Haywood County boasts 554 scenic square miles, including beautiful mountains, fertile valleys and rolling foothills. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies just to the northwest, while such major southeastern cities as Charlotte, Greenville, Knoxville and Atlanta are easily accessed by way of an efficient interstate highway system. Immediately east of Haywood County lies Asheville, one of North Carolina's most visited locales.

Transportation & Utilities HIGHWAYS: I-40, US 23-74, US 19, & US 276

RAIL: Norfolk and Southern Railway Corporation.

TRUCK: The county is served by several common carriers and contract truck lines on either the interstate or intrastate system.

AIR: Haywood County is served by Asheville Regional Airport, a 30-minute drive away. Service can also be obtained from Greenville, South Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee.

ELECTRICITY: Progress Energy, Haywood Electric Membership Corporation, and Town of Waynesville.

GAS: Public Service Company of North Carolina provides natural gas service to Haywood County. Propane is also available from local distributors.

WATER: Municipal systems in Haywood County each have their own water source and waste treatment facility.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS: Service provided by AT&T and numerous long distance carriers.

HEALTHCARE: Medwest Haywood: 189-bed facility with approximately 125 physicians.

HIGHER EDUCATION: Haywood Commmunity College is regarded as one of the finest twoyear institutions in the country. With an enrollment of 5,122 students (6,952 continuing education) and 186 full-time and 219 part-time staff, the school offers over 55 programs of study, including such specialized areas as Forestry Management, Production Crafts, Cosmetology, Nursing, Early Childhood, Manufacturing Engineering and a manufacturing certification program. Augmenting the college is the Regional High Technology Center, a $4.0 million facility geared to provide training in machining and aeronautics technologies. Recreation Haywood County includes portions of the Pisgah National Forest, Shining Rock Wilderness Area and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The county offers a variety of activities including fishing, hiking, hunting and seven challenging and scenic golf courses. Cataloochee Ski Area, North Carolina's oldest ski resort, is located atop Fie Top Mountain. The scenic Blue Ridge Parkway stretches 24 miles throughout the county.

Financial Assistance

Incentives Industrial Property Haywood County owns the Beaverdam Industrial Park, which is adjacent to Interstate 40, close to the Newfound Road interchange in East Haywood County. This site has electricity, city water, city sewer, and natural gas. Ten shovel-ready acres and 35 undeveloped acres are available for occupancy at the Beaverdam site, which also has all infrastructure in place. This park has easy access to Interstate 40 and is only 30 minutes from the Asheville Regional Airport. Haywood Community College's High Technology Center is located in the Waynesville Industrial Park. The $4.0 million facility provides industrial training in skills related to machining and aeronautics technology. Additionally, North Carolina's first Small Business and Industry Center is housed in the industrial park. This 17,000-square-foot business incubator facility provides industrial business space and support for potential new start-up industry.

North Carolina offers an array of financial assistance programs for new and expanding industry. Many of the financing programs provide flexible, incentive financing in the form of loans to businesses which create jobs and tax base in a community. Employee Training Through its 58 community colleges throughout the state, North Carolina offers the most comprehensive and advanced industrial training program in the nation. Funded solely by the state, the industrial training service is virtually unlimited and can accommodate any type of production job for new and expanding industry. Program design is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of the company. These programs will assist in recruiting personnel and will screen applicants for the skills and aptitudes that the company specifies.
