Dear Chamber Members: It’s been an exciting and productive year for the Haywood County Chamber Commerce and Economic Development, one in which we formed a new and exciting partnership while nurturing some that have existed for years. Our community and businesses should reap the benefits of these efforts for years to come. In what many are calling an innovative partnership, the Haywood Chamber of Commerce entered into a contractual agreement with the Asheville Chamber to collaborate in the recruitment of new business and industry to Haywood County. This partnership means the Asheville Chamber, specifically the Economic Development Division — whose budget is five times larger than Haywood’s — will market our properties alongside theirs at trade and site consultant visits throughout the US and abroad. Likewise, when they receive inquiries, they will assess their client’s requirements and share the properties of Haywood County if deemed a potential fit. The partnership has been a natural fit through shared resources, rewards, vision and values. In addition to our partnership with Asheville, we have also strengthened partnerships within our own communities through regular commercial Realtor meetings, semi-monthly topic focused town manger meetings, existing business visits along with member pop-ins and expanding our economic development resources. Just this past September, it was announced the owners of the Best Western Inn in Waynesville would begin construction of a new 65-room Hampton Inn. The success of this project came through the hard work of Haywood County Commissioners, Town of Waynesville Aldermen and other Haywood County leaders, along with consultation and support from the Asheville Chamber. While we’ve been busy launching our new economic development program and managing projects, we haven’t forgotten that we are a membership-driven organization with a mission to create and sustain a successful economic environment. Our networking, professional development and outreach ventures — Issues and Eggs, Young Professionals, Women in Business, Candidate Forums, the annual Elected Officials Reception, and the Legislative visit to Raleigh — all continue to be well-attended, informative and successful. Leadership Haywood is one program I continue to take pride in. A group of individuals get an upclose, hands-on education about the community and how its individual parts collectively make Haywood a stronger community. Each year, I hear stories of how life-changing this program has been for many and how the participants form a bond that is everlasting. To me, nurturing young leaders is one of our most important roles. It’s been very gratifying to be a part of these partnerships and to know the chamber is playing a vital role in the economic prosperity of our community that will ultimately benefit all businesses and residents. Thank you for your membership, guidance and especially your support as we all work together to benefit the business community of Haywood County. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller Sincerely

Communities OF HAYWOOD COUNTY
www.HaywoodChamber.com
Waynesville is Haywood County’s largest town and county seat, containing both the Haywood County Courthouse and town of Waynesville offices. Single-family homes and retail stores surround the historic downtown with its quaint brick sidewalks, galleries, breweries, gourmet restaurants, clothing and gift stores. Locals mingle with droves of tourists for daily lunches, downtown festivals and gallery strolls. On the outskirts of town, mountain homes look across the valley below with views of the Smoky Mountains stretching for miles. The town was founded by Robert Love, a Revolutionary War colonel born in Virginia, and named after “Mad” Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero. After the war Love, his wife and 10 children relocated from their home in what is now part of eastern Tennessee to Haywood County’s Richland Creek area. Love was a wealthy man who had inherited a fortune and worked as a land speculator, lawyer, justice of the peace, surveyor, state senator and clerk of court. In 1809, Love donated 17 acres for the town of Waynesville, which was where the courthouse, jail and stocks were to be built. A main street and cross street were plotted, along with a public square and 30 half acre lots. The public square was located at the intersection of Main Street and Cross Street — today known as Church Street on one end and East Street on the other. The town of Hazelwood, incorporated in 1905, was a town in and of its own right until it merged with Waynesville in 1995. The tiny town initially housed employees at W.H. Cole’s sawmill, but then grew to contain several industries including a furniture factory, a tannery, and a shoe and boot factory. Houses constructed in the area tend not to have basements, due to a high water table. Hazelwood is home to the Folkmoot Friendship Center, headquarters of the state’s official international festival, celebrated each year in July. The original downtown area of Hazelwood has its own unique personality and is now home to a small cluster of restaurants, a coffee shop, a book store, and specialty retail stores with plenty of on-site parking. Nearby communities include Allens Creek, Hyatt Creek, Balsam and Saunook.
CANTON The neighboring towns of Canton and Clyde are the bedrock of eastern Haywood County. Canton largely grew up out of service to what is now Evergreen Packaging, a large paper mill on the banks of the Pigeon River. Many of the homes in the area, particularly in downtown Canton, are architectural gems. The tiny but well-designed buildings housed mill workers and managers. The town rose in the early 1900s and was a bustle of activity in Haywood County. Canton’s downtown buildings are an inter-

COMMUNITY
CLYDE Located east of Waynesville and west of Canton, Clyde is largely a residential community with a small central business district. Clyde’s lo-
cation makes it a great place for commuters with jobs in the region’s larger towns. Clyde is home to Haywood Community College, with its renowned professional crafts program, and Haywood Regional Medical Center, which is under the Duke-LifePoint umbrella. The town is also home to what is thought to be the oldest house in Haywood County, the Shook-Smathers Home. Jacob Shook, a Revolutionary War veteran, built the house in 1795. It began as a log house, but the home’s attic was turned into a large chapel. Today the restored home is a museum. The township of Clyde officially was formed in 1877, but was not incorporated until 1889. The town’s boundary forms a perfect circle. It is said that the circle’s midpoint was a knothole in a floorboard of the town’s train station, and from that knothole a geometric circle was drawn and all the area within that circle became part of the town. Nearby communities include Ratcliff Cove, Stamey Cove and Thickety.
LAKE JUNALUSKA Lake Junaluska is located in the heart of Haywood County. The community is nestled around a 200-acre lake with incredible views of the Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains. Lake Junaluska was originally established in 1913 as a retreat center for Methodists, and today it is open to all. It was named for Junaluska Mountain, which was named after a Cherokee Indian chief. From the beginning, Lake Junaluska was a conference
The eastern gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Maggie Valley was incorporated as a tourist town, a fact evident by its mix of family restaurants, music and entertainment venues, rental properties and souvenir stores. The town is a bustling center of activity throughout the year and a hotspot for motorcyclists. Maggie Valley got its name after one of the valley’s 1860s settlers, John Sidney Setzer, realized the town was in need of a post office. No name, no post office, the government said. Four suggestions were sent to Washington, three of them being Setzer’s daughters’ names — Cora, Mettie and Maggie. Maggie was selected, but it wasn’t until about 1947 that the word “valley” was added. Miss Maggie is still around, portrayed by a volunteer who wears a yellow bonnet, waves to passing cars and appears at festivals. The Wheels Through Time transportation museum houses what some consider the world’s finest collection of vintage motorcycles, and nearly all of them still run. The museum — which also has a classic car collection — attracts visitors from throughout the world and has been featured in several television specials. Maggie Valley also boasts Haywood County’s first distillery, Elevated Mountain, which is open for tours and tastings. Cataloochee Ski Area, also in Maggie Valley, is one of the South’s premier ski resorts. Nearby communities include Dellwood, Jonathan Creek, Hemphill, Ivy Hill, Soco, Rabbit Skin, White Oak and approaching the Tennessee Line, Fines Creek, Harmon’s Den, and Panther Creek.

esting mix of styles with notable structures such as the Imperial Hotel. Built soon after the railroad reached Canton around 1880, it was originally a private home. Over the years it was advertised as “one of the best commercial hotels of the $2 class in this state,” and in 1918 was renovated to become separate offices, shops and residences. The town’s Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and several new businesses have opened in recent years including restaurants, a brewery and a bakery. Just south of Canton is Bethel, a rural community located in an open valley north of the now-famous Cold Mountain. The community provides a rural escape where you’ll also find a local restaurant, gas station, produce stand and home-run businesses dotting the miles of rolling pasture land tucked in between mountain peaks. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest are easily accessible via U.S. 276 or N.C. 215 from Bethel. Cruso is south of Bethel along U.S. 276. The community proclaims itself “Nine miles of friendly people and one old grouch.” There’s even an annual contest to elect the old grouch. Nearby communities include Beaverdam, Dutch Cove, Hominy, Pigeon, Newfound and Sunburst.

center as well as a residential community. Today the grounds include two hotels, dormitory and motel-like facilities, a campground, a golf course, 16 gardens, meeting facilities and 800 residential homes. The 2.3-mile walking trail around the lake is one of the most popular recreation areas in Haywood County. Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center hosts thousands of guests every year from around the world. The center welcomes corporate and nonprofit groups, families, weddings, reunions, vacation guests and churches of all denominations. It also hosts concerts and other events throughout the year, including the Balsam Range Art of Music Festival, Smoky Mountain Folk Festival and a fantastic Independence Day Celebration. The lake is open to all to stay in the hotels or vacation rental homes, walk around the lake or participate in recreational activities including a pool, boat rentals, tennis, volleyball and shuffleboard. The mission of Lake Junaluska is to be a place of Christian hospitality where lives are transformed through the renewal of soul, mind and body. Nearby communities include Crabtree and Iron Duff.

1906: A logging operation and sawmill was placed into operation near Lake Logan. 1908: The Canton mill opened and produced pulp which was shipped to the Hamilton mill. 1914: Canton mill began producing paperboard. 1930: Peter G. Boiler and Big Bill Boiler were built. These boilers were state-ofthe-art pulverized coal boilers and the largest industrial boilers of their type in the world at the time of installationvery leading edge. 1934: Began producing milk carton board. 1935: The Champion Coated Paper Company (Hamilton, Ohio) and The Champion Fibre Company (Canton) merged and changed the name to The Champion Paper and Fibre Company. This step was just basically a formality because the mills were being operated by the same management. 1960: The Waynesville extruding plant was opened. The plant extruded a plastic coating on the Canton bleached board before its conversion to package form. The coated paperboard made at Waynesville is used to make a variety of liquid-packaging containers including gable-top cartons, paper cups and food trays. 1965: The No. 19 Paper Machine was built to produce FDA-grade paperboard. 1993: The Canton Modernization Project was completed. State-of-the-art pulp bleaching technology and significant upgrades to the mill’s water and color control systems significantly reduced the mill’s wastewater color, flow. The project cost approximately $300 million. 1995: In the Canton Mill, the Bleach Filtrate Recycling (BFR) process pilot was completed. The process became permanent in 1997. The Canton Mill is the only mill in the world to operate this color prevention technology. 2004: Extensive flooding occurred in Western North Carolina when the remnants of Hurricanes Francis and Ivan came through Western North Carolina. The damaging floods cost the Canton Mill almost $30 million. Over $5 million has been spent to improve the mill’s flood control systems. 2007: Evergreen Packaging, Inc. purchased Blue Ridge Paper Products Inc. and the company continues in operation today as a key part of the Evergreen Packaging platform.

economic presence the Canton and Waynesville facilities have in terms of the regional business sector, the company has taken great strides recently in its mission to not only increase its sustainability, but also ensure the bountiful future of our natural resources. “We use water and timber resources, and we have a wealth of those resources here,” Brown noted. Evergreen recently converted two coal boilers to natural gas, and is currently enhancing the pollution control equipment in its two remaining boilers. At an estimated cost of $50 million, the project also includes a $12 million state grant. This transition is due for completion by the end of 2018. And since 2004, the company has been part of the Pigeon River Reintroduction, a partnership between North Carolina and Tennessee that brings back native species of fish to the river. The effort has reintroduced over 27 species and 45,000 fish since its inception. Within the manufacturing process, Evergreen uses renewable energy-biomass from trees, which is responsible for about 60 percent of the energy needed to create the products. And with responsible forest management a main priority, the company works with family forest owners in its Evergreen Forest Certification program that aims to improve practices in the management of forests.

ith 110 years of operation in Western North Carolina, Evergreen Packaging has remained steadfast in who it is and what it does. “Evergreen’s role is to make paper products. We’ve been here over a hundred years, making paperboard, envelope paper, and uncoated freesheet paper,” said Derric Brown, Director of Sustainability for Evergreen. “But, we’re also very involved in the Town of Canton and the entire Haywood County community, where a lot of our employees live and where we actively help support and contribute to the community.” With over 1,230 employees in North Carolina, Evergreen is the largest private employer in the region. The paper manufactured here is used to make a wide array of products including (but not limited to) paper cups, ovenable trays and gable top cartons. “These products are used across the United States, across North America, and really across the whole world,” Brown said. “We’re able to make products here, with the resources and people here. What’s critical to our success is to be able to make paper products that are in demand today.” “It has to do with us being very innovative, listening to our customers and seeing what their needs are, and meeting those needs,” added Holly Rogers, an administrator for the Evergreen management team. They’re also deeply involved in the Christmas Basket and Santa Pal programs, which provides food and clothing for families in need during the holidays. Evergreen contributes $50 to the programs for each safe day worked. “We want to be very involved in the community,” Rogers said. “We really are working to increase our partnerships in the community, such as Pisgah High School and the ‘Pulp and Paper’ program, and working with the employment office NC Works in Haywood County to grow our workforce.” That workforce continues to grow, whether it be by the number of employees or by how

Jose Gonzalez and Gabe Munoz win “Entrepreneur of the Year” and “Business Start-Up Competition”
Experience Haywood 2018 |
“Go into the competition not thinking, ‘I’m never going to win this.’ Go into it knowing you’re going to come out with something, a real business plan, even if you don’t win.” — Jose Gonzalez
Opened in 2015, Main Street Mercantile has become a popular shopping destination.
it, launching J. Gabriel. The store is a testament to the vitality and enthusiasm that exists in the business sector here, something that rubs off on locals and tourists alike. “Since we’ve been here, we’ve seen a lot of positive changes. This town always finds a way to make progress that makes everyone happy. This community is what it is because it’s thriving, all the businesses, festivals and events — there’s always something going on in town,” Gonzalez said. “That atmosphere affects your community. The whole village comes together, with downtown being the soul of the town. Most folks who visit here don’t have a downtown like ours — they here come for this environment.” With two stores up and running, Gonzalez
and Munoz entered the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce’s “Business Start-Up Competition” this past year. Business plan inhand, they won the $10,000 grant that was used to recently open Moonlight & Garbo, also located on Main Street. As proof positive of the benefits of the grant, let alone the advantages found in putting one’s business idea to paper, Gonzalez encourages anyone interested in trying their hand at the competition to do, so no matter what the outcome is. “Go into the competition not thinking, ‘I’m never going to win this.’ Go into it knowing you’re going to come out with something, a real business plan, even if you don’t win,” he said. “You discover what resources are available in the area, more about your business that you didn’t know, and it always will be a useful tool to go back and see where you were, where you’re at, where you’re going.” When asked just what he loves about being a small, independent business owner, Gonzalez can’t help but say it’s about the interactions between both sides of the counter. “It is a lot of work. Running a business is 24/7. I love the one-on-one with people, and you’re in control of making the changes and the differences that set you apart from other stores,” he said. “It’s not just about working for yourself, but loving what you do. We do this because we’re passionate about retail and that is the number one driver and should be for everything we do in our lives — passion.”
www.HaywoodChamber.com
It’s an interaction that never gets old for Jose Gonzalez. “You’ve carried on where the other stores left off,” a woman told Gonzalez one recent afternoon. “What you’ve done is take a little bit of what made each of those stores special that used to be here, and you’ve carried it on — this place is phenomenal.” Standing behind the counter of his store J. Gabriel Home & Gifts, Gonzalez modestly thanks the woman before she exits the business situated on Main Street in downtown Waynesville. “You see, that’s what it’s all about, people having that experience, they walk in and say thank you for having the store,” Gonzalez reflected. “It fills a niche, there’s a need for this. You want to be downtown, that’s where the action is, but there was a need for a store of this nature.” A hometown gift shop, J. Gabriel does fill a need in a time where shops like this are few and far between in small towns, especially in the era of big box stores and online shopping. “You’re going to get something a little more original here from a mom-and-pop store like ours,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez and his partner, Gabe Munoz, moved to Waynesville in 2015. They had owned and operated successful bath and body stores in Miami, Florida, and Thomasville, Georgia, but were looking for the next chapter of their professional and personal lives. “From Black Mountain to Dillsboro, we checked every town out. And then Waynesville was the last one we hit upon, and we knew this was it,” Gonzalez said. “It’s the quaintness here. You feel this sense of community, where it wasn’t just about the tourism. And the geographical location, you get to anywhere from here really easily. We wanted to come here and immediately start something.” So, they did, opening Main Street Mercantile the same year they relocated to Haywood County. Filled with gifts for the home and from the heart, the store was an immediate hit with locals. But, the duo knew they eventually wanted something smack dab in the middle of downtown. “A year into Main Street Mercantile, we were already planning the opening of the second store — we knew the possibility would happen,” Gonzalez said. “We always wanted to have a presence downtown. Main Street Mercantile had become a more local place to shop, where the downtown store is about the foot traffic of locals and tourists.” Hence when a space in the heart of downtown became available, the couple jumped on

Selling Haywood County Economic development partnership revs up n the west side of Jonathan Creek Road in Haywood County sits a parcel of land where crops and cows are being rapidly replaced by bulldozers and cones and piles upon piles of dirt. That county-owned 22-acre plot bordered by an idyllic creek at the base of a small mountain may be one of the keys to future economic prosperity as one of the largest and most shovel-ready sites in the area. But the Jonathan Creek site — and others in Haywood County of varying size, shape, and purpose — are nothing without a buyer, and as of Jan. 1, 2018, it became the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce’s responsibility to help find one. Through a unique regional partnership, Haywood has outsourced much of its economic development activity to the AACC, which will simultaneously market Haywood properties along with those in Buncombe. The challenges and opportunities of this new paradigm are clearly visible, but what remains to be seen is how successful it will be in selling Haywood County.
O
A BIGGER STAGE The agreement between the Haywood and Asheville chambers represents a new approach to economic development for rural counties such as Haywood.
18
“The Haywood County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Council had meetings over a period of time and decided that we needed to improve our efforts of economic development in Haywood County,” said Haywood Chamber President Cece Hipps. “So what we decided is, why don’t we ask our partners to the east of us, Asheville, to assist us in marketing our community, and marketing our commercial sites and providing additional job opportunities in Haywood County?” Haywood and Buncombe counties have long had an economic relationship that is inextricably linked, but with a population four times the size of Haywood’s, Buncombe County brings a lot more force to bear when competing for the attention of businesses looking for a site. “They have a lot of technology advancements that we don’t have and cannot afford to have,” Hipps said. Not that Haywood hasn’t scored it’s own economic development victories in the past — even luring an Asheville truck dealership to Canton in 2016 — but the retirement of EDC Director Mark Clasby last December signaled not only the end of an era that brought Walmart and Publix to Waynesville, but also the beginning of a new era in which outsourcing economic development makes better financial sense. “The concept of regionalism is something
that this community has always put as a priority,” said Haywood Economic Development Council Board Chairman Jason Walls of Duke Energy. “So leveraging the breadth and depth of our adjoining county and their economic development arm can be really helpful as we continue to market and grow our economy here locally.” Asheville’s brand remains strong across the country; nestled into a bowl-shaped valley that spans the French Broad River, the town and its environs are known for natural beauty and eclectic diversity in a state with some of the lowest business taxes in the nation; companies want to locate there because workers want to live there. That growth, however, has rapidly consumed large swaths of Buncombe’s developable land and driven rents through the roof; Haywood, on the other hand, has some prime acreage and more reasonable — albeit climbing — housing and commercial rents, along with similar access to highways, railways and runways. “As folks from the Asheville Chamber are travelling, their ability to sell all of this region — to help recruit business and industry here — will really help to rise all the tides in this community,” Walls said. “It allows us to be seen on a bigger stage with more people at more times, and really will be helpful as we continue to market and grow here.”

Last November, Haywood commissioners gave their blessing to the 3-year deal, which will cost about $100,000 a year; the EDC technically falls under the auspices of the Haywood Chamber, but county commissioners fund its operations to the tune of just over $200,000 annually. The Asheville Area Chamber’s economic development arm alone is many times the size of Haywood’s entire chamber, and has seen recent successes — New Belgium Brewing and Avadim Technologies, for example — that have made it the envy of municipalities across the country. “I think that we’ve been very, very focused on a strategy of knowing who we are, and matching that up with who might be attracted to that,” said Ben Teague, the former chief operating officer of the AACC and executive director of the Asheville Economic Development Coalition. “Over the last number of years we’ve probably done $1.1 billion worth of economic activity, and I think that’s spurred a lot of momentum that Haywood County and Buncombe County as a region can latch on to, and continue to work together toward the future.” For Teague and AACC Vice President of Economic Development Clark Duncan, Haywood County isn’t exactly terra incognita. “I have some generational connectivity to Haywood County. I know a lot of the fishing holes and things like that,” said Duncan. “But I’ve long been familiar with the numbers. The workforce, the talent, the demographics are all trending in really positive directions.” What he and Teague weren’t completely familiar with were the Haywood sites they’d be charged with marketing, so on Jan. 19 Haywood officials escorted Teague and Duncan around the county on a Leap Frog Tours bus. “Touring through the different towns and through the county, it really felt like a slice of Americana meets the beautiful mountains,” Teague said. “Mixed throughout, there were great sites for industrial [development] and sites for entrepreneurs.” One of those, presumably, is the Jonathan Creek site, which has languished since 2007. After winning a lengthy bidding war with a private developer — which drove the price up to $1.1 million — the county saw plans for a recreational sports complex fall flat as the Great Recession proceeded to erase a decade’s worth of economic growth in the region. Its development is a top priority as the property, which has sewer, water, electric and is just 2.5 miles from Interstate 40. Jonathan Creek’s not the only site Teague and Duncan saw on their tour; there are a number of parcels around the county — some not publicly listed for sale — that are ripe for development. One well-known spot just outside of Canton is the Beaverdam Industrial Park. That site remains an attractive option, just as it was when former EDC Executive Director Mark Clasby

LODGING
A legendary lodging and recreational spot, The Swag borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Above the distraction The Swag honors the past, welcomes the future igh atop a mountain overlooking Haywood County, Annie Haslam Colquitt sits across a dining room table at The Swag. A rainstorm has just swept through, with a cold breeze floating through the open front door. She gazes around, her eyes slowly drifting out the windows onto the deep woods of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park bordering the property. “There’s just a feeling in this place that’s so special,” she smiled. “It’s removed from any sort of stress of everyday life, the hustle and bustle. When you come here, you’re coming to a home — a warmth and hospitality that’s unique to the mountains.” Consisting of several cozy cabins orbiting the large guesthouse, The Swag had been owned by Dan and Deener Matthews since 1969. At first, it was the couple’s private abode, but soon became a world-renowned lodging and dining experience. And when word emerged this past winter that the Matthews were looking to finally sell The Swag, Annie and her husband, David Colquitt, both in their early 30s, jumped on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “It was a hard decision for Dan and Deener to make because they love this place, they’ve poured so much of themselves into The Swag,” Annie said. “They bought the land when they were in their 30s and ran in it into their mid-to-late 80s. We could only be so lucky if we get that kind of lifetime here. It’s such an amazing thing to think about — for us, for our kids, for our family.” But, the decision to sell The Swag was made that much easier knowing that the new owners came from a family of dear friends of the Matthews.

“This is a place where people come to connect and reconnect, and we will always retain that genuine sense of community — between staff and guests, staff and staff, guests and guests.” — Annie Haslam Colquitt, owner, The Swag
Experience Haywood 2018 | www.HaywoodChamber.com
“My grandparents have been the best of friends with Dan and Deener for decades. They’ve come up here on several occasions,” Annie said. “My dad also used to visit The Swag when he was in high school. David and I came here (in 2011) for our honeymoon, too.” Annie’s grandfather is James “Jim” Haslam II, founder of the Pilot Corporation, which owns and operates numerous convenience stores and travel centers throughout the United States and Canada. Her father, James “Jimmy” Haslam III, is the current CEO of Pilot, based out of Knoxville, Tennessee. And her uncle, Bill Haslam, is the current governor of Tennessee. In terms of the longtime traditions of The Swag, the Colquitts aim to keep the property as is — physically and emotionally. “The core things will definitely stay the same. It’s about staying connected to nature and preserving that. We’re not interested at all in selling the green spaces here. We will remain stewards of the land,” Annie said. “This is a place where people come to connect and reconnect, and we will always retain that genuine sense of community — between staff and guests, staff and staff, guests and guests.” Though The Swag is a private, reservation only inn, anyone can come up the mountain for dinner or the popular Wednesday picnic. By doing this, visitors are welcomed to wander the property and immerse themselves in all of its natural beauty. “You can also reserve a lunch or picnic ahead of time if you’re hiking through in the park,” Annie said. “It’s such a great experience that most people don’t even know it’s an option.” Aside from the weekly dinners and picnics, The Swag will continue to offer an array of programs for its guests. Each week, an artisan or naturalist will hold a specific residency, where guests can partake in several activities — going for a hike, learning about wildflowers, painting a landscape or perhaps hearing some live Appalachian music. As well, The Swag’s Executive Chef Jake Schmidt will also hold cooking schools semi-regularly. And on a recent evening (aka: “Barbecue Night”), The Swag is once again filled to capacity with folks from near and far, all coming together for a hearty, gut-busting meal from Chef Schmidt and his incredibly talented kitchen. Faces are mingling with other faces, known and unknown, the building glowing not only from the dining room lights, but also the jovial souls inhabiting the beloved space. “I love the mountains, love the Smokies. It’s the natural beauty of this place that drew us in. It’s the community of the longtime guests and the employees who have worked here for years, and the bonds between them. It’s humbling and inspiring,” Annie said. “I feel like every time we come up here, get out of the car, look around and walk the property, I can’t believe how lucky we are to be part of this story — to call this place home.”

troop sleeper train car which they’re currently restoring for use as a rental option. Adorned with bunkbeds, it can hold dozens of people, with its roots tracing back to the Civil War. “That train car carried soldiers up, down and across the country,” Hillis said. “And kids today don’t really get to experience something like that.” Coming from a large family, Hillis noted the
importance of focusing on the idea of family and what it means to actually spend time together in the digital age, and how that focus remains at the core of what the property aims to create and conjure. “That quality time together is a lost art these days in the hustle and bustle of a busy America,” she said. “And with this property, we love to share what God has given us with others.”
www.HaywoodChamber.com
What was one man’s dream has now touched the hearts and minds of countless others. “This place is more than just a ‘cabin in the woods,’” said Cheryl Hillis. “It’s where multigenerational families can come and spend real time together. All of this was what my father wanted to do with his life, he’s really been a visionary.” Hillis’ father, Harold Clackett, was a 28-year UPS driver on Long Island. He and his wife raised six kids and lived a pretty normal life. But, Clackett couldn’t stop thinking about someday leaving it all behind and taking his family to start over in the mountains. As he was nearing retirement, he knew that long-held dream of a new life was starting to take shape. “He wanted to live somewhere with four seasons, didn’t want to go to Florida, wanted to get out of New York,” Hillis said. “A friend told him about Western North Carolina, so he and my mom stayed in Maggie Valley. They fell in love with the area and found a parcel of land. They started with 18 acres, and for four years before he retired, he’d spend his vacation time clearing the land, putting up the cabin and getting the property ready.” Now hovering around 72 acres, the Clyde property, known as Buffalo Creek Vacations, features custom built cabins for large families, cozy renovated train cabooses, hiking trails, recreational opportunities and a large pasture filled with dozens of bison — a truly serene sight to behold. “I love it in the morning, where we’re out with the bison, and the guests come down to watch them with their coffee,” Hillis said. “These guests cherish these memories, and we enjoy helping people spend quality time with their families.” The inspiration of a vast landscape filled with adventure amid Mother Nature was always at the forefront of why Clackett found himself and his family in Western North Carolina. But, the other side of it is the mere fact the family truly enjoys hosting and entertaining others. “My mom and dad have always had the gift of hospitality. Ever since we were little kids, they loved to entertain people and bring them to their house,” Hillis said. “Many of our guests here come back again, and we become friends. They even come up to our house and play games with us. Most vacation rentals don’t do that, but if they want to hang out with us, we’re here to do so — we love it.” With the first rentals built in 2007, the property continues to evolve. Now there are several structures and cabooses for lodging purposes, all filled with an array of modern-day amenities. There are numerous opportunities aimed at getting folks away from technology and back to face-to-face conversations and outdoor adventure. “Come and let the kids run outside and be kids, not be tied to electronics,” Hillis said. “But, we’re also a short drive to all the great places and things to do in our area.” Recently, the family acquired a military

PROFILE
From the ground up Holbrook reflects on a lifetime of agriculture
Bill Holbrook.
ill Holbrook has been a lot of things in his 71 years on earth — a factory worker, a manager, a father, a husband — but he’s always been a farmer. “I enjoy getting my hands dirty. I enjoy the challenge,” said Holbrook, who owns Cold Mountain Farms. “I like it better than working on concrete in a factory.” Raised in rural Buncombe County, Holbrook grew up farming tobacco and hay, seeing years of plenty and years of want. And while he got himself a regular job upon graduation from Enka High School — he worked two years for rayon producer American Enka and then took a position with Dayco Corporation in Waynesville in 1968 — he always knew he wanted to get back to farming. “When I bought this land, I remember when I met the man that owned it and walked down into that bottom,” said Holbrook. “I reached and got that soil and I knew I wanted this land.” He bought that rich bottomland, going in as a partner with full-time vegetable farmer Hugh Kirkendall. At the time, Holbrook was in the midst of what would become a 25-year career with Dayco, so farming had to be a part-time endeavor.
B
28
That first land purchase amounted to just 11 acres, a small portion of the 175 acres he now owns. Over time, Holbrook bought up more and more land, and in 1993 he made a big decision — to leave his steady, well-paying management position at Dayco and start farming full-time. “Was it scary to quit my job and start farming full-time?” asked Holbrook, repeating the question posed to him in a recent interview. “Not really. I never even thought of it.”
STORIED LAND To Holbrook, agriculture is an instinct, a key ingredient to a happy and well-lived life, and over the course of his career he’s fought for the survival of Cold Mountain Farms and for the agriculture community of Western North Carolina as a whole. This May that legacy earned him the highest honor that community has to bestow — induction to the Western North Carolina Agricultural Hall of Fame. But it’s far from being the only honor he’s received for his contributions. He holds numerous awards from the Haywood County Farm Bureau and Haywood County Soil and Water District, designation as a River
Friendly Farm by the Tri-County River Friendly Farmer Program and has served on a variety of state and local boards, including the Haywood County Planning Board, the N.C. Cooperative Extension Advisory Board and the N.C. Tomato Growers Association. “I’m a blessed man to be able to be a farmer. I look at it that way,” said Holbrook. “I believe in three things — God first, family second, land third.” Holbrook loves the feeling of accomplishment that comes with shepherding a crop from seed to sprout to ripened vegetable, of looking back over the challenges of the season past — drought and flooding, pests and disease, frost and heat — and knowing that, despite it all, he’s succeeded. “Every year I had satisfaction in the challenges I went through,” he said. “The hardships, whatever it was. I always survived and made it.” Then, the vegetables harvested and the weather cooling, he had his winters free to hunt deer and grouse with his bird dogs before beginning to plan for the next season in December and January. The greenhouse would get going in February, with planting in May and then full-force ahead until September wound down once again.

I always survived and made it.” — Bill Holbrook That discovery meant that Cold Mountain Farm had been in the family since 1830 — his was only the second family to own it since the government originally dispersed the acreage through land grants, with Holbrook’s greatgreat-great-great-grandfather purchasing about half of the original 640-acre land grant. Before the land made it to the state’s hands for dispersal, it was part of the enormous territory of the Cherokee people. As colonial settlements expanded and the United States was formed, Native Americans were continually pushed out of more and more of their land through a series of increasingly unfavorable laws treaties. One of those laws was North Carolina’s Act of 1783, which left land west of the Pigeon River under Cherokee control. However, the state gave land grants there anyway, resulting in protests from the Cherokee and, decades later, the case’s arrival in the U.S. Supreme Court. The nation’s highest court ruled that Native Americans had the right to occupy the land but not to own it, and the settlers remained. “If the Supreme Court had ruled in favor of the Indians I wouldn’t be here today,” Holbrook mused. As a kid, Holbrook said, he wasn’t too interested in lessons in history and genealogy. But once he became a landowner, the past took on a new life.

“There’s a great sense of accomplishment when you completed a crop,” he said. “The bank account might not have been too much, but I never did lose money.” It’s an existence of self-sufficiency and interdependence, of respect for the land and the generations that have come before. Every acre has its stories, and over the years Holbrook has made it his business to learn those stories. That business became serious about 15 years ago when he began researching his farm’s deed history to apply to the state’s Century Farm program, which recognizes farms that have remained in continuous operation by the same family for 100 years or more. Holbrook knew that some of the acreage went back four generations, but what he didn’t know was that the Moore family, from whom he’d bought that original acreage back in 1982, would eventually appear in his family tree. “I knew my great-grandfather owned part of it, but he bought part of it and his wife inherited part of it,” Holbrook explained. “His wife was a descendent of the Moores.”

Holbrook remembers his childhood in Buncombe County with fondness, recalling entire days spent walking the creek and catching fish and climbing trees. Things have changed in the decades since. The family farm adjoins the Asheville city limits, with people and traffic flowing all around. “It was just a good place where kids could get out and play in the creeks and stuff, and the parents not worry about them,” said Holbrook. “It’s not that way now.” It’s different in Bethel. While Holbrook does have to be more concerned than he used to about safeguarding his riverbank from folks leaving nails in trees and empty beer cans on the ground, the area is still largely rural, and that’s by design. Holbrook was one of the founding members of the Bethel Rural Community Organization and helped establish the group’s Rural Preservation Committee, which formed in response to an effort from the county to extend water and sewer utilities into Bethel. The BRCO fought off that attempt — twice. “It wasn’t that we were against sewer and water. We were against what came with it,” Holbrook said. Where there are water and sewer lines, there will be development, and where there’s development, agriculture won’t last long. In the face of pressure from developers and rising land values, Holbrook said, the farmer will eventually sell out. And Haywood County simply can’t stand to lose its agricultural heritage. “Agriculture is the largest industry in North Carolina. It’s very important, its fixing to go over $100 billion,” said Holbrook. “It’s very important to stay and keep agricultural land
growing. Most people don’t know where food comes from — if you ask them, it comes from Ingles. They really don’t know.” But development is far from being the only threat to farming. Holbrook’s seen a lot of change over his decades in the industry. “Years ago, (a farmer) could make a living with his back,” said Holbrook. “Now he has to have his head. You can’t do it all yourself. You can’t get enough volume production, so you have to hire labor. You’ve got to manage that.” In addition to being physically strong and savvy about the ebbs and flows of the seasons, a farmer is an employer, a manager and a record keeper. He’s got to stay up on the latest in science and technology, making countless decisions about how to apply that knowledge to his craft. “A farmer, he owns the land and depends on the land and he don’t like people telling him what to do, but I relied on individuals with the N.C State University,” said Holbrook. “I relied on the extension service, trials at the test farm.” At the same time, he bristled at some less helpful government-farmer interactions. “Three things I didn’t like — regulation, regulation, regulation,” Holbrook said. That’s not to say Holbrook didn’t comply. He did, and in fact was the first farmer in Haywood County to be certified in the Good Agricultural Practices program, instituted through the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011. To non-farmers, the requirements of the act probably sound like good things — it ensures that all agricultural products are traceable, with records showing which crop was in which field, what pesticides were used to treat them, how they were irrigated and a host of other data points. In case of contamination, those records are quite valuable.

Experience Haywood 2018

But for a small farmer whose main goal is to plant his fields and coax them to yield a crop, meeting those requirements can be a tall order. “It’s a hindrance to the farmer, it is,” said Holbrook. “It’s an expense to the farmer, and we’re always trying to cut the costs and don’t want to add cost.” He testified to that effect before a U.S. House of Representatives committee in 2009, speaking up for affordable crop insurance and food safety requirements appropriate for small family farms. In Holbrook’s opinion, the push for traceability comes from big grocery stores wanting small farmers to take the fall if a batch of spinach is found to be contaminated with salmonella or E. coli. It’s a scary thing, he said — his land is his retirement, and the prospect of losing it all because of one contaminated crop is terrifying. That’s a big reason why he decided to retire from farming five years ago, two years after the Food Safety Modernization Act passed. “It wasn’t a difficult decision to make when I was 66,” he said. “I wasn’t going to take that chance of losing what I’d accumulated over a lifetime. You don’t get enough insurance to cover all that. That was probably the key decision. Yeah, labor is hard to get, those kinds of things, but that wasn’t a big thing. It was regulation, the chance of losing what I had accumulated.” Holbrook isn’t the only longtime farmer leaving the business. Increasingly, farming is an older man’s game. According to statistics published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average age of farmers in North Carolina is 58.9, and 87 percent of them are men. Holbrook blames much of it on the difficulty of securing high-quality farmland. “Prime farmland is in high demand because there’s just not much of it in our community as far as vegetables go,” he said. “So a young farmer, he starts out small as I did and then you’ve got to have a bigger truck to make money. You have to have more land to have more volume. The profit gets less and less per acre, so you have to have more acreage.” To make a go of it, you have to jump in with both feet. Such an approach makes a swift exit difficult, but it guarantees firmer footing than would a more tentative dip in the pool. “If I rented land and I invested into equipment and into my farm and all of a sudden I lost that land, I’ve lost the farming,” said Holbrook. “So I learned to try to purchase land, to be self-sufficient and not dependent on somebody else.” Though he’s not farming anymore, Holbrook still has his retirement — 175 acres of land sprinkled throughout Haywood County and a home that’s surrounded by cornfields and within view of Cold Mountain. He walks down to the Pigeon River each day for a swim and to hear the birds sing and the leaves rustle, and he’s grateful for where he is. “Bethel to me, with Cold Mountain and the river, is the key to this community,” he said. “I get up every morning and I look at Cold Mountain.”

Synchronous fireflies display part of untamed beauty in the Smokies
A long-exposure photograph reveals the patterns of light synchronous fireflies spin in the darkness. GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK/RADIM SCHREIBER PHOTO
entered the lottery on a whim, figuring that, like 90 percent of my fellow entrants, I’d end up with nothing but a polite “thank you for entering” and an invitation to try again next year. I was stunned, frankly, to receive an email that instead began with the word “congratulations” and an invitation to start dreaming about a front-row seat to one of the region’s most spectacular natural phenomena. That would be the flashing of the synchronous fireflies, Photinus carolinus. Fireflies are a familiar sight to anyone who’s grown up in the Southeast, yellow lights blinking across grassy fields during the most beautiful hours of any summer day — dusk, as the sun sets and saturated greenery fades slowly to darkness. But the synchronous fireflies are something different, akin to the hard-partying, sequinwearing cousin of a demure wallflower type. They stay abed until the sun is gone, waiting for complete darkness to start the party. The lady fireflies sit on the forest floor, emitting a weak little flash that apparently drives the gentlemen crazy. Perched in trees and shrubbery, the male fireflies flash in response —

bright, white flashes sparkle in synchronous waves through the forest. The pattern is consistent, with the males flashing five to eight times in a row before pausing, allowing darkness to take over for a few brief seconds. In that pause, they search for the faint flash of a potential sweetheart, hoping to find a mate before the night is over. Like many of the more showy elements of animal behavior, it’s all about reproduction, but standing in the midst of a forest full of blinking fireflies decorating the trees like Christmas lights, it’s easy to fool yourself into thinking there’s a less carnal purpose to the display — a motivation closer to artistry, magic and the pure desire for beauty in the world. At least, that’s how I’d remembered it when I put my name into the lottery this spring. I’d had the pleasure of seeing the fireflies at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park once before, back in 2014. I remember so clearly standing there as darkness fell, seeing nothing of note, and wondering what all the fuss was about. Then it happened — the unmistakable cacophony of synchronous light. I knew why I’d come.
Synchronous fireflies can be found across the Southern Appalachians, but they have a specific set of habitat requirements that limit their population to pockets here and there. Living at elevations of 2,000 to 5,000 feet, they’re sensitive to light pollution and trampling of the ground, and they need moist soils, a comfortable temperature range and an open understory to see each other’s displays. The Elkmont area has all of that, and it’s well known to contain one of the most dramatic firefly light shows around. So dramatic, in fact, that the park had to start running the firefly viewing as a ticketed event, limiting the number of people on any given night and staffing the trail with rangers to ensure that visitors behave in a firefly-friendly manner. This year, I was to be one of the lucky few granted a parking pass, allowing one carful to park at Sugarlands Visitor Center and ride the trolley up to the Little River Trail at Elkmont. We arrived on the early end of things, but not early enough to avoid waiting in a line several trolley-loads deep, populated with a combination of avid outdoors-lovers and folks venturing into the park for the first time. Despite the difficulty we humans always have with waiting, an-

ticipation reigned stronger than anxiety as the line slowly inched forward, finally disappearing as we made our way into one of the City of Gatlinburg trolleys and 6 miles uphill to Elkmont, where the magic was to happen. As dusk fell and the familiar yellow-flashing fireflies made their appearance, we found a nice spot along the trail, set up our chairs and the camera tripod — synchronous fireflies are one of the hardest subjects to photograph, which of course just fueled my enthusiasm for trying — and enjoyed the fact that the called-for rain had decided to hold off. The Smokies holds 19 known species of fireflies, and several members of that cast provided opening acts as the daylight waned into darkness. With nothing but moon and stars left to light the sky, I saw them — crackles of light, like so many sparks from a sparkler. They celebrated in bursts through the understory, a soundless crackle-crackle-pop punctuated by the lazy drifting of blue ghost fireflies. It was mesmerizing, and peaceful, though I kept waiting for the show to reach the dramatic heights it had in 2014, when the fireflies had flashed like bulbs strung along the branches of towering trees. When I looked at the time and saw it was nearly 11 p.m., I was shocked — because the hours had slipped away so quickly in that chair, along the summery green trail with the flashing of the synchronous fireflies and low blue pulses of the blue ghosts. But also because I wondered if my memory had failed me, if I’d somehow built up that 2014 experience to larger-than-life heights, fueled by the repetition of fawning reports emerging from all corners of the internet. But that’s not what happened, as I learned later. As with people, the seasons hit fireflies differently from year to year, and sometimes mitigating circumstances force a last-minute change of plans. This year featured some weird weather, making it harder than usual to predict exactly when the peak display would fall. April 2018 was one of the coldest Aprils on record, and May was forecast to be cool as well — though, in actuality, it turned out to be quite hot, speeding up firefly development and causing the trolley dates to fall in the middle and later part of the display period instead of smack in the middle, as is the goal. My ticket, dated for the secondto-last day of the event, would have been on the trailing end, while in 2014 I hit the peak exactly. But that’s not a disappointment, necessarily. Sometimes quiet and peaceful beauty is just as fulfilling as high drama, and honestly there’s comfort in the knowledge that, as much as we might sometimes like to be, we aren’t yet capable of pinning nature down completely. We can try, of course. We can take our measurements, make our guesses, design our systems, build our cages. But at the end of the day, wilderness will still fight to be wild, and the fireflies will still flash when they will. And if we’re lucky enough to catch the show — well then, good for us. The only sensible thing to do is sit back, enjoy, and take in the beauty. — Holly Kays

The Great Outdoors GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK PHOTO
Haywood County offers a unique quality of life. Its mix of small-town attributes, cultural amenities and outdoor recreation make it a truly special place to call home or to visit. And it is surrounded by many special places that attract travelers from across the country. Here are few of the highlights that are either in Haywood or nearby: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Cataloochee Valley History and nature intersect in this picturesque meadow, a long, narrow valley cradled by mountains on all sides that was once a thriving pioneer community that was part of Haywood County. An elk herd has been re-introduced into the park and calls the valley home. Elk were once common here but were overhunted in the early 1800s to extinction in the eastern states. Elk can be seen on most days, and the best time for viewing is in the early mornings or the early evenings. Cataloochee Valley is also home to intact farm houses, churches, schoolhouse and cemeteries that can be toured by car and short walks. There are several hiking trails that start in the valley, and it is also a favored location for trout anglers. From Maggie Valley, take U.S. 276 north toward I-40, but just before the interstate, turn left on Cove Creek Road, which leads up and over the Cataloochee Divide and winds down into the valley. Beware the narrow, gravel road.

Oconaluftee Visitor Center Along with knowledgeable rangers who can help you plan your time in the park, fabulous exhibits will take you back in time among the early settlers and Cherokee who called these mountains home. The visitor center chronicles the culture and history of the Smokies and is also a great starting point for anyone visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Located on U.S. 441 at the North Carolina entrance to the park, just outside of Cherokee and a few hundred yards from the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway. 828.497.1904.
The Blue Ridge Parkway The Blue Ridge Parkway is perhaps America’s most scenic byway, a ribbon of sweeping curves and stunning vistas stretching 469 miles from Cherokee to Virginia that stretches from one end of Haywood County to another. It’s hard to get lost on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It only goes in two directions — north or south. Short, wooden posts along the edge of the road mark off each mile, making it easy to
know exactly where you are. The milemarker number is listed for the recommended stops on the Parkway and should be easy to find by watching the mileposts.
Shining Rock Wilderness One of the original components of the Wilderness System created in September 1964, it is the largest designated wilderness area in North Carolina and is located entirely in Haywood County.
Purchase Knob The Appalachian Highland Science Learning Center at Purchase Knob is on 535 acres in Haywood County that is contiguous with the rest of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The site includes a historic cabin, two buildings which contain offices, laboratory space, a 50-person classroom, and housing for up to eight visiting scientists. The center averages about 5,000 visiting scientists, students and teachers each year. Everyday, the staff and program participants thank the family for their generous gift. Beautiful spot for hiking with great views.
Waterfalls Waterfalls have long had an almost spiritual appeal among humans, and there are plenty in and around Haywood County. Whether one is an avid outdoorsman or an occasional hiker, there is something special about making a gorgeous waterfall the destination for a hike. There are hundreds of waterfalls in Western North Carolina, and there is a fairly extensive list and an interactive map on The Smoky Mountain News website at www.smokymountainnews.com (navigate to the Outdoors section to find it). The following waterfalls are just a few of the more popular near Haywood:
Midnight Hole There’s not much of a waterfall at Midnight Hole, but if you’re looking for a good place to jump in the water, this is it. Midnight Hole is very popular and crowded at times. Swimmers can jump off the rocks into the pool. The water is cold and crystal clear and feels wonderful after the hike on a hot, muggy afternoon. Take I-40 Exit 451 in Tennessee. It will be the first exit after you cross the state line. Stay left after crossing the Pigeon River and follow the road 2 miles. You’ll drive by a power plant and community park. You’ll come to a stop sign at an intersection. Go straight through the intersection and enter the Big Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Follow the gravel road 0.8 miles to a picnic area and campground entrance. From the parking area, walk back up the road. You’ll see a sign on the left for the trailhead. The hike to Midnight Hole is about 1.5 miles. Stay on the main path and the hole is on the left. The hike is easy. Horses and their riders also frequent the trail.
Soco Falls Soco Falls is the closest large fall to Maggie Valley. Two creeks flow over steep rock cascades at a right angle from each other. There’s a wooden platform that faces the higher of the two falls. The other falls is nearly impossible to see face on without going down to the base of the falls. There’s a really steep dirt incline that goes down there without a lot to hold on to. I’ve never gotten the guts to slide down – especially with my camera. From Maggie Valley, drive north on U.S. 19. You’ll pass under the Blue Ridge Parkway. After passing the Blue Ridge Parkway, drive 1.4 miles to a pull off on the left. A short, steep path goes down between the guardrails. Follow the trail, which leads to a wooden platform.
Waterfall on West Fork Pigeon River The waterfall on West Fork Pigeon River runs under an old stone bridge on N.C. 215. Although this waterfall isn’t one to plan a trip around, if you’re driving on N.C. 215, it’s worth a stop. You can take shots from the road and the bridge but watch out for traffic. The waterfall is under a bridge on N.C. 215, 4.2 miles from where N.C. 215 crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s 13.6 miles south of where N.C. 215 intersects with U.S. 276.
Fishing The waterways in the Smoky Mountains attract trout fishermen from around the world, and it’s no wonder. Whether you’re in search of native brook trout or trophy-sized browns, you can find just the right river to make it happen. Western North Carolina recently hosted the World Fly Fishing championships, and the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians recently opened in nearby Bryson City. In Haywood County, places like Cataloochee Valley or the Pisgah National Forest offer miles of backcountry streams. Easily accessible streams like Richland Creek and Jonathan Creek are also popular for those without the time or inclination to venture into the backcountry.
Whitewater Nantahala The Nantahala River is a world-class paddling adventure. No experience is necessary to climb on board a raft with an outfitter and take a guided trip down the pristine rapids of the Nanty. The Nantahala has been called everyman’s river. It is an 8-mile run of basically Class II rapids (19 of them) with Class III Nantahala Falls waiting at the end. There is a slalom course on the river at the Nantahala Outdoor Center as well as “the wave” for playboaters. It is a wonderful river for rafting and beginner kayakers. Several outfitters on the river allow raft rentals without guides, and they’ll also shuttle you to the put-in.
Pigeon The Pigeon River, which flows through Haywood County, boasts Class IV and Class III rapids along with easygoing sections for a varied whitewater experience with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as a backdrop. The Pigeon has scheduled releases from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, providing a shorter but exciting trip. A number of outfitters are located in Hartford, Tennessee.

LEISURE
Haywood on Two Wheels With nearly 50 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and plenty of scenic highways and rural routes, Haywood County is a paradise for cyclists. Check out some of our favorites routes below or go to www.visitncsmokies.com to download ride information.
Sunburst Climb A fun ride with little climbing as you pedal deep into the woods west of Canton. Be sure to stop for a few pictures at Lake Logan, an Episcopal Retreat Center where cabins can be rented. If camping is your pleasure, take note as you turn around at Sunburst Recreation Area. On your return, you will pass by numerous farms as you loop back via Lovejoy Road and all too soon find yourself back at Canton’s Rec Park. Ride begins at the Canton Recreation Park on Penland Street/N.C. 215 in Canton. Parking, sheltered picnic tables, and restrooms available. (29.4 miles, for advanced beginner and above)
Hyder Mountain Loop Head into the country on a well-shouldered road, passing by the Pigeon River. Once over Interstate 40 continue down the river valley until it is time to climb Hyder Mountain. Most of the climb is conquered in the first half-mile with views that will reward your effort. Soon enough you’re on the twisting descent to another crossing of the Pigeon River. Then it’s just a left turn and a right turn back to your bike carrier. Ride begins at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church on Old Clyde Road (N.C. 209) in Lake Junaluska, N.C. Park in the gravel area next to the Fire Department across from the church. (9.9 miles, for intermediate and above) Haywood County is gaining popularity as a place for runners, cyclists, and others who like to participate in endurance sports. Every August Haywood County hosts the Lake Logan Multisports Festival, a series of biathlons and triathlons of varying distances. Competitors from across the country have made this one of the region’s most popular racing events. The rural Bethel community hosts the Bethel Half Marathon every October, a relatively flat mountain half marathon that is among the most scenic races in the region. Haywood County also has an active road biking community and riders get together for weekly rides and social events. All level of bikers welcome to join. For information on specific rides and more visit bicyclehaywoodnc.org. • Lake Logan Multisport Festival — August 2019 • Bethel Half Marathon — October 2019
Coleman Mountain-Panther Creek Loop A wonderful bicycle ride loop in the northwestern end of the county. Begin at Sorrell’s Store, a “Bike Outpost,” in Jonathan Valley. Climb over Coleman Mountain before descending to the Pigeon River. As you follow the river into the Panther Creek community, your road follows the long gone footprints of the large felines once known as “painters.” The woods for the next 10-plus miles are lightly populated and offer long-range views, especially when the leaves are off the trees. Soon enough you will be back in Jonathan Valley to enjoy the wide valley view on the way back to Sorrell’s Store. Ride begins at Sorrell’s Marathon gas station and store, which welcomes riders, at 3796 Jonathan Creek Road (also U.S. 276).
Skiing and Winter Fun Traditionally one of the earliest ski resorts in the Southeast to open and one of the last to close, Cataloochee Ski Area in Maggie Valley has 18 slopes and trails, 740 feet of vertical drop at an elevation of 5,400 feet, and unmatched snowmaking capabilities. Full service rental shop has more than 4,000 sets of ski and snowboarding equipment plus a state-of-the-art boot drying system. cataloochee.com or 800.768.0285.
Winter Hiking and Crosscountry Skiing With more than 800 miles of trails in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and hundreds of miles more in the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests and the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, Haywood County is a hiker’s paradise. Many winter days have temperatures in the high 50s, and with all the leaves gone from the trees, every winter hike offers views that just don’t exist during the more popular summer and fall seasons. Whether it’s the popular Sams Knob hike in Shining Rock or a section of the Appalachian Trail in the GSMNP, getting outdoors in winter can be an exhilarating experience. Also, the Blue Ridge Parkway and many national forest trails are great for cross-country skiing after being blanketed by a winter snow.

Walking & Hiking Simply getting outside is one of the favorite pastimes for people in Western North Carolina, whether that’s a pleasant walk along a greenway or a strenuous hike up a mountain. Greenways and walking trails are easy to find in Haywood County and often take you along beautiful creeks and waterways. Here’s a quick list of the most popular walking areas.

Galleries/Art Walks Haywood County and particularly downtown Waynesville are home to dozens of galleries featuring a variety of fine art and crafts. The first Friday of every month from May through December is Art After Dark in downtown Waynesville, with galleries staying open late with working artists available to discuss and demonstrate their work. downtownwaynesville.com.
Quilt Trail Quilts represent a much-loved symbol of comfort, family, heritage, and community, and the Haywood County Quilt Trails (HCQT) project aims to engage the community by providing yet another reason to explore Haywood County and enjoy the surrounding beauty. Vibrant quilt patterns are painted on pre-built wooden squares ranging from two feet to eight feet in size. haywoodquilttrails.com.
n Boogerman Trail — This 3.8-mile loop hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park takes you past old growth hemlocks and Robert “Booger” Palmer’s home place (hence the name). There’s plenty of creek views and wildflowers. Nearly a mile in, you’ll see a sing for Boogerman Trail. To avoid a relentless and steep climb, continue further up Caldwell Fork Trail and take the upper loop of Boogerman Trail. The hike begins near the Cataloochee campground. Drive past the campground about 500 feet and park in the next to the footbridge. This is an unofficial parking area and fills up quickly on the weekends. You may have to park on the road. Easy. n Hemphill Bald — The Loop hike at Hemphill Bald is 13.7 miles in total, but just 4.7 miles in will get you to the Bald. The bald was named after a pioneer family. From the Blue Ridge Parkway intersection with U.S. 19 in Maggie Valley go South on the Parkway toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At milepost 458.2 turn right on Heintooga Ridge Road. Continue for approximately 6 miles to the trailhead at Polls Gap. Medium. n Mount Sterling Gap Trail — This low ridge trail begins at Mt. Sterling Gap on Cataloochee-Big Creek Road. It’s only 2.8 miles to the firetower, but is rated extremely strenuous because of a 2,000-foot climb in 2.3 miles along an old jeep trail to the ridge just below the firetower. This firetower is one of three remaining in the Park. There are several excellent lookouts from the trail prior to reaching the main ridge, but the view from the tower is unequalled in the Park. The view includes the Pigeon River Gorge (below), the Unaka Mountains, the main ridge of the Smokies, the Black Mountains (east), and the end of the Southern Appalachians. The peak is a crossroads with trails leading up from Cataloochee, Baxter Creek, and Pretty Hollow Gap Trail, which is 14 miles in and of itself. The Sterling Gap trailhead is located on N.C. 284 at Mt. Sterling Gap. Difficult.
