Hope for Horses
W
ith a jurisdiction covering all of Western North Carolina (and sometimes over state lines), the nonprofit Hope for Horses has helped (directly or indirectly) some 750 equines since it formed in 1999. “I would say anything within a couple hours, we’ll go out to a property and see what we can do to help the horse in need,” said Gina Zachary-Doan, executive director of Hope for Horses. “We’ll get a call or a tip about a malnourished or neglected horse. First, we’ll try to get law enforcement and animal control involved. But, if it’s urgent, we can be there right off the bat.” Created by Whitney Wright, Hope for Horses came to fruition as a grassroots organization. The simple spark of an idea (more so, personal mission) to help horses in need has set ablaze an ever-growing group of professionals and community members aimed at protecting these incredible animals. With its headquarters in Waynesville, Hope for Horses has its main farm in Leicester, a sanctuary retirement in Weaverville, and a training farm in Barnardsville. It’s truly a group effort of farm managers, coordinators, and volunteers, all coming together to give an animal another lease on life — a safe haven for a happy and healthy existence. “It’s incredible the amount of resources and support we’ve been able to gather from our mountain communities,” Zachary-Doan said. “Not to mention all of the great partnerships we have with animal services and the judicial system here in Western North Carolina.” And Hope for Horses is always looking for volunteers, folks from around the region that can help in an array of ways and means. “We have a volunteer program where you go through an orientation. We’re almost maxed out on volunteers, but we’re always taking applications when a position opens up or there’s a specific need,” Zachary-Doan said. “Our volunteers love to be involved, and we always have projects going on — painting gates, mowing the fields, writing ‘thank you’ cards to donors.” Aside from her position as executive director of the nonprofit, Zachary-Doan — who has called Haywood County home for most of her life — has had a lifelong love and appreciation for horses, something that eventually manifested itself into actually owning her own. “Growing up, I always wanted a horse, but we never had a place to put it. But, when I became an adult and had a place for a horse, that was the first thing I got,” Zachary-Doan chuckled. Entering its third decade of service, each case that comes into the fold justifies that initial mission set forth by Hope for Horses back in 1999 — it’s a passion and determination that only grows deeper with each passing year. “It’s rewarding when you can make a difference in a horse’s life, and even in a human’s life,” Zachary-Doan said. “When we adopt a horse out and it finds a forever home, you see those people being rewarded in a different way by making a difference in that horse’s life. It’s a very special bond.”

Outdoor Living — Reconnecting with Nature
T
he connection between humans and nature is everlasting, so it’s no wonder creating a functional and serene outdoor living space is essential to most homeowners. A true outdoor living space embraces a flow between the interior and exterior elements of a home — a return to a primitive mindset when natural components were as vital as the structure itself. When created with intention, outdoor areas can increase living space, boost the value of a home, and foster emotional and physical wellness. For Adam Garry and his team at Gardenology, an Asheville-based landscape design-build firm, there’s often a focus on connecting outdoor areas to the kitchen and living room. With these two interior spaces being social hubs of a home, it makes sense to expand them outdoors. Projects include porch additions, outdoor kitchens, landscaping, walkways, and gardens. “People enjoy connecting with the natural world,” said Garry. “Sometimes the inside of a home is more comfortable because of temperature regulation and such, but many would rather sit outside under an oak tree rather than indoors on a couch. In Asheville, especially, there’s a trend toward this type of healthy living.” The pandemic resulted in a frenzy of outdoor renovations all around the country. People were hungry to connect with friends and family in any way they could. If the only option was six feet apart outside, they made that happen. Walkways, play areas, privacy screens, outdoor theatres, and shade structures are a few examples of how homeowners have updated natural spaces over the past 18 months. Along with comprehensive changes, numerous folks have invested money in outdoor furniture, fire pits, and home
pools. With public facilities closed for extended periods, people brought those amenities to their own back yard. “During the pandemic, we worked a lot with our existing client base,” said Garry. “They wanted additional layers of experience. Like everyone, they wanted a cool outdoor space to enjoy.” According to pandemic-era data presented by Wakefield Research, 90 percent of Americans indicated outdoor living spaces were more valuable than ever before, and 78 percent made outdoor upgrades during COVID-19. Top outdoor activities included relaxing, playing with kids, dining, exercising, grilling, gardening, and entertaining. Each homeowner has a different desire when it comes to the functionality of outdoor spaces. “We really try to listen to our clients and understand their goals,” said Garry. “Schematically, it’s all about understanding various relationships on a property. From there, we come up with design strategies and concepts.” Creating an outdoor oasis is nothing new for Americans, although the pandemic brought about a different purpose for renovating natural components of one’s home. Jackie Hirschhaut, vice president of the American Home Furnishings Alliance and executive director of its outdoor division, the International Casual Furnishings Association, summed it up by saying, “At the beginning of 2020, we were focused on creating outdoor spaces that complement our homes and lifestyle, and today, we are creating outdoor spaces that supplement our sense of wellbeing and transform an outdoor area into an outdoor room.”

The land surrounding 2 Arboretum Road has been in the Vanderbilt family since the 1890’s when George W Vanderbilt chose Western North Carolina as the treasured location for his home, Biltmore House. George Henry Vanderbilt Cecil, grandson of George Vanderbilt, and his wife, Nancy Owen Cecil, built 2 Arboretum as their family home. They lived here in this quiet enclave for over 35 years. The rock bridges along Arboretum Road were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The property surrounding the house is the last undeveloped residential acreage owned by Biltmore Farms that will ever be available for purchase within the Town of Biltmore Forest.

Montford Park Players — A Storied Gem Founded by Hazel Robinson in 1973, Asheville’s Montford Park Players is North Carolina’s longest running Shakespeare theatre company. The troupe is unique in that shows are free and performed in an outdoor amphitheatre carved from an urban hillside. Visitors and locals flock to 92 Gay Street year after year to enjoy cultural arts under a Blue Ridge sky. Executive Director John Russell has been part of the organization on and off since the early 1980s. In 2006, he signed on as the nonprofit’s first employee and CEO. “You can bring a picnic, beverages, and even your dog,” said Russell. “It’s a relaxing venue, very much like an outdoor concert. There’s no need to dress up. Visitors can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy themselves.” Before the amphitheatre was built, the ensemble performed in Montford Park. In 1983, Asheville Parks and Recreation received funding through HUD, and the amphitheatre was built on the new Montford Community Center property, along with the community center and a baseball field. In 1997, as part of Asheville’s 200th birthday celebration and the 25th anniversary of Montford Park Players, the amphitheatre was renamed the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre after the organization’s founder. According to Russell, casts hail from all walks of life. Some are professional actors, others are local high school or college students. Open auditions are held before each show, so while veteran actors often return, roles are open to anyone. Approximately 200 members donate their time, talent, and expertise annually. With an increase in the number of shows produced each summer, the percentage of Shakespeare to all shows is 50 percent or less, which is true for most Shakespearean theatre companies around the country. “Regarding our Shakespearean productions, we generally try to keep the classic language, unless it contains archaic terms that modern audiences won’t understand,” said Russell. “Occasionally, we’ll adapt and modernize, depending on the director, but generally, we try to be faithful to Shakespeare’s original language.”
The Montford Park Players are one of 15 theatres worldwide to have staged all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays. In 2018, Montford Park Players recorded the highest attendance on record with more than 18,000 patrons attending the performances. That year, the North Carolina Theatre Conference named them the Community Theatre Award winner. Russell was recently awarded the Mark R. Sumner Award in recognition of his work in advancing the outdoor theatre movement. “I really enjoy the fact that we can bring joy to people’s hearts by entertaining them for a few hours and transporting them to a world where they don’t have to worry about their problems,” said Russell. “You can visibly see the delight on their faces and that is a wonderful feeling for us.”

Al Fresco Dining — Evolving with the Times
W
estern North Carolina is known for its stunning views and mild weather, so it’s no surprise the Blue Ridge Mountains are a popular hotspot for al fresco dining. During the pandemic, folks enjoyed outdoor dining more than ever, both at home and at restaurants. Some things related to COVID-19 have reshaped the American psyche long term, and al fresco dining may be the perfect example. People enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of dining outdoors and plan to continue, despite venues and establishments reopening indoor spaces. Supper clubs, which rose to popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, have seen a resurgence. The social aspect of supper clubs, as well as their selective menus, gives them an allure not offered in a traditional dining establishment. Smoky Park Supper Club decided to blend the concept of a supper club with a picturesque setting. Nestled alongside the French Broad River near the River Arts District, Smoky Park Supper Club is led by a team who is committed to local quality food and bringing people together. The Blind Pig Supper Club of Asheville falls under a more modern, underground concept, which centers on connecting foodies with the chefs who prepared the meals, the farmers who grew it, and the people who work to make the dining experience enjoyable. Information about menu and event locations is kept private until close to the date and is disclosed only to registered attendees. “I was inspired by supper clubs I’d seen in California while there for culinary school,” said Mike Moore, founder of The Blind Pig. “There was nothing like it in Asheville, but there were a lot of great chefs in town. We brought it all together to create unique dining experiences that could not be replicated.” Moore was also inspired to give back to the community. Each Blind Pig dinner is associated with a local nonprofit. Al fresco dining isn’t solely correlated with supper clubs. People can create a beautiful outdoor dining experience in their own back yard. This became a cherished weekly or nightly event for many folks during the sheltering-inplace period of the pandemic. Dining in this way isn’t simply about sitting outside while eating. It’s about
28

creating a flow with the natural world and fresh foods. Hosts get creative with the table dressing, napkins, cutlery, and decor to make it feel more festive and special. Whether you’re enjoying an al fresco dining experience at home or at a supper club, the goal is to embrace simplicity. Dishes honor fresh, local ingredients, and the ambiance highlights the natural beauty that already surrounds us. Oftentimes, music is added to the mix. Smoky Park Supper Club and The Blind Pig integrate live music in their offerings. Al fresco dining is all about the moment, connecting with others while simultaneously stimulating the senses. When asked where supper clubs will be in ten years, Moore said, “The supper club concept will continue to evolve,” said Moore. “People crave unique experiences, and I do not see it ever dissipating but changing with new trends.”

Tryon International Equestrian Center
S
ince opening in 2014, the Tryon International Equestrian Center has become a worldwide hub for all things horse-related, as well as an entertainment destination and economic engine for Polk County and greater Western North Carolina. “This place is really a joyful, positive experience,” said Sarah Madden, public relations/marketing manager for the TIEC. “Especially when I get to introduce new people to this property. Every time, I’m reminded how special this place is — we’re surrounded by some of the world’s best riders and horses.” Featuring a 10,000-seat outdoor arena, more than 1,200 horse stalls, lodging, and numerous restaurants, the massive $200 million facility features a wide range of riding events each week. With millions of visitors already passing through its gates, the TIEC — which has also hosted the World Equestrian Games — is now whispered in the same breath as other legendary equine locations like Saratoga, Lexington, and Del Mar. “When you walk around here, it’s just so vibrant, thousands of people and hundreds of horses at any given time,” Madden said. “Alongside all of the competitions and events, there’s so many activities and entertainment options for children and adults [during our ‘Saturday Night Lights’ showcase], and numerous other things to do and see while you’re here. It’s one big celebration.” Despite the shutdown in 2020, the TIEC was still able to safely hold competitions. “The reason this place exists is that it’s for all who love horses,” Madden said. “And for those who couldn’t attend in person, we were really dedicated to being able to bring the events to them, which is why we broadcasted 97 live streams throughout the last year.” Madden noted that with the shutdown, the TIEC took the down time to circle back to its initial intent with the property, to refocus itself and its energy to have a stronger foundation of its vision to move forward in 2021 and beyond. “We refocused our core [values and mission], which is to provide as perfect an experience for competitors and spectators as possible,” Madden said. “It was a really unique opportunity to [rework] the competitor experience in our venue — there are so many moving parts here in making everything run smoothly.” Aside from the countless equestrian competitions, the TIEC also welcomes the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and live music gatherings with major national names, as seen by the “Night in the Country: Carolinas Music Festival Presented by Ingles.” Main stage performers for 2021 include Old Dominion, Miranda Lambert, Chris Young, Big & Rich, and Chase Rice, among numerous other acts. “It’s very exciting to host the music festival,” Madden said. “It’s going to be big for not only us, but also for Polk County and Western North Carolina, showcasing what we already know and love about this area to people who may not have been here before.” A horse enthusiast and rider as far back as she can remember, Madden looks forward to coming to work at the TIEC every single day, to share her deep passion with other riders and the curious alike. “As they say, ‘you’re either a horse person or you just haven’t found out yet,’” Madden said. “When we’re young, most of us go through the ‘horse phase,’ but many of us never outgrow that. Once you love horses, you kind of always come back to them, whether it’s watching them or riding them — the more access to horses we can give people, the more people will come to love them like we do.”

Golf by design in Western North Carolina
W
estern North Carolina is home to an astounding array of classic and modern golf courses that showcase its enviable Blue Ridge Mountain setting. The great game first came to the area in the 1920s, as Donald Ross made his way across the state leaving a trail of outstanding courses in his wake. The 1960s through 1980s saw the arrival of the Maples family, who would go on to design more than 100 courses in the Southeast. The 1990s and early 2000s were decades of rapid residential development, and big-budget courses from high-profile architects opened as centerpieces for numerous luxury communities around Asheville and Hendersonville. These five golf course architects from different eras had an indelible impact on the region’s 100-year golf timeline.
Donald Ross Dornoch, Scotland-born Ross forged his brand at Pinehurst Resort in the state’s Sandhills, designing four of the resort’s nine courses. The storied architect went on to craft more than 40 layouts between Wilmington and Asheville in the 1920s, saving some of his most impressive work for the mountains of Western North Carolina. The Omni Grove Park Inn’s 6,400yard Ross design is diminutive by today’s standards, but has a reputation for being enjoyable and in impeccable condition. What it lacks in distance, it makes up for in strategy, creativity, and unapologetic fun. The

tee box on the 332-yard 15th hole is an ideal spot to crack open a beverage from one of Asheville’s myriad craft breweries. The Asheville Municipal Golf Course, also designed by Ross, is one of the oldest courses in Western North Carolina. Opened in 1927, “Muni” was the first racially integrated course in the state. For history buffs, it’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just a few miles away, the exclusive Asheville Country Club features a vintage Ross track that was expertly restored by Richard Mandell in 2016.
Tom Fazio No modern golf course architect has had a bigger impact on the region than Tom Fazio. His influence started with Wade Hampton in Cashiers and Champion Hills in Hendersonville in the late 1980s and continued with Mountaintop (also in Cashiers) and Diamond Creek in Banner Elk in the decades to come. During a 20-year stretch, Fazio was involved with nearly every golf real estate project in the region. His office remains in downtown Hendersonville, just minutes away from Champion Hills, where he and his wife are members. Fazio refers to the 6,500yard layout as his “mountain masterpiece,” and splits his time between Hendersonville and Jupiter, Florida. He pulled off what some call a “miracle of modern golf design” at Champion Hills, routing the course and shaping the land, so that 12 of its 18 holes play downhill or level.
Jack Nicklaus Jack Nicklaus and Fazio dominate the residential golf course design
rankings. Between the two, they’re responsible for more than 50 percent of Golfweek’s “Best Residential Courses in the U.S.” The Golden Bear’s work in Western North Carolina spans nearly 40 years. His first “signature” course design was Elk River Club in Banner Elk, which opened in 1984 to rave reviews. In 2005, the Cliffs Communities tapped Nicklaus to design the newest of its seven layouts, The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. And what a debut it was, with Nicklaus playing an 18-hole exhibition match against his good friend and actor Kevin Costner. The par-71 plays through native woodlands, streams, and open fields that were once farmland. It’s the centerpiece of a thriving luxury community just minutes from Asheville.
Ellis and Dan Maples Dan Maples hails from the “first family of North Carolina golf.” His grandfather, Frank, was a construction superintendent for Donald Ross, and his father, Ellis, was one of the most sought-after golf course architects in the Southeast in the 1960s and 1970s. Dan and Ellis even worked on 17 courses together, including the Championship Course at Grandfather Mountain Golf and Country Club in Linville. Dan designed Rumbling Bald’s marquee course, Apple Valley, which is under an hour from Asheville on the north end of Lake Lure. The 6,800-yard par-72 layout reopened in August 2020 sporting new Champion Bermuda greens and other agronomic enhancements. Known for both its conditioning and playability, Apple Valley’s 4,617-yard forward tees are popular with women and beginners.

Helping Create Dream Homes
A
s a leading architecture, construction, and interior design firm, PLATT has experienced first-hand the surge in home construction and renovation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Based in Brevard, North Carolina, PLATT has been offering comprehensive services since 1982 and can attest to the recent spike in custom homes. “We’ve definitely seen an uptick in new builds, as well as renovations, over the last year,” said Parker Platt, current president and son of founder Alfred F. Platt, Jr. “During the pandemic, people were in their homes more than ever and had time to focus on what they like, what they don’t like, and how they could make it better.” Several trends are arising in terms of high-end renovations. While kitchen and bath remodels are always top on the list, homeowners are also interested in taking back their basement space by creating home gyms, entertainment rooms, and additional living areas. People are also motivated to create athome workspaces that offer an abundance of natural light. The pandemic

showed the world that working full time from home is possible, but individuals want to feel creative and productive in their space. PLATT has seen an increase in new builds across Western North Carolina, which they attribute to a renewed desire to live in more open spaces. Similarly, new homeowners are coming into the area and purchasing properties. “For various reasons, some clients have decided to buy versus build,” said Platt. “We’ve helped them update and personalize their new home with some limited but significant changes to kitchen and bathrooms, such as updating fixtures and finishes to make them more in line with personal style and interest.” Many architecture firms have worked with clients to create a flow between outdoor and indoor living space. “Due to the pandemic, many homeowners are now focused on outdoor living,” said Platt. “There’s a big focus on creating spaces that seamlessly blend the indoors with the outdoors, to be enjoyed year-round.
There’s a big focus on creating spaces that seamlessly blend the indoors with the outdoors, to be enjoyed year-round. The trend observed by PLATT and other regional firms is not isolated to the Blue Ridge Mountains and other rural areas. According to Max Anderson, chief economist at Porch.com, an online company connecting homeowners to contractors, levels of home improvement are at an all-time high. During a study conducted over a three-month period in late 2020, the company tracked 330 million U.S. Google searches for home improvement work, which is up 50 percent from the previous year. Anderson says recent rock-bottom interest rates have made home improvement projects more attractive. He also notes that in unsettling times, spending on one’s home can be a comforting investment. Since the start of the pandemic, Parker and his team have worked with new and repeat clients to ensure they have the home of their dreams. “The best part of what we do is getting to know our clients,” said Parker, “really listening to what they want when it comes to their home and then helping them make it happen.”

Tesla Revolutionizes the Truck When Mike Hoffman bought his first Tesla in March 2018, he knew he’d never go back to another gas-powered vehicle. “I’ve always been intrigued by electric vehicles, but Tesla also caught my attention because they weren’t making weird looking cars that were low range and with outdated technology,” he said. “The software updates and charging network are the biggest draws for me. The fact that Tesla doesn’t make gas-powered cars means they have to make the very best electric [vehicles] or they wouldn’t compete — it’s their entire reason for existing.” President of the Official Tesla Owners Club of Western North Carolina (wnctesla.com), Hoffman is at the forefront of what’s not only here and now, but also what’s just around the corner. With Tesla vehicles more and more common in our daily lives, the upcoming release of the Tesla Cybertruck is highly-anticipated. “The Cybertruck is very different from the average truck. The frame is not ‘body-on-frame’ like a typical truck, but also not ‘uni-body’ like a Honda Ridgeline,” Hoffman said. “It’s actually an exoskeleton, where the body is the structure of the vehicle, much like some aircraft. The body panels are the same stainless steel used on the Starship from SpaceX, as opposed to aluminum used on most new trucks. The [Cybertruck] doors are bulletproofed to a 9mm bullet, resistant to dings and scratches, and the windows are armored glass.” Though the Cybertruck has yet to hit the streets for the general public, consumers have already made nearly 1 million reservations, all eager to get in line and purchase the next chapter of the automobile. So, what’s it like behind the wheel of a Tesla? “You really have to drive one to get it. The acceleration, silence, and technology is just mind-blowing. When you get in a Tesla, it’s like going from a flip-phone to an iPhone,” Hoffman said. “And safety is also the number one priority for Tesla. All of their cars have amazing technology to prevent crashes. But, in the event of a crash that isn’t prevented, Tesla has five-star safety ratings in all categories to keep you and your family safe.” In terms of overhead costs, Hoffman noted that his basic maintenance for the two Tesla vehicles in his garage is pretty minimal, with the money saved adding up every single day. “Since 2018, I have done no maintenance, except tires and windshield wiper fluid. The ‘fuel’ cost is a fraction of what it would have been for gas. [My wife and I] have driven 57,000 miles total between us [in our Teslas],” Hoffman said. “The cost for the electricity we’ve used is around $1,600. In a 30-mile-per-gallon car at $2.80 per gallon, that would be $5,300 in gas, plus the oil changes and [maintenance]. The more you drive [a Tesla], the more it saves, even with a higher upfront cost.” What about finding charging stations? What can one expect with the actual driving experience and logistics involved in going from point A to point B? “A typical [charging] stop is 20 minutes. The longest stop we have ever made was about 50 minutes. The car tells you where you will stop and for how long, so just plan on eating at the longer stops,” Hoffman said. “When we took delivery of our first Tesla [in 2018], we immediately took a trip to Florida, and even then, the supercharger network was just fine. We just had to time our food and coffee stops around the charging stops. Since then, there have been many more locations added to charge, and the new charging stations are faster.” Editor’s Note: In September, the third annual Blue Ridge Parkway Tesla Drive will be held. With over 140 cars registered to attend, you can learn more at brptesladrive.org.

The Adventure of Downtown Living
W
hen Asheville was founded in the late 18th century, it was little more than an outpost, a stopping point on the way to great adventures for early explorers such as Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. The town was a small haven in the midst of constant transit, motion, adventure, comings, and goings. Over the centuries though, some of those travelers stayed, and slowly the outpost town nestled in the Swannanoa Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains filled in to become a veritable city on the hill. A city with grand Art Deco buildings standing sturdy alongside new, ecofriendly, super-efficient ones. Asheville is an oasis that many adventurers now call home.

Today, it is possible to live in luxury with all the amenities and conveniences downtown living has to offer, with the wild adventure of the Blue Ridge Mountains right at your doorstep. According to Sandra Alguire, luxury marketing specialist for Beverly-Hanks, these sorts of options are exploding. There is a lot of new construction underway and there is even more slated for the coming year. “We don’t see the growth subsiding anytime soon,” said Alguire. In addition, homeowners are investing in and rehabbing existing properties. Asheville is home to an impressive collection of Art Deco buildings dating to the early 20th century, buildings that were largely abandoned during
the Great Depression. Remodeling the inside of these buildings to possess modern, stylish amenities while maintaining the value of the architecture itself has made for unique and exciting living spaces. The history of Asheville is maintained in the bones of these fresh, new, and beautiful homes. “As these buildings get rehabbed or built, we do see a whole lot of out-ofstate buyers, a lot of second-home buyers who just love the mountains and the galleries and all the variety of activities and things to do here,” said Alguire. One such rehabbed property on Broadway was a finalist for the 2021 HGTV Ultimate House Hunt contest in the Downtown Dwelling category. The refurbished condo features exposed hardwood beams and a French Provincial-style interior. The property is indicative of the larger picture in downtown Asheville today: more options, higher quality. “When they go to sell, they’re able to secure a higher sale price because of the work that they’ve done,” said Alguire. The downtown Asheville luxury market is on a steady upward trajectory, according to Alguire. While other price points in the Asheville real estate scene follow the ebbs and flows of the overall real estate market, downtown luxury living is constant. Even now, in the midst of a feeding frenzy at lower price points, downtown living has remained much more balanced. Similarly, when compared nationally, downtown Asheville looks very stable. As opposed to the volatile luxury markets of places like San Francisco or New York, Asheville has seen decades of constant appreciation. “Asheville is just kind of quietly in the corner appreciating consistently every year,” said Alguire. “We’re seeing people who have studied the market who may not even plan on living here, even part-time, but are investing money here because they see that they’re going to have a strong return on their investment.” However, while Asheville has seen an upward trajectory in high-end living, Alguire noted that prices still seem very reasonable to out-of-state buyers, or people coming from other markets. Plus, there is always the promise of adventure in downtown Asheville.
