages 12-14. You can also access the plans online at: http://www.myfwc.com/ media/2836782/ pbcrangeconcept.pdf. These are old plans but are essentially the same as the ones presented here. You may notice there will be five international skeet and trap fields, four combination American skeet and trap, two trap only fields, a five-stand, sporting clays course and a pistol and rifle range. Quite impressive! The NFL Alumni shoot is the 19th and the Bud Wolfe is on the 27th. I will probably pull for the Alumni shoot. We may need more pullers so let us know if you are interested in volunteering.

ers. Rodrigo Mehich lead by an astounding 13 targets over Richard Kilpatrick’s 83. The Trap shoot was cut short by lightning. Alex Riera lead the field by one target with a 95 over Peter Mills 94. The Skeet shoot was attended by eight shooters. Bruce Gordon and Asif Sheerahamed led the HOA with 170. Robert Vasquez led the 12 ga with a 49 and also won the .410. Asif lead the 20 ga and doubles while Phil Keagy won the 28 ga event. As you all probably know Guy Roper passed away recently. Our sympathies go out to his family. I hope you could attend his services. I hope you all had a good start to the holiday season over Thanksgiving. I look forward to seeing everyone during December either at a skeet, trap, or sporting clay event. Happy Holidays to all of us!

Magazine Review Skeet Shooting REVIEW – November 2015 Starting your swing too close to the target line of flight is a problem in every shotgunning disciple. Todd Bender reminds us this month how fatal this is in skeet shooting. Don’t let your hold point be higher than the bottom of the high house window is his first salvo. A lower hold point allows for better visual pickup of the target and allows for targets below the usual line of flight. Interestingly he is channeling Gil and Vicki in the article when he mentions how you will have to look across the barrels with your non-shooting eye on low incoming targets on 1, 2, and 3. Hold at the bottom of the low house window to defeat this problem. Holding at the bottom of the window or below the line of flight is not advised when dealing with low 5 and 6. For these targets Todd suggests holding at the top of the window. Any higher than the top of the window will affect visual acquisition of the target. This is all part of the pre-shot routine. Step onto the station, set your stance, do whatever it is that you do to prepare for the call, then mount into your hold point which should be at the same level as the top or bottom of the window depending on the post.

ma tells us this month. The visceral component involves the visceral mechanics of the physical fundamentals: stance, focal point, hold point, mount, etc. With experience and good coaching the response to the flash of the target becomes a visceral response John calls the Shooting Reflex. After mastering the Shooting Reflex the shooter becomes more concerned with mastering the visual mechanics of shooting. Settling the eye into the focal point with soft focus consistently is harder than most people want to admit. Once you master the concentration this requires you have made a major step forward as a shooter. Mental mechanics are the final step. Here is where you have to balance the need to concentrate on the process with the need to eliminate self-talk. John advocates the dispassionate state where you disengage expectation, intention, and judgement. Let the process happen and simply manage with a light hand rather than an iron fist. John believes your best results can be achieved once you learn to still your mind before settling into the hold and focal points. He also believes that for the average shooter this is harder than they want to believe.

The game of skeet is 100% mechanics consisting of three components: visceral, visual, and mental. At least that’s what John Shi5

Magazine Review Sporting Clays – December 2015 Gil and Vicki Ash examine a problem in sporting clays that’s contrary to everything we know to be true in trapshooting. In trap a right-handed shooter typically finds the leftangle target off Post 1 to be easier to break than a right-angle off of Post 5. Just so we are all on the same page, a right-angle in trap is a left to right crossing target in sporting, a leftangle is a right to left crossing target. The difficulties with the right-angle target can be explained by the tendency right-handed trapshooters have when they swing to the right. They pull the gun away from their face as they swing in this direction. The gun moves in concert with the face when they swing to the left. This has always been the age-old explanation for the difference in the two targets. Doesn’t mean it’s perfectly correct but it was the explanation I heard too many times. I never believed it. Gil and Vicki come up with a more cogent explanation but they think the left-angle is the difficult target and the right-angle is the easy one. Why the difference of opinion on the left -angle and right-angle? Very simple, they use Sustained-lead, trapshooters use Swingthrough. With Sustained-lead the shooter inserts the barrel in front of the target meaning the non-shooting eye has to look across and over the barrels to look back at the target when it is a left-angle. This doesn’t happen when shooting Swing-through. Coming from behind a left-angle target using Swing-through means the non-shooting eye picks up the target clearly without having to look across the barrels. If you go after the right-angle with Swing-

through you do have this problem. Now the non-shooting eye has to look across the barrels to see the target. Using Sustained-lead you insert in front of the target and neither eye runs into any interference from the barrels. They both have an unobstructed view of the target. So what does this all mean? If you have problems with either a right or left-angle target in sporting clays I recommend switching your swing method. For sporting clays try Swingthrough on right to left crossing targets and use Sustained-lead on left to right crossing targets. In trap we have no option. We have to use Swing-through to get in front of angle targets. Personally, I think most right-handed shooters have problems with right-angles because they approach too closely on the targetline. If you swing to the right-angle from underneath, under the target-line, the target is seen more clearly and you won’t pull the trigger too early and you won’t end up over the target. Our shotguns are set up to shoot with a POI of 60/40 or higher so being under the target isn’t a bad thing. Over the last six months Tom Roster has become the Bill Nye of the shooting world. His scientific approach to shotshell ballistics can be seen in a number of magazines every month.

ples. See the target, recognize its speed, and pull-ahead to the correct lead is Jon’s advice. We always receive great grounding in the basics and fundamentals from Marty Fischer and this month is no exception. He gives a very succinct description of how the mount is a “push to the visual focal point with the front or forearm hand and a lift to the Bill McGuire at the 2015 English Worlds face with the trigger hand.” This month as in many of his recent articles Take some video of yourself and see if you he cautions against the reliance on speed to aren’t pulling the gun back into your shoulder break targets. Within 35 yards you will not see to finish your mount. If you are maybe you a significant difference between an 1145 and a should go to a shrug mount where the gun is 1300 fps load. Over 35 yards the extra velocialready seated to your shoulder then all you ty may help some shooters. There is a real efdo is raise the comb to your face to finish the fect on leads when shooting the ultra-fast vemount. locity loads (1,400-1,700 fps) versus a 1,200 I like his advice to always insert or start your fps load regardless of distance. He does adgun in the same place relative to the target mit there is a psychological factor involved for every time you begin your swing. Visually this some shooters. If 1300 fps is what they bekind of consistency is vital to good scores. lieve in then 1300 fps is what they should Read your target both vertically and horizonshoot! tally. I carry a small straight edge with me to Greg Moats took a lesson from Jon Kruger this month and came away with some interesting ideas or at least ones different from the usual doctrine. Jon shoots and teaches a Pullahead style of shooting. His hold point is usually half way back to the trap and his break point is close to his break point. He lets the target come to him, matches speed, then pulls and looks ahead to his lead. Jon is not a great believer and neither am I in the hard focus on the target where you actually count the dim-

help determine how the bird is flying. A shell box edge also works. A good read allows you to correctly match speed with the target. Finally, watch the shooters in front of you and mark your second target so you know exactly where to look for it after breaking the first one.

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – December 2015 Like Tom Roster, L.P. Brezny provides some much needed and welcome science to the shooting sports. L.P. tested the new Winchester AA steel shot sporting clay loads and found them to be exceptionally good ammunition. Inside of 40 yards he could not find any significant differences between them and equivalent lead loads. In fact the steel shot performance was superior to the lead. It was the patterning that truly seemed to make them superior. Without the usual flat surfaces caused by compression doesn’t occur with steel leaving the pellets to travel in a more uniform and compact pattern. As to the use of steel shot and possible long term damage to your barrel, Mr. Brezny believes it is over-hyped and probably more urban legend than fact.

Michael J. Keyes, M.D. In the shooting world where the exception is the shooter who has been actively shooting his whole life, planning is a significant tool you can use to become more successful. The first step of planning is to have a goal. Simply wanting to improve is all you really need. Now, how are you going to create a plan to achieve this? It doesn’t take much. The plan actually is part of the improvement process. It highlights areas to concentrate on, allows the creation of deadlines, puts things in perspective, helps you to organize, in some respects it takes the place of your mom when you were back in high school! The first step in planning is to write out a plan. Get the first step done and let the planning process take care of the rest.

There is an extensive and well documented article on the evolution of the skeet gun by John Bulger in this month’s issue. If you are interested in the history of skeet this is a wonderful read. Planning is the topic this month for 8
