Club News March brought with it great things for our club and also great tragedy. I am sorry to inform everyone of the sudden passing of Al (Joe) Potter. He passed quite suddenly during the Florida State Shoot. I spoke with Frank Marshall his uncle the day after his sudden illness. Joe was one of those great guys everyone enjoyed shooting with. I posted his picture on page 25. Rest in Peace friend! In case you didn’t notice Federico Ramirez won the Florida State Singles title. Congrats also go out to Marilyn Lehrfeld, Victoria Argenti, Andrew Loitz, Steve Norris, Mike Cieslik, and Ruthie Flayderman who all won trophies at the state shoot and Southern Grand. We are all proud of you!

Luke Ford lead 12 ga/ with a 47, Stan Gorgacz led the 20 gauge with a 47, 28 gauge with a 48, and the .410 with a 41. Stan also led the HOA. Rodrigo Mehich led the sporting clays field by two birds with a 94 over Gary Gray. There was a nice turnout of 42 shooters. Thanks as always goes out to Steve Haynie and his crew. Florida State Skeet Championships are 14-17th in Palatka and the Sporting Clays Championships are the 2nd-3rd. Good Luck to all of our friends attending these shoots. We have a meeting Thursday, April 7th at 7:00. Please try to attend. See you at the Club!

The last trapshoot saw Federico winning the Singles with a 98 and Doubles with a 93. The skeet shoots have been heating up with 15 shooters attending. 4

Magazine Review Shotgun Sports – April 2016 Michael J. Keyes, M.D. loves to spend inordinate column space to explaining the how and why of the mental process. Not that this is bad, it just means you have to plow through it to get to the point of the article. This month he discusses dealing with match pressure and brings up two good suggestions we can use to improve our mental game. Videotaping your practices and your competitions is much easier in the new millennium with all the great technology we have. Michael suggests taking advantage of this and doing exactly that, have video taken of your practices and competitions. Compare your attitude and stance in the manner Lanny Bassham would propose. Do you appear confident in practice but not in the competition? Subtle changes in behavior and posture could signal a lack of confidence. The good doctor suggests you “fake” your confidence by changing your posture and your approach to shooting during the early events. This may get you past your confidence issues early on and may help you gain real confidence as the competition progresses. Recording your feelings in your shooting journal will also help evaluate problems in your mental game. Trying to remember what went wrong days or weeks later isn’t the right approach. Write in your journal as soon as something significant occurs. Recording it allows you to go back later to evaluate the root causes so you can formulate a plan to circumvent or correct what went wrong. Match stress can be dealt with if approached correctly. You just have to be able to recognize what the problem is and the degree of its influence over your shooting!

TRAP & FIELD - March 2016 I talk about concentrating on the process quite often as where we should be when we are shooting. My definition of process is similar to the one expressed by Lee Couilliard and Timothy Gallwey in tennis. They came up with the concept of eliminating all thoughts of outcome and process from the swing on a tennis ball by simply concentrating on the ball and saying to yourself, bounce when the ball bounces on the court and hit when it comes time to make contact with the ball. Bounce, Hit! That’s the process, not a long involved internal discussion during each shot as to how and where the racket should be brought back behind you then how hard and when to bring the racket forward to strike the ball. This also eliminates thoughts about what to do with your wrist, feet, and shoulders. Eliminate everything except the essentials, bounce, hit! The same is true in shooting. Bob Palmer presents us with the fallacy of following a very complicated process versus one simplified to the bounce, hit of shooting. What is the bounce, hit of shooting? Truly only you can decide that for yourself. For me it’s concentration on soft focus where the target will appear, then release to the shot. Look for the target then let the subconscious take over. That’s how it should work, doesn’t mean flinching and a myriad of other things don’t interfere but that’s how it should work. Even Bob agrees.

Magazine Review CLAYTARGET NATION – March 2016 I felt the first edition of this magazine was a winner. Some disagreed with me, still I thought the first month was exceptional. This month however was a different matter. If anyone can explain the usefulness of Gary Walstrom’s article please enlighten me. This second edition is more focused on the newer shooter and is less interesting for me, personally. On reflection it does address those shooters rather well, so kudos again to the magazine’s staff. When you set your eyes on your focal point do you move them away from the barrel? In trap some of us hold a high gun and look under the barrels for the target’s appearance. Others look over the barrels cutting their eyes away from the gun’s hold point back to a separate focal point. In skeet for outgoing targets we move our eyes off the barrels and look back towards the house. In none of these instances do we turn our head towards the focal point. In sporting clays when we look into our focal point many of us are turning our heads to do so. Since we are shooting low gun this has been the established norm. Don Currie suggests keeping our head movement to a minimum when we do this, preferring to cut our eyes back to the focal point as much as possible. I think on short window targets he is probably correct. On long window targets I think moving your head with the target is the more appropriate strategy. Should you copy the style of a good shooter? Not without understanding how it affects technique is Todd Bender’s caution this month. If you are going to emulate a shooter’s style you need to understand how it affects the fundamental moves required in your game. Doesn’t matter if it is trap, skeet, or sporting, copying someone else’s style shouldn’t be done lightly. Observe

them on a fundamental level and mind whether they are still maintaining good form and technique. My organization had us take a People Mapping seminar one year. Very interesting day to say the least. Turns out I am what’s known as a Lone Wolf. Funny thing, all of my department had the same dominant personality type, quite an unusual situation from the People Mapping personnel’s experience. It is rare for so many of this personality type to be working together. May explain why we got along so well. Anyway, Gary Walstrom presents us with several personality types people are supposed to fit into. I disagree with his blanket assertions but more importantly his article doesn’t give any good advice on what to do if you fit into one of his categories. Taking his categorical mapping into consideration, I am a non-assertive person who should be a good team player, I am not. By free admission I am an extroverted introvert, I have little patience yet I am very methodical and am very laid back, traits I am not supposed to have. I also eschews a fast-pace, deadline driven environment which is what people of little patience are supposed to enjoy. If you are confused imagine how Gary would feel if he ever met me.

into your soft focus. I like how John says this turns off the ego “and replaces thinking with trusting”. Trust your shooting, turn off the self-talk and shoot. Your enjoyment should increase exponentially.

ZACH KIENBAUM 2015 WORLD ENGLISH

We have another article on self-talk this month but this one is from John Shima. John informs us that instructional self-talk is useful when learning a new task and motivational self-talk is good for us when we are performing well-learned tasks such as shooting in a tournament. Creating an internal dialogue of therapeutically positive selftalk is one of the greatest mental skills you can develop. Controlling your internal dialogue, keeping it positive, and process driven allows you to hone in on the “bounce, hit” of shooting. Soft focus at the focal point turns off the dialogue, allowing the subconscious to take control of your shooting like it should.

I have never suffered from recoil issues. I hope it stays that way. Tom Roster suggests the usual to reduce recoil, heavier guns, less shot, semi-autos, and reduced powder. He actually makes the statement that a 200 lb. shooter cannot take the recoil of a 100 bird event without feeling the effects of recoil and subsequently seeing their performance decline. Has this guy ever been to a trap or skeet shoot? We shoot up to 300 targets in a day. This article has a great deal of good info but his opinion on the amount of recoil someone can handle is all wrong. There are three good articles for the new shooter in this edition. One is on adjustable combs and gun fit, one is on shooting on a limited budget, and the final is on FITASC. All are good for beginning shooters. If you know of a beginning shooter who needs some insight in these areas get them a copy of this month’s issue.

In that moment where you turn off the self-talk and fall into your soft focus you suspend all emotional attachment to the shooting process. John call this allowing the “true self ” to take control. Keep the self-talk to motivational ideas once you step onto your post or station then use a key phrase or word to switch everything off and fall 7

Magazine Review TrapShootingUSA – MarchApril 2016 Larry Grenevicki is becoming an expert on the history of the gunpowder industry in the United States. He again provides and interesting glimpse into the history of our sport through his continued series on gunpowder collectibles. Thanks, Larry! What do you say to yourself while you are shooting? What should you say? Lanny Bassham outlines three times when you should be concerned about what you are saying to yourself when you go shooting. First, before you go to the line you should give yourself a pep talk imagining yourself as cool, calm, and confident. Rehearse how you will handle your emotions, mental energy, and attitude during the day. Practice and rehearsal increases the likelihood you will actually implement your mental controls during the shoot. End with a thorough mental imagining of how you will execute your

shooting for the day. Make it as detailed as possible. Keep it process based, don’t imagine standing on the podium. The caution on imagining outcomes increases your chances of over-trying. During the competition keep your internal dialogue to a minimum. If you miss let it go and don’t dwell on it in a prolonged internal dialogue. Stick with the process. Finally, after the shoot is over write down what was good about your shooting and review it in your mind. Also review what went wrong and write out a plan to fix it.
